I HATE Bullies

I didn't like them when I was in school and I surely don't like them now. I would guess everyone at some point in their life has encountered a bully.  Not just children, but adults too who think that they can lord it over  and push the rest of us around and bend us to their will just because they are larger, are older, are in a position of preceived authority, have more money..what ever.

People who talk too loud or too much, hearing a popular song over and over and over, Commercials on TV, People who don't act like themselves-you know put on airs and graces, being ripped off, long lines, People who are so opinionated that they cannot see any other point of view and think their morality and culture is everyones morality and culture, the same people when they are judgemental,  teenagers and young people who mumble.

I hate noisy eaters, sniffing of the nose, a tab dripping or a door clapping, watch ticking and so on..

YES! No... YES? Maybe not..

Funny because I'd be a hypocrite too. I do crack my kncukles a lot (arghh..!), but it makes me jump, when others do it..  :-\

Isn't it weird how the strangest things make us crazy.  Cracking knuckles is one,, the worst one however is snoring...I get so as to be downright dangerous when someone snores loudly....I just want to hit them...that is so wrong,, but it makes me totally insane.          :-\ :-\

For some reason I attract heavy sleeping, loud snoring guys. Just about every guy I have been with is both a heavy sleeper and a loud snorer. As hard as I try, I can't wake them up. Both my roommate and my boyfriend rock the house when they sleep. It's terrible. I can actually sit my boyfriend up in bed and not wake him up. And I hate it when they do one of those loud gasping snores. Do you know what I mean? Then they wiggle around a little bit, and the whole snoring process starts all over again. I'll lay there and bend my pillow over my head to block out the noise and I can still hear it. I've had to go downstairs and sleep on the couch because of it. It's awful!  >:(

I know they can't help  it, but GEEZ!!!!  ::)

Are they smokers, David? When my country boyf is visiting Sydney, or when I'm visiting him in the country, I always have a great deal of trouble sleeping because of his deafening snoring. I have been known to insert earplugs, which doesn't exactly make for a romantic ambience!  ::)  But then again, nor does his snoring.  >:(  And as in your situation, he is also a very deep sleeper. And a thrasher, too! It's a wonder I haven't woken up with a black eye on some occasions.  8)  I've copped those bony elbows of his in my face on more than one occasion! He's a smoker and I thought that may have had something to do with his snoring.  :-\  I'm told that I don't snore.  :)

My husband is a snorer.. didnt used to be, but now he is..he doesnt smoke, but he used to..we tried every thing but no avail...so now we have separate rooms...the dog sleeps with him, and i am alone...ok by me
It was either that or go to prison for murder...I would get so dang tired I would want to hit him...I got tired of sleeping on the couch..
I did the ear plugs, and the pillow over my head.. I also turned on the fan,, but eventually it got so loud that even the fan didnt drown it out......yukkkkk

Hi Kerry!  :D

Alex smokes occassionally, but he's not a heavy smoker. He just smokes every now and then. Cory (my roommate) doesn't smoke, and both are extremely heavy sleepers and loud snorers. I've been told I don't snore either Kerry. I am a very light sleeper, and I get up quite often during the night, if I go to bed at all. I only require a few hours of sleep anyway. I've always been like this, even as a little kid, I would get up during the night and go watch TV or something. I got in BIG trouble when mom and dad caught me doing it too! They'd say "GET YOUR ASS BACK IN BED!" But I couldn't help it. It's boring just laying there most of the night. I just don't need much sleep.

I can understand the separate bedroom thing, Janice. If Alex and I were married, it might come down to separate bedrooms for us eventually too. It's weird, because his snoring will keep me awake when he's here, but when he goes back to England I miss his snoring and I stay awake because I can't hear it anymore! Isn't that strange?

We all seem to be different when it comes to sleep and how much we need. My ex, George, was always one to go to bed early. In the 15 years we were together, it was always a contentious point with us. His wife tells me he still insists on going to bed early - sometimes as early as 7pm!  :o  I'm not comfortable going to bed before midnight. Come midnight, however, when my head hits the pillow, I'm out for the count until 6am, when I seem to just wake up automatically, without an alarm clock. George was a very quiet sleeper, unlike country-boy Kevin, who could raise the dead with the din of his snoring!   :-\

Bicyclists who don't follow the rules of the road.  At least STOP at the red light and make sure nothing (cars, pedestrians, etc.) is coming before you wheel on through, you a$$h0le.  If I didn't think I would get hurt as bad or worse than they would, I would clothes-line 'em.

Or bicyclists who insist on riding in the middle of the road and won't move over when cars are approaching from behind. I find  that extremely annoying. They're riding in the middle of the road, going 15 MPH when the speed limit is 40 MPH!

People generally do not ride their bicycles on busy streets here in Indiana, and those who do, do it at their own peril. I always try to wait patiently, perhaps toot my horn gently hoping they will move over. Sometimes they will, sometimes they won't. But they do have the right of way, so we just have hope they will extend a courtesy and move over to the side so we can pass them.  >:(

And ANOTHER thing. . .

People who have to always top you.

You:  "I ate a whole box of Honey Nut Cheerios throughout the day yesterday."
Them:  "I ate two boxes before noon."

You:  "My cousin's baby was born with 11 toes!"
Them:  I had a cousin who was born with 12 toes and four nipples.

You:  "I had an emergency appendectomy."
Them"  "My appendix ruptured, and an alien baby came out when they did surgery on me, and it ate the anesthesiologist."

When you wake up in the morning to find it snowed hard the night before:
You:  "Girl, I got 10 inches last night."
Them"  "I got 13."

Don't I wish I got 13 last night!  ;)

I got it, but it wasn't no 13!

 :-X  :-X

Yeah, I know what you mean Kelly. It's annoying isn't it?

WOW, snoring sounds popular (but wasn't on the list)  :D
.
Well, if I'm very tired (which happens on week-days), I do tend to snore when sleeping on my back, and sometimes on my right side (and often wake, thinking it must be someone else ... but I live alone, so I must be guilty).  ::)  :-X

My top, pet peeve is religious guys (sorry, religious guys) who think that a religious person's interpretation of what is good and right must, by default, be God's.

One such was related in a new documentary called 'Kevin's Questions'. Kevin is an AIDS orphan from Kenya. In one segment, he is told by a Community Elder that, if he is considering sexual intercourse, he should not use condoms, but pray to The Lord (it did not explain whether that meant he should procreate and God would protect him from AIDS, or if he should pray for his hormones to be taken away).

Guess the general pet peeve comes under the headings of 'do-gooders', 'know-alls', and the like, who try to tell us that we should be either straight and married, or be celibate. Just like them. Which, also, by default, must be how God really meant to create us (not).

Grrrrrrrr. I'd like to introduce them to a Baptist Minister who thinks that love for each other is what is important (straight or gay, black, white, or technicolour), that marriage is not a piece of paper, and that a piece of paper is not a licence to abuse someone with impunity.

My pet peeves is when you meet someone online and they lie about their age or looks.  I mean, if you're gonna meet people in person after meeting online, if you say you're 40, but are really 59, or say you're a blonde when your bald but wear a blonde rug,  isn't it going to be obvious!  I hate that, I guess I just really dislike dishonesty.

One of my pet peeves is a small pet peeve, but it still irritates me every time I  hear it.  It is people who regularly pronounce the word "ask" like the word "ax", and the word "asked" like the word "axed".  I hear it quite often from people and each time I hear it I want to correct them, but hold my tongue!

Spitting in public is also a pet peeve of mine.  I was waiting for the subway late one night, and this grody guy close to me kept spitting on the tracks.  It was nasty.  I was tempted to give him a piece of gum or something.

OMG, so true.  A lot of annoying things are generally recognized as annoying and therefore not done by most adults (e.g. nose picking).   But a lot of the same people have no compunction about spitting.  Eeeew!  (Like, at least spit into the garbage or bushes or somewhere out of plain sight....   :P)

UGH!! Spitting is so nasty to me. Small town here---I go to the same gas station all the time---why do guys spit right on the concrete??? I think--can't they just swallow instead of spitting where I might step in it?? It's disgusting.

A couple of days ago I was walking from the parking lot to go into a small store in town. I saw a little boy--about 7 or 8--open the door just a bit, spit, and go back in. I was so hacked---then I saw that he spit out a big wad of gum---smack dab in the doorway. OMG.

So I knew that gum was there. When I left, the door caught it and pushed it back. That little sucker -- I'm just happy I didn't step in the gum.

Dropping the letter "T" drives me round the bend!  My daughter's started doing it and I find myself correcting her constantly ... just like my mum used to do to me!!!  I knew I was turning into my mother!

She'll say "I'm off to see ma ma'e Ka'ie, see ya la'er", and I reply "Who's Ka'ie?" ... "ah Shu' up mum!"

It make me want to pull my hair outtttttttt!!

This almost sounds like she's developing a Cockney accent Susie. Don't they often drop the "t" sound in East London?

Anyway, I drive my out of town relatives nuts because I tend to stick an "r" sound where it doesn't belong. I say "warsh" instead of "wash". I also pronounce the short "u" sound differently in certain words. I say "poosh" instead of "push". But these are typical Indiana speech patterns, so it's not MY fault!  ;)

Susie, you're daughter's accent sounds charming. I'm wondering if this might be a fad some kids are doing over there right now, and it's considered cool to speak with a Cockney accent? Maybe she'll stop doing it when she gets a bit older, but it sounds very cute to me!  :D

1)  People who say some equivalent of "How you doing?" as they whiz by.  How rude is it to ask that question with no intention of pausing to hear the answer.  That's been a huge pet peeve of mine for decades.

2)  When people ask a question because they really want the answer to a whole other question.  This happens a lot.  Something like,

"Did Janet like the beach cabin?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Well, is she going back this weekend?"
"I don't know.  Why?"
"Well, I was wondering if she's going to go to the movie with you."
"I don't know.  Why?"
"Well, if she's going, are you going to ride with her?"
"I don't know yet, why?"
"Well, I want to  go pick up my stuff at the dry cleaner, and I was wondering if I could use the car that day."
%%Then why was your question about whether Janet liked the beach cabin??%%

Pet peeves???  OMG......don't get me started.

People who drive slow in the left lane, i.e. the passing lane.  I believe I saw a death penalty poll here.  Driving slow in the left lane should be considered one of the "certain extreme crimes".  If they would just put their cell phones down.........

BTW........babies shouldn't even be allowed in movie theaters.

Perhaps even worse ... on my trip last week of some 2,500 km (about 1,600 miles), it was quite amazing how many people I had to chug along behind while they drove at a snail's pace on a single lane each way country road where it was not permitted or too dangerous to pass, then, as soon as they got to the intermittent sections with passing lanes, sped up to prevent me passing, only to slow down again when the road narrowed. It is absolutely infuriating.

I can, t stand homophobic people, racist people, people who but in REALLY annoy me. 4x4 drivers, they think they own the roads. People who drive talking on their mobile phones. Mothers who walk down the road, so busy texting away on their bloody mobile phones, they arn,t paying attention to their children, they are far more interested in their next text...grrrrrrr. >:( Fat women who wear thongs and crop tops. WOW, you've been bottling that lot up Souxi!!  I'm glad you got it all off your chest!!  Awww don't be too harsh on overweight people, I quite admire their determination to dress the way they want ... I'm overweight and too shy to let it all hang out ... I dress like a sack of potatoes most of the time!!!  :-\ :-\

Susie normally I  wouldn,t discriminate against overweight people atall. I simply think that young girls wearing far too tight jeans, that push all your flab up and out, and crop tops that show off all your spare tyres and stretch marks, should be kept covered up. It looks dreadfull. imo. (me and my opinion)  ::)  ;)

Souxi said she hates it when people spit in public.  I hate it when people spit their gum out in the parking lot or on the sidewalk.  Every time I step on someone's nasty gum it makes me mad enough to kill.  If an adult spits his/her gum out where someone else can step on it he/she should be shot.  If a kid does it, his/her parents should be shot.   ;D

Gary

Here here Gary, quite right too. I hate irresponsible dog owners who let their dogs crap and don,t clear it up. I also hate dog owners who don,t put their dogs on leads in public places. And even more, I HATE irresponsible horse owners, yes HORSE, who let their horses shit all over the road, then when Souxi comes along on the country road, it gets all over my tyres!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. What I hate is when someone has "conscientiously" bagged their dog's poop, then left it by the side of the walking trail.  Why did they bother??

So we not only have poop, we have poop in plastic bags (that decay in how many thousand years?)

I'm feeling rather peevish today, and I missed this poll the first time around. My pet peeve for today is people who open a drawer, take something out of it, and then WALK AWAY leaving the drawer open. A corollary to this is when people open a cabinet, root around in it, and then walk away with their find, leaving the door open and everything that was in the cabinet hanging out on the floor and in between. Arrrrgghhh!

Oh, and I also voted for "baby's who cry in movie theaters" not because I hate babies and moms, but because it's "babies who cry..." Apostrophes where they don't belong is one of my pet peeves.

OK, I know I'm going to bring all sorts of wrath down on myself, but I'll say it anyway: breastfeeding in public.

Amen, sister and brother!  I can't stand the abysmal spelling and grammar all over the internet.

A pet peeve I think no one has mentioned: loud, repeated yawning, especially over the phone.

If you have to yawn, yawn.  But don't throw all kinds of vocals into it like an opera singer. "AHH....EEEAAAHHHHH" etc.

I have a friend who regularly calls me while relaxing in bed:  "I'm just lying in bed [YAWN], just being lazy.... [YAWN] God I'm feeling so laaaaazy today [YAWN]...

I keep asking her to stop it but it never seems to take.  (And also, does such a phone call have any purpose, or do people not have anything better to do than listen to you yawn?)

Wonder why?  Guess gay men are not immune to the sexualization of women's bodies.  Women's bodies have been used as sexual objects for so long, that when a mother breastfeeds - actually uses her breasts for what they are for - people get embarrassed because they believe she is exposing something that should only be seen in intimate sexual moments.

I understand the feeling, though.  I've sexualized men's bodies so much, I get embarrassed if a guy I find good looking takes off his shirt.

for me it is that I dont care to see any liquid coming from any part of anyone's body. I mean even TEARS are cringeworthy...think about it..what do you do? give them a hanky, pat their backs...I am never good with that kind of thing...I always want to give them some privacy til they recover themselves..

I REALLY dont' want to see snot, urine, feces, seminal fluid....none of that stuff....milk isnt' that much different to me. It is all 'natural'..dont' make it less disgusting.

now if someone is breast feeding and being modest (meaning I dont' KNOW it) then there is no harm no foul....it is the mothers that think they are auditioning for the role of Lilith on Cheers that irritate me..."I am MOTHER! BEARER of NEW life! I FEED my nectar to my progeny!!"...OY!

it's MILK. cows produce it daily, it isn't anything to brag too hard about.

it is like blowing your nose in public...discreetly into a tissue is fine...honking and letting it hang from your nose? NOT...

for me it is newspapers or books whose editors used spellcheck so they have sentences like this:

"We took the boat out to them lake"

cause 'them' is a word, spellcheck doesn't catch it.

my other pet peeve? people that correct other people's spelling or grammer on an informal website. You never know if the person you are 'correcting' is a non English speaker...I want to hear what people think..I dont' care about spelling.

It's interesting that the top two things that people hate are rudeness and mean people. I agree. Who wouldn't hate that? But, then, there's so much of it around!! Why, I wonder!

About belching & burping, nose picking, bum scratching, hairiness, etc. that doesn't bother me if it's a friend. Those are all endearing qualities IMHO! Also, people who spit when talking, they are likely to be passionate about what they're saying. I just try to dodge the wetness and keep on listening! Bad breath and bad hygiene don't bother me; I probably give back in kind!

So, there are people who detest immigrants? Why? aren't we all immigrants? I don't think there are many Native Americans on BetterMost (maybe David, partly!)

Hearing someone use the bathroom: now that is funny. Some guys sound like a horse when they let loose! It doesn't bother me at all.

Try this, as in the book title: "eats, shoots and leaves" when no pause is intended" "eats shoots and leaves."

But in my opinion the misuse is NOT using the serial comma.

You've reminded me of a time I was in California, and went to a botanical garden with some brokies....it was a peaceful place.  While we were walking, we came upon a lovely batch of flowers, and sitting on a nearby bench was a mother nursing her child, we stopped in our tracks, and she looked angry that we dared to be walking in the garden at that moment.

At that point, one of the Brokies leaned to me and said:  "Well, she picked the right place to do this." and then nodded to the flowers in front of us, and the mother.

The sign there indentifying the flowers read:  "Succulents".

 ???

She's feeding her baby.  Why is that 'no one else's business' and an 'intimate' thing?

So if you're eating or you're feeding your child a hamburger or bowl of cereal, are you going to go somewhere private since it's no one else's business when someone else is eating?

Looks like a plain-jane everyday thing to me.  And they do it many times per day.

Perhaps if society let them do it whenever their child needed to be fed, there would be less of these rosy ideas of 'intimate moments' for something as dirt-common as feeding a hungry child.

Well I can't speak for the others but the reason it feels awkward to me is because a woman's breasts are a very personal and private thing. Society teaches us this. And I always feel awkward looking in a general direction where a woman's breasts are exposed, or may be exposed. So I avert my eyes. If I am looking in her general direction she may think I am staring at her. And if she thought I was, how would she react? What would she think? So I do everything in my power to give her and the baby their privacy.

But that's just me.

If you think a mother nursing her child from her own breast is equivalent to anyone, adult or child, eating a hamburger, you and I clearly have no further or common grounds to discuss this topic.

Um, yeah it is.  Guess you haven't been around many nursing mothers have you?  That would be the common ground you're apparently unfamiliar with.  Yes, nursing mothers sit around, shooting the shit while their babies grope their breasts and suckle.  It's quite normal.

Ever been to 3rd world nations?  Breast-feeding is done anywhere and everywhere, women whip it out and it's done.  And the men of those countries - who are not gay - are not so caught up with the whole "breast fetish" that men in this country are.  Wonder why?

It's kinda the other way around, isn't it?  Why do women with push-up bras and low cut tops get  attention?  I think it's because it's not a very common sight - breasts are usually covered up most of the time.  And so when they finally get unveiled, straight men go gaga.

Like way back in the day, when women wore dresses down to the ground - all the time.  The sight of a woman's ankle was enough to bring down entire civilizations due to the sexual licentiousness of it all.

Majority of the sexiness comes from the forbidden fruit thing.  The less one has/sees of something, the more it is desired.

People who bitch about money and the price of something but go on with their expensive life-styles.

I was reading in this magazine about the cost of clergy in this new religion.  She was complaining about how she could just barely afford reading material.  She joined a religious group and then complained that the workshops and other classes were just too expensive for her...then in her next few lines goes on to say how she then had two children!

Um, she's supposedly living on the edge of her expenses, can barely afford a book, can't afford additional learning in her new religion, yet she can  afford pre-natal care, hospitalization for births and the care and feeding of two children for the next 18 years?  ??? ::)

Another pet-peeve, parents who say they're too busy and stressed out with "all" that they have to do in their lives.  So I asked one married lady with two children what was keeping her so stressed and busy.

Answer?  All her kids' extracurricular activities.

I responded, "So take them out."

She was like "What?"

(Her children are very young 5 and 8 years)

I said,"Take them out of soccer and ballet and church groups and skating and just let them play with their friends in the backyard.  You cut expenses and running around and you get to stay home with your family.  See?  No stress."

She looked at me like I was crazy and walked away.  So basically she makes herself busy, then complains about it.

It's actually quite a nice one.  The clergy only earn money from their workshops.  They have no big mother church or large organization that pays their salaries.  They earn a partial living from their teaching these workshops and otherwise have no overhead but they have to have other jobs because unlike Scientologists or Moonies or other big religions the followers of this religion are pretty fluid, so the money can't be depended on.  There is no tithing.  There are no big buildings that need to be upkept by their followers, no fleet of buses that ship hordes of followers off to missions or camps for the children.  It's basically grassroot level religion.

I'm reviving this thread, not just because it's Throwback Thursday but because I realized a behavior that peeves me very much. Have you ever noticed there are certain people you call who never answer their phone? Never! So you have to leave a message every time. And then, five minutes later, they call you. You answer, and they say "This is so-and-so." And then they don't say anything and that's when you realize that they didn't listen to your message and you are going to have to repeat it over again! Why do such people even have voicemail?  :P

We must hold the line against the 'ofs' of the world, Gil! Don't get me started on pronunciation and grammatical pet peeves! I'm overrun with them!

Now that I live by myself, I have escaped from a pet peeve in the kitchen: having to scoop all the bits of food and trash out of the left side of the sink and put it in the right side of the sink where there's a garbage disposal. I used to have to do this several times a day, but no more! (unless you count the times I do it over at my daughter's house, where I hang out two afternoons a week.)

Writers of historical fiction (stories, books, or screen plays) who use "okay" or "OK" in stories, etc., that take place somewhere besides the U.S. and sometime before the 1830s.

The OED surmises that "OK" was first used in the U.S. in the 1830s, and the oldest written reference to it comes from the Presidential election of 1840, when it came to be used to refer to President Martin Van Buren, whose nickname was "Old Kinderhook" from his birthplace in the state of New York. According to the OED, during that election campaign, supporters of Van Buren formed what was called "the OK Club."

I may well have/probably mentioned this before, but one of my greatest is people who ride bicycles on the sidewalk.

This happened to me again this morning, on my way to work. This isn't just annoying. This is dangerous to pedestrians because bicycles can move so quickly and quietly. It's a tragedy when a cyclist is killed in an accident with a motor vehicle, but the cycling community will get more support from me when cyclists stop riding on the sidewalk.

I could also add, Bicyclists who ride the wrong way on a one-way street. I once came within a foot of being run down by a cyclist (a food delivery person to judge from the container on the back of the bike) who was riding east on a street that's one-way west, and it was night, and he had no headlight on the bike.

My city is in the process of expanding and reordering bike lanes in the streets. The city will be moving the lane on my street (runs one-way west) from the north side to the south side of the street. This means we will be losing the loading zone in front of my building, which is located on the south side of the street. Once the move is complete, people in my building who will need to unload groceries, etc., from their cars will now have to do so on the north side of the street and then carry their groceries, etc., across the street to reach the building. And this is not a quiet residential street; this is a busy city street.

Agreed about bicyclists on sidewalks unless they're under age 10. And even then, parents should keep a better eye on them; I often encounter little kids careening around without full control of their vehicles and have to be ready to dodge them.

I have more than once almost hit bicyclists in my car who are riding the wrong way on sidewalks. In fact, in one case I did hit him! I was pulling onto a divided street from a gas station. I looked to the left, no cars, and started to pull out. I hit this kid who was riding his bike in the wrong direction on the sidewalk.

He was fine and got up and rode away. But then I remembered one plot line in Robert Altman's "Shortcuts," based on stories by Raymond Carver, when that exact thing happens but later the kid is found to have a brain injury and is dead within about a day.

Hope that didn't happen!

Well, I don't blame their parents for that. For one thing, they might want to stay near their house for any number of reasons. Also, taking them to the park to ride would mean loading the bike(s) into the car, which might be a hassle or, depending on the size of the car, impossible. And some of the kids actually are on their way to the park.

My neighborhood is extremely residential. It's in the city, but it's single-family homes with yards and the traffic is light. If I lived in a neighborhood with denser development and traffic it would be different.

It's a funny case with cyclists, because I tend to shift my standpoint depending on whether I'm driving or riding my bike  ::)

Despite being designed in increasing numbers, separate cycle paths are still a rarity in my city (there's simply not enough space to squeeze them in between the road and the sidewalk), so most cyclists end up riding right alongside the main traffic on the road. And I'd be totally ok with that if they kept close to the kerb and weren't so unpredictable! And by 'unpredictable' I mean suddenly making a dart in front of my car because they want to turn left.

Frankly, although riding your bike on the sidewalk is technically illegal (unless you're under 10 and accompanied by an adult), sometimes I'd much prefer it if cyclists mounted that kerb and carried on on the sidewalk, provided there are few or no pedestrians there. That way, they wouldn't hold up the traffic.

Pet peeve of mine, wasting food.

I have a coworker that must've been denied food as a kid, because anytime we have an event that is catered at work, she loads up her plate, and stashes it in her cubicle.  Sometimes the food will last  her for three meals.

I just look at her and think:  "others may have wanted that food that day, but didn't have it because you were so greedy."

Many are gross bodily functions, so OK, I guess those kind of qualify.

But short people? Fat people? If other people's body types are your pet peeve, then YOU are my pet peeve. How are those any of your business? (When I say "you" I mean any random person -- not anyone here, including dot-matrix, who started the thread.)

On the other end, racists?? George Bush (2018 version: Donald Trump)?? If you consider racism or a bad president a "pet peeve," you are also my pet peeve. Those are much bigger deals than a peeve!

Nothing about incorrect grammar or bicycle traffic or lunch stealing. Those are legitimate pet peeves.

There are TVs all over the place where I work, and people are free to watch them. Of course, it's a newspaper. And the TVs are tuned to news shows. We're also welcome -- encouraged, even -- to go on Facebook and Twitter and other social media.

Back on topic, I don't so much mind differences of opinion on specific shows, though I agree it's really rude to put down anything somebody just said they liked. "I could never really get into that one," or "too violent for me" or whatever is OK -- the difference being it doesn't trash the whole show, just says it's not to that person's taste.

But what I hate most are people who, when you mention some TV show, self-righteously declare that they don't watch TV at all or don't own a TV.

This used to really annoy me back in the days when there weren't that many great shows, though there were some that even the anti-TV snobs would probably enjoy: Ken Burns' series, for example. But try telling them that. They like to congratulate themselves on being intellectually and culturally superior to couch potatoes who let the trash-filled idiot box rot their brains.

But nowadays when I hear someone say it? My annoyance is mixed with pity because they're missing so much. I think there's a lot on TV now that's better than the vast majority of movies. Now those people are smug and condescending in a really ignorant and pathetic way.

I hear you, Katherine! Lately I've been reading articles in The New Yorker on television and making a list of programs I want to watch some day. One of these days, and soon, I will be tied down with a new baby granddaughter and can watch some shows, I hope. But now, I find myself either working into the evening, going out to join friends or do volunteer work, or working in the garden in the cool of the evening. In fact, my TV hasn't even been hooked up to receive cable TV. I can only watch DVDs on it. If I want to watch shows, I have to do it on my computer. I'm a bit behind. . .trying to make it through the second season of Grace and Frankie, but it's slow going.

I was reading about artificial intelligence in TNY, and piqued by a description of Westworld. Anthony Hopkins plays a cyborg in it? Right up my alley.

Your TV must be much better than ours. I would not be without it for the news but I am not interested in competition Cooking shows which seem to fill it and sorry but only English programs attract me. I cannot understand most American accents.  I cannot watch a movie because the adverts which break in every 10 minutes drive me to distraction.  I would much rather pay the $10 and see the movie in the Theatre. So I turn on the TV about 5.50pm and watch the end of the English Quiz program "The Chaser" then an hour of our National news followed by either the local news on our local city TV or the National Current affairs program but I am usually cooking my dinner at the same time. I rarely watch more than an hour afterwards and usually come back to my computer or go to bed (9pm). Sunday night there is often an English murder mystery "Endeavour", "Morse", "Lewis" or my favourite "Midsummer Murders" but last night there was none but a real docudrama about a court case from 1989 involving police corruption before I lived in NZ so all news to me. However it was only because I wanted to find the end that I lasted 2 hours through the adverts. I thought about coming to my computer and looking it up on wikipedia instead.
I do have one friend who is in his 80's and has no TV and no computer. Now that he cannot do much gardening, he spends most of his time in the University research library (he worked as a research assistant at the university but obviously a long time ago). He is in my Monday afternoon walking group.

Anthony Hopkins is in it, but he's not a cyborg, at least not as far as we viewers know so far. But the cyborgs are state-of-the-art (well, actually light years beyond the current state of the art), so it's one of those shows where you can't always tell for sure whether someone is a cyborg or not. The show is about what the difference is between humans and ultra-sophisticated robots and whether there even is a significant moral difference.

I'm a skeptic on that subject, but the show makes about a semi-plausible case. Apparently (in the show) the contents of human brains can be downloaded and uploaded the same way robots' can, so ...? The show is also very confusing because it keeps jumping around in time. One of its creators is Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan's brother, who wrote the short story from which Christopher's Memento was made. The time tricks in Memento compared to Westworld are like checkers compared to 3D chess.

Have you ever seen Blade Runner? I saw the first one when it came out in theaters decades ago, didn't like it that much and never saw it again. But then when my son and I were in Washington last fall we went to see Blade Runner 2049. This time I had a better idea of the concept (though not always exactly what was going on in the plot). Those robots are possibly even more human-like than Westworld's; even the robots don't know they're robots.

I got through the second season, but I know what you mean. I don't like the show that much; I don't think it's very well written. But it's fun watching those four stars.

I watch about an hour of TV a night, usually while eating dinner and pretty late in the evening.

I don't just turn on the TV and click around to see what's on. I always know what I'm going to watch beforehand -- either an episode of a currently running TV series or a streaming series or, sometimes, a movie.

Sometimes it's a little over an hour, but rarely. For example, I watched a two-hour movie over the weekend and split it into two nights.

(FYI, it was pretty good: American Made starring Tom Cruise, based on the true story of a skilled pilot who's likable but not that bright and gets caught up in running drugs and weapons back and forth from Latin America in a mysterious covert project that eventually becomes Iran-Contra!)

Pet peeve of the day: it bothers me when people say they are going to throw out, toss, or get rid of things. I wish they would use a more respectful term. I'm hypersensitive about this and I shouldn't be, but some people are ravenously consuming and make a big deal about how much they throw away. And, where is away, anyway? It's not like the stuff disappears! It just becomes somebody else's problem.

Two pet peeves, both related to train travel.

The first is people who talk loudly into their phones so that half the car can hear them. I once learned far more than necessary about the relationship between some guy sitting directly behind me and his girlfriend. Then there was the entitled young woman (overweight, very short haircut, hair dyed green and purple) who boarded the train in Lancaster (as did I, of course). She sat two rows in front of me across the aisle and carried on a very loud conversation into her phone. Finally I flagged down a conductor and asked him to ask her if she could keep it down. He did, she replied, "Sure," then went right on talking just as loudly as before.

As for the second, I suppose everyone knows how passenger cars are laid out--two seats together on both sides of the car, with an aisle down the center. What might not be known is that Amtrak cars have a power outlet in the car wall at each set of seats. Yesterday for about half the ride home, I was by myself, seated in the window seat. Then some entitled Gen-whatever took the aisle seat, opened her laptop, and reached right across me to plug in the power cord. "Sorry," she said, "I have to charge this." I kept my cool and merely said that I was getting out at Philadelphia (the train ran through to New York City), and would she like to change seats so she would be right next to the outlet? I did, however, say that I didn't like the cord across my legs. She just said, "Oh, thank you," and we changed seats. This is not the first time this has happened.

Amtrak's quiet car is a wonderful thing, but I suppose it's only on Acela, not on the regional trains.

They also have them on the Keystone trains that run back and forth between Harrisburg and New York City. I suppose they also have them on all the Northeast Corridor trains.
