You´re probably right about the money being spent on booze. When you earn that little, I think it feels rather pointless to start saving.

Judging from the aerial window shots of Jake pulling up in the truck, I'd bet they only rented the upstairs.

He even says to Alma, "...rent in town's too high" when she asks him to move from the Lonesome Dump. (LOL to Monika)

What about the horses then. Couldn´t he have rented those too? Or do we know that he owns them?
