Title: Brokeback Mountain Craft Corner

Hey there ladies and gents!
Welcome to the exciting new Brokeback Mountain Craft Corner. Each week I'll be posting a new project for you cowboys and cowgals to make. Just download the file to your desktop and format it for your printer. Follow the simple directions and you've created something to treasure forever! Give as gifts to loved ones for display or save it away forever in a closet for yerself!

But remember folks, like love, they ain't no good unless you give it away!


P.S.- I encourage other Martha Stewart types to contribute their craft ideas so, please let me know if you have a project for us and I'll post it here.

Howdy folks,
Here's our first project, the 'BetterMost Beans' can label. I saw this idea at the Colorado BetterMost B-B-Q and it gave me the spark to create my own label for my collection of Brokeback junk! Now you can all have a can of genuine, swimming in tomato sauce, flatuence producin', Ennis loves 'em, BetterMost Beans! Just like Jack used to make!

Just download the jpeg to your desktop and resize it to fit on a 15 oz. can of beans.
The label size should be approximately 4.18" X 10.0". Cut it out then glue or tape to a 15 oz. can. Enjoy!

I had the same problem when I  tried to open the link.  But it worked when I save it to my computer and then opened it.

Dagi,

Mine said the same thing when I tried to open it.

But when I saved it on the hard drive first and then opened it, it worked just fine.

The quality of the print out will not be as good, you realize but it should download better.

I can see both sizes of the label just fine, Oscar, on my Mac.  

I asked f I could take one of those cans of beans home from the BBQ, and it is one of my favorite possessions.  

This is a really great idea.  If you think of it, PM me every time there is a new craft, and I'll put it on the banner for everyone to see.

Adam offered me a BetterMost Beans can at the BBQ but I was too embarrassed to accept. Wanting the BetterMost beans label is what prompted me to create my own. Then I got the idea to share it with the rest of the Brokies and start this thread. I love crafts and this will be a really fun place for crafts and projects. I want to create postcards, a label for 'Old Rose' Whiskey, even bumper stickers that everyone can download and print at home. If anyone bought any of the movie props or has a clear picture of some of them, please let me know and email me personally.

Brokeback Mountain Grease recipe: Take 1 part sheep lanolin and 1 part mash whiskey and mix thoughly.
Spread liberally on any and all parts that lubricatin' for easy glidin'!

he,he I have thot that Front-Ranger was not xactly truth in advertising sometimes!! Or maybe that it was one of those half-baked ideas with the Front part being the unbaked part! Speaking of that, you are half-right, my recipe does contain lanolin. But not whiskey mash, fermented or non! That makes a certain part of my body hurt just to think about it!! No, instead the other ingredients are beeswax and cocoa butter. One thing I like about my recipe, it has no petroleum products.

I'm waiting patiently for that label because, as they pointed out to me in Safe Haven, the whiskey comes BEFORE the lube...

Just thought of something else, I have lots of wool, that can be used to decorate the sheep!!

We don't have a printer, so I have to wait until my husband prints it out at his office. Still haven't got the prints from last week  >:( *grmphf*. But he's excused, he was on a business trip.

I think the paperdolls project sounds like a great one! I'll need some full length shots of Jack and Ennis standing facing forward. I could use everyone's help on this one for sure. Maybe the still of the two of them standing next to the truck would work.

Now Miss SusieBell, wouldn't you happen to have any pictures of the fellas without any clothes would ya?

Well, he ain't exactly a Jack or Ennis paper dolly, but he's good enough. Save the photos to your desktop, print, cut out (careful with the scissors!), and match the triangles to assemble.

Just print the page on an 8.5" X 11.0" page then glue or double stick the page to a thin magnetic sheet (available at craft stores). Then stick Jack to the refrigerator and enjoy putting Jack's clothes on or taking them off!

Well, thank you, Snavel del Snuit! If you don't have a magnetic refrigerator, you can glue the sheet to a piece of lightweight cardboard. Then add tabs to the sides of the accessories, cut them out and dress Jack by folding the tabs over the figure like the old-fashioned paper dolls.

Howdy Cowfolk,
Here is your newest craft project: the "Old Rose" whiskey label.

Print out the page and back with a sheet of self adhesive paper. Then, trim the label to the line and apply to a blank whiskey bottle. Cut out the collar band and apply to the neck of the bottle. Now you've got a bottle of the fella's favorite hootch.

I did it!  ;D  Finally made my very own Jack and Ennis.  We went out to breakfast this morning and I insisted we stop at Michael's on the way home and get the magnetic sheets and the clear plastic sheets to cover the paper.  They look so wonderful on the frig, even my husband is impressed.  Thanks Toycoon  :-*  you're the best!!!

'Spray mount' is spray glue in a can. it's easier to use than spreading white glue on the board.

okay, i spoke with oscar earlier today and he told me about this thread!
i said i'd contribute, so here is a project i did as gifts for a mini-slash bash
last last year in los angeles... click on the sample image for a larger version
to print out (on speckled oatmeal colored paper for best effect), then cut on
the light gray lines and wrap it around a bar of plain ivory soap. a little dab of
glue-stick should work to keep the label affixed... and you're good to go! enjoy!

It was a joy to meet you, foxy RouxB and sweet lil' Lynne yesterday. I hope to get to meet all of our SoCal Brokies at some point. Where are you guys? I promise I won't bite (too hard). Heehee!

Maybe you can adapt some of your ceramic plaques into refriderator magnets to the Craft Corner. If RouxB doesn't post her Brokeback lamp shade project, I'll create one for everybody. The way she described it, it's sounds really cool!

^^^  hi, glad you liked the addition, toycoon! hmm, i'm not sure how my ceramics would adapt, i'd have to make some fresh, or words would get cropped. yes, the lampshade idea is superb, as well as a "moving" landscape with a river scene.. or the skinny dipping shot.. can you imagine that scene with the water glittering?

• other ideas i have in store are "religious" candles, but they're not BBM themed, they're more heath/jake fan oriented

• we talked about using printing cloth or iron-transfer paper to make bbm cloth for quilts and/or quilted pillows

• there's also a great craft project in here somewhere: how to make a "carved horse" out of basswood.

• bbm cross stitch? i could see the traditional "home sweet home" theme turned into a piece that ways, "it could be like this, just like this always."  ^_^

BBM envelopes?

I know people would not want to use their BBM calendars but you could use other expired calenders or print out BBM pictures (which kind of kills the recycling part but at least they would be unique) and make envelopes.

This is from the Craftster crafting site. I made some using my old Humane Society calender. These are addictive. I actually taped mine with invisible tape and that works pretty good too.

I've been working on knash's original suggestion, using the "It could be like this..." scene, but have run into a couple of technical problems, which are not insoluable, but which need some thought. The easy one first: there's a lot of background and (except for the fire) it's very dark. My thought here is to
A) round off the corners, so it's an oval rather than a rectangle, plus
B) use half cross stitch for most of the background [technical explanation below] which will lighten it, plus
C) skip stitches out toward the edges to sort of feather the scene into the fabric.

Technical explanation: Normal cross stitch is two stitches, one over the other, like an X. If you only use one stitch, like a slash /, that's half cross stitch.

I blocked out the motto, and inserted the picture (from Striped Wall, and slightly lightened), and overlaid a grid. Thusly:

...Which brings me to the second problem: scale. This design is about 8x10, with 14 stitches to the inch. And Jack's face only comprises about 26 stitches, which is not enough for any expression, or even enough to make him recognizable. So I tried changing the project's orientation from landscape to portrait (which takes away from the "Home Sweet Home" look), and came up with this:

...which is a little better, but still not enough for much detail on the faces, as you can see by this sample which shows how much detail you get using one color for each block:

That can be sharpened up a bit with the judicious use of backstitching--but not sharpened up a lot.

So. possible solutions to this problem:
1. Make it bigger, say 14x20. (downside: will take much longer to do, both charting and stitching)
2. Use smaller stitches, say 18 or even 22 to the inch. (downside: same as above)
3. Combination of 1 & 2: somewhat bigger and somewhat smaller stitches. (downside: same as 1 & 2 above)
4. Just ignore it--we all recognize the scene, and the message will be the same to viewers, even if they can't recognize jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. (downside: We'd miss those great expressions.)
5. Use a different picture--a close-up with their heads closer together. But which one? (downside: we want the screencap that goes with the motto.)
6. ?? suggestions ??

wow, sid, i don't know a thing about crossstitch but that looks cool! i was just thinking of the words, with a simple can of beans or something (line drawing)..!

i like the one in the middle, and it seems you can still make it an oval and feather the edge of the image. i am not sure how much you have to worry about detail, but you could use a close up image, say, of the dozy embrace, or the SNIT kiss or something?

i always wanted to do a BBM quilt, and made this "dozy" on my computer to see how it might look, by simplifiing the colors into squares... this, as a queen size quilt, would rock my sleep-world!! ^_^ it wouldn't be recognizable on a bed tho, you'd have to stand far away. i walked 10 feet from my monitor just now to get an idea..

of course, i would never even attempt to do such a thing! :D  i've quilted before, but just pattern with color, not making images.

Hello my beautiful friends,
This week been extremely difficult me; I'm not usually affected by things like this so it isn't something I have any frame of reference for. I am trying desperately to get back into the swing of things then I got an idea for a Bettermost Craft project for everyone to make.

It is a paper wrapper for a votive candle to devote to our dear departed, Heath Ledger. All you have to do is print out it so the image is 8.5" wide and 7.0" tall, cut it out. Rub a glue stick along the dotted line, wrap it around a tall votive candle and press the edges together.

They help many persons... and I. One I remember had a cat which you could brush; think that was cross stitching?

Hi clyde! Can you see it when you click on that link? When I try it, all I see is a square with a red X.

Yes, it opens in a separate window.

The separate window opens for me too, but then all I see is the square with the red X.  ???

Try this one Monika, I was using Safari, but my Netscape browser couldn't open it.  I don't know which browser you use, but this one works with the three I use.
