Thanks, David!  I hope you have a nice holiday weekend, too.   :)

Sure enough is quiet around here with the BBQers offline, eh?  :P

It sure is! It's kind of scary! But everything will be back to normal again next week. I hope they're all having fun out there in Colorado!  :)

We are!  :)

Right now, I'm in my bottom bunk, with Amanda asleep above me.  Roux is across the room in the other bottom bunk.  Our fourth roomie, Lynne, has had an awful time travelling, and still hasn't arrived.

We're thinking of you all, and remembering you, as we ought, on Memorial Day weekend.  :)

Happy Memorial Day, other holiday, or simply a wonderful almost-summer day!

So, does anyone have plans for the holiday weekend?

As I posted in my blog, my uncle Ray is the Grand Marshal of the parade this year in Caldwell, so we're going there to see the parade.

Wow, this thread has been around for a while! I have the privilege of taking care of EDelMar's cat Olive over the holiday weekend. That's in addition to my regular charges and a bunch of newly planted flowers!

I'm taking a vacation day on Friday, giving myself a four-day weekend. Friday afternoon I'm going to my dad's because I haven't seen him since Easter. (  :o  ) I'm planning to return home Sunday afternoon. Monday I won't exactly be having a picnic, but I do plan on having a meal of hotdogs, baked beans, and either potato salad or macaroni salad, I haven't yet decided which. Probably there will be ice cream for dessert.  ;D

I am going to work, and then work, and when I am done with that I'm going to work.

I'm hoping to leave work early on Friday, and I also took Tuesday and Wednesday off, so I'll have a 5 day weekend.

What are y'all remembering?

Hello Sonja.

Here in the US, Memorial Day is mainly (and supposed to be) about remembering members of the Armed Forces who lost their lives while in service.   There will most likely be numerous TV shows and movies that have war themes getting rerun.

Also, most towns have a parade.

I'm sure you'll see many posts on FB from your US friends about Memorial Day.

However, it's also 'morphed' into weekend that is referred to as the "unofficial" start of summer, and many people host BBQs, or drive to the coast, to make their first trips to the beaches and boardwalks.

When I was in elementary school, a local veterans' organization, I forget which one, used to give us artificial poppies for Memorial Day. (We got little flag pins for Flag Day, June 14.)

Oh yeah, I remember those little red plastic poppies.

My red poppies are actually blooming now! How considerate of them! I don't have many plans this year. Family is all scattered to the winds. Son is in Hawaii on his honeymoon, daughter is preoccupied with a week-old baby, ex-husband is in Boulder with his new girlfriend. So it's just me, my cat, and the chickens. I'm happy with that! I'll probably drop by to see friends I've been neglecting.

I'm supposed to be going to a BBQ on Friday afternoon, but the weather this whole weekend is spotty at best.  We'll see if it goes on as planned.

I hope it does, I volunteered to bring an antiposto salad, and I got everything I need for it on Friday.

Is anyone celebrating or observing Memorial Day? It seems to be shaping up for me as a somber day. I feel the loss of several people famous to many or only to me and my circle. I'm actually on my way to the mountains for a memorial service today. A young man in my  horticultural society drowned in a white water rafting accident. The rivers are very full and violent and he shouldn't have been doing that. Also, I've been dreaming about my parents and other ancestors.

Two-year-old post, but this morning I was reminded of:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row.

--John McCrae, 1915.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Flanders_Fields (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_Flanders_Fields)

(The Wikipedia article shows a handwritten copy with the first line ending in "grow," which kind of makes more sense to me. There is discussion of this in the section on the poem's publication.)

I'm sorry to hear that, FRiend.  :-\

I'll spend Memorial Day itself at a park on a lake with my friends I've had since high school. It's a tradition -- we gather there every Memorial Day and Labor Day. This year will be even more festive; we're organizing a big weekend in August to celebrate our 50 years of friendship. Not counting spouses and a few who joined us in the following few years, we all became friends in the summer of 1973.

We're planning pretty elaborate festivities: a Friday night party just for our core group and a larger Saturday night party that will include other people we know. Also a boat ride and a tour of the little town we grew up in (it's a Minneapolis suburb, but it's also a cute small town with a big park and main street buildings from the 19th century).

I'll be seeing family on Sunday afternoon, the over to friends for a firepit evening, and a BBQ on Monday.

We had our "Memorial Day Picnic" for supper last night (Saturday): Hot dogs, baked beans, macaroni salad.
