MICKEY
- written by Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman
- #1 hit for Toni Basil in 1982 (released August 1982)
- lyrics as recorded by Toni Basil with cheering provided
by the 1981 Dorsey High School cheerleaders

Are they appropriate for our Nick and Jeremy or what???

Very fitting indeed!

Jo .. great points as always!  :)

In his past sexual relationship, Nick was the prey and how he wants to shift from that position to become the hunter.  But it is not so simple to change gears because he has feelings for Jeremy that he has not experienced before.  They are new to him and he is feeling confused and insecure.  In the last chapter he wonders if he is even worthy of Dupree.  Seeing as Dupree himself has never been in love before, he does not know whether his budding feelings are love or lust (seeing as they have been having a very intense, physical relationship).

I love what Louise is doing with her characters, they are not one-dimensional and certainly not black and white!

I was singing along in the car on my way to work when I realized the lyrics were all about Nick and Jeremy!

Then of course it hit me that it should be Hey Nickey, not hey Mickey!

*whew!*  I'm glad you folks didn't get out the pitchforks before I got a chance to give a glimpse into what I was doing with Licky Nicky!  I had to find out the verdict on whether Nick was coming across as the complicated character he is.  It is all well and good for Lance to size people up in terms of the sharpness of their shark teeth for his own purposes, but that is a relatively simplistic view - but then again, Lance's perspective reflects his own rather more simple demands of life and of lovers.

...He knows his past behaviours are not appropriate in a proper relationship but he doesn’t have any other models of behaviour to follow – so ironically Jeremy will have to take the lead here – as he begins to demonstrate in that last chapter. But Jeremy has been in a state of sexual and emotional confusion himself so it may be the blind leading the blind for a while.
