"Shades of Grey"
Chapter 13
This beautifully written, descriptively brutal prose re-created for me, in my heart and in my mind, the unresolved grief and desolation I experienced when Jack was murdered in the movie. It all came flooding back to me. It was almost too much for me to bear and I had quite a jarring emotional reaction on first reading it.
Ennis followed them out into the parking lot, stumbling along behind, not close enough to touch, but close enough to drown in the anguish spilling off Jack in great, swamping waves, his eyes begging Ennis to go back, to let go…let go. Madrigal shoved Jack into the passenger seat of his car, the tinted windows swallowing Jack in a single gulp. Madrigal stepped lightly around the front of the car to fold himself behind the wheel. He didn’t even look at Ennis, the blond man shouting hoarsely in the parking lot of no more interest than a pebble under Madrigal’s foot or a leaf dancing in the wind.
“Jack!” Ennis screamed. “Jack!” But there was no one to hear; Jack was gone, disappearing as if he had never been.
