Very good point--that nuance had evaded me previously. And that would explain why Aguirre came down so hard on Jack for the loss of the sheep due to the lightning strike; there might have been no one else to (unfairly) blame.

Right--I meant to refer to the possible implications of how the scene plays out in the film alone; in the story, there would have been no undercurrent of competition, though we do learn that both boys had not expected company on the mountain.
