Title: "Brothers and Sisters"
Post by: TOoP/Bruce on November 14, 2007, 11:06:13 am
"Brothers and Sisters" is a series about the loving but dysfunctional Walker family who reunite in the wake of death of their father to find he had secrets he had been keeping.  Some of this is familiar evening soap opera, and the first season seemed to have problems with trying to figure out how to balance the stories among an ensemble cast.

One of the brothers is Kevin, a gay attorney.  Interestingly, there doesn't seem to be much drama about his being gay.  Too many of the storylines have been about his revolving door romances with impossibly goodlooking fellows with commitment issues - or is he the one with commitment issues?  I guess time will tell.

What strikes me as interesting about this is the very ordinary treatment of his being gay.  It isn't a big deal.  We haven't heard much about his coming out, it just seems to be a given that Kevin is gay, and maybe everyone has known it all along.  A new storyline has been introduced involving his uncle Saul (Ron Rifkin) who after a season and a half, is now first coming out to his sister Nora (Sally Field).

For anyone wanting to see a treatment of gay characters that feels more authentic and ordinary than showy, this might hold some interest for you.

I have loved this show from the start for many, many reasons, and Kevin was just a wonderful plus in a show that already had much to recommend it. And yes, instead of Saul's coming out to Nora being the big deal of the show, it was almost a throw-away comment at the end.

I'm glad to hear you say that it seems authentic to you, Bruce, because it seemed that way to me, but I don't really have much to go on!

I think that the difference in Saul's and Kevin's experiences because of the difference in their ages will make for some interesting conversations in coming shows. As Saul recently said to him, something like You're used to walking down the street holding hands...It has been a different world for Saul.

I'm really glad that you brought this up.

Lauren

Ron Rifkin has been sitting on the sideline of the story for too long.  I am hoping this will give him a little more dramatic challenge.  He's a very good actor.

The contrast between "gay then" and "gay now" has come up before in terms of Brokeback.  I also think this is a great area of unexplored dramatic content, that I hope the writers will use well!

Brothers and Sisters is one of the very few shows I watch on television.  Its a wonderful series.  I think Sally Fields does a great job as the mom and Calissta Flockhart is a wonderful actress.  I love the show.  I too am interested in what drama will come around Saul's character as an older gay man.  And yes it was a very interesting comment Saul made to Kevin about the differences in time.  Meaning growing up gay as a now older man compared to Kevin being a gay man here in this time.  From what I've seen of how people react to my daughter being gay, there is no big deal.  Not in my family or in public or even her job.   Her friends accept it too.  SO why would a new show make a deal out of couple of its characters being gay?  I think its very fitting for the times, and makes for a very normal "dysfunctional" family and a very comfortable show to watch.   :)

I really dig this show.  It can make me laugh one minute and cry the next.  My favorite thing about the show is the relationships between all the characters, how none of them are islands, how they are all tied together.  Whatever happens on the show affects them all in some way.  It’s very well constructed that way.

I like Kitty, but McAllister/Rob Lowe doesn’t really do it for me.  Hasn’t since “Class” and that was forever ago.  I love Sarah in all her tough prickliness.  Tommy and Julia can be non-entities at times, though that’s probably because they were – at least originally -  stable, secure, and the most practical.  For awhile there, they weren’t often written for.  I like him because he looks kinda like one of my nephews.

Saul is getting interesting, and I look forward to seeinig his story play out, especially since Nora and Kevin will surely be involved.  Somebody needs to get it on with Michael Nouri.  A man like that shouldn’t go to waste.

I like Kevin, his sharp wit and tongue, but I wasn’t that intrigued by his relationships in the first season.  The one with the closeted actor got tedious after awhile (Come out of the closet for me. . . Wait!  Stay in the closet if you want.).  But Jason looks promising.  He is so freaking good looking.  If he were my minister, I’d be on my knees day and night.

I’m most intrigued by Holly and Rebecca.  I like how Holly has been incorporated into the show and the family, tension intact.  I was a little disappointed in them when they walked out of Justin’s intervention, though it did get ugly there.  Patricia Wettig has done a good job of making the other woman likeable and sympathetic.

It seems that it was set up last year for Rebecca to be a troublemaker, and I hope that’s pursued further.  And do Emily VanCamp and Dave Annable have strong chemistry that’s freaky considering they are playing half siblings or what?  I don’t think they would go there by pairing those two; it’s not that type of show.  But they’d make a cute couple.  Almost as cute as him and me would be together.  Don’t really like her bangs this season though.

Speaking of Dave Annable, I LOVE   him.  Those eyes. . . that hair. . . that vulnerability.  Sexy and sweet.  He was my favorite on “Reunion” on FOX a couple of years back.  I would marry him in a heartbeat.  Justin is my second favorite character on the show.

But Nora is my absolute favorite.  The major, main reason I love the show is Sally Field.   I hate hyperbole and gushing, but I can't help but do it when it comes to her.  She is magnificent.  I’ve loved her since I was a kid, and she continues to be one of most loveable, charismatic people I’ve ever seen.  I haven’t seen anything she’s been in where I wasn’t drawn to and transfixed by her.

My favorite episode so far is the one where they had the game night competition with the rival family lead by Susan Sullivan and Perry King, even though Kitty and Nora were shameful for stealing the trophy at the end.  The best part was when Kevin kept calling out answers in charades that revealed how upset he was with Kitty. . .

I’ve read that Betty Buckley was originally cast in Field’s role on B&S.  No offense against Buckley, but I can’t imagine anyone else in the role of Nora.  I don’t think the show would work even half as well as it does without Field.

I also read that Jonathan LaPaglia was originally cast as Kevin.  I don’t think I would have minded him playing the part.  Though I have nothing against Matthew Rhys, I think LaPaglia is sexy as hell.  I might have had a tough time choosing between him and Dave Annable, so I guess it’s good (for Dave) that LaPaglia didn’t keep the part.

They actually filmed a pilot with Buckley and LaPaglia, and I’d love to see it.  Does anyone know if it’s included on the Season 1 DVD?  I’m tempted to get the DVD set since I’ve seen it on sale next week for about 30 bucks.

Look what I just found!

I was laughing before I even watched your videos, SKJ, just remembering these scenes, but I watched them anyway and this jumped out at me:

"You didn't come in here looking for a band aid, did you?"

"You didn't go up there to fish."          ;)

I didn't know a lot of these actors in the beginning. I tuned in because of Sally Field (yes - she is an amazing person), Patricia Wettig (I was a real fan of "Thirty-something," and Ken Olin, one of the producers (?) is her real-life husband, but they were both married to other people on "Thirty-something"), Rob Lowe (I really liked him in "West Wing" and I do like the pairing with Kitty), and Tom Skerritt (that didn't last long, did it?). And I really wasn't familiar with Calista Flockhart at all and was curious about her.

I didn't know Ron Rifkin by name, but he was a familiar face.

Oh my gosh, I didn't watch your third video before I commented on the other two! That is so great. I noticed another face from "Thirty-something" in there, very briefly, being introduced to Kitty.

If we hadn't ever seen Sally Field then we probably would have been okay with a different mom, but it would never work for us now. I don't even see her being able to do the things that Sally Field can pull off. I think that the writing would have had to be totally different. Grey-haired mom would never take a running leap into the swimming pool fully clothed!

Ken Olin (Thirty-something) also directed "Alias" with Jennifer Garner.  If Ron Rifkin's face looks familiar, it might be that you recognized him from his role as Arvin Sloan on "Alias."

I absolutely LOVE this show!! I have seen all aired episodes of both seasons and can't wait for next week's episode!

My favourite characters are Kevin, Saul, Tommy and weirdly also Kitty and Robert. Nora annoys me horribly, but Sally Field is doing a good job! I really like Ron Rifkiin! Never saw 'Alias' but I've seen him in a few other things and I think he's a fine fine actor! I'm hoping that his storyline will further develop beautifully!

I did not know Matthew Rhys, but I do now!!  :P Of the three boyfriends he had, I prefered Chad most (not many share this with me it seems - but I am a sucker for 'coming-out' stories). I'm hoping that Kevin and Chad will meet again (not necessarily date) in season 2.

I came here looking for a B&S thread a while ago and couldn't find anything. I just assumed that I wasn't able to locate it. I'm suprised that this thread was started only a few days ago, whereas the series is being aired in the US since last year!

In any case - I love B&S!! Great forum here - http://brothersandsisters-tv.com/forums/ (http://brothersandsisters-tv.com/forums/)

Hi Fabienne!

The series is really good! I have digital TV so I have been watching it on 'PRIME One'. I think it also aired on TF1 (dubbed in French... eeew  :o), but season 1 ended and I think it will take a while before they will start with season 2. I will PM you, though.

Other than that I forgot to mention that I really like Ken Olin as an actor but also as a director. I used to watch 'Thirtysomething' 15+ years ago and really liked all the characters (including Peter Frechette who is far too absent from television). I am also happy to see that Ken Olin is teaming up again with David Marshall Grant - an actor I appreciate a lot too.

With that and the fact that I like Ron Rifkin a lot, I think I really have to watch 'Alias' at some point. ..  :D

I recently discovered the website 'AfterElton'. It might be nothing new for many here, but I am really enjoying that site (though I tried to register several times and it just won't work.. :-\). Among other very interesting articles and subjects it has a fun part of episode recaps and some interviews of main actors, executive producers and writers (http://www.afterelton.com/TV/brothersandsisters.html (http://www.afterelton.com/TV/brothersandsisters.html)). But DON'T READ if you don't want major spoilers!!

Peter Frechette - He was the 30-Something college professor, right? Look at the third video that Smellykellyjay posted and you will see him for just a second. It looks as though he was being considered for a part in B&S.

Brothers & Sisters' Luke MacFarlane (Scotty) comes out!!  Way to go Luke!

A commitment to himself
On TV's Brothers & Sisters, Canadian Luke Macfarlane plays a gay man in a serious relationship. In an exclusive interview, the 28-year-old actor talks about his character's trip to the altar, and why he's decided to go public with his own sexuality

From Tuesday's Globe and Mail

April 15, 2008 at 4:12 AM EDT

LOS ANGELES — Next month, in the season finale of his hit television series Brothers & Sisters, Canadian actor Luke Macfarlane will dress his best and say his vows as his character, Scotty Wandell, marries his partner, Kevin Walker.

It's an episode the London, Ont.-born actor is looking forward to, on may levels: It's one of the few shows on network television to portray a gay marriage between two main characters - a feat the 28-year-old actor is quite proud of, from a professional perspective. But the episode also holds personal resonance for Macfarlane, who wants to be married himself some day, and has finally decided to go public with his own sexual orientation.

Though no secret to his family and close friends, Macfarlane has, until now, been guarded about his personal life as a gay man. Over lunch in Los Angeles, where he lives, he initially insists that he has no concerns about his public revelation - but a few seconds later he is shifting nervously in his chair, and concedes that he is "terrified."

"I don't know what will happen professionally ... that is the fear, but I guess I can't really be concerned about what will happen, because it's my truth.

Luke Macfarlane: ‘I can’t really be concerned about what will happen, because it’s my truth.’ (Ann Johansson for The Globe and Mail)

"There is this desire in L.A. to wonder who you are and what's been blaring for me for the last three years is how can I be most authentic to myself - so this is the first time I am speaking about it in this way."

The episode, which started shooting yesterday and will air on May 11 on ABC and Global, is a monumental step in television culture, he says.

"From a standing outside perspective, and also as someone who is gay, I think that it's a very exciting time. How exciting that we're saying, 'This can be part of the cultural fabric, now,' because it is two series regulars, two people that you invite into your home and you see every week. It's telling of the beginning of more waves and I'm very proud of that."He does, however, note that a certain irony still exists: While a show featuring a gay marriage may be an important step toward building tolerance, it's still an attention-grabber in today's television world.

"Most importantly, in portraying gay people, the more we realize it's just like portraying anybody else and, gay marriage, it's not about two people being gay, it's about two people who love each other and who have decided to commit to each other for the exact same reasons any other couple would get married. Hopefully, the more that becomes part of the cultural awareness it won't be," he pauses and says, employing a mock, exaggerated voice of a television announcer, "a spectacular Sunday episode."

Sitting on the patio of an exclusive Hollywood hotel, wearing a grey T-shirt and red jacket, Macfarlane says he does intend to keep a certain amount of his life private. Asked if he is currently in a relationship, his answer is quick: "That is my personal life. That is where I draw the difference." He does allow though, that he would like to be married some day.

Macfarlane's road to Hollywood was relatively smooth, and mostly free of bit parts and day jobs most struggling actors undergo. Growing up with two sisters (one of which is his fraternal twin), he attended London Central Secondary School, where he was interested in maths and sciences, briefly toiling with the thought of following in his father's footsteps and becoming a doctor. He spent his summers in Cedar Springs, Ont., exploring the wilderness with friends. At Lester B. Pearson School For The Arts, Macfarlane decided to change his course.

"I was in a band when I was in high school and I was bitten by the performance bug, if anything else. I had this notion that maybe I wanted to be an actor. ... I thought it might be a neat career. I thought if I was going to try that, I should shoot for the best and I auditioned for Julliard.

"I was the only Canadian at Juilliard at the time," he says. "When you go somewhere different, you immediately have to determine yourself ... everyone made fun of me because I was like, 'I am Canadian' and it was a way to create my identity through separation, which I think a lot of Canadians do. There's a kind of integrity to being an observer of a culture. I think Canadians have that privilege innately. We are like the observers of the American culture."

Barely out of Juilliard, he was cast in off-Broadway plays, the Robert Altman miniseries Tanner on Tanner, the 2004 film Kinsey and a starring role in the 2005 Steven Bochco television series Over There. It was his stint in theatre that landed him his current television role - Brothers & Sisters creator Jon Robin Baitz saw Macfarlane on stage in the show Where Do We Live, and asked him to play Scotty Wandell, originally a guest-starring role which grew into a regular part.

"Roles tend to pick me. That's sort of where I am in my career. I've always been very lucky, especially in TV, which is something that really interests me. ... I don't turn my nose up at it like a lot of people do. There are very few things that 13 million people tune in to witness, so television is a really relevant and powerful thing."

Though he will soon be seen in the CBC miniseries Iron Road alongside Peter O'Toole and Sam Neill, Macfarlane, has little free time to pursue other roles at the moment. "[ABC] bought and paid for me as a series regular," he says with a smile, "so I will be there for a long, long time."

So Scotty really is gay.  How cool, I hope nothing but good comes to him for coming out.

This is one of my favorite shows too.  The first season Kevin's romance was with an actor who was in the closet, and the big roadblock to their relationship was that the actor didn't want people to know that he was gay.

The writers of this show have a BLOG.  I left a message on it that I was tired of gay romances where the main problem the guys faced was that they were gay.  I dared them to give Kevin a real romance with real problems.  And God bless them, this season they did it!

Well he's not alone anymore, that's for sure.  Many actors on tv seem to be coming out as of late. Of course,  Neil Patrick Harris and David Hyde Pierce already have established themselves moreso then Luke MacFarlane.  Best of luck to him.

Kevin and Scotty are getting married tonight in prime time.

OK, it's only a committment ceremony.  That's as close as we come to gay marriage in California.

But it's happenning in Primetime and hopefully more people will see that the idea is not that unusual and we're not kidding when we say we want to be able to get married.  What a great way to end the season!  ;D

According to spywitnesses, the pair first avoided being photographed together, but eventually walked down the street together with a smile.

Wentworth, 35, and Luke, 27, started their day off together by visiting printing store Kinko’s, where the Prison Break star surfed the web.

Afterwards the pair grabbed some drinks from Starbucks and headed to a small art gallery in Culver City. Finally, Went and Luke went to the In-N-Out Burger drive-thru and called it a day.

MacFarlane is the ex-boyfriend of Grey’s Anatomy star TR Knight.

Love and marriage, love and marriage,
Go together like a horse and carriage.
This I tell ya, brother, you can't have one without the other.

Love and marriage, love and marriage,
It's an institute you can't disparage.
Ask the local gentry and they will say it's elementary.

Try, try, try to separate them, it's an illusion.
Try, try, try and you only come to this conclusion:

Love and marriage, love and marriage,
Go together like a horse and carriage.
Dad was told by mother you can't have one
You can't have none.
You can't have one without the other.

Try, try, try to separate them, it's an illusion.

Thanks for posting all of this wonderful stuff!!

My favorite part of the episode concerned Scotty's parents.

They refused to come to the ceremony.

Unbeknownst to Scotty, instead of having a bachelor party, Kevin and his brothers drive to Arizona to try to persuade Scotty's parents to come, because Kevin knows how much it would mean to Scotty if they did.

Scotty's mother is adamant and refuses, but Scotty's father gives Kevin the cufflinks he wore at his own wedding to take back to Scotty.  He had promised Scotty that he could wear them when he got married.

It was a very poignant, very sweet touch.

More timely today, perhaps, than we knew--

Brothers and Sisters

The music in the backgound during the proposal scene is Warm Whispers by Melbourne born and bred Missy Higgins, a gay (or certainly bisexual) woman.  Enjoy.

Missy Higgins

from Wikipedia:

Higgins, the youngest of three children of a doctor and a childcare centre operator, was raised in Melbourne, Victoria and attended Geelong Grammar School for her secondary education. She currently lives with her sister Nicola in Melbourne.

She is a vegetarian, and in 2005 appeared in a marketing campaign for the animal rights group PETA promoting awareness of animal rights.

Higgins' sexuality was the subject of speculation due to the content of her lyrics; she does not use male or female pronouns to describe her partner during her concerts. In an interview with lesbian magazine Cherrie, under the headline "Missy Higgins on life, music and not being straight", when asked if she falls under the 'moniker' of ‘not-so-straight’ girls, she laughed and said, "Um, yeah, definitely". She then went on to say "I think sexuality is a fluid thing and it's becoming increasingly more acceptable to admit that you're that way", without elaborating on whether she is lesbian, bisexual, or otherwise. As a result of press coverage, she clarified her statement and said, "I’ve been in relationships with both men and women so I guess I fall most easily under the category 'bisexual'."That second statement, which appeared on her MySpace page, stated outright that she is "not, never have been, and never will be ashamed" of her sexuality. She also criticized the media for what she termed "twisting her words around".

Higgins said recently in an interview on Channel V that her single "Ten Days" was written for her then boyfriend while she was backpacking in Europe for six months after she finished school. She is currently single and states that she has not been in a relationship for a long time, citing her busy schedule as a reason.

I love love love this show! And the above scene must be one of the most heartwrenching scenes in recent episodes! If you haven't seen prior episodes, this scene gives away spoilers!! Be warned!

I am not a big Scotty fan, but among my favourite characters is Kevin, so it's okay. Among the other of my favourites are Saul! Ron Rifkin is absolutely brilliant! I am looking forward to the next season, where we'll see more of Saul and his life.

Hope so! And I hope Uncle Saul leaves regret behind and learns....well, we'll see, won't we?

Cheers!

We shall see! [no spoilers ahead]  In a recent interview with two of the show's writers (Ken Olin and David Marshall Grant) they said that Kevin, Scotty and Saul will be front and center in future plot developments.

Both writers are comparing Brothers & Sisters and Thirtysomething from almost 20 years ago (both were then actors in the show and David Marshall Grant played a gay character which at the time was quite revolutionary - read for yourself. I loved watching Thirtysomething back then!).

Thank you for a wonderful, wonderful article!

I am sending it to all of my friends--here is just a small sample:

From thirtysomething to Brothers & Sisters

Olin says he’s constantly reminded just how revolutionary the show is when it comes to its gay characters. For example, the show’s the most recent episode (that aired on May 4) was originally supposed to end with a scene of Sally Field as matriarch Nora Walker. But when episode director Michael Morris was editing the scenes, he decided the scene with Kevin proposing to Scotty was more powerful, so he switched the last two scenes, resulting in the proposal being the last thing the viewer sees before the end credits.

“It’s an extraordinary scene,” Olin says, “the most romantic scene we’ve ever done on the show.”

After it was edited, he called Berlanti’s attention to the scene switch. “I said, ‘I just want you to know, Greg, from a very mercenary point-of-view, we are ending the episode on a very romantic moment between these two men.’ And Greg said, ‘You know what? If it were a man and a woman, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.’ And I said, ‘No, we wouldn’t.’ And we both said, ‘That’s the way we’re going to keep it.’”

David Marshall Grant also gives credit for the revolutionary nature of the show’s gay storylines to Berlanti. “He’s been responsible for the vast majority of the stories on Brothers & Sisters,” he says. “He’s just brilliant at organizing and structuring story.”

Once Berlanti outlines the storylines, two writers are assigned per episode. “But we have very empowering showrunners, and so you really get a sense that it was your script when all is said and done.”

Kevin and Scotty’s wedding has been part of the plan for a while, Grant says, though the writers’ strike earlier this year, which resulted in fewer episodes this season, meant that the storylines had to be told in an abbreviated way. Ironically, he says, the rushed schedule worked dramatically, with Kevin’s sudden proposal to Scotty being more unexpected than if they had built up to it over episode after episode.

How did Kevin end up with Scotty and not Jason, a previous love interest? “As season two evolved, it was clear,” Grant says. “So we really felt that [a wedding] was the best way to close the season.”

Grant points to another revolutionary “gay” element in Brothers & Sisters: the character of Saul, a closeted older man, played by Ron Rifkin, who finally admitted to Kevin in the wedding proposal episode that he is, in fact, gay.

“I mean, good grief, how many shows are doing this, a sixty-something year-old man just came out!” Grant says. “I think it’s just great that ABC is letting us do these stories.”

I like "Brothers and Sisters." I think I would even like it better if I watched it more often and more closely. It seems that way too with "Ugly Betty" and "Desparate Housewifes." I never realized until I watched it one night that "Desparate Housewifes" has a big comedy element to it. So does "Ugly Betty." But I do know for sure that "Brothers and Sisters" is a good show. I like several of the actors and actresses on it too. I have always like Sally Field.

Very true, though I keep preferring Jason to Scotty, even Chad. But Scotty is growing on me... slowly...

I don't quite get your Martian comment...  :-\ :D

[Possible minor spoilers] I do watch YouTube clips of the episodes I haven't seen yet (I'll never learn from my mistakes... ) but I was only able to watch the entire episode of "Compromises" yesterday on TV (I taped it last week - we have the second season airing on PRIME - digital channel) and I thought it was FABULOUS  ;D ! Almost all stories great! I wasn't too keen on Kitty and the kids and the story about Rebecca maybe having a new dad etc, but the Kevin/Sarah/Scotty, Nora/Isaac, Saul and Robert/Jason scenes were fantastic! I did miss Tommy, though!

I really really love Saul's character! But I think I've mentioned that already...  ;D

Ha! Love it!

New York Magazine's weekly "Approval Matrix" gives the imprimatur to:

"Brothers & Sisters' gay wedding, probably the most realistic in pop-culture history."

Yay!

(Ok, it's in the "Lowbrow" Quadrant, but utterly towards the "Brilliant" edge--scroll to the right if it gets obscured).

Just wanted to share my disappointment that ABC canceled "Brothers & Sisters", but I'm a happy person because I met both, Luke Macfarlane and Matthew Rhys in June!

Went to New York for a long week-end ( 8)) to go see "The Normal Heart" and met Luke after the play. Then a week later I was in Cardiff/Wales where I had registered to attend a Fundraiser Event at which Matthew Rhys was interviewed. He then mingled with the crowd/fans. Very kind, sweet and funny man!

Follow his Twitter fan page - @WelshManRhys

Am in London tomorrow for the NOH8 photo shoot!

Hope you're all fine!
