Jess, sweet grass can be found growing in many parts of the US; particularly in the plains area of the US where the Lakota lived. It is a type of grass, and it looks a little bit like wheat. It also grows in parts of Europe.

The story is so beautiful, the writing so vivid... I can imagine you listening to the soothing voice of your mother... Makes me all teary-eyed. I have to read it again to let it sink in completely...
