Hoosier TalkHere's a little list of words and phrases you're likely to hear while in the Hoosier state. It might come in handy the next time you travel through Indiana. But then again, maybe not.
POOSH - a gentle shove.
DEESH - something you eat your dinner on.
FEESH - a water animal with fins.
PERSCRIPTION - something that is mailed to you weekly or monthly, like a "magazine perscription"!
YA'LL - You All. But here in Indiana it rhymes with "wall" or "fall". It's ONE word, not two.
BILLFOLD - A wallet.
CAYN'T - Can't. But we say CAYN'T. (rhymes with FAINT)
FIXIN' - "getting ready to" or "preparing to". Example: David and Alex are FIXIN' to go to the store.
WERNTYA Weren't you. But Hoosiers often use it, even if it isn't grammatically correct. Example: You went to work today, werntya?
COKE - Any drink with carbonation in it. Sometimes called "pop" up in northern Indiana.
WARSH - Wash. Example: I "warshed" all the "deeshes" and now I'm "fixin" to clean up the kitchen.
SKILLET - a pan, like a frying pan.
There's more. If I think of any others, I'll post them!
