I saw BBM for the first time on December 27th. I had a life before that. Now...
Things I have given up since seeing BBM
1. Cooking
2. Going to the grocery store (actually, most all sorts of shopping, to be honest)
3. Reading the newspaper
4. Watching TV (never watched much, but I have been cured of my apprentice addiction)
5. Balancing the checkbook
6. Exercising
7. Sleeping much less (down to 5 hours a night from 8)
Things I do, sorta...
1. Eat (when someone puts food in front of me. See no. 1 and 2, above)
2. Pay the bills (also difficult, see no. 5, above)
3. Work
4. Talk to my family
Things I do with gusto and passion
1. Write fanfic
2. Read fanfic
3. Hang out on the bettermost board (since 3/30; prior to that it was IMDb. Same thing)
4. Hang out in the bettermost chat
5. Scour the Internet for pictures of Heath Ledger
6. Scour the Internet for articles about Heath Ledger
7. Scour the Internet for anything else related to bbm
8. Have sex with my husband
No. 8 is the only reason my husband hasn't divorced me...

I actually do still go to the grocery store - have to, 'cause I'm the only one around here capable of it, apparently. ::)
And I do still exercise. But, tell ya what. The truth is... I've been working out like a maniac lately mostly because I'm inspired to look my best in a couple of weeks. Meetin up with some good, old friends, dontcha know.
But what don't I do since BBM that I used to?
1) Tolerate mediocre movies. If they don't pull me in in the first 15 minutes, I turn 'em off and send 'em back (to Netflix, that is).
2) Watch very many other movies at all unless I know they're gonna pull me in in the first 15 minutes. (I couldn't watch any other movie for the first two months. Since then, it's still been slow going.)
3) Hear any love song on the radio and not relate it in some way to BBM. If it's something I just can't possibly relate to it (but that's rare), I turn it off.
4) Have any kind of lengthy conversation about anything that I don't segue somehow, some way, into BBM.
Aw, Brokeback. Why don't you just let me be, hunh?

i hear ya, david...i don't know why i didn't notice this before...after Jakes says that about the the can opener...you see him kinda lounging back, TRYING to open a can of beans and not having much luck...gets the bean juice all over his hand...
just like Ennis asking for soup instead of beans, jack takes the camp tenders job to give Ennis an opportunity to be out with the sheep, which i think a guy like Ennis woould prefer..

If I could read something other than Fanfic, see a movie that doesn't star Heath Ledger or Jake Gyllenhaal-wait, I'm getting over that one, do something in the evening other than hang out in the chat room or on Bettermost I WOULDN'T BE HAPPY! So far, I like my new no life but when the empty cat food cans take over the house I might need to think about doing something differently. Until then....

My reply should be things I gave up for Brokeback...cause my life is the same I've just crammed all this into it as well.
I use to read voraciously, now I only read 2 or 3 books a week... :-\
I use to watch TV, now I only watch Prison Break and CSI and they're both over for the year so.... :D
I use to meet my friends for coffee, a movie, lunch, a long chat on the phone on the days my Dad's caregiver comes, now I go in my room and close the door and log on here instead more often than not. ::)
I still cook every day, in this house full of men I better or they'd live on pizza...but they do the dishes. ;)
I only vaccume and dust once a week now and I get the caregiver to do the laundry for me. My house is alot dustier than it use to be but still clean enough to be healthy :o
I still drive the kids to school and pick them up on my car pool days. I still go to all the little league practices and games with my youngest and the night varsity baseball games with my oldest.
And I am in love for the second time in my life...Thank you BBM for that most of all :-*

In my former life, I could keep my mind on a topic for more than 30 seconds, before feeling an obsessive need to go check email or the bettermost board for updates....

I had a pre-Brokeback life, and now I'm having a post-Brokeback life. Two completely different animals.
Ostensibly the same - kids, marriage, work, home, friends, pets, holidays, etc etc - but OH SO different internally. While I don't want to go as far as saying it wasn't really a life, the difference is so tangible, and so pronounced that I'm forced to wonder what the heck I was doing all that time :-\.
Seems as though that other world, the world in which one is untouched by Brokeback (the world the unbelievers still exist in) is muted, and the lens isn't quite clear. Seems like a dark, archaic world, a left-behind world. This new world is bright, sparkling, joyful, honest, and singing with possibility and power :).

:) i I used to just check email everyday and log off - now I have to check this thread and some of the IMDb boards several times a day and evening too, it's like I am OCD with all of the BBM stuff - I still think about that movie every single day! In fact I wish there was a way to see it again on the big screen - it never played the discount theatres here in KC - I keep hoping though :D

I used to vaccume only once a week befor I had a dog. But this hairy b*stard makes me vaccum at least every second day. Love him although.
Before Brokeback I used to see other movies. Now I'm totally ruined for movies. The only other movie I've seen from beginning to the end is 10 Things I hate about You. You can guess why.
Before Brokeback I used to watch TV. Now the only TV interest that's left is my ER addiction.
Before Brokeback I used to read books. Now I read on BetterMost. Or fanfiction, which I never liked before. But with fanfiction, you can always hope for a happy end.

Shit. That's hard ;) If you don't force your attention to it, it might stoke the day, rewarm that old, cold time on the mountain when the boys owned the world and nothing seemed wrong. :)

Things look pretty much the same on the outside. But instead of becoming glued to the couch, I'm now glued to my desk chair, on the computer, sharing and absorbing the oberservations of others in my same situation. I can't just sit and watch TV or a movie like I used to, let it "entertain" me, I crave more meaning. I was OCD on the imdb site for months, but have finally realized there is more to life. Like this site! Oh well, like I said, pretty much the same outside.
I have started engaging with other people more, doing things, dinners with friends, calling up just to chat, etc; rather than sitting home and "relaxing" (another word for tuning out). I'm engaging more. I watch some of my favorite "old" movies again, with renewed appreciation and a more poignant intrigue, they affect me more emotionally somehow. I tear up at scenes that used to just give me tingles, that sorta thing.
Reading fan fics has become my recent fanaticism. I have actually bought several 3 ring binders, and sit at night while watching something banal on TV, and punch holes and organize collected fan fics, hundreds of pages of fan reviews from various websites, critical reviews, special threads from the "old" imdb board, etc into an organized BBM library. My partner thinks I've completely lost it. I'm now on my 9th or 10th binder! I know down the road I'll get to reading all of it again, but right now, I'm still reading all the fan fic I can get my hands on. I only catalog ones I really like, and there are about a dozen in my library right now, some completed, some still works in progress.
If I had more $ and more wall space, another recent facination or fanaticism, is finding screen caps of my favorite shots. I print them out on a color laser printer, and they go into the scrapbooks as section dividers/headers. I uploaded one of my favorites to photofiddle.com and had them put an "oil painting" effect on it and digitally print it onto an 18" by 12" canvas. That one I'm going to stretch and hang on the wall.
I still have only watched the film three times completely through. It's still just too sad, and I act like the "walking wounded" (sorta like Ennis) for a couple of days afterward.
I'm really looking forward to seeing more of you guys at the BBQ in August. Making my travel plans this week.

Reading through this fantastic thread... it occurs to me that we really do all talk in a kind of BBM code. I LOVE it! These funny little phrases and references from the movie really make BetterMost feel like quite the exclusive club... We even have our own language!! Certain words and phrases will never seem the same to me again. Adorable. I find myself thinking in BBM-Speak all the time.

Me too! And I get a secret little thrill whenever I say something in ordinary conversation like "I swear" or "Tell you what" or "hunh" or "high-altitude f*ck" (OK, so I've never actually said that last one). ::)

Sorry, my comments are not adding much to this thread, but I always think that sadly, soon I'll be over BBM, but it isn't so! It goes on and on.. It's little things, but they are there!! Just yesterday there was a funny BBM-happening, but I'll disclose that in a seperate thread.. ;D

Oh, I still have the same life I had before I ever heard of the words "Brokeback Mountain."
Many of the expressions which Annie Proulx used in her short story, I had been using or had heard other people using them.
I do say that if a person has become so obsessed with a fiction story in movie form, where not even one historical fact that can be documented is mentioned, said person needs to see a licensed and certified mental health professional, such as a psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker or some other person with a therapy title.
Yes, I do say the obsessed with Brokeback Mountain persons do have a psychological problem. Oh, I am not an expert on psychology; but, since I took so many psychology related courses in university for both of my degrees, I was state-certified to teach a high school course in the subject.
All I have done since I read the book and later saw the movie has been to give examples from the movie and/or the book in internet discussions of the type that I have been involved in since the summer of 1998 when I first got on the internet.
Almost every issue raised or life situation in the movie can be discussed in one or more of the 10 Yahoo Groups which I created and are currently active.

I have had some off-the-board BetterMost Forums member discussions about how some of the members of this forum have let a fictional story take over their lives almost like they were possessed by a non-existent spirit.
Maybe since Jack's mother believed in the Pentecost and it has been documented with those involved in the movie production that she was a Pentecostal, maybe the special Holy Spirit gift of casting out unwanted spirits should be exercised.
Pentecostals don't practice the catholic rituals of exorcism; they just believe in laying hands on the possessed person and tell the unwanted spirit to leave in the Name of Jesus.

In all seriousness, I think discussing movies/books on the internet, or writing and reading fan fiction, or laughing at jokes that nobody else gets, are no worse as hobbies than, say, watching American Idol or the NBA play-offs. They're better activities, I think -- they work our emotions and our brains. They aren't passive activities.
And it's possible to eventually balance life and obsessions. (I'm still holding down a job, raising a kid, training to run a high-altitude marathon... I don't clean my house much, but I was never very good about that.)

They might say that a hobby or interest is only problematic when it impacts negatively on relationships and ability to function long term. They might also, in a completely off the record, casual sort of way, diagnose the vast majority of Brokies with a galloping case of sanity. It's blazingly apparent to me that (I'll use the quantifier again) the vast majority have clearly demonstrated significant POSITIVE change in their lives as a result of being touched by Brokeback Mountain.
Now, I'd like to ask you if you'd have us sit at home and wait to die, American Idol notwithstanding. Whether it's the hand of God at work, or simply a unique piece of art released into an unsuspecting world, I can't say, but either way it's all GOOD. Who gives a flying f*#ck about our Brokespeak, and our collectables, and our repeated viewings, and our foruming late into the night. None of those things, alone or together, amount to anything remotely approaching psychosis or even mild dysfunction.
Tell you what, the truth is, it could be like this, just like this, always. It'd be a sweet life, for what it's worth. For how long? Long as we can ride it. I'm posting four hours a day (don't want no game and fish catching me on no forum) and I'm gettin' tired of this dumbass missing. We can get together, way the hell out in the middle of the thread, but seeing eye to eye on this, no way.

With the greatest respect, tiawahcowboy, some of us (who shall ..... ahem .... remain nameless) have backgrounds in the real thing, ie, psychiatry. They might say that a hobby or interest is only problematic when it impacts negatively on relationships and ability to function long term. They might also, in a completely off the record, casual sort of way, diagnose the vast majority of Brokies with a galloping case of sanity. It's blazingly apparent to me that (I'll use the quantifier again) the vast majority have clearly demonstrated significant POSITIVE change in their lives as a result of being touched by Brokeback Mountain.

Hey, guys (Ihey were looking at a beautiful statue of Kaileya Krishna, their heads close together). No response. I crossed myself, ands said "Holy Mary, Mother of God, and the n called, louder: Let's git, unkles yiou wanna sit around tying knots all day." They slowkly turnee around, and approached my group of five, waiting for the rest of my architecture tour. "What did you say?, "one of them said. "Excuse my language," I said to the remainder of the ]group: "I;m trying to conduct an architecture tour here, is that a fuckin' proiblem?" "Can you do that all day?' the other one said. "Maybe not," I said,
"As I was sayging, George Sexton held out this pallette of colors to the curators, pastel colors, and said, I want each of you to chboose...."
Neither of them said anything for the remainder of ther tour, although they spent more time looking at me than thre archiutecture. At the end, one of them said 'See you around, I gyuess," and they walked out of my life.

It's all GOOD, except my psyhologist wants me to shell out $250 for a pasychiatrist to perscribe some anti-psychotic pills for...she uses the word "Manic," every time she addresses me in gvroup, and once oir twice in pivatre sessions.

I KNOW!! My kitten feels the same way about me! She's also mad that I've decided to call her a "fuzzy" much in the same manner as Aguirre calls the sheep "woolies." One of my new favorite vocab words.
These kittie situations sound familiar! They jump up and lie on my lap while i type away to get some attention.. Skimble - the one I affectionately call fat cat as he's huge compared to his brother! - actually say last night bolt upright on my lap and seemed to be staring at the screen.. I think he likes Jack and Ennis too.

I hear you Leslie. I still listen to NPR during my commute, but no nightly news for me too. I almost never missed an episode of The Sopranos, but I lost track of this season's episodes (partly because the season is not that good) since I can not pull myself away from the computer when the show is on.

I have managed to still have a life outside the realms of the Internet quite successfully I think. Maybe it's because most of the time I'm working on my dissertation in my computer, so it's not a real effort to be online and read the posting from time to time, as well as, snoop around and visit other sites. I still cook (I love cooking, that's one thing I have in common with Jake), I still go out with my friends, I still go to the movies,I read books before going to bed (although lately I've been reading Leslie's stories and others from fanfiction) but I watch less TV than I did before seeing Brokeback Mountain, to tell you the truth, but that it's good. Too much BS on TV anyway.

Sounds like you have found a really good balance, Natali. I am at the computer all day supposedly working, too, but that is only more temptation to hang out here instead.
I think a big factor for me is that I recently moved from one city to another, and I work out of my home, so now outside of my family members -- who often drive me crazy -- I have no good friends close by (a couple of very casual friends/acquaintances). So now you guys are the friends I see most often!

Thanks for the post! Yup, I'm Amanda. I'm in the U.S. (Pennsylvania). There was just a thing on the national news (NBC) about Bush's new big push for an amendment to ban gay marriage. The analysis on the news tended to say that Bush is trying to use the issue to bolster his really poor approval ratings right now... and to appeal to his deeply conservative base. It's extremely upsetting to me (it's upsetting on a general level, but on a personal level too. I'm a lesbian myself, so these issues tend to become really emotional).

The news about stuff like this juxtaposed simultaneously with all the awards and respect and acclaim for BBM is just so wierd. I mean here I am celebrating the big win for Heath and Jake on the MTV awards for their hot and romantic gay kiss... and then this depressing political news comes up on TV. This country truly has a split personality right now.

I like my new life quite a bit. Since I am no longer watching a verywin movie compulsively, I am working on myself and my issues. It is not all bluebirds singing and whiskey springs, but I feel like I am on the right path toward 'finishing the story' so that is as good as good as it is going to get.
Wouldn't it be great if there were maps to our individual Brokeback Mountains.
Guess I will kee fumbling along ...with a little help from my friends.
