Title: Our own way to remember Heath on April 4th, his birthday
Post by: CellarDweller on March 11, 2008, 08:14:39 pm
On the "Planet Heath" thread on DCF, we were discussing what to do to remember Heath on what would've been his birthday.

Many of his pics, you can see Heath wearing stripes.  So we've decided that on April 4th, we'll all go to work/school or any other appointments in a Heath themed outfit.  Those who want to are going to post pics of themselves in their Heath themed outfits.

I will have a black & grey striped shirt, and combat boots (Heath was often photographed in boots or distinctive shoes).

Please post up here if you want to particpate in this way, to remember Heath.

Great idea Chuck.......I have no doubt the brokies and Heathens here will participate in a similar way.

We did the same thing here in the days after his death, and I started a thread about it. Even went out to buy striped tights and Joker tights!  :D  ;)

I will definitely participate again on April 4th!  :-*

I requested the day off work so I could celebrate my guy. I'd hope to get my tattoo on that day but couldn't get in. I might have to get a little something that day.

I got my April 4th tat appointment after all-the first of two-yippee. Heath now, Brokeback on my 3 year Brokie anniversary.
I also have the day off work and will make it a personal holiday for as long as  I  hold his memory.
I will wear stripes that day-on my shirt and down my face.
I miss him as much today as I did 2 months ago.

Maybe I'll get hold of Toycoon to do a t-shirt craft project.

I've been thinking tonight about what I'm going to do on the 4th April. It's been niggling at me for a few days now, but I've remembered the special place where I can go for my own private tribute to Heath on his special day. Hopefully I'll be able to post some pictures afterwards.

Not sure. For the last 4 years or so, I have volunteered as 'face-painter' in the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFFF - www.bifff.org). I am not at all into this kind of movies, but it's fun because for one night (usually the Friday to Saturday) people who want to attend the festival's ball ("Vampires Ball") have to be dressed up and their face painted. With a group of volunteers we do just that all night through. Painting faces (mostly horror-film-related faces.. ). The volunteers have to have their faces painted too.

Anyhow, this year's festival's ball is on the 5th (a Saturday - if it had been on the traditional Friday it would have been on Heath's birthday), but I am thinking of having "The Dark Knight"'s Joker face painted on me, but I am hesitant. It would all be too morbid, kind of...  :-\

If I sense that I'll chicken out I'll buy something striped before the 4th and wear it that day.

Well I've been shopping today in preparation, and I'm borrowing a striped scarf from my sister for the occasion.  :) The assistant in a shop this morning though did look at me rather strangely when I asked her if they sold striped balloons.

Sadly, I am going to a funeral today-the chap was only 25 years old.  Another tragedy.

So, I'm unable to wear anything colourful to celebrate Heath's life (having to wear black an' all), but I went to good old Marks and Spencers and am proudly wearing black striped tights.

Happy birthday in Heaven,Heath¡. You won´t have any material things in the day of your birthday, but you´ll have others which are not touched, nor are seen, but that are felt. Because when you went away, you carried too much love with you that I know, there where you´re now, you will be very happy. And I also know that you will be by my mother´s side and all the dear beings who some of Brokies had lost; and that just like them, you will see us and you will take care of us somehow,of all these who still are missing you so much.
Despite everything,I´d have liked that you would be here, in the Earth, and that perhaps we all would have bought a certain material  and prosaic object; but that would show the admiration and affection we all feel for you. However, somebody,up there, has preferred that you are by his side, to distract him with your joy and your gifts from good actor. And us here, we must conform to look to the highs and to know that you´re now this sweet eyes angel,as I like to call you; and that you already know that we are sending to you this love so that you have a happy birthday in Heaven. We miss you, Heath.WE´LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU.

Here is my Heath inspired outfit today.

Heath wore a lot of stripes, so I have a striped button down.

Heath wore combat boots, so I have on my boots.

Heath wore "quirky" accessories (hats, scarfs) so I have on rubber braclets to match the outfit.

Well my tribute today didn't go quite as planned. I've been trying to work out the timings all this week to fit in with two appointments I had this morning, but it all came unstuck when I couldn't get a taxi at the time I needed, so I had to resort to plan B.

I ended up in the Remembrance Gardens, rather than where I'd planned to go, but that was kind of fitting anyhow. Today I bought a balloon, a big 'Happy Birthday' one as I decided today should be more about celebrating Heath's life rather than mourning his passing. I attached a note to the poem though, with a picture and a poem. This was what the note had on it:

Quote
His journey's just begun

Don't think of him as gone away -
His journey's just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is only one.

Just think of him as resting
From the sorrow and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
where there are no days and years.

Think how he must be wishing
That we could know today
How nothing but our sadness
Can really pass away.

And think of him as living
In the hearts of those he touched...
For nothing loved is ever lost -
And he was loved so much.

Ellen Brenneman

Heath Ledger (4.4.1979 – 22.1.2008)
“Such rare talent, lost too soon”

For Heath, his family, friends, and Brokies everywhere.

Also attached are piccies of the Remembrance Gardens, daffodils in the Remembrance Gardens, the balloon, and me in my "Heath's birthday outfit" (I'm also wearing striped knickers today, but I'm not posting a photo of those!  ;)). I didn't want to let the balloon go, so I tied it very loosely to the handle of my wheeled walker, and let the breeze tug the string free and eventually it slipped off and went floating up, and I sat there for a while and watched it float off above the town until I couldn't see it any more.

"Heath, I swear..."

Great pictures, Heathy and Jack's man!

I am wearing striped socks today and a very old bracelet with a heart-shaped locket that has an "E" on it. It opens up to a picture of my grandfather who I never knew. I'm gonna print your pic of Heath and his million dollar smile to put in the locket.

Great pictures everybody!  I wore striped socks and a striped shirt but don't have a digital camera so I can't post any.
Decided to celebrate Heath's birthday and life by going for a long walk along the sea. The weather has been gorgeous today.   I noticed other walkers wearing stripes and couldn't help it but wondering if they were wearing them for the same reason. When I walked passed them I kind of looked them in their faces looking for a sign.

I forgot to put in my post, where I'd originally intended to go was just out of town where you can see across the countryside to the hills of the Peak District. There's a spot just opposite where the local hospice is that's very special to me, but because of how the timings worked out this morning I couldn't make it out there. Both my grandma and a friend of mine died at the hospice, but just across the road from the hospice is the maternity home where I was born. The special spot's just a few yards further down the road.

When my grandma was in the hospice before she died, I often used to walk down the driveway to go and just stand looking at where the maternity home was (the building's a care home now). Though the hospice is a place I've lost two people close to me, it's also where I was born, so it seemed fitting. I wrote a cheque this morning, a donation to the hospice. I know they rely heavily on donations, and I already take part in their weekly lottery which my employer's payroll section deals with for us, taking our entry fee straight from our wages each month. I'd intended to take the cheque to the hospice, but I couldn't make it out there today, but I went into the hospice's charity shop in town and took the cheque in there instead. It wasn't a huge amount, but every little helps, and it seemed right to do it today.

Susiebk -- Cute striped hoody!! And that is an extremely beautiful yellow rose!

Today I wore black pants with gray vertical stripes, black shell, green shirt, and a purple sweater!! Kinda loud. I think it would have fit right in with Heath!  :)

Yesterday didn't go the way I wanted. My son and I were both unwell and so we both stayed at home the whole day. I didn't get out of my sweatsuit but at least wore my striped socks.
Instead, I wore stripes today. A striped longsleeve shirt and my purple striped scarf.

Never enough stripes, never enough.  :)

You can say that twice and mean it. I bought six (!) pairs of striped socks this week and didn't even think of Heath when I bought them. But when I unpacked them at home, Heath came to my mind and I smiled to myself. Maybe he was on my mind unconsciously.

Quote
Are you and your son feeling better, Chrissi?

Yes, everything is fine, thanks for asking. We weren't really sick, just unwell. Bad headache ony my part, feeling cold, tired and put through the wringer all day. But today we woke up and were fine.

Additionally to wearing stripes I had planned to hang a little cowboy hat into a tree on the fields were I walk my dog. It's made of plastic and I put a hole in it with a heated needle. I'll use a nylon thread and hope it will hang there for a long time. Will do this on Monday.

I guess the day doesn't matter, as they say, it's the thought that counts, and even if what we'd planned didn't come off, or didn't happen how we'd have liked it to, in our own ways we honoured Heath by thinking of him and remembering him, just as we do every day by talking about him and keeping his memory alive.

I hope you're feeling better today.

I never wear horizontal stripes (it's an "I think they make me look fat" thing), but I wore a red striped shirt purchased specially for Heath's birthday, and so many people commented on how much they liked my shirt.

I thought it looked good - those stripes and that red suit you!

I chickened out. Partially. The shirt I'm wearing is striped though. You can't see it but it is. Also, I painted my mouth kind of like the Joker, but didn't paint my eyes black. It would have been too sad..

whichever way you chose is the right way  :-*

I had breakfast with a fellow Heathen and a beach ceremony to honor him. Then I got a tattoo and met friend for drinks to toast him.

The next day was sad and depressing as hell. I cried for a good part of it because I felt so empty and let down. I think I was under the impression that doing all of that would make me feel better about the situation but it didn't because at the end of the day he was still gone. Go figure...

I know what you mean. I was quite down that weekend after the day too. I guess it's still early days though, and like with the passing of anyone it'll take time before it's not so raw and immediate.

Quoting myself ::), but it has been a while...

It's been more than three months and the cowboy hat is still hanging in the tree. On the day I hung it there in April, there were no leaves on the tree and it was bitterly cold. My fingers went all numb while fiddling with the thread and the anyway weak batteries of my camera quit their duty completely.

But this week I took some photos.

It's the second tree from the right, the one next to the more bushy one (and yes, that's my dog). The trees stand at the bank of a very small creek between two fields.

See the blue thingie between the leaves? That's it. I know the color is odd for a cowboy hat, but choosing a somewhat odd color seemed so fitting for a tribute for Heath.

That's nice that it's still there. Hopefully it'll be there for a long time to come.  :)

It seems weird now looking back that that was only 3/4 months ago. Heath's birthday was the day I first decided to "come out" as a Brokie and start going out appropriately dressed as a Brokie. In that short space of time it's just become the natural thing to do. One day this week I overlaid in the morning and was rushing to get ready for work, and in the rush I went off to work without my hat (I've developed a preference mainly for the black one). I only remembered when I got to work and got out of the car and realised I'd not got it, but all day when I went out I just didn't feel properly dressed - it was like something important was missing.

It was so nice to go through this thread. All of the photos were lovely and brought a tear to my eye.

I know that it's late on saying this but Happy BELATED Birthday to our dear Heath. He 'was' supposed to be/is 29 years old. 29 years old.
He may be 28 forever but we won't foget his birthday and celebrate for him.

Marion reminds us of this day of remembrance. I wish I could have seen Heath in a mature man's role.  :'(
