Heath Ledger's family rightfully conducted a private funeral for the beloved actor. But when his face, voice, personality, and spirit came into our living rooms, Heath became, in some way, our friend, too.
This song was written with Heath's artstic history in mind. In his short career, Ledger's characters promoted tolerance and empathy; he may have done more for gay rights than any actor to date.
The song was also written for fans. It is an attempt to understand how we can love someone we've never known, how we feel loss from afar, and, in a disjointed world, how connected we can feel to those who challenge us to become better human beings.
SONG FOR HEATH LEDGER
REBECCA F. 2008
Where you been, baby?
Where you been, my boy?
Been waiting here for hours
But you are not home.
They tell me that it's the end of you.
They tell me that your life is through.
But how can you kill something that's so unearthly?
How can you die when you're still alive?
So where you been, baby?
Where you been, my boy?
Been lookin' all over for you
But all I hear is noise.
They tell me I'll never see you again.
They tell me that it's the end.
But how can you kill something that's so unearthly?
How can you die when you're everyone's friend?
How can we ever thank you for your mercy?
Strong enough to take a stand in the end.
How can you die when you're unearthly?
How can the wind not bring you back again?
How can we thank you for your mercy?
How can we, when you're everyone's friend?
