Title: New Greenlea Tale: The Rookie
Post by: louisev on December 16, 2007, 04:26:07 pm
Yes believe it, I finally started a new Greenlea story.

The Rookie

http://louisev.livejournal.com/236331.html#cutid1  Chapter 1

Since there seem to be two camps of readers, the Dupree camp and the Ellery camp, I decided I was going to satisfy both - so it will contain all of our major characters and not choose between them.

And it's a great start, Louise. Thanks for the early Christmas present!

I don't do this very often, but this definitely rates a

SQUEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

Awesome start to the story, Louise!  You never lose your touch.  I love seeing the boys in action.

Count me as having one foot firmly in both camps (all the camps, really).  I love all the Greenlea boys.

There's a foot of snow outside and it's freezing cold ....but now I'm having a great day!   :D

Thanks,
Marie

thanks, Marie!

I wasn't sure if I was going to get the ol Muse back or not, and it is just as much of a surprise to me as it is to you that here I am working on a story I had no inkling of previously.  It has a little of the old, and a little of the new in it, just enough to keep everybody guessing!

and here is the next chapter!

The Rookie, Chapter 2

This is great, just like the old days....waiting for multiple chapters in one day. Thanks, Louise!

Yes, Marie, we have a foot of snow too, it's effing freezin as Ellery would say, and I am warm and toasty with The Rookie...

I have felt very bad about not giving anyone any new stories, and it is really enjoyable to see so many folks popping up gleefully to read the little start I have going here on 'The Rookie.'

Yep, these boys are great warmer-uppers.   :)

SPOILERS

Are you sure you're not a lawyer, Louise?   ;)  That was excellent.  What a fascinating (and awful) web of corruption in Greenlea County.  Effin' Amos - but he's got some bargaining power and he knows it.

Poor Dupree, being put in the middle of Ellery and Paula - but it shows just how highly Wes thinks of him.  Wow - Ellery was in rare form, but good on Paula for holding her own with him.  I think Ellery needs a spankin'   ;D

And we see, once again, why Wes is the Sheriff and our Fearless Leader.

Thanks!

I like to think I was a lawyer in another life.   ::)

thanks for the comments, Marie, it instils confidence that at least I sound like I know what I'm talking about.

And you knew we couldn't see the last of Amos Marigold or that little troublemaker Leon - right?

Hey-I thought Christmas was next week!!! I told my husband I've been a good girl but he wasn't agreeing. Now I've got proof. What a terrific present! I thought I was hallucinating when I saw you pop up on my friend's page Louise! (Chapter 3 already to boot.) And I am with Marie-I love all those Greenlea guys, although I do lean more towards E&C (Hugh-Yum!)

So yes I am squeeing here & getting ready to ignore Mt Laundry again in favor of a much needed slash fix.

Thank you so much Louise!

Well, this certainly puts a smile on my face!!

It's 7.30 am here and I have to go to work in about half an hour... :-\... oh, heck, I think I can get 'distracted' for one hour today, just like Leslie!

Yep - still smiling :)

SPOILERS

OMG - I know we've said it before, but Ellery is priceless.  He is absolutely one of the most fascinating, complex and intriguing characters I've ever experienced.  And I think those words apply to the Wes/Ellery relationship also.  I love watching these two interact - beneath all the sassing and the grumbling and the lecturing, there is such a deep bond of love and respect between them.  Ellery needs someone to call him on his b.s. - and Wes never fails!

Which brings us to the equally fascinating Ellery/Dupreee dynamic - made all the more complicated when they're discussing Paula.  LOL!

And I'm more convinced than ever that Ellery needs that spankin'!

Thanks,
Marie

I agree Marie, a spanking and less cafeïne!  ;)  ::)

I thought Mel's intervention was sobering though. He really put Ellery's anger towards the whole Amos mess in perspective. The way Ellery was carrying on, it was as if he was the only one frustrated and upset about the new turn of events. Good thing that Wes and Mel are keeping their heads cool.

I hope some of Ellery's foul mood (Colson once called it a 'cranky ass mood'   ) wears off by the time he get home...

Great stuff Louise! As Ellery said 'it never gets old'! Yeehaw.
Title: Re: New Greenlea Tale: The Rookie

I dunno-I suggested a spankin', but if he gives Colson half the shit he's giving everyone else so far-he may end up bound & gagged too, sweethearts!! (Sorry-couldn't resist!)

But I agree Marie, I love the interaction between Wes/Ellery & Dupree/Ellery so much too. Ellery is high maintenance for sure, but Wes keeps him in line & I think he is trying to teach Dupree how to run interference when he can't be there.

Ellery does need to seriously cool it over this Amos thing though so he doesn't jeopardize landing those big fish. He needs to realize that that's the best way to get justice for Colson & the others is to get the ringleaders. Not to mention the political implications for Mel & Wes.

Yes, Fabienne - an excellent observation about Mel.  Sobering and perspective are exactly the right words. I was very impressed with how Mel handled that conversation - and I think it had an impact on Ellery, too.

Louise, being with these boys again is wonderful.  Seeing Ellery home with Colson and Jeremy home with Nick - makes me believe that all is right with the world.  Nope - that briefcase won't be opened tonight.  Naughty Ellery has to get that half of what we asked for first!   ;D

I really liked seeing Jeremy running his thoughts by Nick.  Their relationship seems to be maturing very nicely, and I think college will prove to be a good choice for Nicky, who has a smart brain to go with that smart mouth.  These two are so sweet together - "big college words!"  LOL!

Thanks, Louise!

I love how everyone is in Ellery's business about that coffee though! And Jeremy had to bust Ellery's stones with Wes about gettin' his licks from Colson. (Poor Wes-he's so tolerant but he's always walking into the middle of these uncomfortable conversations!)

Thanks Louise -these chapters were a great stress reliever after fighting evil Holiday Mall crowds tonight! (Bah Humbug.  >:()

Well for better or for worse I'm not taking any medicine, and I an enjoying the positive pleasure of having my readers loyally back following the new story even if it is low on naughtiness!

And the good news for all of you is that next week I have two days off for the holiday and the following week for New Year"s Eve and New Year's day so I should have plenty of time to write as well.  Life has finally settled down enough to permit me to think about things like crime plots and creepy Amos Marigold.

Ellery and Dupree make a great team at work.  I can't wait to see Ellery "using his discretion" with that snake Amos.

It was great seeing Jeremy get official word on his well-deserved promotion.  It made me all gooey when his immediate reaction was to call Nick  (and out loud to Wes!).  Sweet Thing is the perfect nickname for him-he's so effin' adorable I can hardly stand it.

Thanks for the bonus, Louise.  You're a doll!

well, I'm not doing away with a lot of the explicit scenes lightly... it mainly has to do with maintaining the tone of the story, and I find that the tone changes a lot when there is an intimate scene, which works well sometimes but doesn't work as well when it"s more frequent!

at least that is how it feels to me.

Uh Oh - dizziness is not a good thing.  But it did get Ellery to the doctor tout de suite, so maybe he needed that physical manifestation of his high blood pressure in order for him to take it as seriously as he needs to.  And our newly promoted Detective Sweet Thing will get a chance to do some of that investigating that he's so good at.  Daddy Grey will be home soon and I'm betting a nice brisk walk is in Ellery's very near future.

I'm having a great time with this story, Louise!  Thanks.

And another great chapter, Louise.  It's so sweet that Ellery and Colson both grumble when they're the "patient" but isn't it wonderful that they are there to spoil each other.

I love how Nicky wasn't bothered that Jeremy wasn't in the mood and how they brainstormed together - it's evident they have such respect for each other.  All A's for Nick?  Way to go - I can't say I'm surprised - there's a lot of depth to that naughty boy!

Thanks!

Everyday stuff boring?

Heck,  I could read about Dupree and Nicky doing laundry.  Of course in my mind they would be naked of course...   LOL.

David!  You're still reading too!  Yay! I was just thinking about you yesterday.  Okay, I will keep the naked laundry in mind. You have always given me such great ideas!  Stay tuned for a chapter in a little while!

Ha!  I was going to say I could read about them going grocery shopping, but that laundry idea sounds good!  ;D

Actually, I'd be interested to see how the Dupree/Sampson household divides household duties.  From what we saw in the last story, Nicky appears to be a pretty good cook, and I think it would be sweet to see them shopping together.

Fabienne is right - it could never be boring!

SPOILERS

A trip to Yuma sounds like a good idea, and from what we've seen in the past, Jeremy is an excellent interrogator.

Yeah, I'm sure Paula is still smarting over the Dupree date debacle (not to mention her crush on Ellery), but it also looks like she thinks the sheriff's department is not sharing information with her.....I wonder if she'll run into Wes at the D.A.'s office....

Ellery is never going to be a person who can simply sit and relax, it's just not in him.  It would be great if he and Colson could go riding together - it's been a long time and I'll bet Milli misses him!

Some interesting developments!  Thanks.

http://louisev.livejournal.com/238803.html

Ha!  Well, my Christmas shopping officially ended Saturday night, and I'm now in the cooking/baking frenzy stage of holiday fun, but there's always time to read!

SPOILERS

I never got no money from Amos Marigold. He came by once over ta Sammy’s – I don’t know what for, I thought we was gettin rousted, but Sammy talked to em. He didn’t stay long.”

Ahh...verrrry interesting!  The plot does indeed thicken.

“Well, that’s what I’m thinkin about right now. What I should be doin if my time is runnin out.”

Gah....don't talk like that Ellery! But....I'm curious, as always, to see what is going on in that brilliant, fascinating mind of his!  The dialogue between Ellery and Colson is always so.....right and true and real.  Amazing.

I hope you have a wonderful Christmas, Louise!  You've given me a fantastic present with this story. Thank you.

Taking a break from last minute wrapping to catch up & it appears that Ellery feels he is at a crossroad in his life. I love the fact that you have them having this conversation on horseback, Louise. It just feels right. No guesses as to what is going on in the Chief Deputy's brain but I hope he doesn't make any rash choices quite yet. Lack of things to do can become stressful too. But I don't know how much more of an "I can croak at any minute" conversation Colson can take before his own fears of losing Ellery like he did Adam will pop up & cause him to brood.

On the positive side, I'm happy to see Ellery is seeking Colson out to talk things over, because in the past he has been known to not be so open & honest with Colson over things like his health.

I'm not commenting on the Lang situation because unlike Dupree, I am a terrible detective & don't know what's up with Amos & that money. I'm intigued though & enjoying how that part of the story is playing out. Ok-back to last minute holiday preps!

Merry Christmas to all my fellow Greenlea lovers & especially to my favorite Storytellin' Santa Louise!!

Thanks for the Christmas chapter & message! I am so happy to hear about the bright future for the citizens & readers of Greenlea! I hope I can some day own a published copy of this saga.

Now, I am a little miffed at Ellery for not including me in that private conversation with Colson but he did invite me into the bedroom in Chapter 12, so I guess I'll forgive him & his sexy ass this time!!

Hope you had a great Christmas!

Good to know, Louise.  Ellery's mind is a fascinating place!

SPOILERS

Has Jeremy already resigned his part-time job at the bar since he got the promotion?  He'll be hard to replace!  I like the way he handles frisky Nicky - firm but playful.  And they both crack me up:

Nick grabbed a handful of Jeremy’s ass and squeezed. “I want ta head inta the breach, cause you got the best breach in town.”

“I am so glad you ain’t studyin literature, you’d be downright dangerous. Now lemme go do my job, I’ll be home as soon as I can.”

I can see where Sanchez's remarks irritated Jeremy, and I think it's cute he's so protective of his Chief Deputy Legs, as Nicky would say. Now I'm wondering, when will Elllery return?  Thanks, Louise!

and yes to answer your question, somewhere in there from the end of the last story in sequence (which I believe was A Small Circle of Friends) Nick has started college and Jeremy is devoting himself entirely to police duty and we may get a chance to meet the new bouncer at the bar.  Whose name I had earlier today and now I've forgotten it!

Great timing, Louise!

SPOILERS

Aww, poor Ellery.  I understand how he feels, and I think it's a natural reaction to his father dying so young, and everything else that's been happening.  We all go through those "doom and gloom" periods to a certain extent from time to time.  I think letting off some steam to Wes about Amos is a good idea.

But I was alarmed to learn that all this time Bill has been listed as a beneficiary in Ellery's Will! Yikes!  He needs to see his attorney right after his doctor's appointment tomorrow and get that changed ASAP!  And while he's there he and Colson need some Power of Attorney papers drawn up, too!

I'm glad to learn that a trip to Puerto Rico seems to be in their future!  :)  Great stuff, Louise!

Thanks,
Marie

Yea Marie, I had a Yikes moment over effing Bill still being in Ellery's will. I remember Ellery mentioning adding Colson to financial things way back in one of the early books, but then all hell broke loose & I guess he didn't get around to it. And although it's all depressing to think of, a POA is a must, especially since they have no legal rights as a couple.

I also hope that Ellery doesn't decide to keep things from Colson so he doesn't get scared. I don't think Colson meant he wants Ellery to hide things from him.

And I know Colson is afraid of flying but damn, Puerto Rico will be a blast, but with Wes & Edna there, Colson may not want to practice new binding techniques on Ellery!!!

Thanks again for a great story,
Fran

SPOILERS

I hope Ellery takes Dr. Sampson's advice seriously.  If memory serves, he has a can of that protein shake somewhere in his kitchen from the last time he was told to gain weight!  I'd love to drink a milkshake every night!  LOL!

“Oh, that reminds me. Yer father in law says good job on yer promotion. He wanted me ta know how pleased he was.”

I love that!  And I love Jeremy's reaction - he's too cute.  But I'm glad Dr. Sampson seems to have a high opinion of Jeremy - he should.  And Jeremy is a good influence on Nick - and Nick is a bad-in-a-good-way influence on Jeremy!

So now we're about to come full circle back to Chapter 1!  I wonder what Leon will have to say....

Great job, Louise!  Thanks.
Marie

P.S.  If Ellery doesn't pay a visit to his attorney soon, I'm going to start drafting his Will and POAs myself!  ;D

Ha!  You've got a point there, Fabienne.  Maybe Ellery better stick with Stew - at least he won't be drooling all over the paperwork!    ;D

SPOILERS

Now we see how Leon ends up at the Lang's - but why?  A very elusive money trail!  I like that Ellery was as matter-of-fact about Sanchez sniffing around his case as Wes was - they've both been around long enough to understand office politics.

Everytime someone stops and makes a phone call or there's talk about calling home, I have to adjust my thinking to the 80's - no cell phones! (or at least none as we know them today).  Poor Colson's been so worried and little wonder.

“What is that stuff? Looks like somethin the old folks take for constipation,” Wes asked.

LOL!  Good going, Wes - that'll make Ellery drink it, for sure!

And there's going to be hair combing?  Where's Leslie?   :D

Thanks for #16 and the bonus #17, Louise!

“Just like Edna, I told ya,” Wes said, and Colson shot him a look.

LOL!  I think Colson liked being compared to Edna as much as Ellery liked being called Wes's "prize stallion!"

Just where is this $50,000?  They do seem to be on to something with the blackmailing theory, especially in light of those rather illuminating pictures of Amos!

It's not every day you hear two people react so unenthusiastically about being left millions of dollars.  Quite touching, actually.  Perhaps Stew will suggest a philanthropic foundation of some kind and/or an endowment to an existing institution or organization in addition to Ellery's bequests to Colson and Wes.  Lord knows there's enough to spread around!  LOL!

And I'm glad to hear Wes keep pushing the island vacation idea!  Thanks, Louise!

I like that idea.

And I love Colson taking care of his man (Wes is right, just like Edna!  :)) even though he's still angry with him. So, Wes, not too much talking about that holiday, okay? The boys have got some hair combing and making up to do!  8)

Thanks Louise. These regular updates are just fantastic.

Taking a break from "un-decorating," and look what I find!  :)

SPOILERS

It was nice to see that Ellery is beginning to appreciate Paula more.  Interesting that Amos gives details about the money being "in hundreds" and in a "brown leather bag."  But that doesn't tell us where the money came from or where it is - and why is Amos so certain that the money would still be at Lang's mother's house?  Hmmmm...more bits and pieces to ponder.

Ellery having another dizzy spell scared me! The entire Amos/Brotherhood matter is understandably not just another case to him.  I'm glad he had Jeremy call Colson, though (hugs Colson - he must've been beside himself).   But, OMG, Louise - why should I be surprised when you surprise me?  I love the idea of Ellery and the relaxation tapes! LOL!  The mind (and especially Ellery's) is a powerful thing, indeed!

Great chapter, Louise!  Thanks.

Really?

The thing I was worried about reading the beginning of the saga was the fact that Ellery was taking medication and drinking. But the drinking itself? That fitted with how Ellery was at the beginning of the story.

I have to laugh when I think of what Colson's reaction might be to some of those "new age mumbo jumbo" techniques!! He's gonna want to be supportive but he's about the most opposite of "new age" that anyone can be!

But-Ellery gets a gold star in my book for not only making sure Colson knew he was back at the Doctor's but asking him to come right away. (Good boy!!)

IMO Ellery has Amos Agita & definitely needs to learn how to control it. Amos is not worth a stroke or a heart attack!

Also looking forward to meeting the new staff at the bar.  This has to be a first for the Red Stallion - a barmaid and her boyfriend!  That should prove interesting!

Did someone say handcuffs and ping pong paddle?   ;D  Not exactly "new age mumbo jumbo" - but a sure-fire stress reliever!  Great stuff, Louise.  Thanks!

Poor Lauren. Wayne is like some black cloud that brings misfortune with him! He pops in to The Red Stallion & all

hell breaks loose within minutes! (And Mary the waitress needs to rethink her career choice if she thinks she won't

be hearing guys in a gay bar talking graphically about sex!) Nice to see the bar is the usual chaotic place.

I think Ellery is going to need to find an available mountaintop in Tibet to get that meditation time in. A fun update.

Yeah, Fran, I was thinking the same thing.  Her ears and Wayne's mouth are not a good fit!     It was great to be back at the bar though.  I've missed Lauren (and even Wayne!).

Yes, Puerto Rico is sounding better and better for Ellery and his need for relaxation.  Colson isn't supposed to act as a bouncer, Ellery is supposed to be meditating - what to do?  Uh oh - I'm wondering now if Ellery will make an emergency to call to Jeremy just as he and Nick are looking forward to a Friday night free from the bar?

I agree that was a lot of fun!  Thanks!

I wonder if Ellery is sometimes sorry he got the answering machine...but,then, I suppose they'd just have people barging in like they used to!

There's nothing better than some Ellery-Colson banter.  These two can talk about everything and nothing, and make it so damn entertaining!  I love how Ellery is always giving Colson the inside scoop on gay life in Hollywood! LOL!  I have to agree with Colson - John Wayne is kind of irritating, isn't he?  And oddly devoid of any sex appeal at all.  My favorite line:

“Ow!” Colson flinched. “Yer pullin my leg hairs out by the roots, cut that out.”

LOL!  Nobody does dialogue like you, Louise!

I'm glad Jeremy and Nick don't have an answering machine!  And I hope Ellery and Colson can get through the movie without any more emergencies, so they can get to "doin the nasty" and the tying up stuff Ellery mentioned.   ;D

You've said it all Marie.

I was thinking of those 'Bill days' as I was reading about Colson's growing irritation. It made me think of that line in Taking Chances when there was a knock at the door or the phone was ringing (I forgot which) and Ellery said to Colson 'You didn't know you were coming to visit Grand Central Station, did ya?' (quoting off the top of my head here, didn't check the story).

I love the fact that Ellery lets the answering machine take the call & then immediately has to listen to the message while Colson glares at him! Ellery's got the dough- he needs to hire a GM for that bar & have them be on on call or something instead of him.

“Kick thirty guys out a the bar an tell em ta go home,” Colson said, his voice cold.  Yeah Colson-problem solved!! No tact necessary!

And I don't think that Jeremy & Nick even heard the phone ringing-they had it unplugged from the wall while they were gettin' busy!

And speaking of gettin' busy-I had to laugh at the reference to the "Bill days" & Colson staring at the phone at the end & choosing the movie over gettin' fancy in case it rang again. (We know how much Colson hates interruptions!)

Thanks Louise!

Colson is such a bad boy- never let it be said he doesn't take advantage of a prime opportunity to get fancy (& he sure knows that his man can be convinced-even under the circumstances.

And what's up with Jeremy?? Why so nervous? Is he still crushing on his boss?? Nick might get a little jealous!

I loved Ellery threatening Colson with no sugar & Colson laughing it off as the empty threat it was!!

Well, I guess it's no surprise that Marie and Claude have quit. They really didn't seem right for the job either. But, boy, will the bar and it's employees ever stop being such a worry for Ellery? I can understand Colson saying that he should just close for the night, but Ellery's right, it doesn't work that way. I liked the statement about 'my own kind'  :)

And frankly, I'm a bit surprised that Ellery is in a relatively good mood after the disastrous handcuff session! Remember last time Colson left Ellery tied on the bed? Maybe he's just getting used to it! LOL

And I wonder what Wes's reaction will be when he sees the mark on Ellery's arm. He will notice it of course  ::) Or are we in for another Vaseline-moment for Edna??  :o

Thanks for the update Louise!  :)

Or are we in for another Vaseline-moment for Edna??  :o

  Too funny, Fabienne!  But, oddly enough, I think Wes might be more uncomfortable with a "Vaseline" moment than Edna was!  LOL!

“Then he’ll make me stay home Monday an meditate with that fuckin tape.”

Yeah, I can see that tape's working wonders already, Ellery.

And Jeeves has another new man?  Do tell! Poor Lance - I'm glad he and Jeeves are friends; can't have too many of those.  I wonder how he'll feel to be back at the bar?

Ellery in a sweater - yum!  Can't wait for more!

same old same old Louise. Another rehashing of the evils of writing a MO!Ennis fic! Sacrilege!! Every time someone attempts to write one it gets attacked. But, it's because of those "discussions" over on DC I heard about Laramie & took the time to track you down so I could read it for myself, so I'm glad you keep popping up over there. I had to laugh at the choice of scene discussed there though-still sounded hot to me!! I hope there are some new readers that give you a try because of that.

you want to know what is ironic about that particular scene in that particular story?

It took place about halfway through the fifth volume.  Which seems to imply that the person had read a WHOLE LOT OF THE STORY before being turned off by that scene.  And I find that somewhat amusing.  If the reader didn't like the premise of Ennis finding a new lover then why are they still reading half a million words later?  I would have dropped it on page 50 or something.

They are still talking about your previous version over on DCF?  Do they have a life?  I think there's only one MO!Ennis story approved by them - the one which made Jack a saint to let Ennis moved on.

Yay for a bonus chapter!  Gotta love feisty Edna.  We got a "Hell no" and a "she can just suck eggs.." out of her tonight!  LOL!

I've been wanting to see Ellery and Colson and Jeremy and Nick get together socially - but those two couples along with both sets of "parents" - that would be an interesting evening, to say the least!

And I had to believe we were going to hear:

“I probably didn’t need ta know that.”

out of Wes sometime during the night! LOL!  But, Wes's concerns were also kind of touching and very fatherly.  He wasn't just being nosy, he truly wanted to make sure his boy is ok.  Nicely done, Louise!

Judging from the page hits, I would say that the recent silliness hit the right note with everyone.  I thought for quite a while this summer and fall about what I wanted to write, if I was going to write more in the Greenlea universe, and if I did, what would be pleasing for both me, as a writer, and to you as readers.

Because one thing I noticed was that while meaningful to me, and popular among the readers, the serious, heavy-duty story lines in the first five novels is something that I was not sure I could sustain or go back to.  And that is part of why there is a much ligher tone in 'The Red Stallion' and 'A Small Circle of Friends.'  I wanted to have new, interesting characters and unexpected social developments and interactions.  And in 'The Rookie' I decided I didnt want to limit it to a couple of main characters, but to involve the larger cast, in a much less 'heavy duty' kind of story arc - the mystery of some missing payoff money.  It isn't that I don't want to write a serious love story anymore, but I did feel like the thing that would be most interesting for me is to watch the relationships of all of the characters play out among one another in a bit more 'normal' context where there aren't guns going off, people disappearing, windows exploding and cars going into ditches in every other chapter.  It's a lot easier to write that way!!!

And you are doing exactly that and more!

SPOILERS - Chapter 31

Yep, the plot thickened considerably with this chapter!  I was happy to see the beginnings of a truce between Paula and Jeremy  - that will makes matters easier all the way around, and I was always sorry to see the understandable awkwardness between them.

I can't say I'm too surprised about Leon.  None of those guys strike me as the type to subscribe to the notion of honor among thieves, after all.  But, we may still have a few surprises in store.

“Ya know they got blueberry an strawberry syrup here, an it is the most disgustin stuff you ever did taste,” Sanchez said, glancing at his watch again.

I'm with Sanchez on this - it's been a long time since I've been in an IHOP, but I do remember that stuff - and it's just wrong! LOL!

And Sanchez really is itching to stay on this case, isn't he?

A nice mix in this chapter, Louise.  I really enjoyed it!

Thanks,
Marie

While I have been terribly distracted this afternoon and evening by the transition of Heath to the realm beyond, I wanted to reassure everyone that I WILL be finishing 'The Rookie' and that I am determined not only to publish 'Taking Chances' but ot convert and to publish the rest of the Greenlea tales.

At this point, I am a little dizzy and disoriented, like I imagine many of you are, with the news of Heath's passing, but I wanted to reassure you that Ellery and Colson ARENT GOING ANYWHERE (except maybe to Puerto Rico.)  I hope that for those of you who were worried on this point, the inspiration for these characters may have passed from among us, but the spirit that inspired the work is still going strong, and I intend to continue to write about them.

no worries, Fran.

I think all of us are feeling pretty weird still.  But one thing that was crystallizing in my mind over the course of yesterday's shock and all of the intense discussion with the fans on Bettermost, was that it was important for me to keep pushing to get "Taking Chances" published, to get the rest of the Tales converted to original form, and to carry on the project, because there are too many of us who need to continue and to complete the story that was begun with Annie"s and Ang"s creations of "Brokeback Mountain."

I am doing better today, I hope everyone else is too.  Heath is safe and beyond pain and fear now.

thanks Littlewing.  I asked myself yesterday, while I was sitting here dizzy and disoriented, whether I had the concentration and focus left in me to write in the middle of it about Colson and Ellery, purely inspired by Brokeback and enlivened by Heath's performance of Ennis, and the answer came to me: sure I can.

I went to bed very late last night after writing and posting and talking in chat with other Bettermostians, but I woke up on time this morning and put in a full day and wrote another chapter without being at all tired.  And I know that life will go on.  And so will the Greenlea tales.

I thought I would have trouble writing again.  I think my friends over at the Jack with Ennis thread have lost the will to keep posting.  I hope they'll come around, because writing has become very theraputic for me.  I can't just give it up.  As far as I'm concerned, Heath lives.  He would want us to continue!  Thanks, Louise, for your decision to keep writing.  You have inspired me, and comforted me more than I can say!

I think that is part of what our fan forum is meant to be - a means of comforting and encouraging one another.  I believe part of Heath's mission in the world was to help the gay community and encourage those who saw 'Brokeback' to come out and to add energy to the pursuit of civil rights in America, and I believe that is what our writings will do as well.  There has been too much oppression, for much too long, and it is time that those who cannot be themselves without societal condemnation, have a voice and claim what they are denied.

That is why I write.

Nope, I'm not worried about Colson and Ellery because I know they are in your loving hands, and I'm so grateful for that.  (I'm also a little embarrassed to admit that my emotions are so close to the surface right now that your words brought me to tears, but I feel safe saying that here.)

I think we are all feeling it, more or less.  There is a strong relationship between Heath and his portrayal of Ennis and the genesis of my story that can't be denied.  And because I wrote about the future of Ennis at such length, it may be that these stories conjure Ennis far more than other ones that are more or less about Jack and Ennis together.  We know that Heath's Ennis made his way safely to a future that I spent most of 2006 writing, and in its reworked form, still lives in my imagination.  And in a curious but compelling way, that is a tremendous comfort to me, even though I was the one who wrote it!

Well-my decision to read or not read was taken away when one of my husband's techs accidentally crashed our server & left me internetless all day. Of course, then I was pissed because I was cut off. In the end, it was a good thing though-I have three chapters to catch up on tonite. Ooohhh-Stake Out Night!!

needless to say, with the capture of Leon Sebastian and the impending indictment of Amos Marigold on new charges, I will be wrapping up the plot of "The Rookie" sooner than you think.

The question is, what to write about next.  I know most of you loyal readers have a burning desire for something or other, and while I would like to write the Puerto Rico story, I am not quite sure I have enough background/resources to do it as yet.

I guess that as I head into the final story arc of this story I would like some thoughts as to what comes next, with the understanding that I can do any or all of the suggested ideas if I can visualize them.

Well fi you can,t write the honeymoon story yet....(http://bestsmileys.com/crying/2.gif)
Then how about some more Jeremy and Nick going on a vaction together somewhere? Or Simon and Laureen? ( I can,t remember if you,ve done them already). To be honest with you, even something as seemingly mundane as Colson and Ellerys every day lives is just lovely, with a few naughty bits thrown in of course.  ;)
Whatever you want to write is fine by us, but don,t leave the honeymoon toooooooo long. I have glorious visions of Ellery, (Hugh Jackman,  ;)) in the tinest pair of denim shorts. *sigh*. ;) ;D
And the thought of rubbing suntan lotion on those thighs................. :o :o :o :o :o :o

These last two chapters are terrific.  Are you sure you haven't been hanging around police stations?   ;)

I'm itching to hop on a plane to Tourmaline and bang some heads together because Ellery, Jeremy and Paula are annoying me.

Jeremy is right - Ellery does hate women.  And he enjoys insulting Paula.  And he needs to knock it off.  He is very lucky, I'm not the A.D.A.  ;D

Ellery is right - Jeremy is being a chump.  I'm glad he and Paula have a truce of sorts.  It's better all around if they are pleasant and have a good working relationship, but he's going to send the wrong message if he goes too far with that, or if he tries to apologize or comfort her.  That's not his place.

And Paula.....sheesh.  I know she's (relatively) young.  But for Chrissakes, you can't ever admit that a professional colleague intimidates you!  Going back to the office and complaining to Mel is wrong on so many levels.  She can call her girlfriend (was it Mary?) the next time and bitch all she wants, privately.  But professionally, she has to grow a backbone and let Ellery have it but good the next time he pulls that crap on her.  He's never going to respect her otherwise.

Ahh...I feel better now!   ;D  And I'm dying to hear this Paula/Jeremy phone conversation!  Great job, Louise.

I can tell you what I have been doing, Marie, I have been rereading the brilliant police procedural, 'Looking for Answers.'  Now at the risk of being caught out congratulating myself and kissing myself in the mirror, I have spent several MONTHS editing 'Taking Chances' and have concluded that it really needed the editing that Leslie and I gave it.  But I am working on the first major edit of 'Looking for Answers' and am deeply relieved (as well as delighted) to find it in excellent shape!

Recently I have felt somewhat uncomfortable with the story, particularly in getting point A to meet up with point B, chapter 1 when it finally converged in the present with the back story getting to Leon's arrest.

But now that I am past that point (and editing Looking for Answers) I have felt the path is clear once more and it has been easy and joyful to write again.

thank goodness for that.  I don't know how people who haven't got these creative outlets deal with situations like the death of a favorite actor.

Well, you've said it all Marie. Can I join you on that plane to Tourmaline?  ;D

You know, about Paula growing that backbone, I was thinking, when Ellery was a rookie he had Wes to help him do that (hmmm, not sure 'growing a backbone' ever applied to Ellery, but you know, Wes was there and still is to 'reign him in'  ;D sorry Ellery) and now Ellery is doing the same for Jeremy, looking out for him.

So, who's going to give Paula a hand with this? She clearly needs it.
Title: Re: New Greenlea Tale: The Rookie

I have to smile at the thought of Marie swooping into the police station & knocking some heads together after Sunday's updates.

But I think that all three of them (Ellery/Paula/Jeremy) are going through some growing pains. Each have had major life changes in the past year. (I don't know if we ever heard why Paula left the big city for much smaller Tourmaline, but there must be a story there) They need to find a way to "gel" as a team & start presenting a united front when they are offering plea bargains & planning how they will proceed on these cases. I secretly love seeing them "hash it out" in front of the "perps" but they need to be more professional. I think that with some effort on all their parts they can become a "bitchin"  ;) trio!!

Paula needs to find a way to get Ellery to respect her. He may not "like" women but there are women that he respects (Edna & Carol for sure). Paula's complaining to her boss who then goes to Wes is not the ticket there. What would catch Ellery's attention & make him look past her anatomy & see her as a colleague?? (I, of course, don't have the answer but I'll bet Louise may!!)

And I think that Fabienne is right. Ellery is trying to do for Jeremy what Wes did for him when he was a rookie (& still does!!) But Ellery has such a heavy hand, subtle is not in his vocab!! lol!

Great points, Fabienne and Fran!

Yep, I'm glad Jeremy has Ellery watching his back.  He understands what Jeremy is going through on many different levels.

I like what you said about growing pains, Fran.  So true!  And then there are the "personal" entanglements also (some of which are related to those growing pains).  A complicated set of dynamics, for sure.

As far as Ellery and women - reminds me of what he told Colson once, when Colson reminded him that he liked Edna.  Something about liking a woman when she's serving him food (and, I guess, caring for him in a motherly way).  And, while it's true that Ellery likes and respects Carol, she is his subordinate - and she's accustomed to his smart-ass ways.  And she (as far as we know) doesn't have a secret crush on him.   Needless to say, Paula is never going to be a mother figure to Ellery - LOL! - and she is never going to be his professional subordinate either.  Paula is a whole nother kettle of fish for Ellery, and I find his reactions to her fascinating.   I think it's going to take some attitude adjustments on the part of both Ellery and Paula in how they deal with each other.  I'd like to hear him discuss this with Colson and get his reaction.  And I do hope Paula can get some much-needed advice, too.

Marie

P.S.   Fabienne and Fran - let's all hop on that plane!  Can you imagine the sheriff's office dealing with our "triumvirate"? LOL!

Gee Marie great point-what in the hell does Ellery make of a woman like Paula who is his professional equal?? Can't wink & flirt like she was a waitress or shop clerk & she absolutely isn't a maternal figure either. She's outside the scope of his experience with females! I keep forgetting a woman in Paula's position was still rare in the early 80's.

Now here's Ellery after about 5 minutes in our company "Sweetheart, come & save me!"  ;)

Loved it! It was great watching the rhythm of that phone conversation - both of them "scoring points."  Yep, Paula should have called Ellery and asked for a meeting between the three of them.  And how funny was this:

“So yer sayin this wasn’t a personal call? You really did want ta get this deal worked out?”

Jeremy is sweet - but he needs to learn that sometimes a little bit of guile can be useful.  LOL!  Because he just set himself up for my favorite part:

Not every woman in this town is lying in wait to capture you and rescue you from an evil life of homosexuality, regardless of what your Chief Deputy may fill your head with.”

“He don’t.”

"He don.'t"  Ha!  She almost quoted Ellery word-for-word!  But even though Jeremy can sometimes be guileless, he's very smart.  He has Ellery pegged perfectly.  And he also realizes that his Chief Deputy Legs and the A.D.A. are more alike than either of them know (or would probably care to admit).

First-rate dialogue, as usual, Louise.  Okay, now for Round 2!

Thanks!
Marie

Yes, Marie, fortunately for us and unfortunately for all of them, there WILL be a Round 2 before they get a plea agreement with the sulky little weasel, Leon Sebastian.

Aww, poor Jeremy.  Nothing worse than a head "full a legal shit"  I feel his pain.  LOL!   And poor Nick, too.  He's a smart cookie, our Nicky, and he can read his man like a book.

Well, now I really want to smack some sense into both Ellery and Paula.  The hell with the plea agreement and Amos Marigold - if their b.s. is getting in the way of our baby boys getting some nookie, then this is really serious! LOL!

“Good. I meant it ta be ambiguous so you’ll think about it.”

I love listening to these two.

Thanks, Louise!

Chapter 41

Well the rookie is catching crap from all over the place isn't he? Poor Jeremy-his man is feeling a little jealous & neglected & his boss & the ADA have him caught in the middle of their power struggle. He needs to step back, take a deep breath & really take a stand both personally & professionally or he's gonna end up with no man & Ellery's blood pressure problems himself.

I think Nicky just needs some reassuring & loving & then they need to sit down & talk about the reality of being an police officer's partner. It's not a 9-5 job & Jeremy will be bringing the stresses of the job home with him sometimes. (I personally think that Nick just needs to learn that when Jeremy has had a "bad" day at the office, he needs to meet him at the front door with those non-police issue restraints & get his focus back on what's really important!  ;))

As far as Paula & Ellery go, well I can't wait for that meeting, but that needs to be where Jeremy makes an impression on those two. (I also thinks Jeremy needs to touch base with his buddy Colson soon, that always makes him feel better)

Geez-I have an awful lot to say about things today, don't I? Too much damn coffee I guess....anyway nice look at Jeremy & Nick adjusting to their life together...looking forward to more!

Like Fabienne, I zeroed in on this, too, Fran!  LOL!  And, you know I've been thinking about those very retraints (yes, I am that pathetic) ever since Ellery peeked in the toy drawer and the new ones weren't there.  Maybe Nicky beat Colson to the store and got the last pair!  LOL!

SPOILERS

This was a great conversation between Ellery and Colson.  Everything about it was so real - not only the dialogue, but their little gestures and expressions, as well.  How Colson grunted and chuckled, shook his head slowly, "brandished" his biscuit, studied Ellery quietly.  And I like that we can see how Ellery's mood is now glum and pensive, as opposed to the angry, cavalier attitude he displayed at the office.  He is truly in a quandary about the situation and his own feelings.

But, hey, on the bright side, it appears that Colson did his part to keep the economy of Tourmaline going!  LOL!

Thanks!

To Paula’s surprise, Ellery laughed out loud. “Well touche, boy. You want me ta play nice, I’ll play nice.” And he turned a brilliant smile on Paula. “I am very sorry I insulted yer underwear or whatever ya took it as. Chapter 43

Paula is learning to take what you can get from the Chief Deputy because he is not in any way, shape, or form predictable. I think a little social get together with Ellery/Colson, Jeremy/Nick & Paula/any half way decent straight man she can find in the streets of Tourmaline  ;) would be fun. Paula needs to get more comfortable with alternate lifestyles & I think seeing how Ellery interacts with Colson might help her know how to handle him better (& maybe she can make some new friends in Colson & Nick!)

There are some terrific character dynamics emerging from this storyline-thanks yet again Louise!!

well now everyone has their own ideas about just how much of a pain in the ass Ellery is!

But I suppose, the way I am writing him, he is somewhat in denial about his skills in dealing with women, and trips over his ego repeatedly in trying to actually relate to someone who is his equal.  Good thing he has a steady relationship with Colson because his string of bad choices wasn't entirely the other guy's fault.  It's all part of my ongoing pursuit of making Ellery human despite his unabashed sexiness.

Bingo!!!! Sometimes I want to kiss him, sometimes I want to smack him, and sometimes I want to hold a mirror up to his face- like when he's telling Colson about bossy people who always want to have the upper hand  ::)  Your "ongoing pursuit" is succeeding brilliantly.

I'd love to see Paula develop some friendships -  but I'm not so sure about Colson and Nick fitting the bill.  They may not have Ellery's women issues, but they definitely have the same "I know you want my man - but over my dead body are you getting anywhere near him" issues!  LOL!

Good Lord, Ellery!

I'm starting to get an idea why Amos Marigold turned out to be such a s.o.b.,.... maybe he'd been working with pestered by Ellery for too long!  :o  :-\

But, yeah, as Marie said, superbly written. Can't get enough of this.

Sigh.  I do wonder if Ellery will ever learn that he doesn't need to twist the knife once it is firmly in place.

A brilliant portrayal, Louise -  displaying the best parts of his nature to displaying the worst parts of his nature overnight.

...if ya don’t believe me, ya can chat with JEREMY about it...

Wince. Cringe. That's just embarrassing - and not for Paula.   :-\

Btw, that was superbly written, Louise!

Thanks!
Marie

But Marie, twisting the knife is all part of Ellerys charm lol. I think he,s great the way he tells it like it is. He deffinately reminds me of me lol. Now then Louise, not that I,m keeping on and on and on and on or nagging or whinging or just harping on about it generally, but........................TOYS. Next time I look at your LJ, I expect that extra long chapter I keep harping on about, full of begging/pleading noises, you get my drift.

I understand where you're coming from, souxi  :)

But, I actually don't find that part of Ellery charming.  And he's isn't quite telling everything like it is.  My mouth fell open when I realized he hadn't contacted the D.A.'s office after he spoke with Marigold.  To let Paula find out from Marigold's attorney, and then to give that "Oh, any news?" line to Paula at the courthouse?  *shakes head*  I applaud that he was able to get a plea from Marigold, but he was already pretty darn close to crossing the line, and now he's crossed it.  I'm very curious to hear what Wes will have to say - and if Ellery will come clean about exactly what he said to Paula.

And just when I thought the story was winding down to a peaceful conclusion, you've got it cranked up into high gear.  LOL!  Great job, Louise!

Let's not make any mistake here -- Ellery has got several good qualities and several bad ones, and they are making a less than completely effective Chief Deputy out of him.  He has a lot to learn about diplomacy, and about treating A.D.A.'s with respect, and he a flaw in his character that causes him to compete when he should be cooperating.  Paula should be getting his support, rather than having to chase after him and get broadsided by him.  He has a lot of growing up to do, and unless she stands up to him and starts pushing back, without whining to her bosses, he is going to trample her again in the next big case.  This scene was to illustrate Paula's attempt to take Ellery on herself, and to give him a piece of her mind.

But it is fun as hell to write!

I think Paula's learning curve is over now with Ellery & next time she'll be ready. I can't believe she let him get away with calling her sweetheart though, she still hasn't gained his respect. I'm not sure she ever can honestly, but it does make for some fascinating dynamics.

And it's even more fun to read!!!

I agree with Marie here though-this was not one of Ellery's charming moments!!

SPOILERS

Did someone mention fun?  I had so much fun reading that chapter the first time, I read it again right away! LOL!

“I love you like my own son, Ellery, but I can’t have you runnin roughshod over the first decent prosecutor we got servin in this county because you won’t stop throwin sand at her in the sandbox.....

You're almost as smart as you think you are, Ellery - but there are other smart people in Greenlea County, too.  And one of them just gave you an ass-kicking that was long past due.

Paula has a lot of learning to do, too.  And not only about standing up to Ellery.  She needs to get with the program about how things really operate - and the fact that she hasn't learned that is really Mel's fault.  And it would be a lot easier for her to learn these things if the people she is supposedly working with actually worked with her and tried to show her the ropes - instead of trying to compete against her.

This entire plot line is terrific, Louise!

Thanks,
Marie

I am indeed.

If there is anything good that can be said to come out of the tragedy of Heath's death and the new focus that Brokeback has received as a result of the notoriety, for me,  is to give me another shot in the arm toward the first cut of reworking the rest of the Greenlea stories so that I can offer them to new fans and to those who need to read a positive story of hope for the Ennises of the world.

See now I do find that charming. I can,t help it lol. Yes I know maybe his methods are a bit errrrr, different? But hey it got the desired result didn,t it? Miss snooty knickers will get over it lol. As for crossing the line, I can,t help it, I have to forgive him, he reminds me so much of me lol.
Thanks for this Louise. It really is helping to cheer us all up a bit.

I'm not so sure Ellery would agree - I don't think he desired the result of that ass kicking he got from Wes!     (Or having the case taken out of his hands).  But I do agree that Louise is doing a great job of cheering us up!

Top Ten Things Ellery Needs To Do
(In addition to attending the Seminars)

10.   Get a subscription to Ms. magazine.
  9.   Go to the video store and see if there are any old "Maude" episodes
        available.
  8.   Since he doesn't like the whiny voice of the doctor on his meditation tapes,
replace them with the "The Feminine Mystique" book on tape.
  7.   Make a substantial donation to N.O.W. (bonus points if he actually becomes
a member but I realize that's pushing it).
  6.   Have Mr. Coyote give him a lickin'.
  5.   Write another essay.   This one entitled, "Women Are Not the Enemy: How
I've Learned to Stop Being an Arrogant Jackass"

  4.   Make dinner for Edna and serve it to her (bonus points if he wears one of
        her aprons).
  3.   Have Mr. Coyote give him another lickin'.
  2.   Apologize to Paula and mean it.
  1.   Make an appointment with Stew and get his Will updated and POAs drawn
        up!!!!!!!!!

What? I go away for a couple of hours and there's two pages of posts and two chapters to catch up on??

Gosh, you are on a roll Louise! We're in France right now, doing a bit of skiing (tomorrow hopefully) and I brought my computer with me. Well there's a first time for everything I guess. If I fall and hurt my knee like I did last year, at least I'll have this place and your stories to keep me busy!

Oops - sorry, Fabienne.  Yeah, I guess those references might not be easily recognizable outside of the U.S. - "Ms." is a landmark feminist magazine first published in the 1970's.  "Maude" was a popular 1970's American sitcom about an outspoken feminist.  "The Feminine Mystique" is a book written in the 1960's that some think helped to ignite the contemporary women's movement. "N.O.W." is the "National Organization for Women."  Can't see Ellery doing any of these! LOL!

Have fun and be careful!

I,ve got to stick up for poor Ellery here lol. Yes he may be an arrogant jackass, but that,s just in his nature, and you can,t change the way you are inside. He may be able to learn to bite his tongue, but his basic nature, he can,t change that, and I wouldn,t want him too. He,s just great the way he is thanks. And making him write another essay is treating him like a child, IMO. You wouldn,t have Wes make him do that would you Louise? Poor Ellery. It,s not his fault he doesn,t like woman, and he probably doesn,t mean to be rude, he just can,t help himself.
Thats my 2 cents, for what it,s worth.  :)

SPOILERS

Hard to see Ellery so subdued and "un-Ellery-like," but I hope it means he's really taken Wes's words to heart.  Maybe Colson can help him sort things out in his mind more clearly.

Lovely to see how much Joe and the staff care about him.  And sweet, loyal, honest Jeremy - can't say enough about him.  I'm so glad he and Ellery are partners.  I feel for Wes, too.  That conversation had to hurt him as much as it did Ellery.  I really liked Wes's line about the good and bad in all of us.

Let's hope this means some fresh starts all around.  Great job, Louise.

Thanks,
Marie

Souxi, you make me laugh - I'm sure Ellery appreciates the support, and I'll bet he would agree!

SPOILERS- Chapter 48

Oh my - I was afraid he'd hit the Glenfiddle.  Colson is the best - so full of concern, but also able to keep things in perspective.  But he knows his man doesn't he?

“Did you swear at her or somethin?” Colson was suspicious.

 But I wanted to hug him when he told Ellery he didn't know what to make of him sometimes - yeah, a lot of people feel that way! LOL!

This whole thing may have been a wake-up call to Paula, too.  A very classy and smart move on her part to call Ellery.  There's been way too much personal b.s. interfering with their jobs - and not just on Ellery's part.  I'm curious to see Ellery's reaction once he sobers up!  On second thought, maybe her call did sober him up!

Thanks,
Marie

Muck out mares???? You mean I actually have to clear up bloody horse shit?? grrrrrrrr. >:( Do you have any idea just how much I HATE horse shit? No? Well let me tell you all about it. You see when I drive to my parents house, through many quaint little English villages, sometimes people ride their horses on the road. BUT, as the horse trots merrily along the road, what does it deposit in great big steaming lumps??? SHIT!! >:( Bloody great lumps of the stuff and it gets all over my tyres!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrr. >:( So I think I,ll just sit here and think steamy naughty thoughts about what Colson can do to Ellery in the bedroom without the horses thanks. The thing that pisses me off as well is, the rider just carries on merrily, and leaves the bloody shit there!! >:( I mean if you take your dog out for a walk, and it craps, you clear it up right? You don,t leave it there for people to come along and tread in and take home on the bottom of their shoe. So why don,t bloody horse owners clear it up!!! grrrrrrrrrrrrr. >:( Right end of rant about horses lol.
Now I seriously need some cheering up here, so I want PLENTY of smut when I come back in the morning please Louise, accompanied by the sounds of begging and pleading and batteries.

Wow - Chapter 50!

“This is about Ellery, ain’t it? You got your Ellery face on.”

I love that Wes has an "Ellery face."  There's something touching about watching Wes and Edna acting like a typical mom and dad fretting over that boy of theirs with the smart mouth.  LOL!

Really nice talk between Wes and Mel.  They should treat them like grown-ups and let them work it out (of course, that's providing Ellery and Paula both start acting like grown-ups LOL!).  Those two need to learn to respect one another and that can't be done through intermediaries.  Paula has obviously done some thinking - and I'm wondering what Ellery will be thinking once he sobers up!

Very nicely done, Louise.  I really needed a trip to Greenlea County today.  Thanks!

After that sad autopsy report, I needed a trip to Greenlea too.  I also had a nice email from a new reader who just spent the last four days marathon-reading 'Taking Chances' and 'Looking for Answers' and is now wondering how she can go on waiting for more story!  So I put another 10 chapters of 'A Second Chance' up on the site.  The editing work is much easier on this story since a lot of it hinges on Ellery's past and the development of the characters at the Red Stallion.

Spoilers Chapter 50

There ya go! Let the professionals get on with professing & soon everybody will be feeling better & wanting some of Edna's good cookin'.

Again, a reminder of just how many levels you give us when you develop these characters. Wes losing his appetite cause he feels guilty about the way he had to slap Ellery down & with everyone reacting differently than he expected them to he's triple guessing his decisions.

I'm glad Mel was brought up to speed & gave Wes his perspective on where the communication breakdowns have been occurring between the Sheriff's ofc & his ofc. This really didn't happen overnight, but I think things are back on track (at least for now)

Edna will be so happy that she will be having company for dinner. She'll be baking her butt off!!

And don't think I missed that little part where Wes mentions whisking Ellery away for a few weeks!! (I smell a tropical breeze heading our way!!)

Yes Marie-I think today was another one of those Greenlea take me away sort of days!! I'll add my thanks to hers, Louise!!

Fran

ETA: Oh-I envy that lucky new reader that has so much great story to read for the first time. Yes-the autopsy report was sobering. Now, I need that boy to get his proper burial because I know how anxious I feel & I can't imagine how much worse his loved ones feel without that closure.

Gosh, Louise, after a gloomy day yesterday, this was a great way to start the day.

I love these little things and interactions with people that tell you so much about them. Like Edna pouring sugar into Wes's cup of coffee. I love details like that.

It's like she said 'I’m always right, Brownie'.  ;D

Great conversation between Mel and Wes. Now, let's hope Ellery and Paula get their act together and put away Amos for a very long time.

And then it's off to Puerto Rico! Yeah!

Yeah ok I (reluctantly) agree that maybe Ellery has to learn to curb his sharp tongue just a bit, but not toooooo much. It,ll take away some of his charm. Maybe he can take his frustrations out on Colson when he gets home from work. I like the way everyone at the station is sticking up for Ellery though and showing loyalty to him. Shows they think a lot of him. God bless Ellery.  ;D

Oh, this is a very interesting chapter!  So Jeeves has found someone from "out of town."  I'm curious about who that is - I do hope Jeeves can settle into a more permanent, fulfilling relationship.  He is a lonely man with a good heart.   Can't say I'm sorry to see the awful Jerry put in his place.

I also thought Lauren's comments about Jeremy and Nick were interesting.....he seems to be feeling a little abandoned by their departure, maybe even a little betrayed, somehow?   :-\  And speaking of Nick - which I always like to do  ;D  - is he working at the bar at all anymore?  I thought he was going in when his college schedule allowed?

Poor Pinky and poor Wayne, too.  Kind of sweet that he thinks of Ellery and Colson as his parents.  I hope the fact that Wayne isn't allowed any access to Pinky will remind Ellery he needs to make an appointment with Stew......

Wow - two chapters this evening!  I hope the writing is proving to be a comforting distraction for you.

SPOILERS

Aww...Wayne.  How sad. I did not see that coming, though, in retrospect, I probably should have.   That scare should prove to be a wake-up call for all of them in many respects, not the least of which is putting things in the proper perspective.  And I really didn't see this coming:

“Yer face don’t lie, Ellery. Now, I think I can go on.”

Uh oh.  Let's hope this is a temporary delusion on Wayne's part.  I'm glad Ellery has the means available to help - hard to think of all those men who didn't (and don't) have family or friends to provide that kind of assistance.  Ellery told Colson once that he opened the bar to give the gay population in Tourmaline a safe harbor of sorts, but I'll bet even he never imagined just how much it would be needed and how important it would become.

A couple of very thoughtful and sobering chapters - really well done, Louise.  Thanks.

Well, it's true that having AIDS isn't going to stop Wayne from being......Wayne, and part of being Wayne includes trying to manipulate people whenever he can, and as level-headed Jeremy so neatly put it "....pissin people off. It’s his means a entertainment."   I highly doubt if anyone at the bar would take Wayne seriously if he tried to play the "Ellery is in love with me" card, and let's hope he's smart enough not to ever say anything like that in front of Colson!  (although past experience shows that Wayne's common sense is frequently on a long lunch break).

I always enjoy watching Ellery, Colson and Jeremy interact - a really interesting combination of personalities, and it's clear how much they all like and respect one another. The dialogue was great, as always.  I'd like to see Ellery and Colson get to know Nick better on a social level - hope the four of them can get together for dinner another time.

Funny how Colson was listening so carefully when the conversation turned to Paula.

"....don’t do nothin ta piss her off anymore, Chief.”

Yes, wise words, Jeremy.  I'm looking forward to that meeting!

Thanks, Louise!

“Apology accepted, Chief Deputy.”

Yes Marie I,m wondering about Colsons reaction too, when he finds out who it is. *wonders who it could be*
I should think the entire sherrifs department will have to restrain him when he finds out. We know what his temper is like, expecially when someone hurts one of his girls. I shall be chewing my fingernails until the morning now.

But what's really amazing, Louise, is how you are able to take a chapter that deals with AIDS and rape and still give us a bit of comic relief.

On another note, I am woefully behind on the re-writes but that actually makes me happy, because I can read them in big tasty chunks (my friends page has me drooling like Pavlov's dogs whenever I refresh it lately!)

Ellery smiled faintly. “I’m glad you got a head on your shoulders, sweetheart.”

“I’ll never forget how upset you were when I went after Worrell that time. I didn’t want ta see ya like that again.”

“Thank you, Colson. That means a lot ta me.”

Exactly! These two are so devouted to each other. Being there for each other in a time of need has been a constant in their relationship. And they both have learned to reign in their temper in doing so, putting the other one first.

Good to see Ellery's always thinking practical. You know, the 'big picture'.

And the girls with Wayne in the apartment? Well, that will be interesting for sure.

Well, that's a relief.....I think.  There are minefields everywhere in this entire, terrible situation.  How long can they keep the truth from Laura?  I imagine she's going to have to find out eventually....

I keep remembering something Ellery said (I think to Simon) back in one of the Red Stallion chapters - it was after he and Colson had returned from that trip where Ellery developed the rib problem - he told Simon that his worst nightmare would be one of the girls showing up on their doorstep with a black eye and needing their help.  Sigh.  A lot worse than a black eye, isn't it?

But, Fabienne said it beautifully.  Their devotion to each other is a constant.  And that, together with Ellery's law enforcement background and his sharp mind will be a great help in the days ahead.  Wonderful writing, Louise.

Thanks,
Marie

It sure is a hell of a lot worse than a black eye Marie, but just imagine how Colsons rage, which is already at bliling point, will explode if she turns up WITH a black eye, split lip etc. My God he,ll go insane with rage. God forbid it that were MY daughter I,d want to know, then I,d go after whoever had done it with a sledgehammer.  >:(

I was just coming to post the link! (I think that should be Chapter 60, Louise.)

SPOILERS

Well, it looks like Wayne and I were thinking along the same lines, which is actually a scary thought LOL!:

“Point I was gonna make is, ya got a trillion dollars, why not just get em an apartment?

Sounds like a plan.  Watching Jeremy put a hand on Colson's shoulder and Ellery place a hand on his other arm while they both offered their help was so touching - he's surrounded by love and support, and Pam will be, too.  Lovely.

Thanks, Louise!

yikes!

yes, 60. I should never count on my number buffer for nexting!

Just a warning for Saturday, first there's the DVD Film Festival, and then I am going to Santa Cruz in the evening for a midnight showing of 'Brokeback Mountain' - great little flick, maybe you have heard of it.  This may sound surprising, but I have never seen this film on the big screen in English.

So.... while I am going to try to whip off a chapter tomorrow, events may intervene!

You're missing Chapter 59 now, Louise! LOL!  When you corrected the numbering last night, 59 and 60 got reversed.  So, 60 should be 59, 61 should be 60 and 62 should be 61 - clear as mud?  Now, on to the important things ..... I'm envious - there ain't nothing like Brokeback Mountain on the big screen!

With all of Ellery's money they can keep their house and have a farm! And he can keep his job.  And they can build a nice little guest cottage on the farm for the girls - so Ellery and Colson can have all the privacy they need!   ;D Money may not buy happiness but it sure makes things a hell of a lot easier! LOL!

I love funny Jeremy.  And it cracks me up that Ellery is pouting at Colson's and Jeremy's skepticism - “I can too buy a farm!”

But I'm worried about Pam (and Colson)...and anxious for the girls to get there!  I'm loving this, Louise!

Ellery buying a farm...and everyone teasing him...LOL

But on the other hand, he is married man now, with a family. Maybe it is time to move out of his one bedroom, one bath bachelor pad. He may be thinking more clearly than anyone realizes.

And remember one of Ellery's most famous lines..."Homemade baked goods just slide down my throat..." Having Katie Ann and Pam nearby might be a very good idea, especially since he is supposed to gain a few pounds.

I woke up this morning at 6 am with Colson and Ellery on my mind (I know, don't ask...)

I'm now not sure whether getting Pam and Katie Ann to come to Tourmaline is such a good idea. I'm wondering about the relationship between Pam and her mother. What is she going to think about all this? Her daughter gets raped and then takes off to stay at Wes and Edna's. To Laura, these are strangers. I can understand that there are troubles between Pam and her mother, but why couldn't Colson and Ellery go to the hospital and then decide about what to do? Maybe Colson acted a bit to hastily there.

Would Laura actually not want to have anything to do with Pam? Are things really that bad? That's very harsh. Maybe she'll want to be with her daughter and now not get the chance because she isn't around. I'm expecting some very explosive phone calls.

I'm wondering what Edna's thinking about all this.  :-\ I'm sure she'll be wonderfully supportive to Pam and her sister.

Ah...I love the sound of that, Leslie.  And, yeah, Ellery did like those fig newtons and little quiches that the girls made, didn't he?   :)

I woke up this morning at 6 am with Colson and Ellery on my mind (I know, don't ask...)

LOL!  No need to explain at all, Fabienne - I think all of us here understand perfectly!  And I think you raise some good questions.  I, too, was wondering if perhaps Pam wasn't giving her mother enough credit.  We're only hearing one side and we all know that there are three sides to every story.  I guess we'll know more once the girls arrive.  But if Pam has so much fear of her mother (whether it's deserved or not) she probably didn't need the added stress of dealing with her immediately.

I agree that Edna will be a great help.  And nothing is written in stone, after all.  If it's decided that it would be better for them to go back home, they can always do that.  This is such a sad and unexpected turn of events - but isn't that just like life?

Sorry I didn't get a chapter out today folks. I was completely wide awake after the midnight showing of Brokeback last night, and full of a sense of gratitude and inspiration (if you can believe it) and then had a lousy night's sleep afterward.  I got home from Santa Cruz about 2 p.m. and just collapsed like a tent in a high wind, after calling my new acquaintances by the wrong names and babbling incoherently about all of the new thing I saw in the film.

I got another 10 chapters of 'The Brotherhood Murders' formatted and edited and posted, but I am not sure I have the gumption to write a new chapter today... sorry for that!

I will be clearing my schedule for next weekend though!  I believe I will be wrapping up 'The Rookie' sometime soon.

Cool how "The Rookie" and "The Brotherhood Murders" are kind of dovetailing at the moment!  Adds another interesting layer to both stories.

“Yeah but it’s different now.”

Ellery shook his head vehemently. “No – it ain’t different now....

Poor Colson.  Such a natural reaction - but exactly what Pam doesn't need.  This is where Ellery's experience is so helpful.  He knows that the last thing in the world Pam needs is for everyone to be walking on eggshells around her as though she is now damaged goods.  I'm feeling a little nervous myself about the girls' arrival.....

Really, really well done, Louise.

yes, for some reason the plots here are integrating, or ... recaptulating, or something.  The unresolved issue of Amos Marigold and his larger conspiracy that came to a head in 'Brotherhood Murders', which I think I will be renaming as 'The Brotherhood Conspiracy'.

And I finished that volume and am working on the next book, the shortened 'Shelter from the Storm' where Ellery finds out to his shock that Colson fantasizes about Kate Jackson and 'that girl from the Avengers.'  This might be the funniest chapter I ever wrote.

“So when yer beatin off, you think about titties an naked women an such.”

“Mostly.”

“Dupree, what the fuck is this ‘mostly’?”

“Mostly!” he said, slamming down his beer. “You want me ta be honest, that’s the honest truth. Mostly. Every once in a while sometimes I think about a man, but mostly it’s women.”

Ellery turned to Colson. “Colson, you ever fantasize about women, you know, when yer jerkin off?”

“What a you askin me that for Ellery?” Colson glared at him.

“It’s a simple question, Colson.”

“You mean nowadays or in the past?”

“Any time!” Ellery said, frustrated.

There was a knock on the front door. “Pizza’s here,” Dupree said, bolting off his bar stool and heading for the door.

Well, Pam is not the only one who's happy that Ellery is there. I am too. I hope now that Colson has seen that Pam is 'the same' (on the surface at least) he'll be able to calm down a bit. I know he was sick with worry, but I understand that Pam doesn't want people to treat her differently now. On first impressions she seems to doing well, considering the awful circumstances.

I loved it when Pam said that about Ellery being the police chief in the family.  :) Ellery must have been pleased to hear that. And yeah, she was right to get out of there. And what's with this guy being able to get away? Are the Tourmaline police force the only ones who can catch the bad guys? It looks like Wes will get involved pretty soon.

And I can't believe how Pam's mother is treating her. Being a mother myself, it's incomprehensible  :(

I'm glad the girls have arrived safely Louise. Great chapter. Looking forward to the next one.

Thanks!

Me, too, Fabienne - on both counts!  "Step-dad" Ellery hit just the right tone with the girls on a personal level and "Chief Deputy" Ellery is going to be of immeasurable assistance on the law enforcement level.

As for Laura - ugh.  What a vile and repugnant attitude.  I don't even want to get started ..... >:(    Thank God for Colson and Ellery.

I simply cannot beleive Pams mother. Her attitude is appalling!! What saddens me is that there probably ARE women like her, who really DO think that women who are raped, "ask for it" by the way that they dress, or act, or how much makeup they have on. She ought to be ashamed of herself. Evil bitch.  >:(

Oh, my.  That was even worse than I thought it would be.  Colson was right in hanging up in the face of such abhorrent and hateful ignorance. Calling your own daughter a whore who lies about being raped?  There was clearly no rational discussion to be had.   I shudder to think what would happen if the girls didn't have Colson and Ellery to turn to.

Interesting discussion at the beginning of the chapter, reminding us that in the early 80's it really was common belief that AIDS was "that disease queers get.”

Very thoughtfully written, Louise.

Nice for Colson and his girls (and his girls  :) ) to all go riding together, and a nice mother-son talk between Edna and Ellery.  As much as she loves her boys, she's an objective and fair-minded person and a "momma" herself at heart.  Ellery is right that the girls certainly will be well cared for at the Brown's home.

Ahh...well, I've been waiting for this - or something like this - Jeremy and Ellery and Colson are a pretty tight trio and I'm not surprised that Nick feels like the odd man out.  And it doesn't help matters that he's the baby of the bunch, just starting college while the rest of them are well-settled into careers. And it also doesn't help that one part of that trio is his former hard-nosed employer. And it also doesn't help that he's still feeling insecure about Jeremy's sexuality (and their relationship in general); it wasn't that long ago that Jeremy had his "date" with the older, taller, and to Nick's eyes, sophisticated, assistant district attorney of Greenlea County.  And it also doesn't help that they haven't yet done any socializing with Jeremy and his best friends - aside from Ellery and Colson's reception - and even then Nicky was serving drinks and helping out.

But, Jeremy's a smart guy and he knows that his cocky man is really an insecure boy.  Maybe it would help matters if Nick could help the girls settle into university life.....

Great dialogue, as always, Louise -

Thanks,
Marie

“Oh god amighty..”

Uh.  Yeah.  What he said.  Holy effin' moly, Louise!  :o  Nicky may be a boy, and a very naughty boy at that, but he's exactly the kind of boy that Jeremy needs.  He knows when to be gentle, and he knows when to tease, and he knows when to be......demanding.  But most importantly he knows Jeremy - sometimes better than Jeremy knows himself.  And you know, Louise - we haven't forgotten that Jeremy said there were a "couple" of things on his list! LOL!

“I hope yer still gonna bring some snacks up... "

   Good grief.  What was it that Colson said about Wayne just the other day.......

Thanks, Louise!

(Oh, yeah - you presume correctly - Wentworth Miller!)

“Because I am yer --- I’m yer husband. There I said it. An I earned the right ta nag when you bought me this ring.” Colson held up a balled fist, the ring glowing in the headlights of an oncoming car.

Ah....be still my heart.  Love wrapping it up with our two boys.   :)  I really enjoyed this story, Louise.

Looking forward to "The Grey Girls" and I don't have any doubt that you will surprise us with the unexpected!

Thanks,

Nooo - are you really sure all the loose ends have been picked up? Maybe I needed a little more Paula action, I think those were some of the best chapters, even if it meant more bitching and less sex. And I´m also still wondering about Esteban and how he´ll adjust to the new situation etc. I liked all the guys at the Sheriff´s Department so much, and the crime stuff & the variety of donuts ...

I only had two objections that ain´t real objections concerning the girls:

 a) the rape was a sort of abrupt turn of events, and when I read it first, it seemed to me as just a means to get Colsons girls to Tourmaline somehow, and I thought it was a little drastic. Then again, everybodys reactions to this were interesting (and it was such a smart move from Ellery to pour some alcohol in his man before he phoned Pam so he couldn´t drive down  (up?) there and decimate the population) and it´ll  lead to more interesting bonding with Dupree maybe ... which could piss Nick off a little ... which could prompt nice makeup sex ...
b) there´s still so much back story I don´t know, so for now I´ll take Pams word that she never did anything "wrong" -  but I think even if she was Waynes soulmate it still wouldn´t be okay to rape her and she´d still need her Daddy to be supportive etc., so maybe it would be interesting if she were a little less of a good girl. On the other hand I don´t want Colsons blood pressure to hit the roof ... It´s just that all of the boys are allowed to have so much sex and kinky fun and hang out at the Stallion if they want and it´s more or less okay, but the girls/ women have to be good. On the other other hand that would probably mean lengthy descriptions of het sex and all the readers would hate it.

Well, I just know I´m desperate for the new story, whatever´s gonna happen! Clara

welcome to our ongoing discussion, Clara!  I am glad you made it over here!  This is where all the "action" is, and even though we have a small number of commenters here, there are a LOT of readers.

About the abrupt transition, those are pretty much par for the course in our stories.  What you have not yet seen, however, are several stories that include Colson's daughters and the Red Stallion, one of them is a book -length story I wrote for Christmas 2006 entitled "Red Stallions for Christmas" where Pam and Katie Ann put on a full court press on their father about going to Tourmaline to escape from their mother.  So while the attack on Pam is a rather sudden thing in the plot, the idea of their moving has been brought up several times, and each time, their father has rebuffed them.  We are just now getting to the first iteration of that theme in "The Long Way Home" where Colson discovers, to his shock, that his ex-wife still has strong feelings for him, and that her jealousy of Ellery is a force of nature.

And -interestingly enough, your second comment about the girls and what they might get up to in Tourmaline, I have given a certain amount of thought to.... but let me leave it at that!

Hi Clara - I see you made it over here, too!  :)

I can certainly vouch for what Louise said - we never know what's coming in her stories and a lot of things hit us out of the blue.  But that's pretty much like life - you never know what's going to happen from one second to the next and there are no warning labels! LOL!

I can't wait to see what the girls get up to in Tourmaline! One thing we've all learned for sure is that Louise isn't afraid to show all of the characters on the best behavior - and on their worst! Should be verrrrry interesting in a number of ways!

That's one of the reasons I can't stop reading. You never know what will happen next. And one of the great things I like about your stories Louise, is that it's never 'plot for plot's sake'. There's always a story to tell. I never get the sense that you've sat there behind your desk thinking 'hmmm, let's see what I can throw at our boys next'. Never. It all feels natural, like Marie said, pretty much like life.

And having said that, I need to get a move on with reading the reworked chapters. I'm sooo behind.  :-\

Can't wait to read 'the adventures of the gaggle of Grey girls in Tourmaline'. I'm sure it will be good. For the time being the girls are right were they should be, under Wes and Edna's watchfull eye. I'm hoping for a smooth transition for them, I hope Pam finds a way to come to terms with what has happened to her.

Oh, and just a thought, a ranch hunh, for the girls...well, they are at a ranch now with people who will become important to them in no time at all. People who haven't got kids or grandkids of their own...hmmm, no knows, maybe Colson and the girls Ann might one day be working together.

Yeah, I know, I'm all for schmoopy and happily ever after.  :D

Absolutely!  They coudn't be in better hands - I dare say even Laura would have a hard time objecting to Edna......and as I typed those words it occurred to me that that would be a really, really interesting meeting! LOL!

Yes well done indeed Louise and thank you. Hey I had an idea lol. Once you,ve done writing about the girls, you can do the honeymoon, come on our boys deserve it lol, and THEN I thought, (nearer christmas mind you) how about a story with everyone, Colson, Ellery and the girls, AND Jeremy and Nick, having christmas dinner at Wes and Edna,s but with Aunt Julia as a guest of honour. :o :o OMG that would be a riot lol. Remember her priceless comments at the last dinner  our boys went too? She was so awful, I couldn,t beleive some of the things she said. fgs. And just imagine if, God forbid, because of this terrible rape, poor Pam ended up pregnant. Can you imagine what Aunt Julia would have to say about that :o Don,t bear thinking about lol. Just an evil thought anyway.

Oh, yes. We need this meeting. And so does Laura. I can't hate her, even though her behavior is very upsetting. There's too much history there.

well Soux... one thing I can tell you is that it is not in my plan to have Pam end up pregnant from the attack.  I like to try to stay within the bounds of realism and while it is always possible that unprotected sex leads to pregnancy, any given moment in time fertility ranges about 20% so it is a 1 in 5 chance.  (at least that is what I remember - Leslie our medical expert might correct me on that!) but no I had never er, conceived, of further repercussions for Pam that way.  However, any issues to do with rape tend to get under Jeremy's skin, which we may see come up later in the "Grey Girls."

I think of Laura as a woman who has always been fundamentally unprepared to deal with the uncomfortable facts of her life outside of the preexisting assumptions about familial duty and traditional roles, and this makes people rigid and insensitive when they would otherwise exhibit more sensitivity.  I have never thought of her as a "bad woman" but she still has strong feelings for Colson, and has never accepted his being gay.  And having to look the facts in the eye and realize that her daughters are more flexible, more forgiving, and ARE able to grow out of her mindset, makes her even more uncomfortable and unaccepting.

Ode to "The Rookie"

On a stakeout in the dead of night
Our Rookie is ready when things ignite
When his mentor has to fire a shot
He proves once again he is "Jeremy-on-the-spot"
"Selectmen" and the "Brotherhood" and a "Friend" who is no friend
All seem to be conspiring in a disturbing trend
Making deals with crooks like Amos makes Ellery see red
And his biting words to Paula fill our Rookie with dread
But in the midst of all the usual commotion
Our Rookie gets the good word on his promotion

Bank accounts and transfers and a missing $50,000
Make all the good guys hot under their collars
Ellery's blood pressure is making him dizzy
But that won't stop him and Colson from "getting busy"
And even though our Rookie is ripe from his trip to Yuma
His Nicky is still ready to jump on him like a puma
When Ellery fears that his time is getting short
Colson turns to Wesley for some practical support
That trip to Puerto Rico is looking better and better
Will it stop Ellery from being a fretter?

Next thing you know there are some interesting twists
Involving Chief Deputy Cantrell's wrists
Even though it makes for a side-splitting scene
It has poor Nicky turning green
For his man has been called upon to provide aid
Good thing his hacksaw has a sharp blade!
But we soon find out what's lurking in our Rookie's mind
It seems he harbors fantasies about ties that bind!

But things are also heating up in downtown Tourmaline
Where a plea agreement meeting turns into an ugly scene
Ellery and Paula are once again butting heads
Every time they meet the animosity spreads
But Ellery knows that Amos in a black satin camisole
May turn out to be his ace-in-the-hole
He makes a good deal, but it's behind Paula's back
And the A.D.A. understandably goes on the attack
Sheriff Brown has had it with Ellery's sass
And tells him to stop being an arrogant jackass
But Paula proves again that she's a class act
And is smart enough to bring about a much-needed pact

Back at the Red Stallion Lance makes his return
And Wayne's appearance at the house gives Colson heartburn
When Wayne mixes booze and pills things turn downright scary
Ellery wants to help him but he's still a little wary

Things turn from bad to worse with a shocking situation
How will Colson react to this heartbreaking revelation?
Colson's daughter needs him for emotional support
And Ellery may be some help if matters go to court
Colson is a nervous wreck, he's not sure how to act
And Edna gives some good advice with her usual tact

But Edna is a feisty one as Wayne is quick to see
When he calls Ellery with a whining plea
He is mad at Lauren for not filling his glass
And our girl Edna threatens to kick his ass!

The girls are settled safely with Wes and Edna Brown
But who knows what will happen now that the Grey Girls have come to town!
