Brokeback Mountain Movie Tropes...

<< < (2/3) > >>

x-man:
In "A slightly edited list of tropes...are as follows," TOoP/Bruce writes a list of questions as an introduction to this site.  One is "IKEA Erotica: The tent scene.  Anyone who tries anal sex like that is in for a world of hurt."

I wondered about this when I first saw the movie.  In the short story, we learn that Ennis "hauled Jack onto all fours, and with the help of the clear stick and a little spit, entered him..."  In the movie,  Ennis spits into his hand and rubs it on his cock.  So at least a nod by the movie to the question, but TOop is right.  A little spit is not enough; if you are going to use only spit as a lubricant, you need a lot.  What Ennis used in the movie was definitely not enough to do the job.  Well, they must have caught on to the problem soon enough.  Proulx's story suggests they continued to use spit even in the motel room:  "The room stank of semen and smoke and sweat and whiskey...shit and cheap soap."  If the guys had used an oil-based lubricant like Vaseline or Baby Oil instead of spit there would not have been the smell of shit in the room.

I want to  raise a couple of other points.  I don't know if they belong here, but I don't know where else to post them.

Where is "Streets of Laredo"?  The song is listed first in the credits.  I listen/watch for it every time I see BBM, but have never found it.  Is it on the cutting room floor?  I even wondered if that was what Jack was trying so unsuccessfully to play on his flat harmonica, but what he played was not remotely like SofL.  I know I am not the first to ask this question, so someone please help.  Find that tune.

Was anyone else troubled by the Aguirre on horse/Jack chopping wood scene?  In it, just before he stops to talk to Aguirre, Jack places a small log on the stump he is using as chopping block.  When Aguirre leaves, Jack turns to resume chopping, but the little log is not there.  I noticed this right away, and Ang Lee must have noticed it too.  What's going on?

TOoP/Bruce:
Hi x-men,

Nice to meet you!

I posted this quite a while ago, but it is always good to hear from people who come across my old threads!

I believe "The Streets of Loredo" is a tune we hear Ennis whistling while on horseback during one of the mountain scenes.

The discontinuity in the wood chopping scene is one of several identified continuity errors in the film.  Most films have at least a few, and I don't think there is much more to it than that!

Also, x-man, the wording is "clear slick and a little spit". The penis provides its own lubricant, which may have made up for the shortfall.

x-man:
FR, OK, I mi-wrote "stick" for "slick."  The penis provides its own lubricant?  That totally goes against my own experience and that of every man I have ever slept with.  A lubricant is a necessity for gay sex, not a luxury.  I have no idea what the situation is for straight sex.

I presume the reference is to that fluid popularly known as pre-cum, but I've never heard of anyone pre-cumming enough for that to be the only lubricant. As for spit, well, you know the old saying, "If it isn't spit, it isn't love."
