         I dont know what it is, but i made my guess...a glass blowers tool.          duh,,,i feel so stupid on this one...

I also voted for glass blowers tool. I seem to recall seeing something very like this in a documentary on glass blowing recently. The wide pincers at right molded the molten glass and the clippers at left cut off the excess, unwanted glob of molten glass. That's my guess.  :-\  :)

You know what? I just looked at that picture again, and it looks like something they would use to pull teeth. But it's too big for that, isn't it? I think it's a surgical tool.

I guessed cow tail holder even though I couldn't think of a reason a cow's tail would need holding.....I don't know. :-\

A Cow Tail Holder(http://bestsmileys.com/farmer/1.gif)

I didn’t even know that there was a need for such a product, but apparently when milking cows, serious eye injury can occur from the switching of the cow tail. The device below is a cow tail holder, when in use the larger end clamps to the leg and the other end attaches to the tail. Sorry I could not find a photo of the device in use but the explanation is pretty clear I think.

It was patented in 1891, number 444,428, over 100 other patents for a wide range of contraptions that perform the same task can be found on Google patents.   The inventor of a cow tail holder estimated that between 15,000 and 20,000 milkmaids or milkmen received severe eye injuries each year.

Yay! I got that one right---I'm not too sure about the other one---the June 10th one.

Well, dottie, your explanation is perfect. I can visualize from it. (So no demonstation required, David.)   ;)

I grew up on a farm and we milked our one cow. Her name was Bossy. She never hit me with her tail, but we kept "stuff" on her that kept flies away, so maybe that's why.

One time she did corner us in a stall when my granny and I went out to see her new baby calf. She was sooooo mad. And I tell you what--bulls are not the only cows who have horns as some city slickers think! Bossy had horns.  We had to yell and wait for my grandfather to come shoo her away before we could get out. LOL
