Title: When it's right it's right (chemistry, that is).
Post by: ednbarby on May 22, 2006, 03:37:49 pm
And... as per this request from JennyC:

Quote
Barb, now that we have a bad chemistry thread, can we also have a thread for on screen chemistry that you can not get enough of.

1.) Numero Uno which need not be named here

2.) Kathleen Turner and William Hurt in "Body Heat"

3.) Michelle Pfieffer and and Michael Keaton in "Batman Returns"

4.) Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire (sorry, Jake) in "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2"

5.) Gwyneth Paltrow and Joseph Fiennes in "Shakespeare in Love"

6.) Kate Winslet and Joaquin Phoenix in "Quills"

7.) Michelle Pfieffer (again!) and Jeff Bridges in "The Fabulous Baker Boys"

8.) Jennifer Aniston and Jake in "The Good Girl" (or, as I like to refer to it, The Unbelievably Lucky Girl)

9.) Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves in "Speed"

10.) Sandra Bullock and Bill Paxton in "While You Were Sleeping"

11.) Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant in "Two Weeks Notice" (hell, maybe I just have a thing for Sandra Bullock)

12.) Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes in "Emily Bronte's 'Wuthering Heights' AND "The English Patient"

13.) Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes in "The English Patient" (especially in that scene in the church on Christmas Day - GAH - oh, and the first time they dance, when he wills her to look up into his eyes, oh, and the first time they have sex, and, and...)

14.) Meryl Streep and Klaus Maria Brandauer in "Out of Africa" - sorry, but I think I'm gonna go add her and Robert Redford to my "horribly awry" list - I just didn't feel it the least little bit between the two of them, but the screen seemed to light on fire every time she and Klaus had a scene together

15.) Rachel Ward and Jeff Bridges in "Against All Odds"

16.) Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline in "French Kiss"

17.) Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn in "Holiday"

18.) Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in ANYTHING

Hmmmm.  It would appear I think it goes well more often than I think it goes badly.  Whoda thunk it?

Absolutely.  Just as two male stars who play platonic friends can have it, which reminds me I forgot the following:

1.) Paul Newman and Robert Redford in "Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid"

2.) Peter Dinklage and Bobby Canavale in "The Station Agent"

3.) Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman in "The Shawshank Redemption"

4.) Robert Duvall and Richard Harris in "Wrestling Ernest Hemingway"

5.) Stephen Rea and Jaye Davidson and Stephen Rea and Forrest Whitaker in "The Crying Game"

Agreed with most of Barb’s list 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 13, 16, 17.  I didn’t see some of the movies, some are just ok with me.

You don’t like Meryl Streep and Robert Redford in “Out of Africa”?  The scene where they were camping at night and Denys said something to the effect of “let’s get this over with” gets me every time.

Just some random ones from me:
1.   Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman in “Casablance”
2.   Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday”
3.   Richard Gere and Julie Robert in “Pretty Woman”
4.   Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in “Mr. and Mrs. Smith”
5.   Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”
6.   Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh in “Gone with the Wind”
7.   Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in “Before Sunset” (still have not seen “Before Sunrise”, sigh)
8.   Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez (have to dig up his name in IMDb) in “Unfaithful”
9.   Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone in “Basic Instinct”
10.   Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle in “Pride and Prejudice”
11.   Billy Crystal, Meg Ryan in “When Harry Met Sally”
12.   Michelle Pfeiffer, George Clooney in “One Fine Day”
13.   Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis in “The Age of Innocence”
14.   Daniel Day-Lewis/Juliette Binoche and Daniel Day-Lewis/Lena Olin in “The Unbearable Lightness of Being”
15.   Michael Douglas, Annette Bening in “The American President”
16.   Adam Sandler, Drew Barrymore in “The Wedding Singer”
17.   Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan in “Sleepless in Seattle”

I'm not a big fan of either but I have to agree here....they did have great chemistry!

5. Kate Winslet and Jim Carrey in “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”

No question about it!

(hell, maybe I just have a thing for Sandra Bullock)

I know I do. Oddly enough, earlier I was about to list her pairing with Keanu in the BAD chemistry list, because the trailers for their upcoming movie together look so bad. But they were good together in "Speed." Not so much wiith that movie she made with Harry Connick Jr., though. Actually, I didn't even see most of that; I just know it wouldn't have worked. The only time I've liked him was in "The Iron Giant."

OK, how about Kevin Costner/Susan Sarandon in "Bull Durham"? Much hotter than Susan with Tim Robbins, once again proving the adage. Actually, I like Kevin Costner in just about any light romantic comedy; he was good with Joan Allen in "The Upside of Anger" and with Renee Russo in "Tin Cup." Well, OK, I would exclude that recent one with Jennifer Anniston.

Speaking of light romantic comedies, I liked Mark Ruffalo with Renee Witherspoon in "Just Like Heaven." But he's always good. So is she, for that matter.

(And BTW, listing movies these days requires constant trips to imdb, because so many have meaningless titles completely unconnected to the content!)

Title: Re: When it's right it's right (chemistry, that is).
Post by: ednbarby on May 22, 2006, 07:08:09 pm
Oh, YEAH.  Kevin Costner and Susan Sarandon were HOT in Bull Durham.  How about Harrison Ford and Sean Young (who usually does ZERO for me) in Blade Runner?

I forgot another good male-bonding (platonically only) one:  Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin in Midnight Run.  Or how about Billy Crystal and Jack Palance in City Slickers?

Where Sandra Bullock is concerned, I think the chemistry was most palpable between her and Bill Pullman (I mistakenly said Paxton before - oops) in While You Were Sleeping.  There's one scene where their eyes meet for a long time and my heart just melts.  He has the warmest eyes, and he just looks like he wants to kiss her whole face, there.  Love it, love it.

That's yet another case where I don't even need to see the sex or even any kissing to feel the love between the characters/actors.  (However, in some movies' cases, ahem, I really *want* to.  ;))

Where its worked:

I'm SO glad someone already mentioned my first one, but I'm gonna go ahead and mention it again cause its my favourite movie of all time (other than that, I'll try and mention ones that haven't already been said):

1. Ingrid Bergman & Humphrey Bogart in "Casablanca"
2. Jake and Heath (has nobody said them already???)
3. Gwyneth Paltrow & Jeremy Northam in "Emma" (more for the delicious Jeremy than for Gwynnie)
4. Hugh Jackman & Famke Janssen in "X-Men II"
5. Harrison Ford & Carrie Fisher in "Star Wars"
6. Bill Murray & Scarlett Johannsen in "Lost In Translation"
7. Clive Owen & Ioan Gruffudd in "King Arthur"
8. Julie Christie & Omar Sharif in "Doctor Zhivago"
9. Johnny Depp & Juliette Binoche in "Chocolat"
10. Viggo Mortensen & Sean Bean in "Lord of the Rings" (that scene at the end of Fellowship where he kisses him goodbye on the forehead just gives me the shivers)
11. Emma Thompson & Alan Rickman in "Love Actually" (for husband and wife chemistry, you cannot go past these two.. although with these two, how on earth could you go wrong????)
12. Jennifer Grey & Patrick Swayze in "Dirty Dancing"
13. Kim Basinger & everybody she came in contact with in "LA Confidential" (the woman smoulders in this movie... phwoarrr.. she could generate chemistry with a leaf)

6. Bill Murray & Scarlett Johannsen in "Lost In Translation"
Oh, I love this movie too.  What do you think Bill Murray said to Scarlett in the last scene? :)

Quote
10. Viggo Mortensen & Sean Bean in "Lord of the Rings" (that scene at the end of Fellowship where he kisses him goodbye on the forehead just gives me the shivers)
How about Viggo Mortensen and Liv Tyler in Return of the King where Aragorn is crowned?

Quote
11. Emma Thompson & Alan Rickman in "Love Actually" (for husband and wife chemistry, you cannot go past these two.. although with these two, how on earth could you go wrong????)
Also Colin Firth and the waitress, and Keira Knightley and her secret admirer.  That’s a very sweet movie.

Jenny, I have thought so many times about what Bill said to Scarlett at the end of Lost In Translation...  my best guess would be something along the lines of "I'll never forget you or the time we had. If things were different in our lives, they could be different for us" or something.  Great ending to the movie.. wow, it was terrific.

I don't think anyone has mentioned:

Jennifer Lopez & George Clooney in "Out of Sight"

George Clooney & Brad Pitt in "Oceans 11" (which i just watched... great film..)

OK, let's talk about some real girl on girl action

- Jennifer Tilly and Gina Gershon in Bound

I quite like the suggestion of Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis in Thelma & Louise- yes it's platonic, but they do kiss at the end  :D :'(

Mandy may have already mentioned this one, but as long as we're talking about platonic bonding but I thought Angelina Jolie and Winona Ryder in "Girl Interrupted" made for the most interesting moments onscreen.  They went off like a firecracker...

Also:

Natalie Portman & Jean Reno in "The Professional" (sometimes called Leon... so bummed I can't get this on DVD currently  *folds arms in a huff* )

Natalie Portman & Timothy Hutton in "Beautiful Girls"

Natalie Portman & Clive Owen in "Closer"  (ok, so i'm a Natalie fan..  ;D )

I thought Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey gave riveting performances as Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker in Peter Jackson's contemporary classic Heavenly Creatures. The friendship depicted there was both beautiful and disturbing at the same time.

It's reported they had a real good time and lots of fun while preparatory work for and while filming Idaho. I think you can see this on screen. They really matched up.
Keanu may not be the best actor. Yet in MOPI, paired with River, he was really not bad. But it was River who carried the movie.

I also think Keau matched up good whith Sandra Bullock, but I think this one was already mentioned.

Thanks for reviving this fun old thread!  :D

I'd completely forgotten about it.  Gia is certainly a sad story.  But, I recall having the same reaction that you had Lee.  Very strong performances in that movie.

It's been years now since I've seen it.  I saw it on DVD with a girlfriend back in grad school.  But, I bought a copy from Amazon maybe a year ago.  But, I still haven't watched it again since the DVD arrived.  Your post is inspiring me to dig it out of the DVD drawer one of these days soon.
