They all have a special power, just like in Interview With the Vampire. Edward can read minds. They also talk about Alice's special power later on.

He wanted to kill her in the beginning when he first met her. He distanced himself from Bella to protect her. Edward was afraid he might not have been able to control himself.

In the scene coming up you will see Edward playing the piano. Apparently he (Robert Pattinson) was really playing the piano in that scene. I read he is an extremely talented musician. And I love the song he plays. It is called Bella's Lullaby. You will start to hear the song when they go up to the top of the tree. It's a beautiful song.
