Title: Tales of Greenlea County - Discussion of All Stories (UPDATE)
Post by: louisev on February 25, 2008, 01:26:32 pm
INCLUDES INDEX: (Updated 10-12-08)

Welcome to Bettermost, for new readers, and welcome to those who originally discovered the "Laramie Saga" which is now being rewritten as an original story.

I will be reserving this first post for the index and links to the stories, which are now very numerous!! and will be adding links to this first message as I gather them up and post them.

"Tales of Greenlea County" consists of a number of novel-length stories as well as a number of short stories and short-shorts that take place in Tourmaline, Arizona, a fictional town in northeast Arizona in the mid 1980's.  It centers around the deputy Sheriff of the county, Ellery Cantrell, and his encounter with a closeted, out of work horse wrangler, Colson Grey, who responds to an ad for a "Men's club" in Tourmaline, which draws Colson out to discover the mysteries of queer life after suffering the mysterious death of his gay partner, Adam.

Originally based on the character of Ennis from Brokeback Mountain, I have rewritten the story and changed the background and locale as a complete original.   My ongoing stories, I have written as "Greenlea Tales" so I am working my way forward through the original book series as well as continuing on with new stories that were not part of the "Laramie" tales.  (If that makes sense.)

I am advertising the story in a limited way in the Brokeback fandom, in part because the story when I first produced it created a firestorm of controversy over the original character elements and the lack of acceptance of a new life for the main character.  This discussion group is for a treatment of these tales AS REWRITTEN, and not about the rewriting process itself, nor about the former controversy.  Controversy still rages over the acceptability of the movie Ennis ever finding another love or a better life after Jack's death - and I have my own opinions about whether that was possible or not.  It was always my intention of transforming my first writings into completely original tales, since I have written a half-dozen original novels prior to this, and am used to having my own characters with their own back-story.

Please feel free to jump into any part of the story that you happen to be reading. I know that there are some "marathoners" who are reading 50, 75 or 100 pages a day on the site, and pretty soon most readers will be pacing me as I work through book 5, 6 and 7 in the first set of novels.  It is not necessary to use spoilers since many readers are reading the story for the second time or more.

When the first series (now projected to be 8 books, including the final volume "The Law of Greenlea County") is complete I will be adding the follow-on stories to it.  Until then, the later stories with Colson and Ellery will remain on my personal LJ, louisev.livejournal.com.  The version of "Taking Chances" on that LJ is an earlier edition.

no wonder I felt like I had to speed up, Marie!

Curious as this sounds, my work on "Shelter from the Storm" and "Long Way Home" is the first time in many months I have read these stories again.  And after all of the back and forth with so many readers about whether "Ennis forgot Jack" and "kicked him to the curb", I was really quite pleased that I had spent so much of "Long Way Home" dealing with his and Ellery's anguish over the future of their relationship.

Yep, I'm always right behind you, Louise!  LOL!

As for all the other absurdity   ::)  - I'll just say it is beyond me how anyone who actually read the stories could honestly make such ridiculous (not to mention contrary-to-the-actual-facts-of-the-story) statements.   "Long Way Home" is so beautifully poignant.

Goodness, okay. Reading Tales of Greenlea County has been an initially befuddling but always wonderful experience. I only began checking out BBM fanfiction after joining a livejournal community of Heath mourners, which soon led to my discovery of the brokebackslash and wrangler communities, which eventually led to Madlori's Human Interest stories, which then led to madlori's livejournal and a old post raving about something called the Laramie Saga, a series in which Ennis finds a new man and a happy life after Jack's death. Heh, I love the internet - it's so easy to stop and look back on the random progression of clicks that have brought you to where you are.  ;)

What happened next was about a day of utter confusion - Madlori and other discussion threads specifically talked about Ennis, and the thing was supposedly called the Laramie Saga, but when I started in on Taking Chances at louisev's livejournal, I found neither Ennis nor a Laramie setting! I knew I had the right story, because everything else Madlori had described  was there - a snarky, sexy policeman named Ellery Cantrell, a gay bar called the Red Stallion where it all starts, a whole host of amazing original characters with a relatively minor presence of "Ennis'" daughters and ex-wife back home, and a quality plot. I kept reading, thinking maybe there was some unspoken agreement between writer and readers that Colson was Ennis and Adam was Jack and so on. Then Taking Chances sort of ended, and the links I found to the rest were duds, and in a state of semi desperation I finally found a link to tcreader via wrangler. I've been devouring the series since then, and when I ran out of chapters towards the end of Shelter from the Storm I almost cried!  :P

By now, I've sorta got a handle on the convoluted history of the series, especially after jumping ahead to read through the side stories and a few enlightening posts on louisev. While reading, I kind of saw the story as a weird parallel universe of BBM, and I think Colson's grief and pain affected me so strongly because I applied to his character the powerful feelings I had about Ennis' tragic backstory. I do wonder if I would have reacted the same way to Colson if I had approached the series as an original story from the start, not to say that you don't convey Colson's loss vividly and effectively - and I think his random flashbacks to his times with Adam definitely help. My notions of parallel universes were bolstered by intermittent slips with the characters' names - I've seen Ennis written where it should be Colson, or Jack instead Adam, Curt instead of Bud, Junior instead of Katie Ann. I'm inclined to think these are typos, but they served as sort of stealthy reminders of some secret history just the same.

This is getting to be a teal deer - sorry - but I've been wanting to comment on this story for over a hundred chapters and I finally have the chance! I adore Ellery Cantrell - he reminds me more than a bit of Sirius Black and last night I had a dream about the two of them having coffee, so I've spent the day fantasizing about a Greenlea/HP crossover. Speaking of HP, I'm in the midst of attempting a post-series fic of my own, which makes me appreciate the world you've created even more, considering BBM's end was your jumping-off point.

I am in love with your police department, especially Wes, Joe Tooey and Dupree; Colson and Ellery's interactions with them range from hilarious to really touching. The dynamic between Colson and Ellery is fascinating and believable, and so very, very hot, and a few of their more intimate conversations about moved me to tears. Love em. In the Red Stallion world, I've developed a definite soft spot for Lauren and Simon - I cling to their unwavering sanity and decency in a community where everyone else seems to be slutty or dangerously psychotic.

One thing though - Colson's eyes seem to switch from blue to brown with puzzling frequency. What color are they really?  Sorry, sorry this is so long, just think of it as many chapters worth of comments.  :)

oh my!  When I had the idea this weekend of starting a new discussion thread for new readers I didn't think people would be showing up so immediately!  Welcome!

First off, please let me urge you to leave a comment on LJ if you find a discrepancy or a slip in the story because there are compelling LEGAL reasons for not having any remnants of Brokeback in the updates.  If you haven't yet, registering for LJ is free and will allow you to leave comments on TCReader.  And Colson's eyes are blue!  If it says "brown" anywhere it"s because I slipped up.  But Ellery's eyes are always grey, and we even have fan art changing our fantasy-Ellery, Hugh, so that our manip art has grey eyes!

And the reason for all of this changeover is mostly due to the Cease and Desist letter I got from the lawyers that represent Annie Proulx.  I am trying as hard as I can to get it all sufficiently originalized that it still remains an interesting story for readers in the fandom, while at the same time making sure I am observing the copyright issue.

It is great to have new readers after two years!  We have a modest sized but fiercely enthusiastic crew of  readers who are rereading the stories for the second, eighth or umpteenth time who are just as excited to discuss it all, so don't worry about writing too much!

Hey messej! Welcome to the club! I'm one of the rereaders Louise was talking about. I discovered Louise's stories because Leslie (Mainwriter) recommended them here on bettermost. Louise was already into the second book by the time I started so I was marathon reading from the get go and loved every second of it.

This has been so much fun!

Thanks for the welcome(s)! I will definitely let you know when I notice slips from now on - I have an LJ account, but do I need to friend tcreader to leave comments? I would've friended before now but I was a bit self-conscious friending a journal where no one would know who the hell I was...

I sorta gleaned the legal issues from louisev, and I find it a bit shocking - I've only ever heard of this happening with Anne Rice, I think. Have other BBM writers had the same troubles?

At first I sorta wished I'd been around to read when it was Ennis and Ellery, but to tell you the truth I have a weird, inexplicable thing about couples where their names start with the same letter - it's really the only instance where I don't appreciate alliteration. Totally random and weird, but there you are. Plus, I just love the name Colson. :)

TCReader is not a community, so no you do not have to join.  But you may wish to friend the TCReader account so that the updates will pop up in your friendslist.

I am looking forward to some feedback from people who are seeing the story for the first time!  I also wanted to say, my partner in crime and editor extraordinaire, Leslie (MaineWriter) came up with the name Colson.

Great to meet you, messej - Welcome!   :)

I'm one of those "umpteenth" time re-readers who is still as excited about discussing the stories as I was when I first discovered them.  Louise is right - you never have to worry about writing posts that are too long - no such thing!

Talk to you soon, I'm sure.

Wahhh, looks like I'll have to wait for tomorrow for more Long Way Home  :'(  Stupid time zones. Anyway, I was thinking about Dupree and I realized I picture him as bulkier, more manly version of that dude on Gossip Girl, the one who's annoyingly moralistic - Dan? Played by an actor named... Penn. Yup, he's got Dupree's face, for me.

Lessee if I can find some pictures...

I usually do my updates between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Pacific time, which is way too late for Europe.  But it always means the Europeans have something to wake up to!

Enjoy!

You're welcome, Louise! Erm, well some call me Jess, some Mess, some Jess the Mess, it doesn't really matter :)

Thanks for the link, Marie, but yeah, most of the photos are gone - plenty of Ellery and Ellery's socks, though! I wonder, do people still pretty much picture Colson as Heath Ledger? I sorta do, in a blue-eyed, more muscular way. And yes, Ellery as a gray-eyed, skinnier Hugh Jackman definitely works for me. So... pretty...

part of the reason a number of the pics were removed is because the C&D letter I received specifically mentioned an association between the fanart depictions of Heath Ledger, and my first versions of the story.  The primary fan artist who created the "Ennis and Ellery" fanart pulled the pics off, largely as a service to me to be sure no further trouble ensued.  I also made some changes in Colson's physical description that would diverge from any identification with Heath, i.e. height, eye color and musculature.

But that having been said...

One of the features of my story is to provide characterization through dialogue rather than lengthy description so this leaves far more to the imagination, i.e. Wayne bursting out with the enthusiastic comment "I bet yer thighs are hard as rock!" and Jim Allen describing Colson as "The Marlboro Man" by the way he walks across the bar.  I myself get impatient and bored by lengthy prose descriptions of appearances, and usually just sketch them in with the first introductory paragraph about a character, and the rest of the "image" gets filled in along the way by the dialogue and interactions between that character and others.  I think this allows readers to bring their own "image" to the story and make it more meaningful to them on a personal level.

You're so right about that - I feel like I've watched a six-month long movie in my mind's eye from the balanced emotional context and visual descriptions, as equally powerful as watching BBM. I became easily attached to the gaggle of Laramie characters, with their likeable and unlikeable attributes. I find myself thinking about certain plot lines and wanting to know more about how things turn out for E & C, and the rest of the gang.

I just wanted to say, BBM-Cat, and those of you newly joining the discussion, that it has been a big shot in the arm to me to continue on with the editing of this mega-story because of the enthusiastic readership, comments and feedback I have gotten from you.  A writer does not write in a vacuum, and knowing that so many people enjoy and consume the story at marathon rates (the last couple of weeks I have seen individual users logging 80 to 100 pages on my hit counter, doing marathon reading of hours at a time) and that tells me there is something alluring that keeps people reading!

so thank you, those who read and comment, and those who just read!

Speaking of enjoying your stories, Louise - if memory serves, one of my favorite chapters ever should be coming up soon.  I think it was titled "Memento Mori" "In the Open" and it remains one of the most beautiful, poignant and profound things I've had the privilege to read.

Marie

Edited to correct chapter title.   It's Chapter 41 of 'Long Way Home" that I was thinking of.  "Memento Mori" is Chapter 49 - a great chapter, too, in a different way - and I love the title, which is why it stuck in my mind!

Hooray, I was just posting to ask how soon, but ya beat me to it.

I need to find another newbie - I can't be the only one! It's like arriving late to the party... or, considering the legitimatizing overhaul, arriving late to the party that got broken up by the cops and moved to a house down the street.

I am so excited to find out what happens next - I've sorta peeked at future stories on louisev, but there were too many new people, so I held off diving in. Managed to glean that there are rings in the offing and Dupree is maybe gay after all, though. Heh, knew it - and then 38 kinda confirmed it.

I feel a smidgen of sympathy for Laura - not much, but it's there. It tends to flare up when she's off being so profoundly unhappy with her life, but the sympathy dies down whenever she tries to drag Colson and the twins down with her.

No you arent the only one, in fact another new reader has registered here at Bettermost, but sometimes it takes a little coaxing to get them to join in.  Don't worry, the regulars here just LOVE going back over things!!!

and there is a whole lot of plot and a whole lot of story that happens between 'Long Way Home' and the current stories, believe me!

LOL!  You can say that again, Louise!

Jess, don't worry about finding another newbie - although it would be great to see more new faces here! - I'm still excited about reading the revamped chapters as they're posted.  And I'm excited for you because I totally understand the anticipation of reading this for the first time.

I have some sympathy for Laura, too.  No doubt she was dealt a bad hand in life.  I don't like to see her bitterness rise to the surface and cause trouble between Colson and their daughters, but I have to admit it would be pretty hard to witness the man you still love being so obviously and madly in love with someone else - man or woman, especially when your own life is less than satisfying.

As for what you've gleaned, well - I'll just repeat what Louise said - a whole lot happens! LOL!

actually now that I think about it, most readers probably have not seen or read back over these since I originally posted them, and that is about a year and a half ago.  So there is a lot new going on here for rereaders!

I just had to post a bit from my favorite Chapter 41  - "In the Open," that I referred to above.

...It was something he squeezed down inside him, compressing it like a piece of paper wadded up until it became a tiny square, and then swallowed and forgot it, until it grew back to its original size in the presence of Adam – his catalyst, and came up and choked him until he could not breathe, until Adam revived him with his own breath, his own essence. It only lived in Adam’s presence, he told himself. The rest of the time, he was numb. He worked, he slept, he walked stoically and numbly through each day, thinking of little else but making the time pass until he could live again, in those compressed hours hidden away in that secret place that was his real life.
..........

He took the return at a slower pace, his mood sinking from anxious and sad to depressed, and he fought a suffocating urge to flee in the opposite direction, to ride Nellie down an unknown path to an unknown destination, for the sheer feeling of wild escape – because he knew he had to return and face himself, face Ellery, and face what he could no longer deny about himself. He was in love with a man, and admitting it to himself for the first time.

Witnessing this watershed in Colson's life is so incredibly moving I can't describe it.  A truly remarkable chapter, Louise.

Thanks,
Marie

I just read that chapter myself, it´s wonderful!  I´m another newbie ... I couldn´t decide where to post comments yet, here or at TC reader or on the "Rookie" discussion or at the end of each new chapter or everywhere. I´m a mess! But I´m getting there. Clara

you can post wherever you like, I read all the comments, but I tend to make more replies in this discussion, since it is the most-read area.  This discussion area gets a lot of reading from the public, because it isnt necessary to register or to log in, in order to read the comments here.

Another "new" reader, Messej, has just joined this week too, it is great to talk to you both!

The Long Way Home - is DONE.

Whew!

Now I only have... um... four? more books to edit and who knows how many short stories?

Next is 'The Red Stallion' which is so big I have to decide how to break it into two volumes - and what to call them.

Suggestions?

that is GREAT news!

Regarding suggestions about titles, perhaps the second half of The Red Stallion could be something like, 'Coming Full Circle' - (without giving away plots to new readers)
symbollically for many reasons, in particular more than one character's realization/acceptance of being queer; and literally, for two, round gold reasons....I must say I dreaded reaching the last page of TRS.

Damn I had to leave Ellery in LWH 60 laid up in the hotel sufferin in front of normal people porn, cause I´m pretty much in the same situation right now, minus npp and room service. I can only sit at the computer for work it sucks. So I won´t be reading the last chapters of LWH for a couple of days.

Well, anyway, those Prescott "vacation" chapters were interesting, Lauras reaction especially. I like it that she obviously hasn´t abandoned all hope for a fulfilling sexlife for herself - despite all her religious crap & calling others nasty & whore etc.  Okay, she ain´t dead yet! How she dressed down Steve for his poor performance, that really wasn´t the christian thing to do. Seeing that "perky" look on Colsons face to boot would´ve been too much for me too.
And when he scares her off with something along the lines of "I may not drink as much as I used to, but I still have that temper" I felt for her, cause the more endearing parts of Colsons personality have obviously been for other people.

Plus: the mysterious Jeeves appears. I´ve already read Chesterfield Fortune, but I still can´t picture him too well. I live in a world of happy stereotypes, so british & gay & stuck up equals Rupert Everett for me, I´ll make do with that for now.

I'm in the process of re-reading TRS, and since we're in discussion mode, I'd like to know what readers thought about whether Bill lied about having AIDS. I thought this issue kind of got cleared up when Ellery spoke with Wayne in later chapters, but I wasn't sure. Sorry if its been discussed before.

I think this is a great question! I guess I feel the way Ellery does - we don't really know for sure.  I certainly wouldn't put it past Bill to lie about it in order to gain Ellery's sympathy and to get him to visit him in prison....but I don't think we can totally rely on everything Wayne says either; for one thing, some of his assumptions are based on speculation and for another, he is ...Wayne :-\

True about Wayne's flighty character, and Bill's for that matter - I didn't know who to believe or if it was meant to stay ambiguous. Maybe you're right, it was a manipulative attempt by Bill to generate sympathy from Ellery. He knew it would create some anxiety in Ellery's mind given their sexual history together. Or, he was truly manipulating for a lighter sentence. Maybe Bill's revelation is more symbolic - he feels defeated and that he has nothing to live for. Or literally, he sabotaged his own health. The inconsistency I find in his revelation is if there was not a blood test available through the town clinic, then how would he know for sure?
Title: Re: Tales of Greenlea County - Discussion of All Stories
Post by: louisev on March 04, 2008, 05:53:22 pm
This question shouldn't really be ambiguous.  Ellery has no concerns, since his relationship with Bill was over four years before, and that was not an issue for him.  However, Wayne's conversation with Ellery is pretty convincing - if Bill knew he had AIDS at the time he and Wayne had their post-Gene fling, there would have been no reason for Wayne to have been using protection - and he did. If Bill really DID have AIDS then a) Gene would have been at risk and b) Wayne would not have been using condoms.

The original Laramie Saga stories have now been reedited into the 8 volume 'Tales of Greenlea County' and the final volume with epilogue is now up on my site.

Next I will be tackling the post-Saga stories in chronological order, starting with the passion-filled voyage of self discovery in 'Dupree's Choice.'  And I will be posting those on a regular schedule.

Yippee!  I should buy myself an ice cream cone or something!

Louise, I´m more than glad you started posting Dupree´s Choice, I need my 10 chapters of something per day or I go nuts. I already started rereading TC.
I´m real curious what Duprees issues are with being queer - worse than a brain tumor, hm? He´s practically living & working in queer heaven (well, for the back of beyond anyways) and picked up a sexy as hell boyfriend, leaving a trail of semi-broken hearts ... So, is he just stubborn and contrary or ... ? I won´t go to bed till you post some new chapters!
Plus: I´m real sorry for Jeeves, I love it that Paula is such a tall animal and envy her the jutting hipbones she doesn´t like, and Nick coming out to his stunned parents just like that - his poor mother going nuts - he´s such a sweetpea.

Okay, must go now, have to read read read ... Clara

Hi Clara -  I'm not sure if Dupree's being stubborn or contrary - maybe just scared and confused. The way I see it, he may be living and working in "queer heaven " LOL! - but the world outside of that is still an unaccepting place for a gay person, to say the least, and he's well aware of that. He was shot, after all, by a "queer-hater" because someone mistook him for Ellery.  But I don't really think his fears are all about his physical safety - I think it's exactly what we hear him thinking in Chapter 44 of "The Long Way Home."

Am I like Colson, then... fightin cause I don’t want ta be queer, fightin cause I can’t accept it, I look down on queers as not normal? Didn’t I always think I was more open-minded than that?

Easy ta be open-minded when I ain’t one of em. He slowed to a fast walk, leaning down, catching his breath, and peered into the gloom ahead of him on the lonely road. Easy ta be hetero an nice an sweet to the queers, if I ain’t havin sex with a man at night when I get home, nice an safe an secure with a tall blonde on my arm, bein normal.

Yes, I also look forward to my "ten-a-day!"  ;D

Louise, I had to tell you how much I'm enjoying my re-read of "Dupree's Choice."  I remember the first time reading it, we were all breathless with anticipation (I totally relate to how Clara is feeling!), but now I find I'm able to absorb the story in a different way and I have an even greater appreciation for how honestly and deftly you've handled this story.  I always admire the fact that you never flinch in the face of unpleasant truths and insist on giving us such human characters, complete with human frailties.  Truly remarkable.  Remember when you were waiting for us to come after you with pitchforks? LOL!

Here's a little homage to Chapter 13 - little Nicky Sampson's favorite childhood toy! ;D

god I loved Play-doh when I was a kid! I was OBSESSED with it!

And yeah I remember how nervous I was at this particular point in the story when Nick went down to the Carousel bar essentially cruising for "straight men" who were desperate and easily conquered.  I wasn't sure whether anyone would keep reading after that!

Good thing you all did!

Clara this is a great discussion about Dupree's sexuality - I had similar thoughts initially. It seemed he was fighting the possibility of being queer and more or less justifying that he was not because of his history dating women. I loved the chapter on 'percentages' (TRS?, sorry cannot recall) - whereby Dupree acknowledged he was something like 80% heterosexual and 20% queer.  At first I wasn't sure I liked Nick for Dupree, especially after his antics - he seemed too attention seeking and immature for our gem Dupree. However, in a sense they're both experiencing some of the same coming out issues at different stages - Nick to his parents and Dupree to himself, his friends/co-workers in general.

Damn, a hard time for Jeremy! Now I imagine he maybe always harbored the suspicioon that if he really *was* gay he´d probably be a total bottom, and that didn´t go down so well with him. They sure have a lot of exploring to do.

Well, and I really don´t hate Nick, cause he´s obviously even more confused than Jeremy; he has a lot more fucking experience, but less than zero relationship experience, what he´s had so far was the super-antagonistic-etc-opposite of a relationship. I mean, he just panicked because he saw something he really really wanted all of a sudden, and didn´t know how to hold on to it. So the tiniest rejection becomes a huge thing, and when things are messed up, there´s nothing better than to go and mess them up even worse.
I believe he didn´t do it to spite Jeremy, like Bill with Ellery, it was all sheer panic.

If Nicks mother *doesn´t* have a heart attack from all this turmoil (knock on wood), everybody will probably feel a little more relaxed when the next desaster strikes.

Oh, and little Pookie ... well, whaddayouknow ...

Ha - there´s chapter 41 and proves me wrong. Nick can be very convincing. Great sexy chapter, but Nick´s Dad was real nice too.

Yeah, he said ‘you be good ta my boy.’” An I said ‘yes sir!’ an I swear I almost saluted.”
Nick lay back against the pillow. “So I guess that means... yer my boyfriend for real, huh?"

Everything´s good with the world !! I´ll go to bed before something bad can happen.

And here are the last ten chapters of 'Dupree's Choice.'  I think you may agree - nothing really bad happened, or at least, nothing permanent!!!

And next up... the story  I wrote next, which was 'Red Stallions for Christmas'!

Edit:  Actually, what comes up next chronologically is "A Small Circle of Friends" so I will see what order I need to do them in before starting in.  At any rate - SOMETHING is coming next!

referring not only to the classic film with Jack Nicholson and Jessica Lange, but also our local postman, Wayne Bryce!

Yes, Dupree's choice happens before 'Small Circle of Friends'.  AFter that there are two stories that happen in an overlapping fashion:  'Red Stallions for Christmas' and 'Home for the Holidays.'   I actually wrote 'Red Stallions for Christmas' before that but chronologically 'Small Circle of Friends' occurs beforehand.

After 'Red Stallions for Christmas' and 'Home for the Holidays'.......then, 'The Chesterfield Fortune', 'The Rookie', 'The Grey Girls' ? Thank you.

there are a few shorter stories in between there as well.  'Dem Bones' and 'Blood Oaths' come to mind.  As well as the 'back to the beginning story' 'What I Did On my Day Off' told from Ellery's first person point of view.

I may be energized enough to post another set of chapters from 'Circle of Friends' later today.  It's a holiday, after all!

And don't forget one of my all-time favorites, Louise! - I think it was called "The L Word" - with Sweet Thing and Nicky  :)

yeah but if I can't remember all of them.... now I have to go back and check where "The L Word" fits into the overall chronology.

Actually doing an overal chronology would be handy I think. I get a bit lost sometimes too. I still haven't finished reading the new book 7 and 8

never enough time, never enough...

The index at the front of this thread I will continue to update as I go along, and put things in their proper chronology.  Just click on Page 1 and you will see them.  And also the TCReader site will be in chronological order by story because that is how I am posting them.

I just snuck some updates onto that main page.  I will try to find a good spot to put an index for everyone on TCReader, maybe I can make a landing page for it.

As well as the 'back to the beginning story' 'What I Did On my Day Off' told from Ellery's first person point of view.

This is my absolute favorite!! I've re-read that more than anything. I'm not sure why but I really fell in love with it! (it must be the Ellery POV, I guess.) It's sweet but very funny too.  **runs off to forage under the bed for dog-eared copy**

Leslie and I reworked that story down to a manageable 5,000 words (the original I believe was 13,000 or so) so that we could submit it to magazines.  So far haven't gotten that published yet!

Well-too bad for the publishing world-but I'm just glad I have my trusty copy of the original 13,000 words!! **hides it back under the bed where it will be safe**

Oh me too! I'm so glad I have the original stories printed and safe in my nightstand. (where they gather less dust than under the bed! )

Actually, the original was close to 20,000 words and we worked it down to 10,000 -- a 50% cut.

Congrats on another great story, Louise!  Parts of "A Small Ciircle of Friends" were very intense and emotional - I can see how it would have been exhausting for you!  But what a perfect ending:

“Yep.” Ellery slipped his hand over Colson’s reassuring hand, this time, the left hand with its smooth gold band. “Now we ain’t in no hurry anymore.”

If memory serves, "Red Stallions for Christmas" should be coming up!  This time around, will we learn what the twins gave Colson and Ellery for Christmas?   Inquiring minds need to know!  :)

I think so, I have to find out where "Home for the Holidays" and "The L Word" fits in chronologically before advancing to the next story, but it is definitely coming up.

I do remember something about a red bow...

Okay so now, I am in a quandary.  I dug out 'Red Stallions for Christmas' and to my very great surprise, the plot has Colson and Ellery agreeing to have the girls move down to Tourmaline for the next semester in January.

And I don't remember having written that part of the plot at all... clearly, since I based at least two stories on their going to the college up north since then!

Can anyone of you avid rereaders remember if there was a reason this changed somewhere, without my doing a frantic review of all the stories since the Christmas ones?  I am sooo confused!!  It also means that I will have to rewrite 'Red Stallions for Christmas' to fit with the subsequent tales.

I don't know if this helps - in TRS, Chapter 35 there is mention of the girls taking college courses.
“An in January her an her sister are gonna be startin some secretary courses at Yavapai College up there.”

College tuition arrangements are discused in The Law: Chapter 49 - it is also mentioned that Katie Ann might go to Tourmaline to help care for Colson while he is sick (but no overt agreement between Colson and Ellery regarding the girls moving to Tourmaline for college - though it may be kind of implied):

“Laura is givin Pam shit about disownin her an kickin her out a the house if she lets you pay for her ta go ta college. An now Katie Ann has got this idea she should come down ta Tourmaline an look after me while I’m sick.”

I don't know if The Rookie is too far down in the series but there is also mention of the girls attending the community college in Chapter 60:
"Ya know things haven’t been right since you ponied up all the money for them ta go ta community college..."

Overall, if I understood the question correctly, there does not seem to be an explicit verbal agreement between Colson and Ellery regarding the girls moving to Tourmaline for college.

Ha - now I know why TRS doesn´t just keep coming ... story mix-up?? To bad I haven´t read all the stuff you´re editing now. I´m rereading everything on tcreader from the beginning now but I´m only 2 chapters into Second Chance, so, no girls moving nowhere yet.
But I´ll keep my eyes open.
And I also really really NEED to read the story with Ellerys POV soon! Like now.
Small Circle of Friends was just the sweetest story - that Colson finally got the concept that they´re something like parents for the terrible femme guys from the Red Stallion & actually came up with the idea to invite EVERYBODY, even Wayne (or especially Wayne), made me oh so happy. And it was such a big step to realize that he can´t go on agonizing over Adam cause it´s killing Ellery; and Ellery has to realize that it makes him mad sometimes and he can´t help it, even if he wants to cut Colson every slack in the world!

I´m just a little sad for Jeeves, really. Everybody doesn´t want him, and he can´t even come to the party. He ain´t such a bad guy, right?

hi Clara, if you would like to get the new, revised, 10,000 word version of 'What I Did On My Day Off' I can send it to you but I am not yet ready to post it on TCReader.  I have to get 'Red Stallions for Christmas' sorted out.  If you send me a private message with your email address here on Bettermost I'll send it to you!

Okay, I think I got 'Red Stallions for Christmas' untangled.  Much easier untangling that than gutting the entire premise of the current story!

Dear Louise, I haven´t thanked you yet for mailing me What I Did On My Day Off. It made me most happy - Ellerys grumpyness about fucking Bill, and then his instant chrush on Colson, the bad closet case, ha. All sweet. I´ve read it five times at least! Thanks! Clara

I made an update to the index page to account for the completed latest story, "The Persistence of Memory"

http://louisev.livejournal.com/288008.html

Also, I have compiled a character index - which I will do for all of the books.  Here is the attached spreadsheet for all of the characters for Taking Chances.  In EXCEL format.

Guess how many characters there are in Taking Chances?

Oh my.

I feel a reread coming on. Nope, no use trying to resist it.  :)

I really should think about getting an e-reader, my nightstand is already stuffed full with the paper version of the-then-Laramie-books. Of course I could ask my husband if I could borrow his nightstand to put the Tourmaline books in. Who knows what he might say!  :)

yes, which is why I had to go back and do a full edit-mode reread.  It took me 9 days to go through the first two books.  The other thing I'm looking for is dialect slippage as well, because I don't want to end up having to explain why suddenly Mel Ruskin is talking like Wes when he shouldn't be, or -- well you get the idea.  I'd call it a "longitudinal edit" which is one of the beauties of not having these things in print as yet - I can remove inconsistencies and complications and just plain embarrassing things like changing the age at which Ellery's father died and which cancer he died from and other such things that readers make so much hay about once something is in print when it really means almost nothing except that I couldn't remember.
