Title: What are your plans for the Fourth of July??
Post by: David In Indy on July 03, 2007, 03:59:53 pm
I'm having some friends over tomorrow for a barbeque and then we're going to my friend's house in Woodruff Place. Their neighborhood is located very close to downtown, and we'll sit up on the roof and watch the fireworks from downtown Indianapolis. My boyfriend is from England and he's never been here for the Fourth of July before. He's looking foward to it.  :D

What do you plan on doing tomorrow?  :)

Well! I must say this is very disappointing!

Either all of you are doing NOTHING on the Fourth of July, or you just don't want to tell me about it.

Now I know the first part isn't true, so this makes me wonder about the second part.  ???

Is it illegal? Or is it just too embarrassing to mention on the Internet??

Come on! I told you what I'm doing! Now it's your turn.  :D

Sounds like a fun day, David! We aren't going to have our usual family BBQ this year,  but hope it resumes next year.

Well.......I think I am going to fix my lawn mower and mow my backyard.

Then maybe my cousin and I will take her little boy to a movie and out to eat. Last---if the mosquitoes (our state bird) are not too bad--I will shoot off some fireworks for him out in the country!

And I'm hopin' we have have a Fourth of July 1000th resident to welcome!!

What state do you live in Shasta? I remember camping up in Minnesota a few times. The mosquitoes were really bad up there; ALMOST as bad as they are here!  :D

OH YEAH.

We got Minnesota and Indiana beat.

I live in

Arkansas:

the Natural State---more like the natural habitat for mosquitoes!!!

(Actually I have never been in MN or IN, so I don't know if we have more. It just FEELS like they are ALL here!!!  LOL.  I guess you will wear eau de OFF for the fireworks tomorrow nite, huh?)  :P

Yup!  :D

Oh YEAH!! We're bringing Cody with us too. I don't want to leave him alone at the house when the neighborhood kids are shooting off their firecrackers. But Cody has his own mosquito medicine. But Alex, Cory and me will be drenching ourselves in OFF before we watch the fireworks.

I've been through Arkansas, but I haven't really spent much time there. I've spent a lot of time in Lousiana though, just down the road from you. The mosquitoes are very BAD there, so I would imagine Arkansas is probably the same. My mother's side of the family lives in New Orleans, and I've been down there dozens of times.  :D

Are ya gonna have earplugs for Cody? You may have taken him before and he's fine. But I took my Yorkie a couple of years ago to watch fireworks over the lake at Heber Springs, AR---very pretty over the lake, by the way. She's always laid back---kinda like "whatever", but she went berserk when the fireworks started. I had to put her under my t-shirt and hold her ears. I guess it was the noise, even tho she doesn't react at all when we hear them inside the house. So you might want to take earplugs if he's never been before.  Cody probably won't fit under your shirt.  ;)

Good luck repelling the mosquitoes!!  :P

Oh yeah---New Orleans. Swamps. Lake Ponchartrain. I bet they are as bad or worse there! That's  close to where my ex-husband lives---with his new wife--Slidell.

We'll keep Cody in the house while we're up on the roof. The fireworks are out in the distance, about 3 or 4 miles away. But we will have an excellent view of them from the top of the house. He will be happier with us than he would be alone at my house with all the firecrackers shooting off outside on the street.  :D

We're invited to a friend's backyard potluck for lunch, and a four year old's birthday party after that.  And then to see the fireworks in the evening.  But the thing I'm most excited about is our plan for the morning, of rearranging some of our furniture between two rooms.  It's an idea I've had for a month or so, and we finally have a plan to implement the plan.  :)

I watched and listened to the Declaration of Independence today:

We have a race around the neighborhood. I was planning to be in it but had to bow out because my feet are too sore from hiking this past weekend. I will only have to wear red and white today...my blue toes will complete the color scheme!! Then I am putting up a display of wildflowers at the neighborhood clubhouse where we have a BBQ, a dj and the works. After that I will probably head to town and spend the afternoon with Brokie friends and maybe go to see Ratatouille. Winding up the evening with fireworks watching, of course!!

It's been an uneventful day, mostly stayed indoors due to the heat.  Fireworks are illegal here but of course people shoot them off anyway.    I have firecrackers!    8)    And I know how to make a pretty cool homemade can rocket with them.

That sounds heavenly, Lee! I hope all ya'll Brokies had a good time today. How did Cody do, David? My dogs were calm when I got home and they had not torn up anything, so I told them I was proud of them. Someone did bring in a huge partially mummified FROG!! It was just sitting there--he looked like he was in mid-swim--at first I thought it was alive!! (http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/frog.gif)   So I had to rid that from the kitchen---that was a shocker.  :P

I went from NO plans to tentative plans to changed plans. Some friends from Memphis (about an hour away) called for me to come to a cookout. We ate, shot fireworks, played cards, and watched a movie. It was a nice evening. I rubbed myself with Bounce to keep the mosquitoes away!!

I spent most of the day sleeping.  The other half of the day I drove my daughter around to spend some time with friends.  We didn't cook, but ate takeout from KFC.  Oh, it is not as bad as it sounds   I was able to catch up on some much needed rest, and watch the Twilight Zone marathon on the Sci Fi channel.  I didn't see the professional fireworks, as Oakland's firework display has been cancelled because of the bad behavior of the locals.  The As game was the only place to see a professional fireworks display in Oakland.  The neighborhoods were alive with fireworks, though.

I plan to spend tomorrow sleeping in and lounging around a lot.  So, "spend the day quietly at home" sounds about right for my plans this year.  But, I'm really looking forward to it.

Happy Fourth of July everyone!! I'm planting some groundcovers today and then off to buy a ladder and a new "flapper" for my toilet! I hope to have enough energy to stay awake for the fireworks tonight! How are you spending the day/holiday? Would love to hear from global Brokies too!

I have my first load of laundry in the dryer even as I type this.  :-\

I need to do some cleaning of the bathroom and kitchen, but I'm procrastinating.  :-\

I want to watch a few old Westerns on DVD.

This evening I will grill a chicken breast for dinner, and for "sides" I have potato salad and baked lima beans. Dessert will be ice cream.  :)

This evening, Turner Classic Movies is showing Yankee Doodle Dandy, from 1942, starring Jimmy Cagney as George M. Cohan. I enjoy that movie because we get to see Cagney as a song-and-dance man, which is how he got his start in show business, before he got into playing gangsters and tough guys. The movie also has lots of fine old songs from the early 20th century that were written by Cohan, such as "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "Give My Regards to Broadway." Songs like that have long been out of fashion, but they're still good songs. I look forward to watching this movie every Independence Day holiday period.  :)

And what is Independence Day without "The Stars and Stripes Forever"?

I decided that while I was giving my bathroom and kitchen "a lick and a promise," I would play a CD of John Philip Sousa marches.  ;D

It always amuses me that on this particular CD, the marches are played by the band of the Queen's Grenadier Guards. No hard feelings, I guess.  ;D

Note to Monty Python fans: This collection includes "The Liberty Bell March." I always found it ... quirky ... that a British comedy team would use "The Liberty Bell March" as the theme for its television show.

Funny you should mention it, Jeff, coz only the other day did I find out that the Monty Python theme music actually had a name and was a piece of music in it's own right!

I saw it on a Youtube vid, but don't remember which one and what the context was.

I probably would have forgotten all about it again, hadn't you mentioned it  ::)

Whew!  I'm tired, but it was  a great day!

Sophia was in NYC for her first Independence Day here. I met her at 10 for a late breakfast at Niles.  Then we went for a walk on the highline, stopped at a Dunkin Donuts (she never had been there) and then walked back to Times Square for dinner.  I took her to Dallas BBQ.  The night prior we had gone to dinner with Meryl and John, and we all told Sophia that July 4th is a huge BBQ day, so we went there so she could have  a traditional BBQ meal.

Sophia had a foot-long grilled hot dog, a side of baked beans, and some corn on the cob.

Went back to her hotel room so she could charge her phone, and I actually took a nap.

At about 5:30 we walked to FDR Drive and stayed there until 9:30, and then the fireworks started, and then we went home.  It was the first time Sophia or I had seen the NYC fireworks in person.

Sounds wonderful, Chuck! Thanks for the instant replay!

I drove all around my new neighborhood trying to find a good angle where my mom could see the fireworks without getting out of the car. We found a good vantage point but then there was a lull in the fireworks. So then we went back to her home and we could hear, but not see, the fireworks from there. I excused myself and went home, where I found out I had a good view of the climactic fireworks from my very own deck! Looking in one direction, I saw the fireworks display, looking in another, I saw Venus and Jupiter in close friendship, and in yet another, the antics of teenage boys playing with sparklers in the street. Heavenly!

Chuck and Sophia, I'm glad you had such a nice day.  I was wondering where you were for the fireworks.  I happened to be on a rooftop down on 9th Street and we had a nice view of the midtown skyscrapers all lit for the occasion plus the fireworks. New York is the greatest for nights like the Fourth.  I'm glad Sophia has been initiated into the mysteries of donuts, hot dogs and corn on the cob, not to mention beans!  8)

Nice to hear about your days. :)
Chuckie, that was a long day for Sophia and you. Glad to hear she now joined the DD club ;). Yeah, there are things a tourist has to do.

I spend the day sweating. 40°C = 104F is not fun anymore. Still had to run some errands and do some cleaning, but totally ignored my laundry.
In the evening there were two parties: the kids/teenagers of the family had a fun time at my house and we grown-ups celebrated three 50th birthdays with a big party at the biker clubhouse. Lots of fun.
We came home at 2am - and the first to greet us was my youngest! My lil' Oliver totally seized the opportunity since I hadn't given him a bedtime before leaving. ;D

Of course there were no fireworks whatsoever, but I still celebrated in style of the day. I made an Amercia-box  for my BIL. The one who is such a huge fan of the US. Filled with gifts I bought for him on my last two US trips.

Yes, he was one of the three people celebrating their 50th birthday. His actual birthday was already back in January while I was in NYC. He had asked for a newspaper from the exact date and totally happy when he got it now. :)

I'm hoping to have a quiet Fourth. It's a long weekend but today, Saturday, is a workday for me, since I just got back from a vacation on Monday night. (Actually it was a working vacation, but very enjoyable.) Also, I had to take most of yesterday off to babysit as my daughter and her husband wanted to go see the big man come to town for the Conservative Summit. My life is such a farce!! I simply can not do a patriotic/political holiday this year. I'd be glad to spend it by myself, walking over to the park to see the fireworks and munching on some kimchi and BBQ'd Korean pork. Somehow, I don't think that's going to happen.

Sounds good, Chuck. I also do the opposite of what everybody else is doing during the holidays. Yesterday I had all 3 grandchildren over for a sleepover and so I'm taking it easy today. If I manage to do a nap, then maybe I'll walk down to the park for fireworks.

Some more storms are predicted today, but they're saying they should happen between 1:00 - 4:00, and cleared out by the time fireworks go off.

Sigh...another year when I can not bear to celebrate the country I live in. I was thinking about celebrating another country, maybe Sweden, since my grandson Charlie has a Swedish flag I could borrow. But that Independence Day was back in June, and Germany's is not until October. I think I will celebrate Scottish Independence Day on July 1. Yes, I know that Scotland is not truly independent (yet) but it did gain a Parliament of its own on July 1, 1999.

Denver is having some concerts and events at drive-in movie theaters for the holidays. The old abandoned drive-ins are being revived. If there are fireworks, I can see them from my deck.

I have the choice of Hello Fresh meals Shawarma-spiced Chicken with Persian Salad or Szechuan Pork and Green Bean Stir-fry. I can't decide...which one shall I cook?

I'll probably watch out my apartment window for some of the higher fireworks, if they even have them.
