What is a Hoosier? I mean aside from a person from Indiana.

Over in Missouri they will tell you Hoosier means a dirty, lazy and mean hillbilly. haha. Missorians don't like folks from Indiana very much I guess. Nobody really knows how the word started. Most people agree it probably comes from the men working for Samuel Hoosier, the man who built many of the levees down in Southern Indiana along the Ohio River. They were called Hoosier's Men, or Hoosiers. And since most of them lived in Indiana the word stuck and nowdays everyone in Indiana is called a Hoosier.
Some people will tell you it comes from the pioneers. According to legend, when someone knocked on a cabin door, the Indiana settler would ask "who's here?" and later it corrupted down to Hoosier. And some people say it comes from the brawling and fighting many Indiana frontiersmen engaged in during the early years of the state. They were called "hushers" because they could "hush" their opponent with their fist.
Personally I think the word probably comes from Samuel Hoosier.
