--- End quote ---

Oh, I go with the classic interpretation.  Rikki is a young, closeted gay man, and the singer is an out one.

"We could go driving down Slow Hand Road.
Or we could stay inside and play games, I don't know.
And you could have a change of heart..."

We have a Steely Dan collection CD - Can't even think of what it's called, I just know it's Number 48 on the 200-disk player - that has pretty much all the great ones.  I can't decide which is my absolute favorite - Rikki or "My Old School."  I can so relate to this line: "When California tumbles into the sea, that'll be the day I go back to Annadale."  College, overall, was not a particularly fun time for me.  My main memory of it is of feeling constantly under the gun - like there was always something more I could be doing to keep my grades up - more reading, more studying, more programming.  GAH.  Hated it.  And when I wasn't feeling stressed up to my eyeballs, I was drunk up to them.  Or hungover and stressed up to my eyeballs.  GAH.  And I didn't even go to that challenging of a school!

Yeah, that's the way I've heard it, but I have also heard the that "send it in a letter to yourself" has to do with copyrighting a song...not quite sure how those two themes work together! LOL

I love "My Old School"--it's Bard, y'know, where Becker & Fagen met.

Okay, interpret Gaucho for me. That's one I still puzzle over.

Just since this thread feels pretty non-sequiturish already, I'll say how much I've always liked "Son of a Preacher Man," which is in the same category in my head as "Ode to Billy Joe."  And I'll say that Steely Dan helped me through college.

"Being good isnt always easy
No matter how hard I try...."

"When all my dime dancin' is through, I run to you...."

Steely Dan has helped me through a lot of phases of my life, including Brokeback Fever. They have been on the car CD constantly for the past few months.

Clarissa, I *love* "Son of a Preacher Man."  It's on my iPod, and it totally jazzes me up when I'm running or working out.  Just gets me into a groove, baby...

How well I remember
The look that was in his eyes
Stealin' kisses from me on the sly
Takin' time to make time
Telling me that he's all mine
Learning from each other's knowing
Looking to see how much weve grown...
