Pipedream:
Hi there! :)
Long time, no see! Some of you might have wondered already where the heck I was. I've just come back from China where we visited good friends of mine who live and work in Shanghai.
We had never been to Asia before, and it was all very exciting. Shanghai is sooo huge! It's fast, loud, crowded and smoggy, but also beautiful and charming. And I have never before experienced such fierce contrasts between rich and poor. The old beggars in the streets, men who transport everything they own on their bicycles, hip young metropolitan people in designer clothing, the huge, elegant skyscrapers and the modern subway which is so crowded at rush hours that you hardly get your hand down once you grab one of the handles above your head...
So many impressions! I'm so glad we did this. It was a terrific experience. And for the first time ever, I saw that English isn't always useful. Lol.
Here is the three of us on a beautiful restaurant terrace at Shanghai Peoples' Square:
One of the main shopping streets:
The old town where you can buy wonderfully silly stuff...
The Jade Budda Temple:
Me, little Franca and our hosts Frank and Astrid on the terrace of "New Heights", one of the nicest restaurants in town with a terrific view to the river Huangpu and the skyline of the Shanghai business quarter Pudong:
And my little girl in her new Chinese frocks... ;)
I love, love, love Chinese food!! But as you can see, we didn't have to just live on rice and tea. ;D
A Paulaner Biergarten with Munich wheatbeer right there in Shanghai! Who'd have thunk it?
Well, now I'm back in Bavaria again, working... I hope I can go back one day! But it's also nice to be back here on Bettermost. I missed my computer! And all of you, of course!
ANKE :-*

What great pictures, Anke! Thanks for sharing them. I'm so glad you had a pleasant visit; Shanghai seems like perhaps the most dynamic city in China. And as critic Jonathan Rosenbaum has written, the twenty-first century will belong to Asia.
Glad to hear from you, and welcome back to the fold.
Lumière:
Oh wow!! :D :D
These are so beautiful ANKE!
Your little Franca is so adorable in her Chinese outfit! :-*
Thanks so much for sharing these! :D
