Title: COLLECTOR'S EDITION DVD Release
Post by: Front-Ranger on July 20, 2006, 12:56:32 pm
There are some rumours of an expanded DVD hitting the market, in France and/or Australia. I would luv to hear about where this can be purchased. I have just about worn out the basic DVD I've had since April!!

Thanks for the link!

Anyone able to find out what the 2-disc set contains? My French is passable enough that I'm able to read the link or most of it - but though it does certainly say it's a 2-disc collector's edition I can't manage to see what, if anything, it says concerning what's on those 2 discs. The one customer comment and the product information is general info/comments about the story itself, not about the content of the DVDs as such.

New bonus material? Deleted scenes? Commentary tracks? etc? Anyone else here manage to locate more information on this? I'm dying to know!

I'm in the same boat - comprehend some, but not much.  I'm going to PM a few of our French-speakers and see if they can shed some light on this!

I remembered read a thread about this over IMDb a while ago.  If it’s the same one, then basically there is nothing that we have not seen.  Vaguely remember that the additional DVD or CD contains the short story and may be some promotional materials (?).

I hope I am wrong.

This is what I had an inkling it might be ........ it seemed very strange and downright unlikely that they'd just specifically release a French version of the REAL, BIG THING we're all hoping and waiting for, and with so lilttle fanfare or marketing......?  :-\

But I too hope that we're wrong in this, of course.

I'm afraid there's nothing new on this French version, based on the information at Amazon.  It lists the following for the second DVD:

DVD 2:
Le documentaire "Ang Lee, un réalisateur de coeur" (7 min)
Le documentaire "Etre cowboy" (6 min)
Du script au film (11 min)
Le Making Of (20 min

--a total of just 42 minutes, and it's all on the one-disk American version (I copied this in from American Amazon):

"Directing From the Heart: Ang Lee" featurette
"On Being A Cowboy" featurette
From Script to Screen: Interviews with Larry McMurtry & Diana Ossana
"Sharing the Story: The Making of Brokeback Mountain" featurette
Title: Collector and Prestige BBM DVDs being released...
Post by: isabelle on July 23, 2006, 08:27:32 am
In France only!

This week, 2 BBM dvds came out here:
* The collector's dvd, containing 2 dvds: one with the film, plus the trailer, plus several dozen still shots of the film and its making. The other with documentaries we've all seen: the making of the film (on how hard it was to get the project actually going); on being a cowboy; from film to script with Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry; and an interview of Ang Lee. Most of the latter is on the British (and US?) dvd.

* The Prestige edition: contains all of the above, plus Annie Proulx's short story (in French), plus something which in French could either mean a card deck with pics of BBM, OR a bunch of actual photographs (probably the latter), PLUS a piece of the film that was used to shoot. Of course, this is a limited edition.

It would seem that there is never going to be any dvd with cut scenes or goofs, though.

The only thing that appears to be available on this edition, that wasn't available on the North American edition that I've got is on the 1st dvd - still photos (Photo Gallery <La galerie de photos >) and promotional clips/movie trailers <Les bandes-annonces>

The second DVD contains the same 4 shorts that have already been seen by all of us in North America - Wasn't this also part of the France original DVD release?

 - hardly warranting a double DVD!

The same thing was done with the German version of Latter Days. They took all the features on the US (Region 1) disc and split it into two for Germany (Region 2). I'm wondering if the region 2 discs maybe don't hold as much info, possibly they have a higher resolution for European tvs . . . anybody know?

Yeah, somone needs to write to FOCUS asking what the deal... They are teasin us if they expect their initial release to satisfy us.   In the past FOCUS rereleased a deluxe ETERNAL SUNSHINE as the inital DVD had record breakign sales. So it's not like FOCUS has no precedence for doing a deluxe DVD.

Don't hold yer breath.    If Focus features & Ang Lee was smart they will release a "Directors" cut in time for the holidays, but keep in mind that James Cameron waited eight years until he released the Directors cut of Titanic!

Post by: LauraGigs on October 24, 2006, 07:58:29 pm
I just hope this lives up to the hype, and to all our desires to see more footage from the movie — such as deleted footage from the 2nd tent scene that Ang supposedly left out (damn you Ang!!)

"Never-before-seen footage" can mean anything: the 2nd assistant boom operator scratching his armpit, et cetera.  Can't tell you how pissed I'll be if it doesn't include any deleted scenes!

(And yes, I understand that the original release was the 'director's cut', and so any deleted scenes will be under a seperate menu. That's fine! Just bring them the f—k ON, Focus Features!!)

Now wait, Laura, which "his armpit?"  Do you mean Ennis's or Jack's?  :)  'Cause either one'd be okay....

Yeah, what's the significance of 1/23/07.    Now all  I want for X-mas is a Circuit City gift certificate for USD 22.98 and a plasma tv to watch BBM on.

Another date in January, usually a dreary month to look forward to. Saw the movie on 1/7/06.  I wonder what's taken them so long to release the collector's edition. Talk about draggin their heals. Maybe our patience will be worth the wait as FOCUS has worked very hard to put out a commerative edition of their most financially successful film.

Some things to fill up Disc 2 would be...

1)Of course, deleted scenes.

2)A voiceover commenatry by the director.  Perhaps with the two lead actors talking along as well.

3)A sitdown interview with Annie Proulx.  Would she? Doubt it.

4) Doct with BBM as cultural phenomena. Certainly a movie that rocked the world.

5) Suprise me.
Those are things I want.

Something I'd like added to the DVD is an analysis by CaseyCornelius of the artistic values many miss out

Also love the idea of a countdown to the release - Gotta talk to Phillip about that one!

A scrolling banner would be nice, and a countdown calendar would be nice.....   Can ya tell I am super-excited about this?

I am a little worried though, does anyone know if will be available at regular retail stores, or is Universal Video some kind of mail order operation?  Cause ordering stuff to be mailed to Canada is one GDBOAUS!  We even have a guy just today, in BC, who is launching a Class Action lawsuit against UPS because of broker charges re:  shipments from the States sent to Canada.  You have no idea how bad it gets!

So..... Hey Milli, Roland, Casey, will we be able to buy it in the stores on Jan. 23rd?

(Still don't know what I'd have done back in January without "4 nights in 20 years" and other little film snippets on the net!)

That aside, Yay!!! for the fact that the special edition is finally coming. I'm looking forward to the further details of what is actually in the bonus material. Please, please, please let there be a Heath/Jake/Anne/Michelle commentary track!

Hardly come here in two-three weeks and then BOOM! This is what I find.

YIPPEEEEE!!!!

Maybe if I disappear again for a month, I'll come back to find Ang himself giving us an interview, or some such thing!

I love the suggestions for extra features, especially about CaseyCornelius--he (or she) definitely deserves to be on that thing!

But after all our hopes and plans and ruminations on what might be on the first DVD, I will try to restrain my expectations--after all, there's still the 10th and 20th anniversary editions to look forward to  ;).

(well, Jane, I personally think that Gun Goin' Off Day should be the Full Moon of June, or July, depending on what you think it was. But I loved the association, thanks Elle.)

I still think these DVDs should be released at the same time in all parts of the world so people don't have to wait. It isn't fair.

Geeft niet, je kan er niks aan doen...

I think so too, I think it's so unfair.

All Europeans and Australians are warmly invited to Seattle to view the 2 disc set in its entirety on January 24th, 2006.  We have one guest bed, two couches, floor space for sleeping bags, and a back yard for puptents.

I have already mentioned to husband that the Collectors' DVD is coming out on Jan 23rd.  Let's hope he gets the hint.

I know I will be buying one for a friend in China.   Just chat with her over one hour on MSN about BBM.  I have recommended the movie to her the beginning of this year, but she just saw it two days ago.  Already twice for her.  She mentioned that she has asked some of the girls in her office to watch the movie with her this weekend.  Nothing beats talking about BBM with a person who just saw the movie and desperately needs someone to talk about how the movie has shaken her to the core.  It gave me the goose bumps all over again.  Since she loves the movie, she should watch the movie in its original format, not some pirated version with misleading subtitles.

That's what I was thinking this morning.  Between Eric's announcement of the DVDs and Front-Ranger's letting us know that Annie Proulx says we are not overanalyzing, it's a fine week in Brokiedom.

Hey Euros and Australians: same here.  Our sunny Colorado casa has a full guest bath, nice yard and a big-screen TV & nice speakers for Mountain viewing.  And we can drive you around the lovely, similar terrain we have here or in nearby Wyoming.

(And maybe later you can host us or at least give us pointers when we visit your cool country . . .)

Ya had me goin' there for a minute star. :D

Honestly though, to some point I agree.  I think the movie as it is is a masterpiece.  Not a thing needs to be added or detracted.  I'm interested in seeing some extras, but what do we know about the extras?  I don't particularly care about the 'hippie scene', I'm interested more in scenes of the two of them together or more intimacy, but I know such scenes don't exist.  There is probably a few more minutes in the closet scene at the Twist's and maybe a scene at Jack's grave.

I'm all for the commentary if it's a good one.

What else do you think?

I love watching DVD commentaries, even for movies I only kind of like.  I've learned most of what I know about film-making that way. :)

I've heard Ang has never done a DVD commentary, but there are so many people I would be very happy to hear too.  Shoot - even some of our knowledgeable fellow Brokies. :)

There's a commentary made by Ang Lee and James Shamus on the Sense and Sensibility DVD. They are always going on about 'the sheep'. Apparently they had a lot of trouble shooting the 'sheep' scenes' in that movie (luckily there weren't many), which made Ang Lee decide never to do a film with sheep again!
Thank God, he changed his mind about that.

The commentary on the dvd is nice, he does talk about how they did certain scenes and why.

Wow!  That really does look like a beautiful packaging design.  Mel, I agree, it looks much better than the old original with the Oscars border (which I have too).  I'm just so excited about the special features too.

So, are we to believe that those four little pictures on that ad are some of the postcards? I wonder if one of the special postcards will replicate Jack's first postcard.  How do you all feel about the postcard idea?  I can see why the marketers might have picked up on that as a theme, but the postcards just seem so important and personal and emotional in the movie/ story that it feels a little funny to me to turn them into a marketing device.  But, I'm still excited all the same.  The movie deserved much better treatment than that original bare-bones packaging.

I like 'XMess too'  Nice :).  But what's all this grumbling about the holidays, anyhow?  ???

I'm a hunnerd percent sure everybody on my list wants/needs a DVD or a soundtrack or a calendar or a poster.   ::)

More ideas include a Tshirt from Jenny's store, bumperstickers from cafepress, donations to various causes:  HRC, Matthew Sheppard, PFLAG, etc...on someone's behalf.

EBay has some nice black and white prints you can get for framing if you need to spend a little more.  I just bought some blue w/white speckles enamel cookware for preparing the holiday meal :).

Jack has even demonstrated the proper way to carve a turkey.

What we really need is a print run of holiday cards with some of our favorite scenes.

All-in-all, I think we're pretty well-positioned for this holiday season.

I don't know what UNIVERSAL is thinking. "Denim's Collections," the packaging is denim? I'd be happy with plastic packaging and all the extras there getting in Taiwan as  I'd make my own denim covering for thespecial edition.   :)  Cut up a pair of blue jeans and affix it to the DVD's covering.

Lee is from Taiwan. I wonder if that's why there getting special treament? The PRC censored the film, well the govt said there would be a lack of interest in such a film, so that's why it wasn't shown there. Whatever.

Just a day after I read about the collector's edition, Brokeback showed up in our little town's (pop. 2,500) combo dime store and Radio Shack outlet - in the full screen edition! Horo35.

That's the same info I got that I posted under "Don't kill the messenger." Am I suppose to fork out some more money for this?  Ain't right.  We need director's commentary and deleted scenes.

A copy of the script would be nice as wells as a map of ALberta with red dots indicating filimng locations. Ain't gonna happen, the latter part, but those woul be cool extras for their devoted fan base.   That's what I'd insert if I were puttin together the DELUXE BBM DVD. Don't know what Focus is up to.

I gotta write a letter to the producer of the film at Focus saying BBM is worth more then what your coming out with.    :'(   Maybe other's should write in as well. Don't know what good it will do. Gotta find the mailing address for Foucs. If I do, I will post it.

Daniel, you collect BBM dvds issues in other countries?  That's a new one. I've heard of ppl collecting the movie poster of their favorite film in other languages. I'd like a copy of the BBM movie poster in Italian. I presume the photo is the same, just the language is different. I got the American version framed and they did a real nice job framing it.  Looks good in a black frame of course.

Here's the contact addres at FOCUS FEATURES.

100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, Ca 91608

Phone number: 818-777-7373

Maybe I should call first to find out whose attn I should direct a letter to, expressing that many view the BBM dvd (deluxe) scheduled for release is lacking on many extras, especially in comparison to what is for sale in Taiwan.   Laura, you wanta call?  ;)    If they plan on waiting longer for a director's cut, it won't be as financially lucrative as interest will start to wane.

That's true, already my interest is falling.  Basically I'm looking forward to a possible Alberta get-together next year than thats pretty much it for me. I too find this "Collector's Edition" to be less than satisfying - downright offensive & I don't intend to buy it. Give me something other than picture cards  -

Geez!   When they said "Postcards" were being enclosed I thought they meant copies of all the postcards sent between Jack and Ennis.  Not just pics of the same old still shots we have all seen before.   :(

Indeed, I agree with Melissa.

I too find this "Collector's Edition" to be less than satisfying - downright offensive & I don't intend to buy it. Give me something other than picture cards  -

WE NEED THE DELETED and alternate SCENES!!!!!!!

Yes, who needs postcards when we could have the deleted scenes and alternate scenes (I was gonna write alternate endings, but that's a bit much to ask... ;D)

It is a let down if that's all they'll put in the discs.  I've been waiting for something like this also for months.  Hopefully, they'll put more stuff in it.  Maybe someone here with more courage than me will buy it and tell us if it's really worth it.

Hrmpf.  I was afraid of this.  No other Ang Lee movies that I know of have deleted scenes . . . so I don't think we're ever gonna get any with BBM.  I probably shouldn't be disappointed, but I will definitely wait until you all have reviewed the release before I buy.  Just a few of the scenes that were shot but not included (gravesite, Ennis working on the Stoutamire place) would be neat - but perhaps I can be brought over to what apparently is Ang's side of the argument - those scenes just don't belong in our head because they don't tell the story he wanted to tell . . .  :-\

About the new DVD (mine hasn't come yet)---it SAID on it what was new, and it was like nearely zilch. And as for there being "extra movie film" in it---just count the minutes---2 hours, 15 minutes (sound familiar?). How can there be scenes we haven't seen when it's exactly the same length...they probably just cut the FNIT, or something...

So why'd i order it? There's always a chance somerthing wonderful will show up...

Someone is trading a fullscreen for a widescreen? I haven't OPENED my widescreen yet.
Watch the fullsacreen all the time.

From what I understand, there is not a whole lot of new stuff there, so I'm probably not going to bother myself.  Around the time of release, expect to see some further price declines - Overstock is well known for that and I should be able to find some coupons for free shipping or added discounts.
Title: Re: The Collector's Edition PRICE!
Post by: Kd5000 on January 10, 2007, 01:12:18 pm
They have actually dropped the price. Originally, they were going to sell it for USD 23.XX.  Now it's down to USD 19.XX.   No doubt UNIVERSAL has been bombarded with emails, etc. protesting this rip-off deluxe DVD and knows they had better lower their price.

I mean how stupid do they think consumers are, i.e. that they are going to shell out another USD 23.XX just to get some postcards and a a few added features about the music and the BBM phenomena.   Who needs that?

Donnie Darko, (I'm only referencing that because it's another Jake film) got far better treatment and it made less then USD 1,000,000 at the box office.  It makes no sense.

Is the director's commentary going to be a track that we can listen to while watching the movie?

Although I would rather have commentaries from a lot of people (writers and tech people especially), I might buy the collector's edition just to hear what Ang Lee has to say. Though I'll wait until I hear reviews from people here first...

To my mind, they have totally missed the point of having such a wide base of fans that are so deeply interested in Brokeback Mountain. Just a few of the out takes would have had me lining up to buy this edition. Imagine the giggle parties watching Jake keep losing it, as he was suppose to be picking up the cinematographer Rodrigo in Mexico. Not to mention the snarf worthiness of the deleted hippy recuse scene. Hmmm... 13 takes of FNIT, well... how about Jake near covering a screen with those takes being projected behind him, as he tells the audience... No, no, you folks really don't need to see all of this. (add slight panicked expression as he does this; fade to black)  There is so much they could have done, that might have even gotten folks that have never seen the film interested in it just from the extra material, and it looks to me like they blew it.

Will I buy it?  Eventually, when it hits the bargain bins in about six weeks after it's released. I can wait for what little new they are offering. I have the master piece itself to savor.

A virtual Easter egg is a hidden message or feature in an object such as a movie, book, CD, DVD, computer program, or video game. The term draws a parallel with the custom of the Easter egg hunt observed in many western nations.

OK, I just found this in this morning's Philadelphia Inquirer and had to share it.

The Weekend section of the Friday paper always includes an article on new DVD releases, and this week's article included the two-disc collector's edition.

The article also includes the old-chestnut photo that we've all seen a thousand times of Heath and Jake leaning against the pickup. The caption for the picture reads:

"Heath Ledger (left) and Jake Gyllenhaal play shepherds who fall in love in 'Brokeback Mountain.' ..."

"Shepherds"? Maybe technically accurate, but--whatever happened to "the Gay Cowboy Movie"?

I dunno...I hear shepherds and think middle Eastern garb, a star in the heavens and a so-called virgin in a barn.  Where do two gay guys fit into that?  Oh wait...the three queens bearing accesorizable gifts.

In the interview, Pierre mentions 2 deleted scenes (from his description, probably the hippie scene and the scene showing the mechanics that briefly flashed in some previews).

But he also says: "Two scenes that I would have liked to see more of were the rodeo sequence when Jack meets Lureen and the 4th of July scene.  ...I was in charge of directing background performers(extras) and we had arranged for some additional rodeo events..."

In other words, there are 2 deleted scenes — but more (possibly many more) scenes that were reduced or cut short. (Tent scene 2 immediately comes to mind.)  Wouldn't it be great to have that extra footage!

And after, when Jack gives him a brand new rifle after Ennis brings him the beans, the moment only being shattered by Ennis' refusal to accept such an expensive gift.  Another disappointing moment for Jack.

Serious question--do we know if the business with the rifle was filmed? I think I remember reading script for it somewhere, but that's all I know. I presume the longer scene with the cans of beans was filmed because I've seen a still shot of it, and in the film, after we hear Jack telling Ennis, "You're late!" we can just hear Ennis say, "Look what I brung," or something close to it, and I'm sure he's talking about the cans of beans.

On a second thought, I just noticed that he wears the "death jacket" (like I call it) in this pic. The one he wears from the pie scene on throughout the rest of the movie. The one which is so eerily similar to the one his father wears.
I wonder what this scene was about and even more at what time of the movie it had been scheduled to take place?
But maybe there was never a scene about this pic. Maybe it's just a promotional shot (like the ones with Ennis and Jack leaning on Jack's old truck)?

I bought it: first day and it's already on sale! USD 19.99, with a regular price of 26.99.

Pretty blue box.

Three extras:

1) lame slide show of stills.  I've seen much better on this site.

2) interesting featurette on the music.  always nice to hear Gustavo.  brief stuff from Rufus, even briefer from Teddy.

3) "a groundbreaking success" which is on the film disc, not the bonus disc for some reason.  17 minutes of talking heads, mostly focusing on the success of a gay love story, talk about queer cinema, a few new quotes from Jake and Heath.

Oh, and a few postcards.  Only thing new was a facsimile of the "coming thru on the 24th" postcard.

I had low expectations and wasn't disappointed. :)

Thanks for that review.  It sounds pretty much like what I'd expect based on all the rumors I've heard up until now.  It would be sort of fun to have a facsimile of the Coming Thru postcard.  I'm very disappointed in the bonus material on the discs.  I still feel like this film deserves better.

Here's a very thorough review of the new Collector's Edition, clearly by a fellow Brokie:

DVD Review: The New Brokeback Mountain Collector's Edition Leaves Questions Unanswered
Written by Jet in Columbus
Published January 23, 2007

I want to make something really clear up front.

My very first article for BC Magazine was an enthusiastic and loving tribute to Brokeback Mountain. I’ve written a few more on the subject that were just as positive afterward, so it’s a fair assessment that I’m a fan. I make this statement because I found this new edition a disappointment, not because of the storyline or the production values, but because I was expecting — no I was hoping for — what I didn’t get.

With the addition of the unused amount of space afforded on a second disc, I expected DVD extras such as outtakes and flubbed lines. After reading reports of how the original film had to be edited from nearly three hours down to two hours and fourteen minutes, I wanted to see what was edited out. Any true fan of the film would welcome — no, downright relish — the chance to enjoy a two and a half hour or even longer version, just to see what was missed and to satisfy a hunger for more of the story.

Perhaps more than all the other unanswered questions, I’d hoped to discover the solution to the mysterious missing scenes from the movie that have been taunting me for over a year now.

Missing scenes?

I’ll get to that in a moment and present evidence of them.

When it all comes down to it, if you don’t own a DVD version of Brokeback Mountain yet or have a brand new HD/DVD player, then you should definitely buy this edition now. This is a glorious and beautiful presentation of an incredible film that’s not to be missed. The HD in HD/DVD is obvious and magnificent.

However, if you already own the original DVD released in 2006 don’t bother with this one. Instead, try holding out for a director’s cut version further down the road and hope it’s not until a tenth anniversary edition is released.

Here’s why.

Having seen the movie repeatedly - having for all intents and purposes memorized this DVD - having put up an entire tribute web page to it, I can say without doubt that this is the exact same transfer to disc of the original DVD, complete with soundtrack foibles and all.

For example, in chapter five there's a scene where Ennis is setting up the camp tent and Jack is laying on his back playing his harmonica. Over the dialogue there's an annoying reverb that I expected would have been repaired or replaced on this version, but disappointingly wasn't.

Of the seven DVD extras, four of them already came with the previously presented original 2006 release.

They are:

Of the above, the most work seems to have gone into Sharing the Story, which was actually a TV special produced by the LOGO cable network. It appears to have been tacked onto the original disc in place of Focus Features/Universal Studios going to the expense of producing a better one of their own and is resubmitted here.

In my opinion the three new featurettes for this collection are not worth rationalizing the use of an additional disc. In fact one of the new extras is included on the main movie disc. Had it been conveniently grouped with all the others on the second disc, it would have allowed room for an extended version of the movie. This is what people hope for when a movie expands to two discs — but not here.

Make sure you check the packaging before you whip out your charge card and make sure you're getting the more expensive HD/DVD - DVD combo. If not, basically your second DVD purchase would essentially buy the same original 2006 release that you already own with only the following features tacked on:

A Groundbreaking Success: How do you combat a beautiful heart-touching love story being instantly labeled “The Gay Cowboy Movie?” This subject deserved at least half an hour or more; it absolutely deserved more than a mere seventeen minutes.

It consists of mostly interviews with gay film critics who cannot stop referring to “queer filmmakers”, political and social analysts, and is sprinkled with very few old and new brief snippets of interviews with the cast and director. A fleeting glimpse is given of how the movie trailer for the film gained a life of its own with spoofs of other films' trailers, such as Brokeback to the Future and Top Gun. The producers noted that these parodies were good natured and accepting, which they were.

What isn’t included but should have been was an examination of the real world controversy and opposition that this movie generated, if for no other reason than to add contrast to an otherwise self-praising featurette. I wanted to see and hear about the theaters that had agreed to show the film and then pulled out at the last moment because of the religious right’s opposition.

Missing also was how most of us felt cheated that the early advertising concerned itself with the heterosexual relationships involved in the storyline instead of the one between Jack and Ennis. I’m sure many early straight theatergoers thought they’d been “bait and switched” an hour into the film. Also blatantly missing was Heath and Jake winning the MTV best kiss award. I also would have liked to have seen and laughed at Lance Armstrong again while kidding his good friend Jake at the ESPY awards "preferring it in the rear... of the theater!"

What is infuriatingly, inexplicably, and inexcusably missing is an interview with Annie Proulx, the creator of the story.

Impressions From The Film is a very scant two and a half minute slide show set to music from the film. This is similar to a feature that could be found on Brokeback Mountain’s website, the difference being that the images here literally blink by at breakneck speed, are grouped together by scene but then are presented inexplicably out of order, so skip this one.

Music From The Mountain is the one saving grace and is more or less a tribute to Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla’s wonderful work on the film. It astonishingly reveals that the magnificent musical score was written before the movie was even shot. Ang Lee had the score playing on CD or running through his head during the filming and scenes were shot to fit Gustavo's beautiful music! It also covers the quest to find just the right vocal performers like Willie Nelson and others to showcase this movie’s score. To actually watch Willie sing, “He Was A Friend Of Mine” in the studio brought me to tears.

This featurette is very enjoyable to watch, however it is over just as you are getting into and enjoying it. At only a little over eleven minutes long, it seems disappointingly short.

The package also comes with eight postcards. These are beautifully printed and big. Any collector would cherish them, particularly the facsimile of Jack’s note to Ennis. The problem is that that note was on a general delivery card and was only half as big as the one that’s presented. No matter. Just don’t tack them up on the wall if you're thinking of keeping them as collectibles.

The film has more enhanced soundtrack options, and is also now dubbed in Spanish.

Having said that…

I’ll repeat from another review I’ve done that if you’ve already seen the film or DVD, watch the extras first. They’ll give you a clearer understanding of the story and the work that went into presenting it. If you’ve never seen the film or DVD, watch the movie first then check out the DVD extras.

As for the movie itself, watching it again only confirms my original assessment of what a great work it is. It also reinforces my firm conviction that both Brokeback Mountain and Heath Ledger were blatantly robbed out of political correctness, or just plain homophobic internal politics at the Academy Awards.

I hadn’t seen any of Heath Ledger’s films before Brokeback Mountain so I had nothing to compare his performance to. Now that I have, I can appreciate what a master performance he gave in this film. To observe a previously merely serviceable actor so completely become his character was a joy to watch. Nor is his work here truly appreciated unless you take the time first to compare it to what came before.

I think Annie Proulx should be compelled to write a sequel detailing what happened to Ennis after that cabinet door closed. It was unfair to leave us wondering. I was so frustrated, I even wrote my own imagined ending to his story on my fan page. There aren’t many movies that leave a viewer feeling that way, but this is one of them. The only others worth trusting with such a project would be screenwriters Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry.

To sum things up:

My imagined and hoped for DVD release would have/should have contained the following:

A two and a half hour or longer version with the missing footage edited back into the feature maintaining the film’s continuity.

The early outtakes of Heath Ledger nearly breaking Jake Gyllenhaal’s nose while attempting that award winning and passionate kiss at the foot of the stairs. I wanted to laugh at their frustration at not being able to get the damned bear to roar on cue. I wanted to see both Jake and Ang Lee on the mechanical bull trying to learn how to ride a real one.

I wanted to see what was missing from the second love scene in the tent that was obviously and drastically edited down and way too short. As in straight movies the heterosexual lovers get undressed and almost nothing is left to the imagination. I’m not talking about showing porn here, I’m talking realism, which I’m sure was experimented with, but discarded because of threats of how the film might be rated.

At least a minimum of thirty minutes of flubbed lined outtakes as a DVD extra showing how much the cast enjoyed the filming.

Missing scene: In the movie trailer there’s a shot of Jack standing on the log bridge shirtless looking down into the stream; this scene was cut from the film.

Missing scene: At the campfire when Jack and Ennis get away to the mountain for the first time in four years, there’s a shot of them (see above) sitting next to each other laughing, which isn’t included in the film. At the opening of the "If you can't fix it Jack, you gotta stand it" scene, Ennis is still joking about Jack forgetting his harmonica. When Ennis joins him on the log he doesn't smile. I believe this missing piece is a prelude to the gut wrenching dialogue that followed and deserves to be edited back in.

I’d include an interview with Annie Proulx about how she wrote the story, her reaction to the movie and how she wasn’t included in the production of it.

Missing scene: In the movie trailer there’s a mysterious man with a concerned look on his face and a teenaged boy standing behind him in front of a cluttered garage, neither of whom are seen nor mentioned in the movie.

Missing scene: In the movie trailer there’s the line, “Well, since we’re going to be working together, I reckon it’s time we started drinking together.” It must have been filmed and should be cut back into the movie.

If that’s what you — no, what we were all hoping for, you won’t find it here. I can only hope that the powers that be at Focus Features read this and create a “director’s cut” just for us based on the above wish list.

And that’s why I’m disappointed.

Not in the film, which is one of the greatest I’ve ever seen, but at the bean counters at Universal that figured we’d buy anything they offered disregarding our hopes.

But of course this is only my opinion.

Lynne, thanks for posting that.  I don't think I'll see a more detailed commentary anywhere.

Surprisingly, what the author didn't include on their wish list is something I'd most like to see:  the movie presented with voiceover commentary by any or all of the following: Ang Lee, the screenwriters, the actors, Prieto, Santaolalla, and the designers.  :(

This line in particular leapt out at me:

"As for the movie itself, watching it again only confirms my original assessment of what a great work it is. It also reinforces my firm conviction that both Brokeback Mountain and Heath Ledger were blatantly robbed out of political correctness, or just plain homophobic internal politics at the Academy Awards."

This is a reviewer after my own heart.

Thanks for that, Lynne.  I still ordered the derned thing, but I did at least make sure I got the HD/DVD-DVD combo as was suggested.

I had this theory that $$$ might have been a factor contributing to director's commentary for Sense and Sensibility vs no director's commentary for Brokeback Mountain, but I don't think it pans out:

According to IMDb the budgets were Sense and Sensibility was 16.5M vs BBM 14M.  Is 2.5M sufficient in movieland to account for the lapse?

I'm very disappointed in the bonus material on the discs.  I still feel like this film deserves better.
I agree, i can't believe the shoddy treatment this movie has gotten for its DVD releases. C-grade direct-to-DVD actioners get better treatment with one or more commentaries.    I think Randy Quaid's lawsuit was a clue that all was not right with this project.  I'd love to know the story behind it all.

Now all I can hope is for BbM to get the Criterion treatment.  Now that would be sweet!

I will definately buy it , mainly for Ang lee`s commentry , i agree though deleted scenes are what everyone wants , and a joint commentry with Jake and Heath would of been great , i love watching a movie , then watching again with the commentry , it gives the film a whole new look , understanding , about how certain shots were acheived , weather conditions etc , it gives you something new to look for.  I would like the HD version as i have just got a HD TV and DVD , and even my old DVD`s are playing great on it so i think , i will notice the difference.
I think it`s down to how much you adore the movie , i would pay extra just for a little bit more , i have notice blue ray and HDDVD now in the UK but not on many titles , they are selling in the shops for £24.99 , i would pay that for BBM. xx

Lynne, thanks for posting the full text of that review. While I think the author is sometimes off the mark--sometimes way off, as in, "Annie Proulx should be forced to write a sequel," which I think, at this point, would be most unwise of her--it was an interesting commentary and a useful read.

I think it'd be unwise of her to do it at any point. BBM is a perfectly formed thing in itself - what more is there to add that isn't already there?

I read on another board tha!t some of the scenes in the new edition are slighty differnent and longer.  Could that possibly be true?

I also finally just bought a dvd player so I could watch it on dvd, but the light on the picture fades in and out.

It happens on all dvd's I tried.  The saleman had no idea why.  Could it be that my tv is too oldd?

Could somes scenes really be slightly different?  Wouldn't that be wonderful if true!!

Thanks for finding us that commentary, Lynne.  I wonder what fan website the writer of it runs?

I disagree strongly with "the deleted scenes should have put back into the movie and made it longer."  That sounds like blasphemy to me.  My understanding is that Ang's movie is the way Ang wants it.  BUT I sure would have liked to have seen every one of those deleted scenes as stand-alones.  I sure would love to see the Gustavo featurette.  But as Meryl said, my big, deep yearning is for commentaries.

I got to see Marit Allen (BBM costume designer) interviewed on a featurette that came with the crappy, crappy, crappy All the King's Men.  I would have loved to have seen her talk that much about the costuming in BBM.

Try connecting the DVD player directly to your TV instead of going through a VCR, or other intermediary.  The fading in and out is the copy protection crap they have on DVDs so you can't copy it on your recorder.  Hope this helps ;)

I'm with you, Clarissa. "Director's cut" may be the common term for special edition DVDs of other films, with deleted scenes put in, but I've understood for months on months that in the case of Ang Lee and Brokeback Mountain, what we saw on the theater screen is "the director's cut," no ifs, ands, or buts about it.

But just like you, I would have liked to have seen the "extra" material as stand-alones.

Thanks for posting the commentary Lynne  :D.

I'm with Jeff and Clarissa that I wouldn't want the deleted scenes inserted back into the movie for the reasons they mentioned: what we see is the directors cut.
I also agree that his wish for Annie Proulx to write a sequel is way off. Jesus, no. But I don't think Mrs. Proulx would ever even consider this.

I think he's wrong here. The shot he's talking about is not from the reunion camping trip, but from the scene on Brokeback when Ennis comes back to camp late because he encountered the bear. Can't find the pic now, but it's in the STS book and I've seen it posted here on BM too.

The only thing I'd like to have from this collecteror's edition are the postcards...  :D

David, Chrissi,

The postcards are nice, glossy, about 4x6 inches, heavy stock, mostly scenes we've all seen before.

There is one nice facsimile of the "coming thru on the 24th" postcard, front and back.

Is this worth $20 to you?

I think so, too--thought so when I read the commentary. And if it's the still shot I'm thinking of, I'm even thinking it might just have been a publicity photo taken when they filmed the "post-bear" scene. In the photo I'm thinking of, Jake/Jack and Ennis/Heath are laughing and smiling in such a way that just doesn't seem to me to fit with the rest of that scene--like maybe they started joking around after the scene was filmed, or something, and the publicity folks took a picture.

Still, it's a nice photo, and pleasant to think of it as a scene of Ennis and Jack actually having a good time together. Lord knows, we see little enough of that.  :-\

Yeah, I had the same thoughts. It looks like Jake and Heath joking around, not Jack and Ennis. It's really a cute picture (and I can't find it right now, wanted to insert it here  :-\).

Directors cut vs. collectors edition.

True.  A directors cut IS the shortened version we see in the theaters.

Too bad all movies are not released on DVD as a collectors edition with two versions of the movie.   The theater version plus a second version with the deleted scenes put back in place for the full effect.   I hate watching deleted scenes in snippets.

The restored version of It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World is far better to watch restored to its full length.    They didn't put the additional scenes on a bonus disc.

Don't you think, though, David, that this is a kind of "movie-specific" thing that almost "should be decided on a movie-by-movie basis"?

I take your point about watching deleted scenes in snippets, but don't you think that what might work, or at least be OK, for a comedy like It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World might be wrong--possibly even disastrous--for a tragic drama like Brokeback Mountain?

I'd love to see "the hippie scene." I'd love to see more footage of Ennis and Jack having fun being together. But I've thought about this a lot and finally decided, for myself, and almost reluctantly, that adding back "the hippie scene" would probably do a serious disservice to the movie Ang Lee crafted--throw off the rhythm and pacing, alter the tone or jar with the tone of the rest of the movie, that sort of thing.

Deleted scenes can be good in movies that were lacking something to begin with. But when I love a movie, I love it as much for the way it flows as for any particular scene. So for BBM... no, I don't want to see the deleted scenes spliced back in. I would like to see them as separate features, but I wouldn't buy a collector's edition with them spliced in.

Everybit of original 'extras' have been expanded.   Watching them side by side shows how they 'edited them down" for the first release.  The postcards are beautiful and I will show you them.  The only thing that I am disappointed is the lack of a commentary track of some sorts.  It's audio options now include DTS 5.1.  I am not sorry that I pre-ordered it in December - and then have to remind Universal that I DID but when I received it yesterday, it was a pleasant surprise.  I gave my old WS BBM to my therapist, who has seen it four times, the last time with subtitles.   On the back of the package (BTW, this package was the EASIEST DVD I have ever seen to open.  Nothing but an easily removable plastic wrap.   One usually has to put up with digging into the cover to remove the title 'sticker')  is the insert. Those who wish to wait will be pleased too when the bargain bin copies appear.   $To me, well worth the 19.93  I am shrinking the files slightly so they will fit most screens.  I am also compressing it more to make it smaller.   If anyone wants a full size, less compressed .jpg, PM me.

peace :)

Let me start my exposition with the removable "Back Cover"...

Cool Br. Patrick

Keep posting, you might make me go out and get my own copy of the new disc.
I already have the widescreen - and the full screen - and the audio reading - and the soundtrack - and the story to screenplay book - and the Close Range collection.
We can't stop now.

Ang remains silent. :-X
I've lost respect for Ang Lee for not doing a commentary, I mean he did one for Hulk.  Also for producer James Shamus and Focus films.  After all their talk of how much the film meant to them and blah blah blah,  and then they throw us a bare-bones DVD.

The films Jarhead and V for Vendetta were released in both single and double disc sets, at the same time!  All with at least one commentary.  Even the lower budget A History of Violence has a great director commentary and deleted scenes also  with commentaries. That tells me that the film makers were proud of their creation and had a certain amount of respect for the fans and potential buyers.  BbM didn't even have an insert with chapter listings.

So no, I won't be buying the so-called Collectors Edition, lol!  (which is now available everywhere in Toronto, btw).

Does anyone have any insight into the industry in terms of who has ultimate control over these decisions?  I refuse to believe Ang Lee would be opposed to providing a commentary - I see him as a brilliant, committed filmmaker; he's working tirelessly to promote filmmaking in his native Taiwan.  I cannot believe the decision was entirely his own.

Thanks so much for posting these, Patrick.  The 'Dozy Embrace' and the 'I'm not queer.  Me Neither' are the black and white prints I'm having framed soon.

Budget? What budget?   ::)  I haven't had a budget since 10/2005!   :-\ :D

Thanks so much for posting these, Patrick.

You're welcome!  But I thought Universal had slapped a lawsuit on Bettermost for showing the postcards because my original topic was erased.  I agree they belong in this thread.   Just scared me until I found them!  I replaced "Dozy Embrace" & "Crying Jack" with with ones with better color.  As I learn more tricks with my scanner I may re-post other postcards.  The postcards Look Good.  They deserve the best scans!  There is no chapter list in this release either!  Time to make a new one, I guess.

peace :)

Too bad all movies are not released on DVD as a collectors edition with two versions of the movie.   The theater version plus a second version with the deleted scenes put back in place for the full effect.   I hate watching deleted scenes in snippets.

I haven't been following this discussion, so perhaps this has already been mentioned. But in case it hasn't, here's my take on the situation:  I suspect BBM is getting "iconic" status treatment. On the Criterion DVD of Fellini's 8-1/2, there is a lot of talk in the commentary (done by film historians, friends of Fellini, etc.) about excess footage, but none is shown. I would think some must still exist somewhere. But the idea of showing excess footage from one of the best films of all time almost sounds sacreligious. This is a film that has been written about extensively by film historians, and one that has made all-time top ten lists frequently. (It's my favorite film, by the way.) When I watched the extras I was almost disappointed--some of the power of the movie is gone for me now, knowing how certain effects/scenes were done. E.g., the harem fantasy scene--I learned that Fellini waved scarves in front of the camera. I'd seen the movie 30 or 40 times and never really noticed the scarves specifically--I always just saw the total chaos. Now that I know how some of it was achieved that scene doesn't have quite the same magic for me it did previously.

I'm not sure I want to see a longer version of BBM, or material that was cut. I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting, it's just that it might take away some of the power of the original.

I do not believe Ang Lee has anything to say about what is in or out of the dvd---he made the movie, now it is in the hands of the production company and backing company----James Shamus stated VERY early, around
Toronto film fest time,  before the first dvd ever came out that there would never be any release of deleted scenes from the movie on any dvd.   So I think if you are going to blame someone---you have to blame the producers--not the director.

This is interesting, Ranchgal. Did he explain why?   ???

No, I remember hearing him say it during one of the interview clips that were running then, when he was on a BBM panel with Ang and several of the cast members.   I don't think it was ever expanded or pursued after he said it. Maybe they ran out of time, or maybe no one else asked any more about it.   I haven't gone through most of the stuff I have from back then lately, so I am not sure which festival it came up at.

I'm sure you're right and my anger is misplaced.  I was aware that there wouldn't be any deleted scenes and I'm fine with that.  My big complaint is the lack of a director or other commentary.  I even wouldn't mind a producer and/or screenwriter and/or actor commentary.  Just throw us a bone for god's sake!

What I don't understand is that Schamus, as one of the producers, doesn't seem to have much say in the dvd's content either.  In the last interview I read with him he was obviously distancing himself from the Collector's Edition, saying things like "they" wanted to include this or that etc, not taking ownership at all.

I wish someone familiar with how these things work would enlighten us so that I'd know who to hold responsible for this blatant double-dip travesty, lol!
