"So save your money for your next entry fee, cowboy."

Here's some GOOD news, for a change, about an important filming site, sent to me by CalgaryActor. I put this on the Alberta thread too, but I know there are only a few die hards who will see it over there!

King Eddy to make music again
Colette Derworiz, Calgary Herald
Published: Wednesday, May 21, 2008

CALGARY - The King Eddy, dormant for years, will return to life after the Calgary Municipal Land Corp. awarded the bid to revitalize the rundown building to the Cantos Music Foundation.

This month, the corporation overseeing redevelopment of the East Village received several proposals to fix up the King Edward Hotel, once home to a legendary blues bar.

Chris Ollenberger, president and chief executive of the corporation, said Cantos had the best bid.

It wasn't solely focused on blues," he said Wednesday, "but music was an important part of their package.

"It also had the broadest appeal to a wide range of Calgarians. . . . It will bring even more people to the Eddy and East Village."

Ollenberger noted the proposal includes a live music venue.

"When people will see what it is, Calgarians will be proud of what is happening with the Eddy," he said. "It will make them pleased they didn't actually demolish the building."

Officials with the Cantos Music Foundation, which is a non-profit organization, declined to provide details of the proposal.

"At this point, the only thing we want to talk about is that we are really excited about this incredible opportunity," said executive director Andrew Mosker. "We'll be able to reveal details of the vision at an appropriate time down the road."

The King Edward Hotel, built in 1905, was closed four years ago when mould was found in the building.

Here's a link to the page on FindingBrokeback if you want to refresh your memory and/or see some pictures of what the building actually looks like right now:

Thanks, Lauren.  Sounds like a good reason to go back to Alberta to me.  ;D

Just so folks know, the King Eddy was the site for the Clown Bar, where Jack tried to buy Jimbo a beer.  Click on the 6th picture down under "Tough Times" on Lauren's link.  8)

Speaking of reasons to go back to Alberta, over on the Alberta Bound thread Bob suggested a party next summer at the King Eddie. I hope they change the color scheme!

Maybe we should start a list of Reasons to Go Back. I bet there's a thousand of 'em!   ;)

(Thanks for moving a picture over here, Meryl.)

Count me in for the party!

As for returning to Alberta, that's wht Oregondoggie is doing right now, in the rain and mud. He braved bear warnings to go to Goat Creek and that's what he wrote a couple of days ago - the beauty of his writings never ceases to amaze me :

Little Darlins,

Mud and mist and predators be damned!  Went up to them designated campsites today
past the jump of in Canmore.  Stuck my sagging haunches into the old Ford Escort,
'cause I was crazy to be there, careful not to bring soup.
Two Big Macs and coffee had to do.

Rode up Rt. 40 through soggy hulks of mountains past streams flowing
like a thousand ewes and lambs.  Brokeback Country!
Rode past the Basque Bridge to the "I did once" trailhead parking lot
on the Upper Kananaskis Lake.  Trailer tracks in the mud everywhere.
A robin kept vigil on a branch towards the lake.  Its breast a tiny votive lamp
as I recalled the litany of hurt and tears and despair.

Worked my way back to Canmore on Rt. 742.  All mud.
Up past the "riding by the lake" scene and the "road with the curve to heaven".

Then I swear I saw Jack riding up on his hill with the sheep,
but clouds tangled again with the mountains until I got back to Goat Creek (FNIT)
hiking down past the little "Time to go, Cowboy" meadow.

Around the campsite, tiny firs are poking up.
The flowers Mouk placed in Heath's emory were gone.  Guess he snatched them up in the night,
took them to heaven.

Re-piled the cairn of stones and thought of all you folk, who were there with me.
I know you were, 'cause your huge paw prints were fresh in the soil.
Got me yipping pretty loud, if that's what you want to call it.

Thanks for posting Larry's email, Noelie.

'A road with the curve to heaven.'

Good stuff.

I have a powerful need to be back there.

I'm glad that he rebuilt the cairn. Yeah, we all left our paw out there, for sure.  :)
