That's next!
#4 Hank Williams' "Kaw-Liga"
After the Chilean sheep debacle, Jack again on his harmonica is playing this. Ennis' line "You'll run the sheep off again if you don't quiet down". Heart made of knotty pine, can't let it show.
~~~
Kaw-liga was a wooden Indian standing by the door.
He fell in love with an Indian maiden over in the antique store.
Kaw-liga just stood there and never let it show,
So she could never answer "yes" or "no."
Poor ol' Kaw-liga, he never got a kiss.
Poor ol' Kaw-liga, he don't know what he missed.
Is it any wonder that his face is red?
Kaw-liga, that poor ol' wooden head.
He always wore his Sunday feathers and held a tomahawk.
The maiden wore her beads and braids and hoped some day he'd talk.
Kaw-liga, too stubborn to ever show a sign,
Because his heart was made of knotty pine.
Kaw-liga was a lonely Indian, never went nowhere.
His heart was set on the Indian maid with the coal black hair.
Kaw-liga just stood there and never let it show,
So she could never answer "yes" or "no."
And then one day a wealthy customer bought the Indian maid,
And took her, oh, so far away, but ol' Kaw-liga stayed.
Kaw-liga just stands there as lonely as can be,
And wishes he was still an old pine tree.
#5 Roger Miller's "Dang Me"
Shortly after Ennis and Alma's wedding, Ennis "spinning donuts" with the truck. This is on the radio.
~~~
Well, here I sit high, gettin' ideas
Ain't nothing but a fool would live like this
Out all night and runnin' wild
Woman sittin' home with a month-old child
Dang me, dang me
They oughta take a rope and hang me
High from the highest tree
Woman, would you weep for me?
Just sittin' around drinkin' with the rest of the guys
Six rounds bought, and I bought five
And I spent the groceries and half the rent
Like fourteen dollars and twenty-seven cents
Dang me, dang me
They oughta take a rope and hang me
High from the highest tree
Woman, would you weep for me?
Roses are red and violets are purple
Sugar is sweet and so is maple surple
Well I'm the seventh out of seven sons
My pappy's a pistol, I'm a son-of-a-gun
Well, dang me, dang me
They oughta take a rope and hang me
High from the highest tree
Woman, would you weep for me?

Not a song, but...
"Hud" is playing at the drive-in when Ennis and Alma are eating popcorn.

"Hud, the man with the barbed-wire soul". "Mean and magnificent. Alone and arrogant."
Inspired by Larry's "Horseman Pass By".
Patricia Neal won the Oscar for portraying Alma.

#6 "Faded Love" by Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys
When Jack returns to Signal looking for work, and for Ennis. This is blaring on his radio.
~~~
As I look at the letters that you wrote to me
It's you that I am thinkin' of
As I read the lines that, to me, were so dear
I remember our faded love
I miss you darlin', more and more every day
As heaven would miss the stars the above
With every heartbeat, I still think of you
And remember our faded love
As I think of the past and all the pleasures we had
As I watched the mating of the dove
It was in the springtime that you said goodbye
I remember our faded love
I miss you darlin', more and more every day
As heaven would miss the stars above
With every heartbeat, I still think of you
And remember our faded love
And remember our faded love
I'll skip the fireworks scene, with "Battle Hymn of the Republic". No change there.
#7 Kitty Wells' "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels"
This is on the jukebox when Lureen lures Jack to the dance floor after her "matin' call" line.
~~~
As I sit here tonight, the jukebox playin'
The tune about the wild side of life
As I listen to the words you are sayin'
It brings memories when I was a trusting wife
It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men
Think they're still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong
It's a shame that all the blame is on us women
It's not true that only you men feel the same
From the start
Most every heart that's ever broken
Was because there always was a man to blame
It wasn't God who made honky tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men
Think they're still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong
