And may I say this:
Since you using the word hell,
that is one reason that either a remake, another or a serie, should be made;
because this film is not enough!! It is too much HELL!!
It also remains TOO MUCH violent, and too lacking in many ways, I say!!

I suggest that it could but must be done, if possible!!
Not necessarily be re-done!! Discussion could also make it much better,
as a II, re-make, another, and/or a serie !! And for many reasons!

That does not mean that the first film would not remain a classic!!

There is too much hell in it!! ??

For you too there is too much hell in it??

Well, I just used an expression.

I think what we have is perfect.

It had the intended effect.

To "remake" it on a happy basis would turn one of the most tragic love stories of all time, in the English language, into another Hollywood feel good film.

You HAVE to read the short story. I THINK Annie Proulx translated it into French herself, not sure about that. But if she did-- unlike many translations--you will get the original story.
