Title: Favorite, Suave or Unusual Cocktail Recipes
Post by: Brown Eyes on September 05, 2007, 10:41:53 pm

Hey Buds,

I thought a thread dedicated to sharing interesting, unique or crazy cocktail recipes and mixology tips might be fun.  For those of you who don't drink, feel free to contribute your favorite "virgin" recipes (or recipes without any alcohol) or fun smoothie recipes, soda fountain recipes, etc.

I'll start with my favorite whiskey recipe (not so crazy or unique... but it's definitely worth trying if you haven't already):

The good ol' Manhattan~ It's not too sweet and not too bitter.

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/1868367-aac.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/1868367-aac)

NGREDIENTS:

    * 1 1/4 oz bourbon whiskey
    * 1/2 oz sweet vermouth
    * 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
    * maraschino cherry for garnish

PREPARATION:

   1. Pour the ingedients into a mixing glass with ice cubes.
   2. Stir well.
   3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
   4. Garnish with the cherry.

Variations on the Manhattan:

    * Dry Manhattan- Use a dash of dry vermouth and garnish with a lemon twist.
    * Perfect Manhattan- Equal parts of sweet and dry vermouth. Garnish with a lemon twist.
    * Brandy Manhattan- Replace whiskey with brandy.
    * Scotch Manhattan- Replace whiskey with Scotch.
    * Southern Comfort Manhattan- Replace whiskey with Southern Comfort.

Great idea. I hope some people start posting. I do not drink much but keep a bottle of Grey Goose Vodka in the cupboard. It last for months and months on end. I usually just put some in snapple. How pathetic. So I have no recipes, unless that's a recipe.  :P

That's a recipe.

I myself like baileys, tia maria and chocolate milk - but I have no idea what this cocktail is called!

Our friend MaineWriter wrote this little drabble about a drink Ennis and I enjoy...

Ennis chuckled to himself as he typed on the keyboard, hunting and pecking in his one-finger typing style.

“What are you laughin at?” asked Jack, looking up from the couch where he was still deeply engrossed in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

“Oh nothing, just havin a lil bit a fun on this website.”

“What website?”

“Just one with recipes for drinks. Lots a comments here on this one called a Cosmopolitan. Sayin it’s a gay drink. I’m addin my two cents.”

“We ain’t ever had Cosmopolitans, En.”

“Yeah, well you better go buy the ingredients this afternoon cuz I just stated publicly that we like ta drink em. Sounds like ya can get good and snockered if ya have more than two of these.”

Jack got up and looked over Ennis’s shoulder. “Hm, lime juice, vodka, cranberry juice, Grand Marnier…we have all that in the house. I could make one right now.”

“Ya sure?”

“Sure, why not?”

“Well, see this other comment…they make ya horny.”

“Ya got a problem with that?” said Jack with a slow smile.

“Have I ever…?” said Ennis, as he got up from his chair.

I am truly not a drinker , but i have two i like
     Smith and Kerns

      regulation size cocktail glass
one oz Kahlua  depends on the size of glass or strength you want..
      one oz vodka   "
      three ozs club soda

fill to top with half and half

Just a plain old fashion Baileys and coffee.

cup of good blend of coffee  (your fav)
As much Baileys as you like to taste,

     top with whipped creme.

         great for cold winter nights.....

It sounds like we definitely have some Baileys fans here.  I like it too... but in small doses.

So, I'm posting yet another whiskey recipe to keep the BBM theme going a bit...

Whiskey Sour...

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/1879119-fe4.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/1879119-fe4)

1 1/2 ounces whiskey (or bourbon, Scotch, Canadian whiskey, or Irish whiskey)
4 ounces sour mix, recipe follows
Crushed ice
1 maraschino cherry

Combine the whiskey and sour mix in a large old-fashioned glass with ice. Stir, garnish with cherry, and serve.

Sour Mix:
1-ounce lemon juice
1-ounce sugar
2 ounces water

Combine lemon juice and sugar, then dilute with water and stir to dissolve sugar.

Yield: 4 ounces

OK!  Here goes:  this recipe is different from the usual sick-sweet cosmos one gets at most bars.  It's more tangy.  We'll have to ask Jack if it truly makes him horny.

Cosmo-Paul-itan

3 parts Stoly Cranberry
1 part Cointreau (or a little more if you like it sweeter)
1 part fresh lime juice
splash Pomegranate juice (could use cranberry juice; it's mostly for color)

Fill cocktail shaker with ice halfway
Add above ingredients
ShakeShakeShake!
Strain into chilled cocktail glass
Garnish with lime twist
Enjoy!

Back many years ago I was drinking at The Tavern in Abingdon, Virginia, a quaint little establishment with a colonial era theme where I once bussed tables and was introduced to the most wicked thing: a drink called:

Mister, Your Damn Right.

I have been looking for the recipe for it many years, I think it may have been something only the bartender knew, but as best I can recall it had......

1 shot of Tequila
1 shot of Drambuie
1 shot of Tia Maria
1 shot of Grand Mariner
1 shot of Kahlua

in a Highball glass 3/4 filled with ice and topped off with half and half.

It only took one.

If anyone is familiar with this drink or can correct anything, please let me know.

Shakestheground... that's an awesome sounding cocktail with a great name (it definitely sound strong though...  Tequila and Kahlua sounds like an interesting combo).

OK... here's another fun old-style drink.  I'm kind of a fan of kitschy old-school cocktails.

Tom Collins ~

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/1959018-bbd.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/1959018-bbd)

2 oz gin
1 oz lemon juice
1 tsp superfine sugar
3 oz club soda
1 maraschino cherry
1 slice orange

In a shaker half-filled with ice cubes, combine the gin, lemon juice, and sugar. Shake well. Strain into a collins glass almost filled with ice cubes. Add the club soda. Stir and garnish with the cherry and the orange slice.

So way back when, in my wicked youth, I drank things like Blueberry Daiquiris. This was a specialty of Testa's in Bar Harbor, Maine. Oh they went down smooth. Real smooth...and then when you stood up from the stool, you fell on your head. Those were the good old days!

Frozen Blueberry Daiquiri

½ cup fresh or frozen blueberries
1 tblsp fresh lime juice
1½ oz White Rum
1 teaspoon sugar
1 cup of crushed ice

Add blueberries, lime juice, rum and sugar into a blender and blend until smooth. Add ice and blend until slushy. Garnish with blueberries skewered and a lime twist.

I'm sorry, Leslie, there ain't enough booze in that.  I looks like you need a spoon to eat that concoction.

Here's the original Long Island Iced Tea

Equal parts: vodka, gin, rum, triple sec and tequila.  Add a splash of coke (that makes it look like iced tea).  Best served on the rocks with a cab voucher.

Acutally, the Testa's version was served in a rocks glass (not a martini glass) and looked more like a slushy. And I have a feeling it had much more rum in it than this recipe! But I was searching on the Internets and this was all I could find! LOL

I have a great daiquiri story with pictures but it might take a bit to pull it together....stay tuned.

Wow Paul!  That's great Paul!

I definitely have some interesting Long Island Iced Tea stories myself from years gone by...  but I'll leave those for another day. I think that recipe always wins the prize for the *most* booze content.  And, by the way, drinking stories will not be considered "off topic" on this thread.  So, Leslie, feel free to share those daiquiri stories whenever the whim strikes.
 ;D

So, here's a goodie...

Mojito~

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/midsize/1959409-6f1.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/1959409-6f1)

3 fresh mint sprigs
2 tsp sugar
3 tbsp fresh lime juice
1 1/2 oz light rum
club soda

In a tall thin glass, crush part of the mint with a fork to coat the inside. Add the sugar and lime juice and stir thoroughly. Top with ice. Add rum and mix. Top off with *chilled* club soda (or seltzer). Add a lime slice and the remaining mint, and serve.

Wow Paul!  That's great Paul!

This was a l-o-n-g time ago.  We were at a restaurant and the food never came.  I don't think we noticed, because we had a Long Island iced tea.  The manager eventually came over and said that our order had fallen off the "wheel of fortune" in the kitchen, and could he buy us another drink...

Sure!   we said.  Well, in long island veritas  , as they say.  The timing was right, and it went pretty well, all things considered.

Amanda, I'd love to hear your Long Island iced tea stories.  And, congratulations on 2500 posts!

Ya know, we oughta go to Mexico... and have a Margarita!  8) ;D

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/midsize/1981251-3cb.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/1981251-3cb)

Of course, there are dozens of variations on this cocktail (and I particularly prefer mine on the rocks rather than frozen and blended).  Here's one good one... a little fancier than the standard:

Cadillac Margarita

Serves 1.

2 fresh lime wedges
1 1/2 ounces of your favorite tequila, silver or gold
1 ounce fresh sweet and sour mix
1/2 ounce Cointreau
1/2 ounce Grand Marnier
Salt (optional)

Squeeze lime into a shaker. Top with ice, then pour in all other ingredients except Grand Marnier and salt. Shake well. If you like, salt the rim of a 12-ounce glass. Pour drink into glass; top with Grand Marnier.

I remember having quite a few Vodka Collinses back in college days. A looooong time ago. Never cared for the taste of gin, and the only change is to substitute vodka for gin. Delish!

And another drink I grew up on (in New Orleans, the drinking age was 18 back then and even underage it was common to have a drink before and wine with dinner. Much more civilized down there.) is a half-and-half, half sweet vermouth, half dry (one jigger each), with a lemon peel to wipe the edge of the glass with and then plunked into the drink. Very pleasant.

For Lynne
The Maker's Makes Mark Manhattan

Three parts Maker's Mark Bourbon
One part sweet vermouth (or less)
Dash Angostura bitters

Fill shaker halfway with ice
Add ingredients
ShakeShakeShake
Garnish with cherry
Get along, little dogies

Variation:  for a "Perfect" Manhattan, use equal parts sweet and dry vermouth.  Often the bitters are omitted, and served with a twist.

Heya Paul,

I love Manhattans and are probably the cocktail that I order most regularly when out on the town.  8)

Here's a fun one that an ex-girlfriend of mine introduced me to.  I'm usually not a fan of drinks that are very sweet.  For instance, I like Manhattans because they're a tiny bit sweet, but really just a tiny bit.

Anyway, this one is almost like a little work of art and is definitely tasty if you're in the mood for dessert. :)

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/2010917-ed8.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/2010917-ed8)

1/3 shot Kahlua® coffee liqueur
1/3 shot amaretto almond liqueur
1/3 shot Bailey's® Irish cream

Carefully layer ingredients, in order, into a shot glass; kahlua, amaretto, then irish cream.

Serve in: Shot Glass

You're also supposed to drink it all in one swig so that you get all the flavors together.

I regularly drink about four type of cocktails

Gin and IT - 1 third Gin 2 thirds Red Vermouth or you can use Dubonnet - you can add ice but I prefer not to.

Margaritas for two - 100cl Silver Tequila, 60cl Triple Sec (not cointreau), 30cl fresh lemon juice, shake all the ingredients together with ice and pour into salt rimmed glasses.

Electric soup - 8 parts Plymouth Gin, 1 part Noilly Prat vermouth, couple of olives - shake over ice or better still chill all ingredients and the glasses, stir mix and pour.

Whisky Old fashioned - double measure whisky, two white sugar cubes, couple dashes of angustura bitters, half a small orange sliced fine.
Put the sugar cubes into a large whiskey glass and drop a few dashes of bitters onto them. Add the orange slices and the whisky, stir vigorously to dissolve the sugar.  You can use ice I prefer not to.

Amanda, Amanda!

Do I have the book for you!

Imbibe!: From Absinthe Cocktail to Whiskey Smash, a Salute in Stories and Drinks to "Professor" Jerry Thomas, Pioneer of the American Bar

Here's a description:

Cofounder of the Museum of the American Cocktail, Wondrich delivers a well-researched chronicle of Professor Jerry Thomas's life and times as late 19th-century bartender extraordinaire. From gold rush saloons in San Francisco to last calls in lower Manhattan, Thomas collected material for The Bartender's Guide, the seminal 1862 collection of cocktail recipes. Wondrich offers up 100 classic cocktails from Thomas's guide and other period sources, along with 16 new drinks that recall those golden days. Old-time tools, ingredients and measurements are conveniently converted to their contemporary equivalents, as julep strainers and toddy sticks are hard to come by. Fortunately, many of the concoctions transcend time in their simplicity. General Harrison's Egg Nogg, for example, calls for hard cider, sugar, an egg and some lumps of ice. For the newly minted offerings, Julie Reiner of New York's Flatiron Lounge conjures up a Cherry Smash that includes brandied cherries, cognac and Orange Curaçao, and Wondrich weighs in with a glass of rye, simple syrup and Angostura bitters, which he calls a Tombstone. The result is a lovely homage to Thomas's indomitable spirits.

They just showed an interview with the author on our local news-magazine show. He was a funny guy. I bet this book is entertaining!

Thinking of absinthe makes me think of France (and French artists)... which makes me think of kir... which is one of the great French drinks as far as I'm concerned.  Both regular kir and kir royale.  Lately, it occurred to me that I don't really need to go to Paris to have a kir... so I bought myself some crème de cassis and make them at home rather regularly.  A kir royale, is of course, more of a rare treat.
 ;D

Kir~

6 oz dry white wine
1 tbsp crème de cassis

optional:
2 - 3 ice cubes
1 twist lemon peel

Combine ingredients in a large white wine glass. Twist the lemon peel to release the oil and drop it into the glass.

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/midsize/3913473-e53.JPG" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/3913473-e53)

Kir royale~

1 part crème de cassis
5 parts Champagne

Pour creme de cassis into a glass and gently pour champagne on top.

<img src="http://www.divshare.com/img/3913472-e39.jpg" border="0" /> (http://www.divshare.com/download/3913472-e39)
