CHEYENNE - Filmmakers are masters at the art of illusion.
In two major motion pictures released this year, they'll convince moviegoers that Canada is actually Wyoming.
Their decisions to base their operations outside the Cowboy State weren't artistic, they say, but financial.
The producers for both "An Unfinished Life," which opens this weekend, and "Brokeback Mountain" to be released in December, considered Wyoming as the backdrop for their film.
It only made sense, as that's where the stories for both films take place, and both are based on stories by Wyoming authors, Mark Spragg and Annie Proulx, respectively.
But Canada's film incentives saved those companies money and, as a result, Wyoming lost millions of dollars in new revenue.
"It's been a rough couple of summers," said Michell Howard, manager of the Wyoming Business Council's film, art and entertainment office.
