Title: We all know the grief, but how about the humor, the fun stuff?

We all have favorite parts.  What part makes you laugh the most?  I always laugh when Jack does his pretend bull ride in camp the first summer, falls down, and Ennis says, "I guess my Daddy was right."  and I can't help but laugh with Lureen when Jack tells her Daddy "Now you sit your ignorant ass down before I knock it into next week!" 
There is a lighter side to BBM. It's just not a strong as the serious side, but it's there and I'm glad it is.

Yes i love the part where Jack tells his father in law to sit down....his choice of words are so good, and i always get a chuckle from them....

And the admiring look on Laureens face when he does it....

Makes jack seem like he is ten foot tall......

One of my favorite scenes on the mountain comes after Ennis sees the bear. The whole conversation about maybe shooting one of the sheep and then Ennis says "We're supposed to guard the sheep, not eat 'em."  In fact, that line is on my Brokeaholic bumper sticker. Then Ennis shoots the elk and says "I'm tired of your dumb-ass missin'" I get a kick out of that whole section.

Just thought of a funny bit, that I always notice......

When Aguire throws Ennis the watch, and he tries to put it on his wrist and it is too small to go around......the look on his face is gorgeous......

I never noticed that Ennis tries to put the watch on, Katie77, I'll have to look at that again....any excuse to watch the movie one more time!

Hey tamarack, what exactly do the boys say to each other in the "shooting the elk scene"??  I can never understand what Jack says.

Rayn, I turn the subtitle feature on when I can't understand a line. I also have the "Story to Screenplay" book which I recommend. After whooping when Ennis nails the elk  Jack says "Let's get a move on. Don't want the Game and Fish catch us with no elk." They obviously don't have a license so don't want to get caught.

In "Ed Wood" with Johnny Depp, the cops come by while they are shooting a scene in public. Ed/Johnny says, "We don't have a permit. RUN!" Which would also be apt in this case.

There are some subtle things (like the watch) that I hadn't noticed. Always an excuse to watch it agin!

Oops - I got sidetracked and forgot to mention what I thought was funny. Definitely Lureen at the T-day dinner table. I love the scene where Ennis is going to see Jack after 4 years and he starts sitting by the window early in the day, watching for Jack, nervously flicking his Bic, drinking beer and smoking but not moving away from the window. The awkward pause in Aguirre's trailer before the boys realize they are 'dismissed.'

There are some amusing 'sight gags', too:

1. The sign on Aguirre's trailer door: 'Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again'.

2. The name 'Versatile' on the tractor Jack is driving with his son Bobby.

3. The newpaper ad for 'Honey' just before the scene cuts to Jack saying to Lureen, 'Honey, have you seen my blue parka?'

Oh, ok, Jack says that so fast I could never understand it.... I'm in Asia with a DVD that only has one language on the subtitles, no English, so I can't use the subtitle feature, though I wish I could.  Thanks Coffeecat33!
And thanks for your additions to the fun...   Hey let's remember them jumpin' naked into the river ... I always get a kick out of that, what a fun thing to do!

The expression of Ennis's face the morning after the FNIT when he first sits up...Jack saying "give 'em hell" when Ennis talks about going up to the sheep before the FNIT...

I USED to laugh outloud every time I'd see ther scene where Ennis punches Jack ouit...until asomeone explained to me that Ennis is informing Jack (a sort of pre-inform) that "it ain't gonna be that way." Jack was perefctly cheerful when he told Ennis "says, 'Bring 'em down'"...he doesn't realize that Ennis's plans are exactly the same as thery were at the beginning of the summer--that's why Ennis is so miserable about missing "a month's pay," and Jack doesn't seem to giver a damn.

I think it was more the fact that their "love in" on the mountain was going to be over, that hurt Ennis more, than the one months pay......

I too see that scene of Ennis waking up the morning after the FNIT...hair ruffled, jeans around his knees, remembering, thinking to himself "What the f***".....,
no doubt had a huge headache too......

Katie, I thought the same thing as you did when I saw the movie.  I'm wondering though how in touch Ennis was with this "being in love" at that time.   

I get the impression, from the way many men are, and I am one of them, that Ennis' grumbling about the loss of pay is only surface and his true feelings are more connected with his having to leave a truly rich and pleasant experience with Jack.  Men are often like that when they aren't aware or connected to deeper feelings they can't or won't admit.  A man will  bitch about the loss of pay when really he's lost his heart but can't say it because it's to another man! 

So, you and twisteddude may both be correct about Ennis on different levels.

O.K. I'm gonna excplain ONE MORE TIME. Ennis arrives in camp to find Jack CHEERFULLY striking the--set (tent). Jack doesn't seem to have a care in the world (his feelings are hurt when Ennis refuses his loan of money). That's because Jack doesn't realize that Ennis's plans for the rest of his life have not changed a bit. he may not feel he has a lock on Ennis, but is far from feeling that the end of the summmer on the mouintain is the end of theire being together (for some years).

Ennis, on the other hand, immediaterly gets mad as hell, ostensibly at Aguirre's cutting them out of a month's pay, but actually at having the summer with Jack cut short---and Ennis knows, as Jasck does not, that Ennis's plans for gettingt married have not changed one bit. That's what engaged guys do; get married...so Ennis is miserable, and Jack remains cheerful --until Ennis socks him hard when Jack is trying to console him...at this point, Jack realizes that Ennis is ...saying goodbye, with a wallop-. There ain't gonna be n0 more Jack and Ennis.

I hope that's clear as mud. befroe the sock, Jack doesn't know exactly what's going to happen next, buyt he's confident it includes the two of them being together somehgow. Ennis is miserable because--through his own doing--he's not going to be seeing Jack anymore. The sock communicates this to Jack.

I understand how you see it, Twistedude, so no explaining is needed for me at least.   But how does one explain Ennis's surprise that is took Jack so long to contact him?  That's in the Motel scene after the reunion, he says, "I figured you was sore over that punch I gave you." i.e.  Ennis thought Jack was angry at him for the whallop. 

As I see it, Ennis  did want to see Jack again, but wanted Jack to contact him first. That is why he's soooo very happy to see him in the reunion. 

It is Ennis, afterall, after years, who pulls Jack into the stairway to kiss him with all the pent up and stored lust and longing he had saved for Jack.   That's how I see it.  There is always room for different views and not everyone has to agree. 

That is what art is all about.  It's an individual and group experience as well.     Can we get back to the topic now???  Humor in the Movie, please?

Yes, right from the start, Jack's spunkiness and Ennis' more humble approach to things and people are clear and the humor the two create is too.   Good example, TJ.

Oh yes, and how symbolic, that the same theme continued throughout the whole movie.....Jack up and ready to move on, while Ennis, still tying knots, holding back making sure everything was "tied up" properly.

I thought it was kind of funny to see Ennis get drunk and on all fours.  He was usually the more reserved one, but not here.  I also like it when he points to the sheeps, like he's gonna go there just by pointing.

I also laugh when Ennis almost trip over their grill when Jack invites him into the tent just before FNIT.  I could imagine if there's a wall there, he'll run right through it.

Yes, the tripping over and knocking things as he stumbles to the tent is some fun "business" that was well done.

i do chuckle during the summer 63 scene... but how come none crossing my mind NOW???

all i can think off instead, are the sentimentals ones...

ohh...there is one,..

when Ennis introdues jack to Alma,...there may be a 2 ricther earthquake on where the guys are standing.

the ounding chest.. oh so highschool.

Ennis should have worn himself a sign "i am in Love!!"

Tell you what... he didn't need a sign. We and Jack (and Alma) could see it anyway. Though maybe Jack's vision might have been a bit impaired by his own sign  ;).


A funny classic hasn't been mentioned yet: "Tent don't look right." Cracks me up every time. The whole following conversation is funny and cute; love our boys bantering. But Ennis's initiatory remark is truly a classic.

always consider it a high-level entertainment.

As a wife and mother I have done that many many times.....worry sick, when husband or kids are late or havent turned up as expected, then when they arrive safe, yell at them, for being late.......

I often have a giggle about Jack....he is like a husband who has been out working all day and gets back to find the wife isnt there cooking his dinner.....

that's the thing isn't it? i remember Oprah W said on her interview with the cast, that there is no streotype.

i meant, the way i see it, sometimes Jack acted "masculin" as in the above example,  he was also the one who was more aggresive in this relation ship. did the driving, the contacting, the "proposals"...

but in the other way we can also see Ennis performed his manly jobs, (shot down the elk if that counts, that counts in my place though...girsl can't shoot here),  doing little things what a man would do for his loved one.

they are simply complementary to each other, fulfiling each other's need.

i hope many relations can be at their level of loving.

A scene that's not only funny, but charming, and one many people don't talk too much about is Ennis and Alma in the snow on their honeymoon.  I love the sheer joy of their new marriage and need to recall this when I think of their darker times and the end of their marriage.

I love Laureen's quick smirk when Jack tells her daddy to sit his "ignorant ass down...etc..."    Laureen loves her Dad, but there's that "To know him is to love him thing" going on there too, eh?

Hi Rayn- I'm glad you had an awesome time in Alberta,

I love it when Ennis and Jack are riding with the sheep and Jack is playing the harmonica, and Ennis says to Jack, "You'll run the sheep off again if you don't quiet down." Ennis then looks at Jack with a big smile as they move along.

Love that scene.  :) I think that it is so charming and indicates the feelings that Ennis has for Jack.

Hmmm. Never thought of that.  Learn a new way of seeing things in this movie all the time.  Even after 4 years.
