(Stymied at every point, Danny has, finally, come back to the castle--)
Frances: I take it you have something you wish to discuss?
More than that - you intend to accuse me?
(As the groundsman/bodyguard is taking Danny's envelope and frisking him--)
Danny: I have a question.
Frances: A question.
I'll permit a question.
But just one.
(They reach the library, Frances carrying Danny's envelope,
and the bodyguard is dismissed--)
Frances: That will be all.
(The mood has changed; they are now sitting on the floor, staring into the fire.
They have silently, separately realized that, with Alex finally gone,
they each have no one else other than the other.)
Frances: We both loved him.
Danny: Yes.
Frances: Can't we pretend, for a while, that's all we need to say?
(Danny moves closer to Frances and takes her hand--)
Frances: There was always something of the mystic about you.
Fortune teller, soothsayer,
a person who knows nothing,
yet sees everything.
Danny: Alex was the last person to hold your hand.
Frances: Question?
Danny: Statement.
Frances: Yes. Yes, he was.
Danny: You blame me for his death.
Frances: Question?
Danny: Statement.
Frances: Yes. Yes, I do.
Danny: How can you blame me--unless you know why he was killed?
Frances: It is a good question--
(--But still she does not tell him WHY.
Danny picks up and gives Frances the thick envelope
with Alex's discovery of 'no more lies'--)
(Without opening the envelope, already knowing its contents, she throws it into the fire-- )
Frances: For all your efforts,
all your loss,
all your grief and sacrifice--
you have nothing.
(Danny's face is filled with emotion--)
Frances: You accept I'm continuing this conversation solely for my own personal reasons?
Danny: Which are?
Frances: It's very important to me that you understand how much I loved my son.
Danny: Show me his room.
(Frances had been fingering a chain or cord at her neck--
keenly aware, Danny touches the cord
and slowly pulls out a key from her blouse.)
(In turn, Frances touches the cord at Danny's neck,
and, from the collar of his jumper,
she pulls out his talisman, the cryptex,
the combination lock cover of
Alex's now dead, erased thumbdrive.)
(Frances leads Danny to a room at the top of a stair
and unlocks a door with the key--)
Frances: Alistair spent more time in this room than any other.
(Danny is stunned--and overwhelmed.
Seeing the evidence of Alex's 'beautiful mind'--
Its beauty, his beauty,
and his sad, isolated, lonely life,
the monstrous unfairness of his death,
the violent erasure of his life,
Danny's anger, his fury erupts--)
Danny: How do you know--How??
(--Danny is suddenly, violently moved
to wipe away the chalk calculations with his hands--)
(Frances is frantic, desperate,
pleading as she attempts to drag him away,
but Danny wants answers--)
Frances: No! No, no, no! Stop... No! No, no, no, no!
(Frances sobs)
Please...
(Danny stops.)
Frances: Because he was my spy.
I made him a spy.
(....)
Frances: I told you, my husband was an important man.
An important man, with a second-rate mind.
We were together at Cambridge.
The tutor who recruited him was as blind to my talents--as he was to Charles's flaws.
Nonetheless, in the gentlemen's club of MI5, Charles flourished,
while I was relegated to--
hosting dinners and cocktail parties for his spies.
(A cut to an earlier time--a large, elite group in smug, self-pleased conversation--laughter--)
Frances: Three moles at the heart of his organization...
and Charles didn't see them.
Frances: They were men like him--
talked like him, dressed like him, fucked like him.
Well, two did, anyway. They were his friends.
Agents were lost, operations compromised.
When the three finally defected, we were disgraced,
removed from the service, exiled from power,
left to rot in this place,
guarded night and day by agents,
for fear that we too might be traitors.
I took to drink, for a while.
I became promiscuous, for a while.
Scandal engulfed me.
I couldn't go on behaving that way.
You either step into the abyss--
or step back from it.
You cannot walk along its edge for long.
Frances: You know this edge?
Don't you?
Danny: Yes.
Frances: Yes. Alex was your step back?
He was mine, too.
I decided to have a child.
He'd be my future, my saviour, my second chance.
I'd make him into the spy I should've been.
My spy, made by me...
It was a mistake.
Danny: Not a lie. Not the truth.
Frances: For once, your intuitions let you down.
Danny: You decided to have a child?
What, fuck old Charles and see what happens?
Not much of a plan, considering how stupid you think he is.
But luck was on your side.
Your child was a genius.
Frances: Be very careful what you say next.
Danny: I want to tell you a story--about a man.
While other people were laughing and drinking--this man would just walk--

In the recent BBC thriller London Spy (which is genuinely very good, by the way), there was a scene where a flash drive containing the plot device was shown to remotely wiped by a device hidden in a functioning pocket digital camera when it took a picture of Ben Whishaw's character. His mobile phone is also shown to be disabled.
The clincher is, the drive was hidden in a thick metal shell, which I believe form a Faraday cage. Is this possible in real life ?

It's a show. 8-) I can't think of any remote technology that would wipe a USB flash drive. It might be possible for an enormous magnetic pulse to demagnetize a standard USB drive with a mechanical drive but I doubt it since magnetic field is highly distance sensitive.

As seen above, the artist Wilberia does amazing, emotional images (some narratives) using London Spy's Danny (Ben Whishaw) and Alex (Ed Holcroft). Wilberia also has done images based on Ben Whishaw as a different character, Robert Frobisher, in Cloud Atlas, and his star-crossed lover, Rufus Sixsmith, portrayed by actor James D'Arcy.

The couple in Cloud Atlas is doubly tragic. In the story "Letters from Zedelghem", James D'Arcy/Rufus Sixsmith, a scientist, attempts to find, save, rescue Ben Whishaw/Robert Frobisher, a composer, before Frobisher commits suicide, but is too late. In a later 'chapter' of the Cloud Atlas story, "Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery", Sixsmith is an old man (D'Arcy in make-up), a well respected, even well beloved nuclear scientist who attempts to expose a dangerous nuclear facility in San Francisco. Before he is able to do so, he is murdered in his airport hotel room by Hugo Weaving, making it look like a suicide--the same way lover Whishaw/Frobisher actually did kill himself decades earlier.
Like Wilberia's art in London Spy, her images in Cloud Atlas MOSTLY show the star-crossed lovers happy and in love, and assume that they live happily ever after in an alternate reality--

Letters from Zedelghem
Zedelgem, Belgium, 1931. Robert Frobisher (Ben Whishaw), a penniless young English musician, finds work as an amanuensis to a composer, Vyvyan Ayrs (Jim Broadbent), living in Belgium, Letters from Zedelghem sees Robert Frobisher compose the Cloud Atlas Sextet, which consists of six nested solos arranged in the same manner as the narratives in Cloud Atlas. Mitchell has noted that the characters Robert Frobisher and Vyvyan Ayrs were inspired by Eric Fenby and Frederick Delius (Fenby was an amanuensis to the great English composer). The daughter of Ayrs appears in Mitchell's Black Swan Green as an elderly woman befriended by the main character.
This story is saved in the form of letters to Frobisher's friend (and implied lover) Rufus Sixsmith (James D'Arcy), which the next character discovers after meeting Sixsmith.
Half-Lives: The First Luisa Rey Mystery.
Buenas Yerbas, California, 1975. Luisa Rey, a journalist, investigates reports that a new nuclear power plant is unsafe, with the help of Sixsmith who as a respected nuclear physicist has become a whistleblower.
The next character is sent this story in the mail, in the form of a manuscript for a novel.
Structure and style

Apart from the central (6th) story (Sloosha's Crossin' an' Ev'rythin After ), which is uninterrupted, each story breaks abruptly off halfway through, to be followed by the first half of the next story. The interrupted story then appears within the next one, with the protagonist reading or watching the first half of its text; for example, in "An Orison of Sonmi~451," Sonmi~451 describes watching a film about the life of Timothy Cavendish, but she is only able to watch 50 minutes before her story is also interrupted. Each story ends with its protagonist finding the second half of this story, which is then printed after it.
Linking themes
Mitchell has said of the book:
Literally all of the main characters, except one, are reincarnations of the same soul in different bodies throughout the novel identified by a birthmark...that's just a symbol really of the universality of human nature. The title itself "Cloud Atlas," the cloud refers to the ever changing manifestations of the Atlas, which is the fixed human nature which is always thus and ever shall be. So the book's theme is predacity, the way individuals prey on individuals, groups on groups, nations on nations, tribes on tribes. So I just take this theme and in a sense reincarnate that theme in another context...
Film adaptation
The novel was adapted to film by directors Tom Tykwer and Lana Wachowski and Andy (now Lilly) Wachowski. With an ensemble cast to cover the film's multiple storylines, production began in September 2011 at Studio Babelsberg in Germany. The film is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 26, 2012.

If you've watched Cloud Atlas and you're still a bit confused, it’s easy to see why. Each of the six intertwined stories takes place in a different era and assumes the tropes of completely different genres. Actors play multiple roles across the film, switching ages, races, and even genders from tale to tale. Tracking those actors is somewhat key to understanding the connective plot, in which various souls are reincarnated or migrate over time — crossing the ages like clouds cross the skies. (In the book, you could track the reincarnation by the bodies that shared a comet-shaped birthmark; in the film, the birthmark just signals our protagonists, and the actor triggers the reincarnation.) See Hugo Weaving? Then you've got the bad soul who will only get worse over time. See Tom Hanks? Then you've got the recovering soul who starts off bad but will become (mostly) good over the course of his journey. Here is a guide to the karmic chameleons of Cloud Atlas. (Note: to avoid confusion we will mostly refer to the characters by the names of the actors who play them.)

a record-store clerk in 1973 who can't get the Cloud Atlas Sextet out of his head and helps Halle Berry find it;
the wife of Hugh Grant in 2012 and sister-in-law to Jim Broadbent;
a tribesman in 2321.
His soul journey: He doesn't seem to learn much over time, remains morally ambiguous, and will sleep with anyone, no matter whom it hurts.

His soul journey: A little muddled. He goes from being a passive listener to someone who takes a stand against a big wrong back to a passive listener of a tale of injustice.

Hugo Weaving’s assassin shoots him in the mouth, which mirrors the suicide-by-gun death of his lover, Frobisher.

An arrogant ship's captain in 1849;
a composer in 1936 who takes on apprentice Ben Whishaw and attempts to claim the younger man's work as his own;
the morally ambiguous (and birthmarked!) vanity press publisher Timothy Cavendish, who benefits from the death of a critic at the hands of his author, Tom Hanks;
a Korean street musician in 2144 and
an advanced being known as a Prescient in 2321.
His soul journey: He starts off by being pompous and self-serving but learns humility over time.
Onscreen connections to other characters/story lines: His grand mansion in 1936 is his nursing home in 2012; the film of his "ghastly ordeal" in 2012 is watched by a clone slave in 2144;
his 1936 character has a dream of the Papa Song café in which Sonmi-451 works.

Chibi (ちび or チビ?) is a Japanese slang word meaning "short person" or "small child". The word has gained currency among fans of manga and anime. It means someone or some animal that is small in stature. It can be translated as "little", but is not used the same way as chiisana [小さな] (tiny, small, little in Japanese) but rather cute. A prototypical example of the former usage in the original Japanese which brought the term to the attention of Western fans is Chibiusa, a pet name for the diminutive daughter of Sailor Moon formed from Chibi Usagi ("Little Rabbit").[1]
In English-speaking anime and manga fandom (otaku), the term chibi has mostly been conflated with the "super deformed" style of drawing characters with oversized heads or it can be used to describe child versions of characters.
Chibi style is usually used in depicting scenes which are cute and/or humorous, and it is extremely rare for it to be used for an entire anime series. It is often used at OVAs and ONAs. It is quite popular in manga, however, such as the Chibi Maruko-chan series.
