Title: What is the reason you chose your Avatar?
Post by: silkncense on May 09, 2006, 11:56:41 am: I enjoy the little pics people have & sometimes have wondered why they were chosen? Although I am more of an Ennis, I love Jack's 'effort' with life.

My favorite quote, used by Jack as reassurance to Ennis twice in the film (before the 2nd tent scene & when Ennis collapses during the lake confrontation), is "It's alright; s' alright".

And so, I love the picture of Jack, bruised, somewhat rejected, yet still making an effort by wisfully asking, "You goina do this again next summer?"

How about yours?

But I am inept with photo stuff, so when I finally took the time to figure out how to do an avatar, I just grabbed the first beautiful Ennis picture (redundant phrase!) I could find, which was on a message that Julie posted. There are probably some I would like even better, such as the one in the upper left corner of chefjudy's avatar. But this one was handy and it certainly meets my standards for beauty!

This (the tree and sunset one, for posterity, after I've moved on to another) was the first one I was satisfied with. And it reminds me of us (the branches), and nature (Our Film), and the beautiful melancholy of sunset (Our Film's tender, sweet yet tragic blissfulness). Something like that.

He's not perfect, of course, but he's passionate, open, optimistic, and unafraid. I chose this particular shot of him first because I love this shot from the movie - when he looks down on second thought rather than approach and introduce himself to Ennis when Ennis isn't ready, and second because I love the composition - I love the way the various shades of blue in the background meet the black of his hat and eyebrows and lashes and the white of his face and then come full circle with the blue of his shirt. Makes me think of that Kenny Wayne Shepherd (ironic, ain't it?) song called "Blue on Black" ("Blue on black, tears on a river, push on a shove, it don't mean much. Joker on jack, match on a fire, cold on ice, a deadman's touch. Whisper on a scream doesn't change a thing, doesn't bring you back - blue on black.")

I love the way they're intertwined and (although this doesn't have much relevance) I love how it was inspired by the picture from Titanic. I was looking for picture to go with "Youth is watsed on the Young..." and it was either this or one of them fighting (which would have reinforced how youth is wasted on the young) but I decided to go for the slightly happier picture.

I didnt have an avatar/pic because I could barely admit I saw the Mountain. I have had a rough time this year so far with lots of stuff in my head about what the film said to me and then a car wreck and now figurin myself out all from a state like Idaho which is about as closed as you can be to different thinking about stuff. I am now brave enough to put my pic up as an avatar here because Im not afraid anymore. I still dont know exactly who I am inside but at least I am thinking about it for the first time ever in my whole life!! I cant believe I am so different after a movie. I have done more crying about things this year than I have done my whole entire life. You folks may not know how much this place is important to me because without it I'd still be the shuffling around in my life going nowhere.

So now I can put my pic up here cuz I know I am with my buds (heh Phil hates that word so I can say friends too!!)

That's all wonderful and I am so happy for you! The movie is real powerful! I'm 57, I came at at 29, and after seing BBM eight times in the theater, I STILL cry each time I see it and sometime when I just listen to the music!

I chose my avatar because of HEATH!! I am also definitely more an Ennis than a Jack.

Then I started becoming more and more a Jake fan, rather than a Heath fan, but I came back 180° to Heath, after I got the results from celebmatch.com! :laugh:

So after trying about 5 or 6 different avatars, this one stuck.

One day I was looking on the net for BBM pictures and then, like a beacon of light it shone out. I guess there are better pictures, but I'm just so used to it. One day I changed it for another picture of Jake G. and it just looked wrong. :( So it stayed. ;D

Sorry, thought you would know what a esbat ritual is. I've read in your past posts that you seem to a have had a passing interest in pagan/or Wicca. An Esbat ritual is a ritual concerning the phases of the moon in the Wicca religion. But it really wasn't a serious quote....no need for an esbat party! ;D
