Right. Ellery hasn't had a good track record of holding onto his man, that's for sure!
frantic65:
And then we have the irony of Colson's being able to so totally & publicly commit to Ellery in the face of all these things when he refused to commit to Adam for 20 years just because people "might" find out about them. We know how Adam's death has changed Colson's outlook on things but again Ellery isn't privy to Colson's thought processes like we are. I really love how you've underlined his transformation & how it's taken several years of his being alone in his daughter's house, yet once he gets Adam's journal & decides to take that first step & finds Ellery, he holds on to that second chance quickly even while struggling to forgive himself for not giving that committment to Adam. Just beautifully done.
louisev:
why thank you Fran!!!
The entire theme of the story rests upon how death and loss can be turned to redemption and self transformation, and this is also true of Ellery's losses, not just Colson's.

You're very, very welcome Louise!!
I find the story (& it's theme) to be extremely uplifting (I wish I had found it a little earlier after I first saw a certain movie! ;))
BTW, just to clarify a timeline for me. Where The Chesterfield Fortune leaves off would be the most recent events in the saga, right?
louisev:
Yes that is correct. "Chesterfield Fortune" occurs in January 1985. Events in "Dem Bones" occur the first week of November 1984 while Colson is confined to bed for 12 days with his "legbone", an aural fistula, or damage to the soft tissues of his inner ear, which was caused by being decked and knocked out by Bill Early in the first book, "Taking Chances."
