My guess would be, he knows the business, he knows the Hollywood community, how people in the business and community act and think. He wanted to prepare them for the loss, give them time to get over any disappointment in advance so they would be prepared to face it when it happened.
I so understand that sort of approach. I would have taken it, too. Better than false optimism, IMO.

Reading over the interview, it's surprising how the wound of Brokeback not winning Best Picture hasn't really healed for me! That moment with Jack Nicholson opening the envelope actually will remain in my heart along with 9-11 and the Kennedy assassination as one of the unforgettable moments of my life, preserved in terrible detail. :'(
