Depressing story about girls' schools in Afghanistan

<< < (2/2)

LauraGigs:
Here in Boulder there are a few bricks-and-mortar stores set up where proceeds partially support girls' schools in Afganistan.  Are there any appropriate online charities that do the same thing?  Or sites where we can petition the US government (or other Brokies can petition their respective governments) to keep from turning a blind eye to this terrorism?

Nevermore:

It's already been done, Katherine. It was called Aliens II ;).
Seriously, I saved some of the training materials given to female military personnel prior to the first Gulf War, in which were informed that we could not leave to base without being covered (and I don't mean State Farm Insurance) or accompanied by a man, couldn't drive, couldn't go to Baskin Robins out in town, et cetera/. "WTF" does not begin to describe it. I was ready to start World War III all by myself, and I was not the only one by any means.
And it would do no end of good for those Afghan women, to be escorted to school by big strapping American gals (we're huge in comparison, by the way--at 5'8" I'm taller than most Afghan men) driving APCs and bristling with firearms. It makes me feel like Ripley just thinking about it.
