What Is It (For August) Part 2 **** ANSWER POSTED!! ****
« on: August 13, 2008, 01:40:48 am »
This piece is approximately 9 inches long, made mostly of wood with some metal and glass parts. It was manufactured around 1890.

It has a built-in storage case located underneath....

David, where do you find these strange objects?  :o  I have no ideas what this thing is.  :-\  I guessed  it's a device for inspecting the quality of coal, but the truth is, I simply don't know.  ???

This is fun, David - thanks!

Isn't that what those things are called when they check to see if there's a baby chicken inside the egg? Don't they candle the eggs in a proofer? Or is it just called a candler? Or is it called something ELSE?

Now that you all know the "egg proofer" isn't the correct choice we'll move on.... ;) ;D

There's still 9 other choices and plenty of confusion up there for everyone! :D

And to think I grew up in Indiana! Sheesh! :-\ ::)

You're welcome Marie! :-*

You know what I thought when I first saw a picture of that thing? I thought it looked like one of those card shuffling machines! Remember those? But I forgot to make it one of the choices. :)

I chose a device for inspecting the quality of coal, Jess. I made that choice for a very cynical reason - 'cause it would be the very last thing someone from a BetterMost demographic would pick. But now I'm having second thoughts. It looks too clean to be a coal sorter. I still don't know what it is, though!  ::)

The numbers always intrigue me with these polls. 182 people have viewed this thread but only 8 people have submitted a vote!  :-\  I guess that means 174 people visited this thread but didn't vote!   ::)

Same thing's happened at my What Is It? thread. To quote an abbreviation I learnt here at BetterMost - WTF!   ???

Lots of those hits are guests and "guests". With normal guests I mean actual people who are lurking, but not logged in, therefore can't vote. And "guests" are so called web spiders/web-crawlers/web robots, "an automated software agent that gathers pages from the World Wide Web" (from wikipedia). For example, they look for keywords to categorize sites for search engines.

Also, in addition to guest/spider views, many of us have probably visited this thread multiple times.  I know I've checked in on this thread a bunch of times (I don't really know exactly how many), but only voted once.

Hurry up Daviid, I need to know whether I'm having roast lamb for dinner on Sunday.

But then again are we supposed to watch the sheep, not eat em....

How observant are you?

If you look closely at the phrase below, you will find clues to the winner of this contest. Remember, the devil is in the details.

Don't feel bad because there was only one lone winner this time. We'll have another What Is It soon, and you'll once again have a chance to be a star and win a lamb. So, allow for happiness to be your state of mind! :D

Can you figure it out?

Notice I made bold the words Lone, Star and State....

Lone Star State.

Lone Star State = Texas.

And who lives in Texas?

JESS!!!

Yup! Jess won the contest! The object is indeed a MICROSCOPE SLIDE VIEWER. It is in fact a Bausch and Lomb Optical Company microscope slide viewer.

So, Jess gets a lamb from Ennis and Jack!

(that isnt' cheating is it?)

Of course not Jess! It's not cheating. Several people working together to figure out what it is is called teamwork!! ;) :)

David, these games are really fun.  Are we going to have a 3rd round for August?
:)

Hi Amanda, yeah I'll be posting a new one in the next day or two. :D

I am the winner! I am the WINNER! NYAH NYAH NYAH!!!

Why do I have this vision of Jess standing on a dias....holding her little lamb.....as the flag rises and the national anthem plays........ ::) ::)
Being happy doesn't mean everything is perfect.

It means you've decided to see beyond the imperfection

Notice I made bold the words Lone, Star and State....

Lone Star State.

Lone Star State = Texas.

And who lives in Texas?

JESS!!!

Yup! Jess won the contest! The object is indeed a MICROSCOPE SLIDE VIEWER. It is in fact a Bausch and Lomb Optical Company microscope slide viewer.

So, Jess gets a lamb from Ennis and Jack!

OH poo !!!

I wish I had looked at this one before. It is the only one I knew.We had one at University when I was doing optometry, along with a whole bunch of Bausch and Lomb instruments from ancient to ultra tech. They still make the best spectacle and contact lenses, and the best large optical equipment.I have just kicked myself as I had no clue about the previous two.
I am off to have a big sulk and a small tantrum !!!!
I know , very childish.

Why does it look so obvious once I know the answer?     Great job, David and Congrats to Jess!
Off to look at the new one!
