He picks such good roles it's really hard, but I'm gonna have to go with The Good Girl, followed VERY closely then by Donnie Darko and October Sky.
-
Jarhead all the way!
-
You need to add City Slickers to that list. He played Billy Crystal's son.
-
Nice to see you've pulled them in for the night Chris :D
-

I only put movies where he has a big role, I don't believe he did in CS.
-
ROFLMFAO! Nice Brandon.....real nice!

It was his first, should count for something.
Besides, that would be the one I would vote for. He was adorable!
-
Okee Dokee I added it
-
Donnie Darko all the way. What a freaky movie! The Day After Tomorrow bit, but at least he didn't die in it. I have to rent Jarhead just for the Santa Claus hat scene.
Juan
-
Okee Dokee I added it
Thanks, honey bun.
BTW, you're adorable too ;)
-
See I am one of the few that liked The Day After Tomorrow.....LOL
-
I liked it too
-
Oh good.....glad I'm not alone!
-
See I am one of the few that liked The Day After Tomorrow.....LOL
For me, The Day After Tomorrow falls into the category of "so bad, it was funny."
-
LMAO
-
I wanted to like it more, the special effects were great. Even living in New York, I still get a weird thrill out of seeing it destroyed. But oh the dialogue....and maybe there was something too regressive about seeing Jake play a high school student again.
Has anyone seen Proof? That got mixed reviews too, and I love Hope Davis as well. Maybe a Netflixer.
Juan
-
Jarhead!! *mmm*
Juan - I liked Proof! Well acted by all & just generally good. I like that it's based on a true story.
-

yeah, but he looked good in that movie.

Strange thrill out of seeing it destroyed? ROFLMFAO!
Yes Proof is really good......probably my third favorite Jake movie after BBM and Jarhead....Tony Hopkins is incredible!
-
I liked Proof too, I recommend it!
I went with Jarhead but man, that was the hardest choice I had to make all day... LOL
-
I know he has GREAT movies, I like just about every single one of them.
-
Jarhead!! *mmm*

Is it? That's interesting, good to know. Thanks! So is Jarhead, I thought. Course after A Million Little Pieces, I take it with more of a grain of salt. I never got to see Proof the play though, wish I had.
Juan
-
Jarhead is based on a memoir so yes it is a true story in many ways.....its REALLY good! Just watched it last night to the umpteenth billion time....
-
I voted for Jarhead, but I really love Jake in October Sky, The Good Girl, Donnie Darko, Day After Tomorrow and Proof...Can't wait for September for the new one!
-

Thanks, I just put it on my queue. I like Sam Mendes' work, and I forgot that Peter Sarsgaard is in it too.
Juan
-
Sam Mendes is a genius if you ask me...
He's not flawless (then again not even Spielberg is flawless) but its those little flaws that make his films what they are....IMHO
-
Chris I agree - I love Sam Mendes movies. I voted for Donnie Darko, but I was torn. I am one of the few that absolutely loves Moonlight Mile, and I love The Good Girl and Jarhead too. DD was the first Jake movie I saw though, and it's so excellent, that it holds a special place in my heart.
-

I liked Road To Perdition, and I was surprised Jarhead didn't do better. I've read that it's "too neutral" with regards to being pro- or anti-war. Maybe that's too hard to pull off in the midst of the Iraq fiasco. I did get to see his version of Cabarat on Broadway, liked that too.
Juan
-
Yeah its sad because Jarhead was seen as more of a political statement then a movie......so it was overlooked by critics and fan alike. Jake should have gotten an Oscar nom IMO and many people believed that he was going too....he was nothing short of brilliant...
-
Chris, again I completely agree. And I have to ask - I missed the "breasty" pic you had as your avatar, but I've read a number of comments about it and now I'm curious - who was the picture of? I'm assuming it wasn't of yourself, lol.
-
Well now I gots to see it! I was curious before, but now I'm looking forward to it. Thanks!
-

ROFL.....Mandy Moore....they've been makin fun of me all day!
-
LOL! Mandy Moore? I didn't even know that she had taken a picture that wasn't 100% wholesome! (I'm not knocking MM - I actually really respect her and I think she's adorable). From the comments I was expecting it to be Pam Anderson or something.

-
Yeah I love Mandy too, I can't wait for 'American Dreamz'
-
Who doesn't love Mandy.....if you don't love Mandy then YOU'RE the one with the problem! ;D ;) :)
JK
-
Yes, Mandy is adorable - and how cute are her and Zach Braff together? That is quite the dress she's rockin' in that picture! Brandon - I saw the trailer for American Dreamz when I went to see Thank You For Smoking, and it looks awesome. I hadn't really heard much about it before that but I definitely want to see it now.
-
I'll see it in a few weeks.....looks really good! How was Thank You for Smoking Nicole?
-
It's great! Very funny, very smart - no one side comes out smelling like roses and no one side is "right", which I liked. The only disappointment I had was Katie Holmes - she was really miscast in her role IMO. I would have much preferred someone a little older and with a little more....um.....acting ability in her role. Aaron Eckhart was really great as was William H. Macy and the rest of the supporting cast. We were laughing through the entire thing.
-
I'll check it out.....I agree on the Katie thing.
Besides the whole TomKat thing kinda grosses me out....
-
Besides the whole TomKat thing kinda grosses me out....
LOL! Yeah, kinda!!!! I seriously can't watch any of his movies anymore. Which sucks because I loved Top Gun, Rainman and A Few Good Men. Now they're all tainted with crazy.
-
I know....Top Gun was on TV the other night and I couldn't look at it the same....kept picturing Maverick jumpin on Oprahs sofa......LOL
-
Who doesn't love Mandy.....if you don't love Mandy then YOU'RE the one with the problem! ;D ;) :)
JK
yes, who doesn't love mandy??? ;D
-
ROFLMFAO!
I guess I backed into that one! Yes Mandster we love you too...
-
ROFLMAO! Aww gee thanks Chris... it's fun fishin' for compliments ::)
-
We missed you tonight.....how you doin?
-
you talkin to me? LOL I'm good, just working on a lot of crazy papers as usual... what're you up to?
-
Nope I'm talkin to Darth Vader! ROFL of course you...
Not much....just brushed my teeth...
-
well I don't know what Darth thinks, but that sounds like a very exciting night chris! ;D
-
ROFL....yes very exciting! Your just jealous.....LOL JK
-
LOL yes that must be it!
by the way, you and vic crack me up... that's all I'm saying!! ROFLMAO
-
Oh great.....you didn't read the tryin it out for size/fittin snug in the *beep* thing did you......I told you shes got a dirty mind......its not my fault! ROFLMFAO
I need to stop hangin out with you guys.....your corrupting me...LOL
-
LOL yep, that's the one...
we're corrupting you?? I think you have that backwards, friend, my young ears can't take the filth you two throw around ROFL JK!
-
Oh please....give me a break....your just as naughty as us.....if not MORE naughty! LOL JK
-
I know you know this, but you're missing one. I can't really vote for any of the others.
-
Lol yeah I know, but we would all choose it..
-
Yup, we would all choose it :)
I haven't seen 'Highway,' how is it?
I think Jake was wonderful in Jarhead and Proof and Moonlight Mile and The Good Girl...and The Bubble Boy :)
Love to all,
reanna ;D
-
I know....Top Gun was on TV the other night and I couldn't look at it the same....kept picturing Maverick jumpin on Oprahs sofa......LOL
ROFLMAO!!!! Oh THANKYOU! I haven't laughed all day, that felt so good!!
That "performance" of Tom Cruise (cause it sure as heck wasn't GENUINE) had the same effect on my upchuck reflex as my 6th shot of tequila. The guy is SUCH an Uncle Tom...
*shudder for Katie & Kid*
-
JARHEAD!! Can't wait to own it on DVD! Wanted to see it a 3rd time in the theaters, but it was already gone! :(

DonnieDonnie Darko!!
;D
-
I am with Sheyne DD is my favourite! Jake and his films are my favourite subject, I wish there was some sort of Jake degree you could take, needless to say I would get an A* for sure! But really you don't want me to start talking about Jake films or I will never shut up. When people ask me a question about his films I always ask...."Do you really want to pull at that thread?" But so I don't bore you senseless here is my top 10(of the ones I have seen):
1) Brokeback Mountain (of course)
2) Donnie Darko (which was my favourtie until BBM came along)
3) Jarhead
4) The Good Girl
5) October Sky
6) Proof
7) Bubble Boy
8 ) The Day After Tomorrow
9) Lovely and Amazing
10) City Slickers
I haven't yet seen Moonlight Mile or Highway cause they are so hard to get hold of, here in the UK, but I am working on it! ;D
-

DonnieDonnie Darko!!
------------------------------------------
I agree. :)
BBM 5 stars
Donnie Dark 4.5 stars. Gawd, he was good in that film. The film operates on some many layers. It's so filmosophy., i.e. philosophy mixed with a story. Glad ppl are discovering it.
Jarhead 3.0 stars. Jake did a great job, but for Sam Mendes, I had higher expectations.
-
I suspect you've got most votes for Donny Darko because, like mine, that's the only other one people have seen. You could find that out with another poll....
-
Donnie Darko! That look on his face... good acting.
Worst: Day After Tomorrow, but not because of him per se... the movie sucked.
-
Worst: Day After Tomorrow, but not because of him per se... the movie sucked.
Yup! One of the only movies of his that I don't own on dvd and don't plan to.
-
For all you Jarhead...heads. This was on IMDb's main page yesterday:
http://www.imdb.com/special/jarheadvod/index (http://www.imdb.com/special/jarheadvod/index).
Enjoy!
Juan
-
Worst: Day After Tomorrow, but not because of him per se... the movie sucked.
The effects were fantastic and he was absolutely delicious, but the movie was a total 'self gratification with the door locked' exercise!
-
You know, Jake could be in one of Mel Gilson's dead lauguage movies babbling on and on about who knows what and I would sit and listen to him all day.
-
Jarhead.
-
I voted Donnie Darko. Excellent, excellent movie. I love Richard Kelly and am sooo excited for Southland Tales (Jake will not be in it, in case you're wondering).
You know, Jake could be in one of Mel Gilson's dead lauguage movies babbling on and on about who knows what and I would sit and listen to him all day.
I'm right there with ya.
I really liked Jarhead and Jake was good in it but I rented it after I saw Brokeback in theatre, so it was so depressing to watch because I missed BBM. However, Jake did a really fine job of differentiating himself in the two movies. I probably would've thought of Jarhead as nothing more than an entertaining movie to watch once if it weren't for Jake.
-
I voted Jarhead, but right after it is Highway, and right behind that Proof and Bubble Boy.
-
I voted for Donnie Darko, but I love him in October Sky as well
-
I've been working my way through Jake's movies so I can make an informed vote, and I need to gush a little bit about Donnie Darko. :)
Wow.
You know how Ang Lee said that he didn't need to audition 'the boys' because he knew their work? I read somewhere that Heath's work in Monster's Ball is what clinched the Ennis role for him. So I've been wonderirng which previous roles of Jake's resulted in Ang Lee trusting him with Jack?
It *has* to be Donnie Darko. As I was watching this last night for the first time, I could not get over how much emotional range Jake puts into this movie. The role itself is almost like a actor's proving ground. Jake got a thorough workout here. This is the first movie of his (and I liked Proof and loved Jarhead) where I could really see so much of what Jake brought to Jack - the joy, confusion, hurt, resignation...I'm completely blown away.
Compare Donnie's apology to Gretchen - 'I'm sorry about those guys' with Jack ministering to Ennis after the bloody nose if you don't believe me...
OK..gush over for now...
:P
-
I picked "Jarhead". I didn't really like the movie all that much but I sure did love the Santa dance. ;)
-
I suppose this question is a little OT. Well, maybe not.
Didn't Jake play a very small part in the movie "Powder"? Did any of you all see that movie? I can't find it on DVD or VHS so I can't check, but I thought I saw him play the part of the son of the mother dying of cancer. The boy (Powder) came to visit her, and in the next scene, a guy who looks very much like Jake Gyllenhaal arrives. I really do think it was Jake. :-\
I should point out I did check over on IMDb and I didn't see him listed. But, the part was so small, they may have not included it in their list. They only show the son for something like 10 seconds. But, he really did look like Jake.
-
I can't answer your question, David...
But, Lynne, I am curious as to what films sparked Ang Lee's interest in the boys. I know The Station Agent was what made him choose Michelle and Anne auditioned for the part of Lureen and was chosen. I suppose Heath got it because of Monster's Ball (I mean, what else would it be? The Order?) but Jake had Donnie Darko, The Good Girl, October Sky, Bubble Boy (I hope that wasn't the winner), Lovely & Amazing, and Moonlight Mile under his belt before Brokeback began filming.
Jake and his films are my favourite subject, I wish there was some sort of Jake degree you could take, needless to say I would get an A* for sure! But really you don't want me to start talking about Jake films or I will never shut up.
Becky, you and me have this in common. :)
~
Okay, I rented Moonlight Mile a few weeks ago and I really liked it. I wanted to mention it because Jake was excellent in it. (And he was just adorable in City Slickers.)
-
I choose "The Day After Tomorrow" because I haven't seen any of his other movies yet.
-
When I first saw "Day After Tomorrow" I thought it was one of the worst movies I've ever seen but in talking to friends about the improbablity of the entire movie, well, I haven't laughed so hard in quite a while. Computer-generated mutant wolves on the abandoned Russian ship?? But now I know, should the polar ice caps melt, I can outrun computer-generated mutant wolves and flood waters and if I'm from France I need my passport.
Best line in the movie is Jake's: "Look, look, look look, look. This storm is going to get bad. It's going to get really really bad."
 cc33
I really loved Jake's performance in "Jarhead" and liked the movie overall better than I thought I would. Usually Jake is a brooding emotional character and he really did an outstanding all-out performance in "Jarhead" (And I'm not just talking about his physique!) I loved "Donnie Darko" and "The Good Girl." Jake's character carried the whole plotline of "Moonlight Mile." I liked that movie, didn't love it. My next movie to rent is Proof.
-
Good news for all Donnie and Jake fans alike. I was recently watching a list of 50 films to see before you die. I was happily watching and learning about all these films I had never heard of and noting the names etc. cause I don't want to have an unfulfilled life when I die! ::) But anyway it was coming up to 1 in the morning and I was getting tired so as I was about to switch off I was the words on screen:
Number 9:
Donnie Darko
I was so excited I started jumping, I don't know why, I think I was just tired. But anyway it was basically just saying great Donnie was and how well Jake played him. Yeah I must have quite a boring day cause this was my highlight. I of course thought Brokeback should have been in there, but I then realised that Brokeback is too new. I don't even remember what number 1 was, so it couldn't have been that great. But atleast Donnie was in the top 10. ;D
-
I've so far seen six of these movies, and I voted for The Good Girl - though not for Jake's acting, honestly. More for plot, and most of the other actors - Jennifer Aniston, Tim What'sHisName What'sHisName (I'm sorry, I'm tired and lazy right now. I keep thinking it's Charles Nelson Reilly, but I KNOW that's not it :) ), Zooey Deschanel.
For Jake's acting, I guess I would pick Donnie Darko.
-
I concur, Clarissa. After Jack Twist, of course, Donnie Darko is by far my favorite character of Jake's. And it's not just because the characters are both so interesting on the page - it's because of the life he breathed into them. Like Jack, Donnie exists separately from Jake to me. So he's done that twice for me, now. Only one other actor has done that even once for me, and that of course is Heath's Ennis.
Gretchen: What the hell kind of name is 'Donnie Darko'? It sounds like a superhero or something.
Donnie: What makes you think I'm not?
;D
Do you know what my favorite moment of his is in that one, though, in a movie full of favorite moments? When he sees that the Chinese girl has written his name on her book cover when she drops it in the hallway and runs off, and he smiles after her. What a lovely scene, and what a lovely person Donnie is that he isn't appalled or disgusted by a kind of unattractive girl having a crush on him - he's sincerely flattered.
-
Only Brokeback Mountain, I enjoyed and I wish he will be in the BM II !
-
The first Jake movie I watched was October Sky and I remember thinking "Oh...that´s guy is good. Hope I´ll see more of him"
then I lost track of him for a few years, remember seing Donnie Darko but never really connected with it or his character. And then there was Brokeback Mountain...
Now I´ve seen all his movies, and besides BBM, October Sky is my favorite. I think he really portrays Homer Hickham really well and I love his scenes with Chris Cooper. Gold!
-
I picked The Good Girl.
-
No other, and I still desire Jake G. as in Brokeback Mountain II as the next movie ! Man to man hugs and caress !!
