brokebackjack:
Your Political Profile
You are a devoted Democrat. You tend to walk in lockstep with the party, even if you have not agreed with every decision Democratic leaders have made. The few differences you have are nothing compared to your complete and utter contempt for the Republican Party and the intolerance, fanaticism, and warmongering for which it stands.
I can deal with this.
The BJ sign had me on the floor. So did the Arkansas coin. I think Bill was a GREAT President, one who looks even better next to the asshole in power.

Yup. I'd vote for him again in a second.
About the comparison though, heck, NIXON looks good next to the asshole in power.

Nixon was in many ways a president--if you look at the historical record--who approached greatness. His conservative stance led to the greatest expansion of the social safety net in decades; odd but true. In Cold War politics he opened China--and we can't blame Tricky Dicky for the economic nightmare Bush and his cronies have allowed THAT relationship to become... He pushed for the Arms Treaty, which kept the lid on while the Soviet rotted. On the nnegative side he could not end Viet Nam's war. He was the president who inserted us into the Arab Israeli mess, which has become a disaster of the first magnitude for the uS and is 'The Why' of why we were attacked on 911--although his administration WAS even-handed, which we no longer are when it comes ton that conflict.
And while he himself was not a crook, he aided and abetted that huge cover-up called Watergate.

True, and then there was the invasion of Cambodia and the Christmas bombing of Vietnam and the destruction of public trust in the presidency, and ...
But on the plus side, Nixon was smarter than George W. Bush. In his expansion of domestic programs he is considered to have been left of Clinton (more a measure of the changing political climate than the two men's political stances). And Watergate was small -- and relatively harmless -- potatoes compared to the cover ups and constitutional abuses going on now.
brokebackjack:
Cambodia and the Christmas bombing all come under the heading of Viet nam, which he couldn't stop.
Neither could anybody else.
I remember a presidential candidate said something about just pulling out and he was wrecked that November. Nobody was willing to do it, everybody wanted it done.
I don't admire Nixon at all, but not at the expense of a larger historical truth.
I was a kid at the time; to this day it amazes me how many people scream about Viet nam whiule refusing to acknowledge it was politically impossible to 'just pull out.' The majority wouldn't go for it, the minority rioted. Stalemate domestically. What a mess.
Sort of like Iraq. I hate this business. And once we destroyed security in that country it has to be reestablished or we will be 10 times worse off then we were before we went in. Move out unilaterally and that is the end of American influence and power. Nobody will ever listen again. They will go their own way and say so what....because the accumulated actions of The Ass have made it so.,
Why this ass can't get it into his head that we need to ease into a timetable and let them buld their own govt is beyond me
