I'm with you on the glasses after 40, Chrissi. After a lifetime of devouring countless books, I basically stopped reading anything except for novels and newspapers on my Palm and computer, because I could adjust the font size. I did that for about two effin years. Then I got prescription glasses but didn't like them. Now I wear drugstore glasses - a lot. And I do eat with them on. I hear you, Leslie, about fuzzy food.
Also I need a lot more light to read than I used to. After an entire childhood reading in bed with the lights off, by the flicker of half a photon, I now need to be sure whatever I'm reading is tilted so the lamp shines right on it.
I actually had this thought this evening as I was putting deodorant after my shower (may be TMI for some) - when I was younger, I used to have to wash frequently, because with all the teen spirit, I smelled pretty quickly. On the other hand, I had perfect vision. Now I can actually wear the same shirt I did yesterday, with no stank, but I can't see worth a damn...
