Hugh Hugh Hugh!
MaineWriter:
AUSSIEWOOD actor Hugh Jackman was so struck by historic mansion Strickland House after filming there he now wants to buy it.
The heritage-listed Vaucluse manor is doubling as Darwin's Government House in Baz Luhrmann's epic film Australia, giving Jackman and his co-star Nicole Kidman the chance to explore the property last month.
It appears the Victorian Regency-style residence made quite an impression, with site manager Paul Jones telling Confidential Jackman made enquiries about purchasing it.
But if The Boy From Oz is serious he is going to have a fight on his hands, with conservationists and historians adamant the palatial property be retained for public use.
The 150-year-old landmark, set on nearly 5ha overlooking Sydney Harbour, has been owned by the Government since 1914 and is considered priceless.
A State Property Authority spokeswoman said the actor had not made a formal approach and the Government was in no position to make any plans about the site's future until a master plan was completed later this year.
Jackman, currently shooting in the Queensland town of Bowen, usually bases himself in the nearby suburb Bronte when in town with his actress wife Deborra-Lee Furness and their children.
Real estate agent to the stars Michael Finger, of Ray White Double Bay Group, confirmed yesterday Jackman had been hunting for properties in Vaucluse around the $8million mark.
"He has been looking but intermittently,'' he said.

Hugh saved by Nicole Kidman, LOL
Scorpion saviour Nicole Kidman
Nicole Kidman saved Hugh Jackman from a poisonous scorpion on the set of their new movie.
The pair are currently filming Baz Luhrmann's new movie 'Australia' in their home country and in one scene Nicole joins Hugh in a sleeping bag under the stars.
However, as the actress was about to join Hugh in the bag, she noticed he already had a far more dangerous sleeping companion.
An on-set source told the National Enquirer magazine: "Nicole gasped when Hugh opened the cover invitingly to reveal a poisonous scorpion creeping up his leg.
"She calmly told him not to move and squatted down, scooped the arachnid into her hat and walked over to the woods and released it.
Everyone applauded but we did ask her why she hadn't just stomped on it. She said, 'I would never kill an animal. Every creature here has its purpose. This one just didn't belong in Hugh's bag!' "
