How much for a ropin' horse?

Jack could not afford a f***in' ropin' horse. How much would they have cost in  his day?

I'm reading Cormac McCarthy's book Cities of the Plain and they just had a horse auction in which a roping horse sold for about $1000.00.   I don't know which year the story is set in, though.
