One of my brothers (I've got 3) used to play first grade Rugby League here in New South Wales. He even captained a touring team once. He used to get really beat-up on the field. When I was a little boy, I remember seeing him all covered in mud and blood, after a "game." It's a tough game, and that's for sure.

Rugby makes American Football look like Barbie dolls. I hate to say it but it's true. Alex has told me horror stories of what happened to him when he played Rugby.

Not again. He won't play it again, as long as I have something to say about it.  >:(

Broadly speaking, David, there are two types of Rugby. They play Rugby Union in the UK, and Rugby League in the eastern states of Australia. Rugby Union is also played internationally by the Australian team, the Wallabies. Both are pretty rough-house games, but IMO Rugby League is rougher than Rugby Union. It was Rugby League that my brother played. He died from a cerebral haemorrhage in his early 40s. Whether or not it was as a result of all the biffo he was subjected to when he played Rugby, will never be known for sure.
