Books of The (NY) Times: Larry McMurtry, Bookish Cowboy Heads Off to the Corral
Aloysius J. Gleek:
(I ALSO have to say, in re the 1976 Trillin piece, 33 years old--wow. It is itself an antique, in every sense of the word, from the Mr. Shawn-edited New Yorkerese prose, the (pre-computer) typed "unstained" letters, the money ("a hundred and twenty-five dollars")--all I have to say (after I had to TYPE the first paragraph myself as I could not copy and paste): yike!
However: it is a good article. Give it a try if you can!

The entire article—and the complete archives of The New Yorker, back to 1925—is available to subscribers. Non-subscribers can purchase the individual issue.

I didn't know that these riches were open unto me. Am I ever going to do anything else in my whole life other than read all these back issues? My God, just the otherwise unpublished short stories. The cartoons. The Pauline Kael reviews. I'm blown away. I'm reading the Calvin Trillin article now. Wow.
