Is there already an Anne Anne Anne thread? I couldn't find one.
I just saw a commercial with Anne Hathaway: she's the spokeswoman for the new Lancome fragrance "Magnifique".
She is beyond gorgeous, truly magnifique!

She could sell library paste!
LOL - so true! ;D I do admire Anne, I think she's a talented and beautiful actress and she's got a lot of style and class. Plus she seems like a nice person, and a woman with considerable staying power - given the recent turbulence in her life.
Has anyone seen "Get Smart"? I haven't, it hasn't premiered here yet.... but the trailer was shown here with Mamma Mia and it looks quite fun.
-

Well, I had to google 'library paste' LOL. Is that a common expression? Otherwise I have no idea how you'd go from Anne Hathaway to library paste.
I don't know this new fragrance. But I really like Lancôme's Trésor. Very nice perfume.

Yees! I loved Get Smart. Having grown up with the campy TV series, I was concerned. However, it was a lot of fun, and Anne was particularly elegant and deadpan as Agent 99.

Actually, Fabienne, I just made it up!
Apparently, Magnifique is unusual in that is has a woody base, not typical in a women's perfume.

She looks so Audrey Hepburn in this photo, but she certainly has a look of her own.
Gorgeous!

Finally! An Anne Anne Anne! Thread! I was wondering about that, too, and felt that this part of the board was a bit on the 'one-less' side. But now, hurray!
Btw, the pictures of Anne are lovely. She's very beautiful.

Heh, I've visited Anne Hathaway's cottage a couple of times. Even walked into her bedroom! My excuse is that she'd not been there herself for some considerable time.
But back to the other Anne.... did anyone see "Becoming Jane"? I very recently got hold of the DVD and watched it. I thought the story wasn't particularly riveting, tbh. It tried too much to prove that Jane Austen's real life provided direct inspiration for all her novels, and ended up rather flat when it wasn't overly melodramatic. But Anne did a great job with the material at hand, and it wasn't by any means a bad film. :)
-
Wow. The Anne cottage visitation must've been quite an experience for ya'. You're so lucky. :)
Btw, the "Becoming Jane" thing was wonderful and Anne did a good job in that movie. She's a good actress. I don't understand why she wasn't nominated for that movie even if she wasn't for this movie. Oh well.
But, kudos to her. :D

A bit of news from Yahoo:
Hathaway's dark role sparks early awards buzz
By Silvia Aloisi
VENICE (Reuters) - Anne Hathaway's dark role in "Rachel Getting Married," which premiered this week in Venice, is generating early Oscar buzz, with several critics hailing her departure from fairytale and comic characters.
In the family drama directed by Jonathan Demme, Hathaway plays Kym, a recovering drug addict who checks out of a rehabilitation center to attend her sister's wedding.
Her acerbic one-liners and need for attention serve as the catalysts for long-simmering family tensions to come to the boil, forcing her to confront her sense of guilt over the death of her little brother.
"An award-worthy Anne Hathaway gives the story a clear central focus," wrote the Hollywood Reporter, while rival trade publication Variety called her "fragile, angry, superb."
Hathaway, best known for her girl-next-door performances in "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada," told Reuters on Thursday it was too early to think about awards.
"It's the beginning of September and if I started being concerned about buzz now I would never make it through Christmas," Hathaway said in an interview.
"I could not be happier with this film, whatever happens to it. If it sinks at the box office, if it doesn't ever win an award, it's so successful in my mind," the 25-year-old added.
Hathaway has said Kym was the most complex role she had taken on so far.
Critics also praised Debra Winger's brief but intense performance in the film as the dysfunctional family's aloof mother. Screen Daily said three-time Oscar nominee Winger had made the small supporting role memorable.
"'Rachel Getting Married' will undoubtedly be up for awards consideration in the major categories," it wrote.
Most critics said the movie helped lift a weaker-than-usual lineup at the Venice film festival this year, and Hathaway's appearance on the red carpet gave the festival a welcome touch of Hollywood glamour.
Demme's previous films include 1991 thriller "The Silence of the Lambs," which won five Oscars, and 1993 AIDS drama "Philadelphia."

I saw a promo about 'Rachel Getting Married' on some entertainment program recently, and it looks really interesting! I'm excited to see Anne taking on another serious role or at least a more challenging role. I like her fun/ light movies, but I think she has a lot more potential as an actress (as we clearly saw in BBM) than some of the lighter roles seem to allow.
Also, this pic is just incredibly hot! :P

I saw a trailer for "Rachel Gets Married" and thought Anne was impressive in the clips. For someone who's often been quoted as being interested in getting out of the acting business, she certainly has been busy in films lately. :)
-
I heard that because "Rachel Gets Married", she's getting Oscar buzz! Seriously! And she's really good!

Anne in this amazing Versace gown in Venice recently! :o Everyone seems to be talking about this dress.

Rourke, Hathaway Light Up Patchy Venice Film Fest
By REUTERS
Published: September 5, 2008
Filed at 8:42 p.m. ET
VENICE (Reuters) - Mickey Rourke and Anne Hathaway are among the favorites to win top actor and actress prizes at the Venice film festival awards ceremony on Saturday, while the race for the coveted Golden Lion for best picture is wide open.
The 11-day cinema showcase in the canal city has been under fire for what critics said was a generally weak selection of 21 films in the main competition, but three strong U.S. entries towards the end have helped lift spirits.
Rourke gave what critics have called the performance of his life in Darren Aronofsky's "The Wrestler," in which he plays a lonely, washed out fighter whose story poignantly mirrors the Hollywood outsider's own troubled past.
"I can honestly say right now, the best ... movie I've ever made is this," Rourke told Reuters before attending a press briefing where he received a rare standing ovation.
Hathaway also impressed in her unusually dark role in "Rachel Getting Married," Jonathan Demme's touching wedding drama that has been lauded in Venice.
A third late entry, "The Hurt Locker" by U.S. director Kathryn Bigelow, leads an informal poll of Italian critics who were impressed by its portrayal of the perils faced by a bomb disposal unit in Iraq led by a reckless sergeant.
The U.S. trio faces stiff competition from Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, who charmed critics and the public alike with his touching cartoon "Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea," a re-telling of "The Little Mermaid" fairytale.
Were Miyazaki to walk off with the Golden Lion, it would be the fourth year in a row an Asian director had done so.
FIRST AFRICAN WINNER?
Ethiopian entry "Teza" is in the frame for the top prize, and would be the first African picture to win in Venice, the world's oldest film festival where the jury is notoriously difficult to second guess.
Haile Gerima's powerful tale of an intellectual who flees violence and alienation in his native Ethiopia and Germany, would be a generally popular winner on the Lido waterfront.
The Italian press is hoping for a first home win in 10 years with "Birdwatchers," a depiction of native Indians with no prospects other than working in slave-like conditions for rich farmers and posing for tourists' cameras.
Venice has a reputation as a launchpad for successful award campaigns, although in a year when director Marco Mueller has been under fire for his selection, relatively few Academy Award contenders emerged beyond Rourke and Hathaway.
Also impressive was Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron in "The Burning Plain," an intense story of love and betrayal in the directorial debut by Mexican screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga.
The Coen brothers opened this year's festival with "Burn After Reading," which was out of competition but ensured that Hollywood A-listers Brad Pitt and George Clooney were on the red carpet in a festival otherwise lacking star power.

Hathaway, best known for her girl-next-door performances in "The Princess Diaries" and "The Devil Wears Prada,"
Wait a minute! This was posted yesterday on page 2, and there are now 28 pages of posts?
What I wanted to say is that it's probably true that Anne is best known for those two movies, or Get Smart. Funny she didn't get the same attention for our little film is the other three principals did.

Anne Hathaway: ‘I’d go Gay For Cate Blanchett
The Devil Wears Prada star — who recently split from boyfriend Raffaello Follieri — says if she ever decided to change her sexuality then the Aussie actress would be her perfect pairing.
She says, “If I was going to go gay for another actress it would have to be Cate Blanchett.
“Absolutely! We could talk about a theater and she has played a guy really well so if I got bored that’d be nice.”
Hathway, 25, recently revealed her split from Italian businessman Follieri — who was recently arrested on fraud and money laundering charges — has made her a stronger person.
She said, “The worst thing that happens to you can be the best thing, if you don’t let it get the best of you.”

I'll echo Meryl here and say Wow indeed!!
LOL, when I went to bed last night this thread was only about 5 pages long! This is so great! Thanks for all these contributions Love!
:)
I think it's a great idea to draw attention in special threads to all the great actors and actresses in BBM, in addition to Heath and Jake.

Thanks Love! I really, really like Lureen too. I think she can be a really interesting complex character to think about and discuss. I think her decisions in what she tells and encourages Ennis about on the phone are truly fascinating and reveal an impressive level of generosity in her character, even given all the heartache and bitterness that have crept into her life by that stage.
There are some good threads in Open Forum about Lureen, but I think there is certainly room for more over there. For one, I recommend the old thread called "Female Sexuality in BBM" includes some pretty interesting discussions about all the women in the movie with some interesting observations about Lureen. http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,8654.0.html (http://bettermost.net/forum/index.php/topic,8654.0.html)
Anyway, Lureen is suce a good role for Anne too, because it shows just how serious of an actress she can be. I'm really excited about Rachel Getting Married. It looks very interesting.

Mille grazie, Love!! Wow, what a lovely tribute to our Anne. So many hours of work for you!
Speaking of Anne and the color red, I have Lureen's red cowgirl hat from the film, a prized possession.
By the way, I think your myspace is brilliant.

Did anyone see E!News last night? They featured a bit about Anne in Toronto, and again were really complimentary about her choice of fashion here.
And, they had a nice on-camera/ sit-down interview (very quick though) with Anne talking about how she's not letting the drama in her personal life right now define her... and how she's focusing on other things, like her new movie, as much as possible. She always comes across as so level headed. I feel really bad for her having to deal with all the scandal surrounding her creepy ex-boyfriend.

Anne was on E!News and the Daily 10 again today. The media (at least as far as E! goes) is being really supportive and positive about Anne following the fiasco with her ex-boyfriend. The pieces I've seen them run about her the last couple days have been very respectful and sympathetic.
Today they featured more of her on-camera/ sit down interview where she's talking a bit about what happened and how she's holding up. In the clips they showed today she was talking about how supportive her co-stars have been from the various movies (Get Smart and now Rachel Getting Married) that she's had to go out and promote during the heat of the scandal with her ex. She talked about how they've tried to help shield her from prying reporters on occasion, etc. She also said she's been throwing herself into work to try to almost distract herself from the scandal. But, it sounds like it's been very draining on her (understandably of course).

Anne had to give back jewelry. How embarrassing. What did she ever see in this guy?
"Anne Hathaway's reputation wasn't the only thing dinged by former boyfriend Raffaello Follieri's underhanded business dealings. Seems her jewelry box also took a hit. The Smoking Gun reports that the FBI recently "recovered" several "lavish" baubles bestowed upon the actress by her con artist ex, who is expected to spend at least five years in the pokey after pleading guilty this week to wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy. Among the items that Hathaway, who's not mentioned by name in court documents, purportedly handed over to the feds: two Rolex watches -- one gold, one silver; two gold rings, one with "clear stones," which may be FBI-speak for diamonds; a five-strand pearl necklace; a silver bracelet dotted with "clear stones"; and a silver chain with a cross and "blue and clear stones." Anne opens up in the October issue of W about her breakup with Follieri after four years of togetherness, explaining, "It's a situation where the rug was pulled out from under me all of a sudden. But just as suddenly, my friends threw another rug back under me." She then tearfully notes, "I've been shown such kindness. Not everyone gets that. A lot of people go through tough times alone." "

"Anne Hathaway's Diva Ways"
While Anne Hathaway's character Andy in The Devil Wears Prada lets herself get wrapped up in the glitz and glam of fashion, she ultimately rejects the diva way of life.
But lately, rumors of high-maintenance requests have swirled around the actress, making many wonder whether Anne is taking a cue from a different character from the popular movie about a demanding boss and those who serve her.
After delaying a day of interviews with just her breakfast order, Anne is beginning to resemble editrix Miranda Priestly instead of down-to-earth Andy.
“Anne requested lattes but only ones with soy milk, so she made a guy go out and bring
back five soy lattes for her and her crew,” a source tells OK! of the Rachel Getting Married event at the Hollywood life House in Toronto on Sept. 6.
“Then she requested scrambled eggs since she didn’t like the breakfast available. The same guy had to go to a restaurant next door and ask for the eggs. It took 45 minutes, and then she barely even touched them!”

Here's a skit where she plays a different sort of Mary Poppins (she can sing too!):

Anne Not Getting Married:
Building on her "characters having to do with weddings" buzz, Anne Hathaway will star in The Fiancé, to be directed by Burr Steers (episodes of Big Love) for Warner Bros. Story, freshly rewritten by Tropic Thunder 's Etan Cohen, follows a woman who cancels her wedding plans so she can discover herself, but her meddling parents try to patch things up with her "perfect husband," presumably the Vatican CFO. Anne Hathaway to star in 'Fiance'
Warner Bros. taps actress for romantic comedy

Steers
Warner Bros. has set Anne Hathaway to star and Burr Steers to direct the romantic comedy “The Fiance.” Studio is eyeing a March production start.
Pic will be produced by Offspring Entertainment partners Adam Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot.
A rewrite of “Fiance” script is being done by Etan Cohen, the “Tropic Thunder” scribe who just turned in a script for the Judd Apatow-produced comedy to star Sacha Baron Cohen as Sherlock Holmes and Will Ferrell as Watson. “The Fiance” was originally scripted by Dyanne Stempel and Jennifer Robinson.
Hathaway will play a woman who cancels wedding plans and breaks up with her seemingly perfect fiance so she can try to figure out who she really is. Her meddling parents try to patch things up between the pair, making it impossible for her to move on.
The comedy was originally set up at Disney. After the studio dropped it, Gibgot got Hathaway interested as well as Steers, and suddenly four studios were vying for it. Shankman and Gibgot just produced “17 Again,” the Zac Efron starrer that Steers directed for New Line.
WB will likely put “Fiance” in production in March, so Hathaway can follow it by re-teaming with Steve Carell in WB’s “Get Smart” sequel.
Hathaway, onscreen in Sony Pictures Classics’ “Rachel Getting Married,” is shooting the Tim Burton-directed “Alice in Wonderland.”
Hathaway next will be seen in the Gary Winick-directed Fox 2000 comedy “Bride Wars” alongside Kate Hudson.

Anne Hathaway's ex-boyfriend faces sentencing
By Christine Kearney
NEW YORK (Reuters) - Raffaello Follieri had what some men only dream of: a millionaire's lifestyle full of exotic vacations, a luxury apartment and a famous actress by his side -- all humbled by a purported deep Catholic faith.
But on Thursday, the Italian con-man is due in federal court for sentencing and faces a prison term less than four months after his girlfriend of four years, movie star Anne Hathaway, left him and he was arrested for fraud.
The case reads like a Hollywood film, with the 30-year-old from Foggia, Italy, aggressively pursuing money and celebrity while flaunting religious ties to further his lavish lifestyle.
Hathaway, who starred in "The Devil Wears Prada," broke her silence last month, telling W magazine she felt like "a rug was pulled out from under me" when Follieri was arrested in June.
The floppy-haired Follieri pleaded guilty last month to profiting $2.4 million from a scheme that exaggerated Vatican ties to mislead investors, including California supermarket billionaire Ron Burkle, into thinking he could buy the Catholic Church's real estate at cheaper prices.
Prosecutors want him to serve more than five years in prison. This week they said in court papers he had been motivated by greed as he "shamelessly" mislead investors and church officials, including having two monsignors travel with him on some money-seeking quests.
He used the money to pay for expensive clothes, restaurants, a $37,000-a-month Manhattan apartment, exotic vacations and privately chartered flights for his parents and girlfriend, said prosecutors.
'DEEPLY RELIGIOUS'
Follieri "succumbed to the temptation" of wealth and luxury, defense lawyer Flora Edwards said in a recent sentencing memo that asked for a three-year sentence.
Follieri's "deeply religious" faith and values were cited as reasons he should receive a lesser sentence, as well to speed up his deportation back to Italy to tend to an aging, sick mother. More than 100 letters, including from priests in Foggia, were offered in support.
But prosecutors say Follieri's web of lies began in 2004 by forming a company with his father, who in 2005 was found guilty in Italy of embezzling funds.
In May 2005, the younger Follieri began lying to Burkle's group, Yucaipa Companies, including telling them he needed a luxury New York apartment to house visiting dignitaries, according to the prosecutors' sentencing memo.
Losses to Yucaipa included more than $911,000 for phony reports, $985,000 for unauthorized expenses, $739,000 for flights, $600,000 for unauthorized medical expenses and $430,000 for a nonexistent Italy office, the memo said.
His phony Vatican ties included showing investors a fake letter from late Pope John Paul II and telling investors he regularly met with the pope when in Rome, the memo said.
By the time of his arrest, prosecutors said, after successfully creating shell companies with overseas bank accounts, he had extended his scheme as far as Brazil and had started a similar scheme in Europe.
In the end, they said, Follieri did bid at auctions of church properties in the United States, but lost out to higher bidders from competing real estate companies.

Anne Hathaway's New Boyfriend - Adam Shulman
Wednesday November 5, 2008
Anne Hathaway's ex, Raffaello Follieri, will be spending the next 4 1/2 years behind bars so the chances of a reunion are slim at best. Anne didn't waste any time getting over him before moving on to a new man. According to reports from Life & Style, she has been getting very cozy with actor Adam Shulman.
The two were spotted together in New Orleans at a screening of Anne's new flick, Rachel Getting Married. Adam told the tabloid, "We met through mutual friends. I came to support Anne. We've never been to New Orleans before - it's our first time." I wonder how Anne will feel about the fact that he already used the terms "we" and "our" in his statement.
Either way, the real gossip here is that Adam allegedly left his girlfriend to run off into the sunset with Anne. Remind you of anyone else? Brad and Angelina, Billy Crudup and Claire Danes, and Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott come to mind - just to name a few.

Hathaway, Cross to appear at inaugural ball
Elvis Costello, Sting and Sam Moore will provide the tunes
WASHINGTON - Roll out the red carpet! Papparazzi, ready your cameras! Hollywood and rock stars are bringing their own razzle-dazzle to President-elect Barack Obama’s inauguration.
Anne Hathaway, Susan Sarandon, Marcia Cross, Tim Robbins, Seal, Adrian Grenier, Ashley Judd, Jane Krakowski, Rachael Leigh Cook, Blair Underwood and directors Spike Lee and Ron Howard are confirmed. And that’s just a partial list of the hosts for an unofficial inaugural ball.
Elvis Costello is the headliner and rock stars Sting and Sam Moore will also appear, according to The Creative Coalition. The ball is a fundraising event for the nonprofit arts and entertainment advocacy group.
The event will kick off in Washington’s Harman Center of the Arts the night of Jan. 20, when Obama is sworn is as the nation’s 44th president. Musical guests are scheduled to perform until midnight.
Besides the star-studded lineup, confirmed hosts also include members of Congress as well as policy, media and business leaders.
This won’t be the only celebrity ball for the inauguration, which typically attracts plenty of glitzy affairs. Events across Washington are expected to be attended by plenty of A-listers and political power players.

The Canniest Starlet
in Hollywood
It Girl(s)
The three sides of Anne Hathaway.
By Dana Stevens
Posted Friday, Jan. 30, 2009, at 6:46 PM ET
If Anne Hathaway wins the best actress Oscar next month for her role as a recovering drug addict in Rachel Getting Married, it will be a big upset: Popular wisdom is divided between Meryl Streep for Doubt and Kate Winslet for The Reader, and it's heavily weighted toward Winslet (though Hathaway did recently tie with Streep for a Critic's Choice award). But Hathaway has already bested her fellow nominees in at least one category: She is the canniest image-manager currently working in Hollywood.
The recent news that Hathaway will voice a character on a two-part Simpsons episode cinched my theory that the woman is the Itzhak Perlman of popular opinion. She will play Krusty the Clown's girlfriend, who testifies on his behalf after the corrupt clown is accused of a crime. The role, of course, is designed to mock Hathaway's much-publicized breakup with Italian financier Raffaello Follieri, who was arrested in June on 14 counts of fraud, conspiracy, and money laundering. When she hosted Saturday Night Live in October, Hathaway opened the show by poking fun at her own naivete, boasting that her new boyfriend was a Nigerian prince who'd sent her an unsolicited e-mail requesting her Social Security number: "How sweet is that?" Both the Simpsons role and the SNL monologue share a sly, have-it-both-ways approach to Hathaway's image burnishing: She makes fun of her own gullibility while reminding audiences that she's clever enough to know her ex played her for a fool.
In the half-year since the Follieri scandal, Hathaway has managed to become a staple of tabloid news without ever seeming lowered by it. In July, W praised Hathaway for getting her "chic revenge." In August, she began appearing as the spokesmodel for a new Lancôme fragrance, Magnifique (Lancôme being the endorsement gig for high-class actresses; past spokesfaces have included Isabella Rossellini, Uma Thurman, Juliette Binoche, and Kate Winslet). And the three major Hathaway films that have come out since mid-2008—Get Smart, Rachel Getting Married, and Bride Wars—have each highlighted a different part of her public persona.
There's a) the naive, adorable princess in need of protection; b) the sophisticated fashion plate, a post-transformation Eliza Doolittle; and c) the fun-loving tomboy who's just one of the guys. Hathaway's best roles combine two or more of these types: In The Devil Wears Prada and The Princess Diaries, she morphs from insecure but lovable A into elegant and self-confident B. Get Smart is a combination of types B and C, with Hathaway outspying and outshooting everyone in sight and looking like Diana Rigg all the while. The unfortunate Bride Wars combines the worst aspects of the B and C personae: Hathaway's stylishness becomes a shallow obsession with clothes, and her tomboyish feistiness descends into mean-girl bitchery. (Amazingly, Hathaway has risen above the awful press accorded to this widely loathed movie, currently ranked at 14 percent on RottenTomatoes.com (http://RottenTomatoes.com).) And Rachel Getting Married, her most challenging role to date, brings together all three Annes in the person of Kym, a vulnerable, foul-mouthed, chain-smoking ex-junkie who, even on break from hard-core rehab, manages to look and dress like Edie Sedgwick.
Hathaway's public appearances seem carefully orchestrated to alternate among these three roles. Type A, the damsel in distress, was much in evidence at the Critics' Choice awards early this month, where Hathaway thanked her father, saying "he protects me and has shown me that there are good men in this world and lets me know every day that I am worthy of the love of good people." On the one hand: Aww. On the other: Nicely done. In one sentence, she discreetly reminded us of the past year's woes, implied that she's moved on to better things (suck it, Raffaello!), and looked very sweet and filial in the bargain. The very next night, Hathaway C—just-one-of-the-guys Annie—was flinging double entendres on the Jimmy Kimmel show. (Naughty Annie also had a memorable exchange with Frank Langella on a recent Newsweek Oscar panel.) And Hathaway B, the impeccably turned-out clotheshorse, rears her head every time another fashion column praises her tasteful-yet-whimsical choices on the red carpet. (There are exceptions: The ever-honest Fug Girls, who generally admire Hathaway's style, compared one recent getup to "a series of high-end bathmats sewn together.")
What does all this image-management savvy have to do with Hathaway's skill as an actress? That's the thing: Hathaway is so smart about choosing roles, promoting them, and winning our sympathy off-screen that it's sort of hard to tell how gifted an actor she really is. Rachel Getting Married is certainly the furthest she's stretched yet, and she's very winning in a role that could easily have been overplayed. But I'd argue that the movie's power derives mainly from its ensemble cast and Jonathan Demme's nimble, roving hand-held camera. Next year, Hathaway will play an ambivalent bride-to-be in The Fiance (sounds like a princessy A role) and the White Queen in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland. (With that director, it's bound to be an elaborately costumed B.) I'd love to see her take on something, anything, completely outside the Hathaway canon: a schlumpily dressed, unprincesslike, unfeisty schmo. (Wait, she could play me!)
As OK! magazine clucked approvingly in an item on Hathaway's recent double date with new boyfriend Adam Shulman and John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Hathaway's Devil Wears Prada co-star, a good time on the town is "something the brunette beauty definitely deserves after her recent heartbreak over ex Raffaello Follieri." I couldn't agree more: another round of tapas for all! But I'm not sure Hathaway's lousy romantic luck in 2008, or her admirable gift for earning our goodwill, should be enough to earn her an Oscar.

That's a great article, thanks John. 8)
I was curious and googled the Newsweek Oscar panel. Here's the link:
http://www.newsweek.com/id/180867
It's a series of nine 6-7 minute videos of a roundtable discussion with Anne, Frank Langella, Mickey Rourke, Robert Downey, Jr., Brad Pitt and Sally Hawkins. I think the exchange with Anne and Frank that they're talking about is in the one titled "I've been trustworty almost 1500 days." You'll see why. ;)
The whole series is well worth watching! 8)

Meryl, it's amazing, thank you!
The full roundtable is about an hour, and it is so worthwhile. (The actors' comments about Obama and the election, and Anne's anecdote in particular, well--just go.)
The internet is a wonderful, wonderful thing.

Anne Hathaway to Star in Shakespeare in the Park’s
‘Twelfth Night’

This Anne Hathaway — not the one who was married to the playwright — will star in Shakespeare in the Park’s production of
“Twelfth Night.”
She’s not the first Anne Hathaway linked to Shakespeare — when you last saw this one in Central Park she was most likely racing to complete an errand for the tyrannical Miranda Priestly in “The Devil Wears Prada.” But this summer, you’ll be able to see Ms. Hathaway in the Shakespeare in the Park production of “Twelfth Night,” in which she will play Viola, the Public Theater said in a news release. The play, directed by Daniel Sullivan, will run from June 9 through July 12 at the Delacorte Theater. The season’s second production will be Euripides’ “The Bacchae,” directed by JoAnne Akalaitis and featuring music by Philip Glass.

OMG! This sounds so cool! It would be such a great Brokie event. I'd love to attend. And, maybe we should wrangle a little Brokie get-together for this. Shakespeare in the Park sounds like so much fun in any case, it's something I'd love to experience.

This summer kicks off with a powerhouse production of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. The Public welcomes Academy Award Nominee Anne Hathaway as she makes her Public Theater debut playing Viola, one of the canon’s most charming heroines. This beguiling comedy follows the romantic adventures of Viola and her identical twin Sebastian, both shipwrecked in the enchanted dukedom of Illyria. At the helm of this time-honored story of cross-dressing and mistaken identity, all in the name of love, is Tony Award winning Director Daniel Sullivan.

I'm watching the Barbara Walters interview with Anne right now (in the pre-Oscars interview special) and she just mentioned Heath and Brokeback very briefly.
Hopefully, YouTubes will be forthcoming!

One of Anne's Lancome advertisements (she was gorgeous!) was on the back of the Delta in-flight magazine, so I toted a couple of copies across NYC...She stayed with Roux and me the whole trip.

Anne is such a beautiful old hollywood woman. She is simply breathtaking in every red carpet appearance. She looks good in anything
she wears. She is on a par with Angelina Jolie. They both can wear anything and knock it out of the park. Her acting is absolutely
breathtaking. She is going to be around for a long long time. Regardless of what you think of Angelina, she wears clothes perfectly.
I sure would like to see her in the part of Lola, in Damn Yankees with Jake, and Jim Carrey. That would be genius casting. I dont know
if everyone else would be for it, either her or even the director, because they were already in BBM together. But I think it would be
knocking that movie up to the stratosphere in casting. hope so..........

A dream part is awaiting over the rainbow:
Anne Hathaway in talks to play Judy Garland

Anne Hathaway is hoping to play Judy Garland
Hollywood starlet Anne Hathaway is in talks to play her movie idol Judy Garland in an upcoming film based on Gerald Clarke’s biography, Get Happy: The Life of Judy Garland. The 26-year-old actress is so desperate to appear in the movie – which charts Judy’s rise to fame and her struggle with drink and drugs – that she may have to sacrifice other projects, which include a lead role in a comedy called The Fiance. The Weinstein Company has optioned the film and stage rights to the Garland story.
A Tinseltown insider says: ‘Anne dearly wants to do a musical and this could be her chance.'The big attraction is that it really will be her singing, not recordings of Judy. She is determined to do it justice.
'If she nails the part, she will be a shoo-in for some big awards.’

Possible new project for Anne Hathaway playing the bride in a remake of THE BRIDE OF FRANKENSTEIN. Can she hiss as shockingly as Elsa Lanchester did in the original version? :o When I first read the article, I thought no way Anne as Frankenstein's bride. Then I see the photo posted by LOVE showing Anne all pasty faced and vampiric looking. Well Anne is definitely trying to prove she's a versatile actress if she takes on that project.
http://www.thecinemapost.com/2009/06/21/scarlett-johansson-or-anne-hathaway-for-bride-of-frankenstein/
"06.21.09, In Movies, by Paul Larn
New speculation about the upcoming ‘Bride Of Frankenstein’ remake suggests that producer Brian Grazer has starlets Scarlett Johansson and Anne Hathaway at the top of his list to play The Bride. More after the jump.
The NY Post suggests that insiders believe that producer Brian Glazer is eyeing either Scarlett Johansson or Anne Hathaway to reprise the role of Frankenstein’s Bride, first portrayed by the beautiful Elsa Lanchester in 1935.
“She’ll be young. They’re looking for a person with great power and sex appeal” say insiders, according to The Post.
I could perhaps see Scarlett Jo’ as ‘The Bride’, but I’m not sure about Anne. To be honest, I have a hard time visualizing anyone but Elsa in the role, so I wouldn’t be shocked if they are probably quite some time from announcing just who will get the role. It could well end up going to an unknown.
What do you think? Any suggestions or ideas for actresses you could imagine in the role?
“The Illusionist” director Neil Burger will helm the new project. Check out our original story about the remake that we brought you last week, with much more information."

We did it! On the very last day of the run, John and I got tickets for Anne in Twelfth Night. We only had to get there at 2:00 a.m. and wait for 12 hours! :P :P :P
The time went fast, though, because the company was good. Also, the comfy folding chairs we toted along saved our aching feet and backs!
More reports to follow tomorrow. Right now I'm hitting the hay to catch up on some sleep! 8) 8) 8)

Anne Hathaway: Digging on Jake Gyllenhaal?
Though she’s officially dating struggling actor Adam Shulman, Anne Hathaway may have a hankering for newly-single Jake Gyllenhaal.
According to a report, the “Princess Diaries” babe and the “Prince of Persia: Sands of Time” hunk have grown super-close while filming “Love and Other Drugs” together.
An inside source told press, “Jake and Anne get along like a house on fire. They’ve become extremely close. Jake feels he can talk to Anne about anything, including his struggles with Reese. She’s been his shoulder to cry on and a great listener.”
But Jake’s recent split with Ms. Witherspoon may be a symptom of his attraction to Miss Hathaway. “Anne was deeply shocked when Jake dumped Reese. She thinks Jake is so sweet. Who knows where this could lead?”

Reputed paparazzo on bike hits Anne Hathaway's car
December 17, 2009 | 5:47 pm
Some people will do anything for a photograph.
According to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, a man believed to be a paparazzo did exactly that when he smashed his bicycle into the side of a car owned by actress Anne Hathaway.
The Oscar-nominated actress was in an Audi driven by boyfriend Adam Shulman when the collision occurred shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday near Westbourne Drive and Santa Monica Boulevard in West Hollywood, said sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.
The accident occurred as Hathaway's car was making a turn. Neither Hathaway, who starred in "The Princess Diaries," nor Shulman was injured.
The reputed paparazzo, who was not identified, refused medical treatment and left. His road bike was a Viola 24-speed, authorities said.
Witnesses told sheriff's investigators that the cyclist was moving "way too fast and could have avoided an accident," Whitmore said. No arrest was made, however.
Asked how he knew that the man was, in fact, a paparazzo, Whitmore said he had a large, telephoto lens on "a high-end still camera."
"If he's not a paparazzo, he's an avid bird watcher," Whitmore said.

Hathaway Quits Catholicism
for Gay Brother
By Advocate.com (http://Advocate.com) Editors
(http://advocate.com/uploadedImages/hathaway.jpg)
Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway tells GQ magazine she and her parents have left the Catholic Church because of the religion's views on gay issues. Hathaway, whose brother is gay, says she and her parents became Episcopalians shortly after he came out.
"The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out,” she said. “Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?"
Hathaway, who has been a vocal champion of gay rights since starring in Brokeback Mountain, says she isn’t quite at home with the Episcopal Church either: "So I'm ... nothing [no denomination]. F**k it, I'm forming. I'm a work in progress.”

Queen of all she surveys
(http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/girls/cover_girls/slideshows/100201-anne-hathaway.aspx14174ss_image62045.jpg)
From Disney teen princess to divine ruler in Tim Burton's new Alice In Wonderland blockbuster: Anne Hathaway is a true Hollywood blue blood. Paradoxically, she's also the go-to girl-next-door, as smart as she is sexy and as admired by women as she is adored by men. Here, Queen Anne grants GQ an exclusive audience and talks Scientology, Scrabble, quantum physics... oh, and the secret art of on-screen undressing
Anne Hathaway is no Angelina Jolie. The big difference? She's non-threatening. Or at least she is from your seat at the local multiplex. You see, women love Anne Hathaway. Ask any woman within reach. Ask a friend. Ask the pretty waitress in Scott's (http://www.scotts-restaurant.com/). Ask your mother; your sister; your grandmother. See, told you - they simply adore her. Can you ever imagine your girlfriend calling out (as mine did), "Tell her that I love her!" as you head off to catch a plane to go and have lunch with, say, Miss Jolie? I very much doubt it. Angelina is far too threatening; too dangerous; too wily.
But little, doe-eyed, butter-wouldn't-melt Annie Hathaway? She's so cute! She's a girl's girl, she's every woman's BFF. She's chummy. She's fun. She's Carrie Bradshaw's crib notes on what girlfriends are there for. She's the woman who had every girl's dream job (and wardrobe) in The Devil Wears Prada. She's Becoming Jane. She's Bride Wars. She's The Princess Diaries, for Christ's sake! She's every insecure, needy woman's Empress of Empathy. She's a large tub of chocolate-chip, cookie-dough ice cream with Maltesers sprinkles. She's Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's. She's the Coldplay singles box sets rather than Lady Gaga's The Fame Monster. She's safe. She's sweet. Right? Right?
Well, if Anne Hathaway - 27, from the quiet, affluent suburb of Millburn, New Jersey - is so prim, so naive, so wide-eyed and so innocent, then what on God's earth is she doing sitting opposite me, mid-way through a long, hot, lazy lunch in Los Angeles, flashing her hazel eyes while gently tonguing, yes, tonguing, the back of her china-white palm like a tip-hungry stripper at Le Crazy Horse (http://www.lecrazyhorseparis.com/)? It's an act that's head-swimmingly discombobulating. The actress' supposed façade of niceness has been pulled back - just for a split second - to reveal something far, far wilder. For Anne it's her very own SuBo (http://www.blogtactic.com/2009/11/can-subo-deliver-goods.html) moment.
"We were talking about kissing," I offer clumsily, shattering the crackling sexual menace in a voice that, on hearing the words aloud, suddenly sounds about as come-hither as a car's sat-nav command. Anne, perhaps sensing my inability to form a proper sentence, takes the lead: "You have to leave your mouth open a little bit..." she purrs, making me squirm into uncharted levels of prudishness, closing her eyes and smudging her plump red lips against her own left hand, which she's holding tenderly with her right as she might the face of a co-star. "Open up," Anne suggests breathlessly as the earth seems to spin ever so slightly faster on its axis. "More, more, ever so lightly... otherwise you're going to be getting smooshy," she advises. "Now... slow it down... just a little bit..."
Sadly, here endeth the lesson on "How To Screen Kiss Successfully With Anne Hathaway". I come round, somewhat sheepishly, my cheeks flushed and my eyes glazed. "If you're both unattached and you get along, of course kissing in a movie is fun," she tells me. "But you can never get truly deep down and into it. Well, I can't. Jennifer Garner - now that girl can movie kiss. I gotta say that girl can really give it some up there..."

Anne Hathaway Leaves Catholic Church
for Gay Brother
2/8/10 at 5:15 PM
(http://nymag.com/images/2/daily/2010/02/20100208_hathawaygq_250x330.jpg)
Anne Hathaway, who has been a part of the gay-rights movement since even before she co-starred in the landmark film Brokeback Mountain, told British GQ this month that she and her traditionally Catholic family left the Church over its views on homosexuality. Having a gay family member was enough to make them, like many other families, feel unwelcome. "The whole family converted to Episcopalianism after my elder brother came out,” she told the magazine. “Why should I support an organization that has a limited view of my beloved brother?" Though, in all honesty, after Hathaway's ex-boyfriend Raffaello Follieri embroiled the Vatican in a scandal over their seeming involvement in the convicted fraud's phony real-estate scheme, we're not sure the Church was so sad to see her go.

Anne Hathaway says she has weird features and she's not pretty
The Valentine's Day beauty claims she has "weird features" that are too big for her "small head" but says that she's learned to live with herself.
She told InStyle: "I think I've got really weird features, I have very large features on a very small head, but I'm not going to beat myself up, it's my face - I'm not very pretty, but that's OK because I look like myself, and I think at the end of the day, as nice as pretty is, authenticity is more important."
The 27-year-old Devil Wears Prada star also said she has to work hard to keep her body in shape.
"If I don't work out at all, I have too much curve and no tone, which is not OK. It's about finding balance," she said.
Anne - who names Tilda Swinton, Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, Selma Blair and Natalie Portman as her style icons - has a strong fashion sense and likes to balance a tomboy daytime look with being glammed up in the evening.
She told the magazine: "In the evening it would never occur to me to go out in motorcycle boots like this. I love going out in high heels and dressing up and glamming it up, and having there be a distinction between what happened throughout the day and the evening.
"I like people who are true to themselves."
-

I hate it when gorgeous, beautiful, talented people say stuff like this. I don't for a minute believe they're sincere. Even if their self-confidence is not always at the max, the ones they're comparing themselves to are the most stunningly good-looking people on earth, and certainly no average gals - and well do they know it. It's just a form of faux-bashful attention-grabbing. My opinion of Anne is plummeting to new lows if she really did say this. :-\
-
Anne really does have a small head. I can attest, as I have her bright red cowgirl hat. It's tiny. I don't think it has fit anyone who has tried it on, except Fabienne's little daughter!

Did anyone else happen to notice? Last night on Jeopardy! there was a whole category devoted to Anne!
When Alex Trebek announced the category as having to do with Anne Hathaway, I was expecting something Shakespearean. But no, it was all about Anne. :D
One of the "answers" was something about "having a child with Jake Gyllenhaal," who was prepared to "quit" her. ;D Of course, the question was "What is Brokeback Mountain?"

from Belfast Telegraph yesterday:
Anne Hathaway to play Barbarella?
Friday, 10 December 2010
Anne Hathaway has been linked to the Barbarella remake
Anne Hathaway is apparently set to play Barbarella in the remake of the 1968 cult classic.
The Devil Wears Prada star is "attached" to the project to reboot the sexy sci-fi fantasy film, Pajiba.com reports.
The original was directed by Frenchman Roger Vadim and starred Jane Fonda as space ranger Barbarella, who despite her sexy appearance and skimpy outfits, has a prudish attitude to life until she finds herself sexually awakened during her mission to rescue Dr Duran Duran.
The remake has long been in the pipeline with Underworld star Kate Beckinsale originally tipped to star.
Machete director Robert Rodriguez took over the project in 2007 and cast his then fiancee Rose McGowan in the title role.
But Robert stepped down from directing the movie last year, reportedly because Universal's plans to shoot in Germany would take him too far from his family in Texas. He has five children with his ex wife.
Legally Blonde director Robert Luketic was rumoured to be attached last year but the project currently has no director.

Anne Hathaway: 'Glee' Guest Star Role Confirmed
Anne Hathaway didn't win a Golden Globe on Sunday, but may have gotten something even more exciting: a self-designed guest role on 'Glee.'
The 'Love & Other Drugs' star told Jimmy Fallon in November that she wanted to guest on 'Glee,' and series co-creator Ryan Murphy met up with Hathaway and made it happen at the big awards show.
"She walked by our table and we have a mutual friend and I said, 'Do you really want to do it?' And she said, 'I do.' And I said, 'OK, we're gonna do it,'" Murphy told Access Hollywood.
"I think we'll do it probably in a month and a half or so... I have to talk to Anne about what she wants to sing. I'm sure she has ideas," he said. "I'm excited about that."
Actually, Hathaway has more than ideas: she's got the whole thing planned out.
"In my head, I've written a part for myself on 'Glee.'" she told Fallon. "In my head I've cast myself on 'Glee' and I know what song I'd sing... I would wanna play Kurt's long-lost aunt, his mother's sister who is also gay, who comes back to help him deal with his sexuality, and I would sing, 'You Are Not Alone,'" a song from Stephen Sondheim's 'Into The Woods.'

Friend of mine who knows I love Brokeback came by Thursday night, brought me the March Oscar edition of Vanity Fair magazine.
Who was on the front of the tri-fold cover, but Anne, looking gorgeous, with her arm draped over Jake, looking dapper, and when I opened the cover further, who was there but Joseph-Gordon Levitt?
OUCH!
Took me three days of staring at it on my coffee table before I actually let myself open it and read the stories.
Too many memories....
But I can't wait to see her hosting a week from now:)

Anne Hathaway Engaged
to Adam Shulman!

Anne hath a ring on it!
After three years together, Anne Hathaway is engaged to actor Adam Shulman, her rep confirms to Us Weekly.
The Oscar-nominated actress, 29, has been spotted out and about recently wearing an engagement ring -- designed, her rep tells Us, by Kwiat Heritage.
Low-key Shulman was initially Hathaway's rebound romance after the messy end of her four-year romance with Raffaello Follieri in mid-2008. (Follieri pled guilty in October 2008 to defrauding investors of millions of dollars in a shocking scheme in which he posed as a real estate consultant for the Vatican.)
"We hit it off immediately, but it took us a pretty long time to get together," Hathaway has said. After they realized they were both single, the actress reveals that "things sped up a bit -- and I think I'll leave it at that."
"So far, it's worked out great," the Dark Knight Rises actress told Harper's Bazaar of her guy, adding that Shulman was far more "mellow" than her previous romances. See pics of Anne's engagement ring!
"Mellow doesn't always make for a good story, but it makes for a good life."

Anne Hathaway is engaged! She debuted the new rock from fiancé Adam Shulman yesterday while at a NYC park with their dog Esmeralda. Her rep Stephen Huvane confirmed the happy news with us. Stephen said, "The ring is a design collaboration between her fiancé Adam Shulman and Kwiat Heritage Jewels."
She and Adam got together back in 2008. They started dating just months after Anne split from her former boyfriend, convicted real-estate investor Raffaello Follieri. Adam and Anne have been going strong ever since, and he's accompanied her around the world on movie sets and exotic vacations. Most recently, the couple have been sticking close to their Brooklyn home while Anne works on The Dark Knight Rises around the Big Apple. Hopefully both Adam and Anne were able to celebrate the happy news with family over Thanksgiving — congrats to the happy couple!

Anne Hathaway is already brainstorming ideas for her wedding to her fiancé Adam Shulman. The couple got engaged over the weekend, and Hathaway and Shulman were overheard at La Esquina (http://esquinanyc.com/) Monday night excitedly discussing ideas about their nuptuals with a friend. A spy overheard the couple talk about having a nontraditional ceremony with co-ed bridesmaids and groomsmen. They also talked about having a wine tasting for the event, a witness tells us. The smitten couple were very touchy-feely during dinner, and were spotted kissing several times before splitting the bill and leaving the restaurant.

Somehow, I doubt they were talking about their nuptuals. :P

In today's Belfast Telegraph:
Anne Hathaway throws engagement party
Tuesday, 7 February 2012
Anne Hathaway celebrated her recent engagement by throwing a party at the weekend.
The Devil Wears Prada star and fiancé Adam Shulman partied the night away with 125 guests, People magazine reports.
But the bash, which was held at Housing Works Bookstore Café in New York, was surprisingly celebrity-free and only close family and friends were invited.
Anne was seen taking her chocolate Labrador, Esmeralda, for a walk in the Big Apple the following day and did not appear too much the worse for wear.
The 29-year-old has not revealed when her wedding day will be but has gushed about her beau who popped the question last November.
"We hit it off immediately," she's revealed adding that she was "very much in love with him".
Anne stars in upcoming movie The Dark Knight Rises where she plays Catwoman.

From Belfast Telegraph today:
Hathaway: I lived in gym for Batman
Thursday, 12 April 2012
Anne Hathaway had to perform all her own stunts in The Dark Knight Rises
Anne Hathaway has revealed she devoted herself to training to "physically transform" into Catwoman for The Dark Knight Rises.
The 29-year-old, who wore a skin-tight leather cat suit to play Batman femme fatale Selena Kyle, told Entertainment Weekly that director Christopher Nolan asked her to be fit enough to perform all her own stunts.
Anne revealed: "I had to physically transform. Chris sat me down at the beginning and said, 'Joseph Gordon-Levitt did all of his own fighting in Inception. That one zero-gravity fight? He trained for two months.'"
She joked: "I basically left his office and went to the gym and just came out about five minutes ago."
The One Day actress is now reported to be on a strict diet to play dying factory worker Fantine in Tom Hooper's film adaptation of Les Miserables.
Meanwhile, her Dark Knight Rises co-star Tom Hardy defended his character's muffled voice, which some fans criticised after seeing the trailer. The British actor plays villain Bane, who wears a mask.
He said: "It's a risk, because we could be laughed at - or it could be very fresh and exciting.
"The audience mustn't be too concerned about the mumbly voice. As the film progresses, I think you'll be able to tune to its setting."

I think she looks astounding...
-
She would be beautiful if she shaved her head. And wore all white makeup...She is simply stunning... But saying that;
I figure its probably for her role in Les Miserables... She has to look, ill, emaciated, and very unhealthy... The role she is playing as I am sure most of you know, is of a girl that is dying.
I think she should be a perfect choice to play that role. Her singing voice is above almost any other female, working in the movie industry today. Except for maybe Emily Rossem IMO...
It is rather odd when you think of it how When the BBM came out the men were the most well known. Now the two women have probably the most prominent careers. Ann is working non stop. She just completed the new Batman Rises, where she is playing Catwoman. Michelle has been nominated for an Academy Award. So it looks like they will just get more and more popular. Basically being boosted in their career by a little movie, we all know and love..
-
Michelle has been nominated for an Academy Award.
Small correction, Janice: To date, Michelle has been nominated for three Academy Awards (Brokeback, Blue Valentine, and My Week with Marilyn), and Anne for one Oscar (Rachel Getting Married). Those girls rock, and I'm sure they're only going to get better and better.
-
Well I bow to your diligence. I did not recall all of those off the top of my head. I knew of them , and did not present them.. They are remarkable actresses. Ang Lee sure knows how to pick em.. so to speak.. :)
-
Janice, you were right about "Les Miserables". From Belfast Telegraph today:

Anne Hathaway's crop explained
Monday Apr 16 2012
Anne Hathaway's newly-cropped look requires a "lot of TLC", says celebrity hairstylist Sinead Kelly.
The gorgeous actress recently stepped out showing off her dramatically sheared locks, which is a striking change from the typically long and glamorous tresses she is known for.
Anne has changed up her tresses for her role in a big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables, and hair pro Sinead - who has worked with the likes of Pussycat Dolls star Kimberly Wyatt - has shared her tips on recreating the fashion forward look.
"This look requires a lot of TLC. Regular trims are a must and sometimes people find they have to spend more time styling it than longer locks," she told Cover Media. "However, if you do have the time and energy to devote to this high fashion look then invest in a quality hairdresser to look after you - it will definitely be worth it!"
Sinead - owner of top London salon Sinead Kelly London - also advised on what to consider before taking the plunge with the daring crop. The hairstylist says girls with super curly locks should seriously reconsider the look, as styling becomes tricky with the texture.
"Face shape is very important consideration with this style as it determines the angle of the cut entirely. Most face shapes can pull off this edgy trend, bit I suggest that round face shapes opt for a slightly longer cut which is more flattering," she advised.
"We wouldn't recommend clients with seriously curly locks to try this cut as it would be difficult to maintain any definition. Wavy is better, but straight hair is best for this look.
"Everyone has a different set hairline, those that are lower down the nape of your neck will prove to be more difficult to maintain as the hair will be more visible and wispy as it grows back."
Sinead also suggests keeping colour in mind when going for the chop.
"This is something that many people do not think about before requesting a crop. If for example the client has a full head of highlights, they will be impossible to recreate as the hair will be too short to hold the foils. Uber short crops require an all over colour," she explained.

Hathaway's 'crazy' Les Mis diet
Wednesday, 20 June 2012
Anne Hathaway admitted that dieting for movie roles took its toll
Anne Hathaway had to live off hummus and radishes to drop the weight for Les Miserables.
The actress, who plays French, poverty-stricken prostitute Fantine in the musical story, spoke to Allure magazine about putting her body through the mill to prepare for roles over the years.
Of wearing a catsuit for Catwoman, Anne said: "(It was) a psychological terrorist.
"The suit, thoughts of my suit, changing my life so I would fit into that suit... It dominated my year.
"I didn't understand how you could be thin and strong. I went into the 10 for ten months and didn't come out."
On Les Mis, she was quoted as saying: "I'm doing some crazy weight stuff right now. I'm on day six of detox...This diet makes me break out, so I love that.
"Nothing like living on hummus and radishes and then be all, 'And I got a pimple. Yeah!'"
The Devil Wears Prada star told Allure she was told to get Botox when she was just 23, but she ignored the advice.

Anne Hathaway's ex 'was very much in love'
Friday, 22 June 2012
Anne Hathaway's ex Raffaello Follieri has revealed that the former couple "were talking about marriage."
The Italian businessman was recently released from a US federal prison after serving a three and a half year sentence for wire fraud, conspiracy and money laundering.
When Raffaello was arrested in 2008 for the crimes, his four-year relationship with Anne ended immediately.
Raffaello regrets losing his love.
"We were talking about marriage," he told People magazine. "I was very much in love with her."
Raffaello feels remorseful about his poor decisions, but he is committed to moving on with his life.
"I thought my life was over [when I was first incarcerated]," he shared. "But I learned to survive by focusing on getting through one day at a time. I'm not a saint. But I'm not the devil."
After splitting from Raffaelo, Anne began dating actor Adam Shulman. The actress and Adam announced their engagement to wed in November 2011.

Anne Hathaway’s Stellar Turn
as Catwoman
in ‘The Dark Knight Rises’

Anne Hathaway in "Rachel Getting Married," left, and Dark Knight Rises, right.
(From left: Everett Collection; Warner Bros.)
Unfairly maligned for recent roles in ‘Bride Wars’ and ‘One Day’—and that Oscars-show disaster—Anne Hathaway turns in a performance as Catwoman that’s the best thing about ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Marlow Stern talks to critics about how Hathaway is the real deal.
“Oscars Bomb: James Franco Looks High, Anne Hathaway Overcompensates”
That was the headline plastered atop many media reports following the 83rd Academy Awards on Feb. 27, 2011. The ceremony, viewed by nearly 38 million people worldwide, was an unequivocal disaster, with co-host Anne Hathaway doing her best to buoy her disinterested accomplice.
“I was there in the audience,” Claudia Puig, chief film critic for USA Today, tells The Daily Beast. “She was really going for it and had to work five times as hard to make up for James Franco, and she did. During the breaks, she’d be chatting with the audience, asking us how we were doing.”
The iconic HOLLYWOOD sign casting its baneful shadow over the City of Angels might as well read, “What have you done for me lately?” In the case of Hathaway, 29, it’s been a mixed bag.
In addition to the Oscar-hosting debacle, Hathaway starred in last year’s One Day. Directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education ), the decades-spanning romantic drama looked like sure-fire awards bait, but the movie—along with Hathaway’s mangled British accent—was savaged by critics.
Prior to that, Hathaway starred as a woman afflicted with early-onset Parkinson’s disease in Love and Other Drugs. Despite earning her a Golden Globe nomination—a rather dubious accolade these days—the film grossed just north of $32 million in North America. And before that, with the exception of a supporting turn in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, she popped up in the atrocious ensemble rom-com Valentine’s Day (presumably as a favor to her The Princess Diaries director, Garry Marshall), as well as the comedy Bride Wars, which was later named one of the Top 10 Worst Chick Flicks by Time magazine.
But all doubts about Hathaway’s acting ability should be erased in 2012.
The Dark Knight Rises, the final chapter in Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster Batman trilogy, is poised to be one of the highest-grossing movies in film history. It boasts a non-stop barrage of special effects as well as an all-star ensemble, including: Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Marion Cotillard. Given the 14 Oscar nominations—and five wins—among her co-stars, Anne Hathaway’s turn as Selina Kyle (a.k.a. Catwoman) was thought to be one of the film’s biggest liabilities by eager fanboys and fangirls prior to the film’s release. After all, how could the usually demure Hathaway match the feline sexiness of Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns ?
And yet, it’s Hathaway who steals the show.
Her performance as Catwoman sees her acting versatility on full display. She not only looks great in her leather Catwoman suit and pulls off all the action stunts convincingly—flipping over tables and roundhouse-kicking thugs one moment and deftly operating the Batcycle the next—but also, with the slightest shift in her body language and wide, soulful eyes, fully transforms herself from a fragile maid into a wily diamond thief.
Hathaway even channels Audrey Hepburn in one memorable scene, runway-strutting through an airport terminal in elegant designer duds.
“She’s brought a whole new dimension and intelligence to the character,” says Puig. “There’s a wonderful chemistry that flares up between her and Christian Bale and she’s more assertive and feisty than previous catwomen. She’s the kind of heroine women can get behind and admire, and men can lust after.”
At the age of 19, Brooklyn-born Hathaway burst onto the scene in 2001’s The Princess Diaries, which told the tale of Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), an ugly duckling who, over the course of the film, morphs into a gorgeous princess. While the film went on to gross more than $165 million worldwide, Hathaway was still growing into her own as a woman and an actress.
“The first time I became aware of her—in The Princess Diaries, I guess—I thought something like, ‘No, this doesn’t work. Her features are too big for her face. She almost has clown features. That smile is enormous. She’s awkward,” New Yorker critic David Denby tells The Daily Beast. “I didn’t really see her until The Devil Wears Prada, when the awkwardness—the way emotions would rush out after hesitation—was something, I realized, she was using as an actress.”
Following an impressive turn as an unfulfilled housewife in 2005’s Brokeback Mountain and a laughably bad one as a Valley Girl teen-cum-crack-smoking wannabe thug in the direct-to-video flick Havoc that same year, Hathaway emerged as a full-fledged leading woman in The Devil Wears Prada, holding her own against the inimitable Meryl Streep. Sporting a plethora of designer outfits—courtesy of Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field—Hathaway became a fashion symbol of sorts.
“She can wear clothes well—she’s got the body for fashion—but there’s still something lovably uncomfortable about her, as if she were abashed, a little hesitant even, about being a beautiful movie star,” says Denby. “She has an absolute refusal of complacency; she isn’t the least narcissistic.”
Indeed, because of Hathaway’s go-for-broke attitude, her failures are just as big as her successes.
After dropping out of Judd Apatow’s Knocked Up, because she objected to the scene showing her character giving birth, Hathaway landed the role of Kym Buchman, the black sheep of a dysfunctional family in the 2008 indie Rachel Getting Married. Directed by Jonathan Demme (The Silence of the Lambs ), the film was a critical hit thanks to Hathaway’s fearless, unglamorous performance. As Kym, she exhibits the entire spectrum of human emotion—horrifying one moment and quietly devastating the next. The performance earned Hathaway a 2009 Best Actress Oscar nomination—her first. That same year, she played a psychotherapist tasked with treating a group of plane-crash survivors in the indie drama, Passengers. Directed by Rodrigo García (Albert Nobbs ), the critically-panned movie was quietly released in theaters, grossing under $300,000 at the North American box office.
“She’s made a lot of interesting choices in terms of versatility and diversity,” says Puig. “She’s not even 30 years old and you can’t really say this about anyone else in her age group—except for maybe Michelle Williams, although she hasn’t done as much—that she can go from a low-key, sensitive role to a feisty action performance to a comic role.”
One of the biggest criticisms of Hathaway leveled by her detractors is her perceived aloofness—perhaps due to her glamorous fashion sense, lack of ‘regular gal’ characters onscreen, or that jet-setting relationship with her church-swindling ex-boyfriend, Raffaello Follieri (which she terminated in 2008, citing the potential damage it could cause her career).
“Not so,” says Puig. “I was talking with my daughter about how a friend had interviewed her and said she was really nice, and my daughter said, ‘Oh, I could totally see her being nice.’ Sure, she’s beautiful and glamorous, but she doesn’t have the detached beauty and glamor of other actresses from her generation. She and Mila Kunis pull off comedy and, even though they’re both really beautiful, they seem relatable.”
These days, Hathaway’s love life is a lot less turbulent: she’s engaged to actor Adam Shulman, whom she’s been dating since Nov. 2008. Unlike the flashy ex-con Follieri, the decidedly low-key duo has been known to split $25 checks at bistros, like any regular couple, and even participate in Occupy Wall Street demonstrations.
And after The Dark Knight Rises, Hathaway will star as Fantine, a tragic prostitute, in director Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech ) adaptation of the hit Broadway musical Les Miserables, opening this Christmas. The film’s trailer, which almost exclusively features Hathaway showing off her great singing voice, is already garnering Oscar buzz for the actress.
“She hasn’t gotten jaded and never kicks back and rests on her laurels,” says Puig. “She’s somebody who takes it all on. She’s just one of those rare actresses, and I can see her having a career until she’s 93.”

That's a lovely, well-written article about our girl. Thanks for passing it on, John. I can't wait to see her on the big screen Monday night.
-
I guess I am out of step... I liked Anne Hathaway and James Franco hosting the Oscars.
(I also like the year that David Letterman hosted.)
I also would prefer Billy Crystal didn't host the next Oscars.
I guess I just prefer the Golden Globes -- I like seeing the acceptees liquored up before their speeches!
-
I think Anne is a great person and a truly talented actress. Did you see "Rachel Gets Married"? That is one effin' great performance. 8)
-
I feel her performances are always first-rate, even when the material or other actors around her aren't quite hitting the mark. "Rachel Gets Married" is my favorite too, Meryl. What a heart-wrenching performance. She convinced me I was actually INSIDE her character's skin. It was phenomenal.
-
Anne is absolutely wonderful in the The Dark Knight Rises. She was the perfect choice. Nolan is great at casting.

Hathaway traumatised by haircut
Monday, 30 July 2012
Anne Hathaway has revealed that she was "terrified" to cut her hair off for Les Miserables.
The Dark Knight Rises star, who portrays Catwoman in Christopher Nolan's third and final instalment of the Batman trilogy, had to go for the chop for her role as Fantine in Tom Hooper's forthcoming big-screen adaptation.
"It was terrifying. I didn't expect it because in this film [The Dark Knight Rises], I do backflips out of windows, I jump off of buildings, I do all sorts of scary things but nothing was as scary as cutting my hair off," she said.
Anne, 29, admitted that her emotions took her by surprise.
"I was really surprised by that. I don't know why - it was a big dramatic change that could have gone very, very badly," she explained.
"I didn't realise how much my identity was tied to hair. But it was good to take that up."
Anne stars alongside Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean and Russell Crowe as Inspector Javert in Les Miserables, which is scheduled for release in December.

Anne Hathaway Is Game For A Catwoman Spinoff
(http://i1123.photobucket.com/albums/l543/jakeheathfan/AnneHathawayCatwoman1.jpg) |
The Dark Knight Rises is a summer blockbuster, and the movie centers around the characters of superhero Batman, and super-villian Bane.
However, many reviewers have been saying that actress Anne Hathaway steals every scene she is in as Catwoman. Due to the amount of attention the character (and Anne's portrayal of her) has received, talk is beginning to circulate that a Catwoman movie is would be a hit, and Anne Hathaway would have to reprise her role from Dark Knight.
In 2004 a film titled Catwoman was released, with Halle Berry in the lead role, and it was panned by both critics and fans, and the film flopped at the box office.
When questioned on this development, Anne Hathaway replied:
I think it would be lovely to see more of her but only if its with the right people. She lives in [Nolans Gotham City] and so it would have to be established by the people who have made this Gotham City. For me, at least.

She is definitely a kickass Catwoman. I think she is the best one yet. I know she lost in a poll to Michelle Phiffer but,
I think Anne's was better..MO>

Call her Anne enchanted. Or, as Anne Hathaway may now prefer to be known, Mrs. Shulman.
The actress, 29, tied the knot with Adam Shulman, 31, on Saturday night in Big Sur on the California coast, according to People magazine.
More than 100 guests attended the couple’s wedding weekend, including a rehearsal dinner Friday at the Ventana Inn and Spa, the magazine reported Saturday online. The ceremony took place on a private estate.
The gown was custom Valentino, People says the designer confirmed.
The bride and groom opted for a nature motif, with Big Sur as a breathtaking backdrop, a source told the magazine.
Hathaway, star of “Ella Enchanted,” “The Princess Diaries” and “Les Miserables” and her actor/jewelry designer beau became engaged last November after dating for four years.

"I am very much in love with him, (only) Adam totally ruined my plan," Hathaway said last year of their relationship. "I was really actually looking forward to a little alone time, and then I fell in love like a fool!"
Hathaway told USA Today that she and Shulman maintain a low-key lifestyle.
"We have house parties and dinner parties and just hang out," Hathaway said to the paper last year. "I'm so delighted by (Adam). He's all the things you want a partner to be. I so find joy in his presence."

GORGEOUS gown. She looks like the princess that she is.
Hard to believe she's only 29. We've been watching her for sooo long.
Thanks for sharing, John. I hadn't read this in the headlines so far this morning.

All of always knew that Anne was a class act:
Newlywed Anne Hathaway will donate money from wedding photos to marriage campaign
By Adam Polaski
In September, actress Anne Hathaway celebrated her wedding day with longtime partner Adam Shulman. The 29-year-old actress, who starred in this summer's blockbuster The Dark Knight Rises and who is featured in this winter's big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables, enjoyed a private wedding with family members and friends in Big Sur, California.
Now, Hathaway is doing her part to ensure that same-sex couples across the country can enjoy a fairytale wedding like hers; this week, she announced that she'll be donating some of the sales from her wedding photographs to non-profits advocating for marriage for same-sex couples, including Freedom to Marry. Reports also indicate that she'll be splitting the profits between groups like the American Cancer Society, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and The Girl Effect.
The donation from the sales of her wedding photos is the latest way that Hathaway has taken a stand for the freedom to marry. In 2008, she talked publicly for the first time about her brother, who is gay, and explained that their relationship has compelled her to advocate as an ally to the LGBT community. In 2008 she was awarded the Human Rights Campaign's Ally Award and gave a rousing speech about the importance of acceptance of LGBT people. She said, "I don't consider myself just an ally to the LGBT community, I consider myself your family. And so, I'm doing what we should all do with our families - I'm loving you, I support you, I completely accept you as you are, as I hope you do me, and if anyone ever tries to hurt you, I'm going to give them hell."
Most recently, Hathaway and Shulman have been serving as members of our National Honorary Host Committee for our National Engagement Party, which wrapped on Saturday, October 13 and raised a total of $500,000 for Freedom to Marry's Win More States Fund, 100% of which is strategically channeled into the four states - Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, and Washington - where marriage is on the ballot on Election Day.
We thank Hathaway and Shulman for their support and appreciate their decision to take the opportunity of their nuptials to speak out about why marriage matters.

from Belfast Telegraph today:
Anne Hathaway will be 'fierce' mom
Monday, 12 November 2012
Anne Hathaway predicts she will love her children "quite fiercely".
The American actress got married to Adam Shulman earlier this year and although they aren't planning a family just yet Anne is looking forward to becoming a mother.
She is currently promoting her movie Les Misérables, in which she portrays Fantine. The character is special to Anne as her mother portrayed her 20 years ago, before she stopped acting to concentrate on her family.
"It made me think about how fiercely she loved us. And now, of course, with me having this beyond-my-wildest-dreams success in my own career... knowing what that must have been like for her to put that aside for the good of her children," she explained to the latest edition of US Vogue.
"Oh, my God. I want to be a mother, and I anticipate loving my children quite fiercely. I think about it all the time, though it's a silly thing to think about because the kind of mother I'll be depends on the kind of children I have. I can't wait to meet them."
Anne has undergone a transformation to play Fantine. As well as cutting off her long hair she has dropped around 25lbs. to ensure she is believable as a character who is fighting a lengthy illness.
She underwent a strict cleanse to help her lose weight at first, then stuck to a brutal diet to slim down even more. At one point she was eating just "two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste" each day, the publication reports.
"I had to be obsessive about it - the idea was to look near death," she explained. "Looking back on the whole experience - and I don't judge it in any way - it was definitely a little nuts. It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that's who Fantine is anyway."
Adam helped Anne through the whole experience, which she found draining. She isn't sure she would have coped so well had it not been for his unwavering support.
"I was in such a state of deprivation - physical and emotional. When I got home, I couldn't react to the chaos of the world without being overwhelmed," she said.
"It took me weeks till I felt like myself again. Adam was there. He gets what I do and who I am and supports me in it, and that's pretty awesome."

Jackman: Hathaway is Oscars gold in 'Les Miserables'
Nov. 22, 2012, 12:00 PM EST
WENN
Actor Hugh Jackman has tapped his "Les Miserables" co-star Anne Hathaway for Oscars gold, insisting he was blown away the moment she started singing in rehearsals.
Hathaway portrays tragic prostitute Fantine in the upcoming film adaptation of the hit musical and Jackman is convinced she has a real shot at taking home a Best Actress Academy Award at next year's ceremony.
He tells Vogue magazine, "After Annie's first day of rehearsal, I said to Tom, 'You can just turn the camera on, digitally remove the script from her hands, and she's going to win the Academy Award.'"
And Jackman wasn't the only one left awestruck by Hathaway's vocal abilities. Amanda Seyfried, who plays Fantine's daughter Cosette in the movie musical, says, "As soon as I heard her sing, I was like, 'Oh s**t. I've got to up my game big time.'"
-
I got to see the first screening of "Les Miz" yesterday, thanks to a friend in the Screen Actors Guild. Afterwards there was a Q & A with Anne, the director Tom Hooper ("The King's Speech"), Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne and Samantha Barks. Tom Hooper said he just finished the film the day before. :P
Anne looks amazing. She was wearing tight black pants, a white T-shirt with what looked like a face on it similar to the Joker face, black cardigan and sky high red heels. Her hair is still super short, which makes her eyes look even more enormous, if that's possible.
The movie is intense and looks fabulous, with lots of overhead shots of Paris, especially the gangbusters opening (CGI, I assume) and great costumes. The director decided to make it through-sung, so no dialogue. Hugh Jackman is terrific and really needs to be nominated, as does Anne for her short but important role. Colm Wilkinson, the original Jean Valjean, is cast as the priest, a nice touch. Russell Crowe does well as the villain Javert, but his singing is only adequate.
My main criticism is that after awhile (and the movie is 2:30) the intensity is too unvaried, and the director's habit of tight closeups on faces during solo songs gets wearing--plus everybody cries buckets. If you go, sit further back to avoid feeling claustrophobic. The comic relief of Sacha Baron Cohen and Helena Bonham Carter's trashy innkeepers was very much needed.
The singing in the movie was done live, which makes it more immediate. The cast said they wore earpieces to hear piano accompaniment while they were being filmed and the orchestra was added later.
Apologies for bad iPhone quality pics:

About the movie - two and a half hours without any speaking? :o
I doubt I will ever watch it. My favorite adaption of Les Mis is the Bille August movie from 98 - starring Geoffrey Rush as Javert.

From Belfast Telegraph yesterday:
Les Mis role is Anne's 'dream job'
Wednesday, 5 December 2012
Anne Hathaway has said being cast as tragic heroine Fantine in the film adaptation of Les Miserables was her "dream" job as she attended the movie's world premiere.
Despite losing almost two stone [that's 24 lbs to us Americans] and having her long hair cropped to play the factory worker-turned-prostitute, the American actress admitted she would have done anything for the part.
Oozing Hollywood style as she took to the red carpet in London's Leicester Square wearing a bejewelled Givenchy gown, the 30-year-old said: "It's just the sort of job you feel you should give your pay cheque back at the end of the week, it was such a dream and I can't believe I'm the girl that got to play Fantine."
Asked if she would have gone beyond the drastic lengths of cutting her brunette locks and slimming down to play her emaciated character, Anne added: "I didn't have to pull out my teeth, but no one asked, so yes, I would do anything."
The star was joined by director Tom Hooper and co-stars Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and Eddie Redmayne on the red carpet.
Burberry model Eddie, who attended the premiere in a teal velvet Burberry suit, said working with a cast of Hollywood heavyweights was "wildly exhilarating".
Australian Hugh, 44, described London as the perfect place for the film's premiere, calling it "the spiritual home of the musical".
He said: "It's the most French story ever written, and I guess this is where it really took life. It's very exciting and the crowds have been great and it never grows old this stuff."
Acknowledging the difference between his past experience in musical theatre and the film making process, Hugh said: "Obviously with the camera it's a different audience; the camera's very close and it's a lot more intimate.
"I think the discipline of having done eight shows a week many times for a long period of time really stood me in good stead. It was a very demanding shoot."

Anne Hathaway's hair cut doubts
Thursday, 6 December 2012
Anne Hathaway was prepared to chop off her hair for Les Miserables
Anne Hathaway has admitted she had some reservations about chopping off her hair for her Les Miserables role - because she wanted to be a long-haired bride.
The actress plays Fantine in Tom Hooper's musical drama and although she initially plumped for the hair cut she revealed that her then boyfriend Adam Shulman hinted that it might mean she would be sporting short locks on her wedding day.
Anne said: "When I got the role, Tom and I had lunch and I said, 'Look I just want to float this out there, I'm up for cutting my hair off if you'd like to' but with films it can be very difficult to shoot things in chronological order. I didn't want to insist if it was going to be too much of a pain but I really felt very strongly that as much of the physical transformations that could be real ought to be real, and so I was really happy about it when Tom accepted.
"Then, at the time I hadn't yet got engaged and my now husband looked at me with a mixture of pride, joy, worry, and slight panic too. And he said, 'Without giving anything away about what's coming in the next few months, how do you feel about being a short haired bride?' And I just went, 'Noooo!'."
But the star decided lopping off her locks was necessary for the part.
Anne, who wed Adam in September, said: "And then I just thought, it'll be truthful, I'll be who I am when I get married and who I am is an actor and what I do is transform when the occasion arises so I tried to minimise that drama in my own head."
Les Miserables opens in the UK in January.

Congrats. to two members of the Brokeback team for their Oscar wins last night - Anne for best supporting actress and Ang for best director. Anne's award was no surprise but I think Ang's was. The "experts" I read had the award going to Stephen Spielberg for Lincoln.
And congrats., too, to Daniel Day Lewis for not only winning his third Oscar but for giving the classiest acceptance speech of the evening.

Wouldn't we all kill to see DDL's Margaret Thatcher? ;D

Anne's always been pretty much a part of the 'in' Hollywood crowd, and even though the cast of Bbm was suppose to have become Hollywood 'royalty' post-Bbm, Anne actually did show some class. She just happened to have been saddled with a dork cohost two years ago.
In spite of his third nomination (and second win), Ang Lee's always been something of a Hollywood outsider - but talented! And even in Hollywood (sometimes) talent rules.
On Sunday night, in my mind I couldn't help thinking Monika's comment of 30 hours ago.
Woho! The Brokeback cast rules!
-
Needed a second post (I know it's in the wrong thread) to explain my comment about Ang being a Hollywood outsider ...
He's won the best director's oscar TWICE without his coattails also being long enough to have his movie also win the best picture oscar.
To win a directing oscar seperately from a best picture is rare enough. To do it twice? ... Nobody has ever been saddle with that stat.
-
Anne ... just happened to have been saddled with a dork cohost two years ago.
I'm glad to know I'm not the only one around here who doesn't think James Franco is the greatest thing since sliced bread. 8)

Anne Hathaway: The Most Horrible Person Who's Ever Lived
Posted: 02/27/2013 8:44 am
I totally adore Anne Hathaway, but I can't stand you. I mean, I've never met you, and I don't know anything about you, but you strike me as cheerful and peppy and good and I just hate that: You're such a phony.
Oh, you have talent? I bet you think you're just the bee's ass.
Okay, I didn't really know that I was supposed to hate Anne Hathaway until I woke up to a thousand or so articles telling me just that. Right. I figure all these people must know something that I don't: that she's a raging harridan backstage, or a preening snob, or something grisly that she skillfully suppresses in public.
But no, it seems that she's actually winning and eager and peppy in real life. So what we're expected to hate is this -- that the woman's charming.
Full disclosure: I didn't like her much in Les Mis. There she was trying too hard. The merciless close-ups didn't help: you don't want melodramatic facial contortions twenty feet tall. But that wasn't her issue alone: the entire film featured way too many close-ups of veins throbbing in foreheads like epileptic pythons. It should have been called Les Aneurysms. But that has no bearing on Hathaway the woman.
I'm genuinely trying to figure this out. We're supposed to hate Anne Hathaway, but love Jennifer Lawrence. I guess peppy is out, and awk is in. I happen to think they're both pretty great -- and this doesn't strike me as any kind of deep personal paradox -- but I don't have my finger on the nation's pulsing forehead.
Perhaps it's an absence of proletarian cool. America's going through a phase that defined Britain in the sixties: a working class hero is something to be. Fine. I have no problem with that -- it's a nice antidote to sphincter-clenched elitism. I've always been a cheerleader for hillbilly culture: I'd much rather hear a voice from Appalachia than Harvard.
The truth, however, is that Jennifer Lawrence isn't an echt hillbilly. She's not a coal miner's daughter. She's not Katniss. She wasn't raised gnawing on winter's bone.
Her father was in construction? In Louisville Kentucky? Cool. But he owned a construction business, which is not quite the same thing as standing knee-deep in Southern cement. Sure, Anne Hathaway's the daughter of a lawyer and an actress, which is a bit more glamorous. She's all Montessori and Vassar and NYU. But does this make her unlovable?
I've encountered one damning anecdote. One. It seems that Joseph Gordon-Levitt called her "an insufferable snob". I stress the word "seems". I googled the origins of this widely-quoted single slur, and came up with celebdirtylaundry.com, perezhilton.com, gossiprocks.com -- all impeccable sources really -- until finally celebitchy.com referred me to the sterling print publication that first offered this observation to the world: Star magazine.
A close reading of the passage in Star cannot help but reveal the dependable words: "sources say." Not just one anonymous source, note, but plural: anonymous sources. They're the ones that say. And they say that Joseph said. And celebitchy.com says this, based on what Star says that "sources say" that Joseph said: Anne's a snotty diva.
Color me unconvinced. Given the evidence, sorry: she's probably not a raging bitch on skis. Let's fish elsewhere, then, shall we? Goody two-shoes, right? (Both Prada.) Here we're standing on firm ground: the girl wanted to be a nun. Except that she gave up on that ambition when she found out that her brother was gay. Which is the kind of genuine moral decision that I find admirable -- dunno about you. It doesn't represent ditzy acquiescence to the status quo: it is, in its quiet personal way, a revolutionary act.
Maybe I just don't get it.
Perhaps it really is just a matter of cool. Anne Hathaway isn't. She's about as world-weary as a Labrador retriever. Approximately as cynical as Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
And that's perhaps it. Anne Hathaway is the young Judy Garland. Or rather: she's what Judy Garland presented to the public: "Let's put on a show!" The problem with Hathaway is that she's that same persona backstage: she's not a pill-popping train-wreck. If you're going to be cheerful, these days, you better be sitting on tragic. Unfortunately, the closest to tragic that Hathaway gets is to find herself accidentally falling in love with a grifter. And that's genuinely sad, except that she bounced back with determined peppiness.
When she found herself hosting the Oscars with a snoring James Franco, she battled the situation (unsuccessfully) with determined peppiness. She brought a bit too much determined peppiness to the role of Catwoman, but are we required to hate an actress for being miscast?
Eh. I suppose this is just the Age of Unpolished. Don't get me wrong -- I really do admire Jennifer Lawrence -- but not everybody has to faceplant on the way to the microphone.
The latest Hatha-slur? The woman had the temerity to rehearse her acceptance speech at the Oscars. Damn. That's criminal.
Give me a break. Every boy and girl in America has been rehearsing their acceptance speech since the age of nine. That's what they do in front of the mirror before brushing their teeth. (Not me. But I know what I'm going to say when I win the Pritzker and the Nobel.)
Okay, I give in. I'm going to start hating Anne. It's clearly what all the cool kids are doing. But guide me here: who am I supposed to worship? The anti-Anne, I guess. Sure, I can do that. Let's see now...
You know who's the apotheosis of happening, classy American womanhood? Jodi Arias.

He's won the best director's oscar TWICE without his coattails also being long enough to have his movie also win the best picture oscar.
To win a directing oscar seperately from a best picture is rare enough. To do it twice? ... Nobody has ever been saddle with that stat.
I think it says that Ang selects challenging material that is outside of Hollywood's envelope. And that's a good thing.

From Huffington Post this morning:
I didn't like her much in Les Mis.
I like the article, and this line slayed me.
Also liked the throbbing veins/epileptical pythons. ;D
Can't confim the judgement on Les Mis, since I haven't seen it. But from the trailers that's pretty much what I expect the movie to be. Too much melodrama to peak my interest.

Anne Hathaway found what might be the very best way to tell the paparazzi to "back off."

Anne is more well-liked than Jake, apparently!

Although I'll have to say, I'm somewhat suspicious of the poll. Even I like some of those people rated below Anne better than I like Anne. And I'm a Brokie!
The 48 Stars That People Like Less Than Anne Hathaway
By Nate Jones
Spend a few minutes reading blog comments, and you might assume that Anne Hathaway’s approval rating falls somewhere between that of Boko Haram and paper cuts — but you'd actually be completely wrong. According to E-Poll likability data we factored into Vulture's Most Valuable Stars list, the braying hordes of Hathaway haters are merely a very vocal minority. The numbers say that most people actually like her. Even more shocking? Who they like her more than.
In calculating their E-Score Celebrity rankings, E-Poll asked people how much they like a particular celebrity on a six-point scale, which ranged from "like a lot" to "dislike a lot." The resulting Likability percentage is the number of respondents who indicated they either "like" Anne Hathaway or "like Anne Hathaway a lot." Hathaway's 2014 Likability percentage was 67 percent — up from 66 percent in 2013 — which doesn't quite make her Will Smith (85 percent), Sandra Bullock (83 percent), Jennifer Lawrence (76 percent), or even Liam Neeson (79 percent), but it does put her well above plenty of stars whose appeal has never been so furiously impugned on Twitter.
Why? Well, why not? Anne Hathaway is a talented actress and seemingly a nice person. The objections to her boiled down to two main points: She tries too hard, and she's overexposed. But she's been absent from the screen since 2012's Les Misérables, so it's hard to call her overexposed now. And trying too hard isn't the worst thing in the world, especially when you consider the alternative. Finally, it's worth remembering that, even though everyone on your Twitter timeline was complaining about Hathaway last February, only 16 percent of U.S. adults use Twitter. There's a whole world out there, and it's full of people who have had fairly positive feelings towards Anne Hathaway this whole time.
We'll warn you, though: The numbers below may surprise you. Is Hathaway — delightful though she may be — really better liked than Channing Tatum, Tina Fey, Chris Pratt, and Ryan Gosling? Apparently so. One assumes that some of the male heartthrobs who scored below Hathaway — like Tatum, Gosling, and Zac Efron — lost points with male respondents. And tabloid overexposure probably hurt stars like Jennifer Aniston, Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and Kristen Stewart. Politics may have been a factor with respondents who disliked Fey and Will Ferrell. But whatever the reasons, Hathaway beat them all.
Here's the data.
With her score of 67 percent, Hathaway is slightly less likable than these four stars:
Matthew McConaughey (68 percent)
Jeff Bridges (68 percent)
Anna Kendrick (68 percent)
Henry Cavill (68 percent)
And she's exactly as likable as these seven gentlemen:
Mark Ruffalo (67 percent)
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (67 percent)
Adam Sandler (67 percent)
Kevin Hart (67 percent)
Leonardo DiCaprio (67 percent)
Michael Fassbender (67 percent)
Kevin James (67 percent)
And she's more likable than these 48 stars, including James Bond, Harry Potter, and the voice of Groot:
Kate Winslet (66 percent)
Zoe Saldana (66 percent)
Dwayne Johnson (66 percent)
Jennifer Aniston (66 percent)
Natalie Portman (66 percent)
Zach Galifianakis (66 percent)
Daniel Day-Lewis (65 percent)
Reese Witherspoon (65 percent)
Daniel Craig (65 percent)
George Clooney (65 percent)
Channing Tatum (64 percent)
Keira Knightley (64 percent)
Ben Stiller (64 percent)
Cate Blanchett (64 percent)
Robert Pattinson (64 percent)
Jonah Hill (63 percent)
Ben Affleck (62 percent)
Will Ferrell (62 percent)
Scarlett Johansson (61 percent)
Chloe Moretz (61 percent)
Chris Pratt (61 percent)
Javier Bardem (60 percent)
Vin Diesel (60 percent)
Chris Pine (60 percent)
Christian Bale (59 percent)
James Franco (59 percent)
Cameron Diaz (59 percent)
Jake Gyllenhaal (59 percent)
Jamie Foxx (59 percent)
Seth Rogen (59 percent)
Brad Pitt (58 percent)
Daniel Radcliffe (58 percent)
Ryan Gosling (58 percent)
James McAvoy (57 percent)
Shailene Woodley (57 percent)
Justin Timberlake (57 percent)
Naomi Watts (56 percent)
Andrew Garfield (54 percent)
Kristen Stewart (54 percent)
Russell Crowe (52 percent)
Angelina Jolie (50 percent)
Tyler Perry (50 percent)
Jessica Chastain (50 percent)
Penelope Cruz (49 percent)
Joaquin Phoenix (46 percent)
Zac Efron (41 percent)
Sean Penn (39 percent)
Tom Cruise (37 percent)

Yeah, Anne was in the crosshairs for a while, even had her own named group of haters, the "Hathahaters".
That actually doesn't surprise me. I of course love Anne as Lureen, like her in most roles, and think she seems like a nice and well-meaning person. But there is something about her -- something of the trying-too-hard/good girl/theater kid/always performing -- that I find slightly irksome.
I was just surprised that she's now seen as *more* likeable than people like George Clooney, Chris Pratt, Seth Rogen, Justin Timberlake, Cameron Diaz, etc. But then, that list seems seriously questionable -- how did Adam Sandler rank that high?
-
I know what you mean, I can't stand Adam Sandler!

Happy Birthday Anne!

Anybody see Anne in "Interstellar?" I really liked that movie. I saw it in the IMAX near Lincoln Center, which they say is the biggest screen in the U.S. The shots of the spaceships next to the Earth and Saturn were beautiful. The story is not the easiest to follow, but Christopher Nolan is never satisfied with a simple tale, bless him, and on top of being complex, it was very moving. Anne aced it, and so did Matthew McConnaughey. The little girl who played his daughter was super, and there's a scene at the end with Ellen Burstyn that's great.
Reading the end credits, I saw that there was an Alberta location unit. Made me feel all Brokieish again, knowing Anne was out there on the grieving plain.

Is it too soon to be on #EGOT watch?
Photo: Rob Kim/Getty Images
Television is all grown up! Like Matthew McConaughey and Scarlett Johansson before her, Anne Hathaway will star in a limited TV series titled The Ambassador's Wife, based on the novel of the same name published less than a month ago. The Mark Gordon Company, which currently produces such shows as Ray Donovan and Grey's Anatomy, will finance and produce the adaptation of Jennifer Steil's book, which tells the story of a woman named Miranda, the wife of a diplomat, who's kidnapped in a fictional Middle Eastern country called Mazrooq. There's no network attached yet, but you best believe broadcasters will be clamoring for a TV series starring an Oscar winner at the height of her powers. If you think this will move her one step closer to her eventual EGOT, you're wrong! She already has an Emmy for a Simpsons voice-over performance, but she can always starting thinking about a double EGOT.

"Largest" is a weird word for Vulture to use. "Anne Hathaway is a large movie star!"
Anyway, I'm not sure I'd necessarily call her that much larger than Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Collin Farrell, Toni Collette, Kevin Spacey, Laura Linney, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin, Jeff Daniels, Michael Sheen ... But they did say "arguably."
In any case, congratulations to Anne! However large she is compared to the others, she's great, and TV is where it's happening these days.
-
I had to look up what an EGOT is. It stands for Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony. The list of those who have won is impressive. Congrats, Anne!

The difficult decisions involved in being a celebrity...Our Anne was on the beach in her bikini enjoying the last few weeks of her first pregnancy. She notices that she is being photographed. So, she decides to be photographed in a flattering pose with nice filters on the camera, and releases the photo to the world. My question is, what is she doing on the beach in a bikini during the last weeks of pregnancy anyway? In early January in Southern California?? :-\

Ah, FRiend Lee, times have changed. In the summer I often see pregnant women in bathing suits, relaxing.
I'm sure there are plenty of various opinions on this. My own? I'm sure that pregancy is an extremely uncomfortable state to be in, and if going to the beach in a bikini helps a pregnant woman find some coomfort and relaxation, then good for her!

I agree. She shouldnt need to hide away - if shes got it.. flaunt it! :)

The operative words here are "In the summer..." I was simply asking what she was doing on a beach in a bikini IN JANUARY. But maybe, since she is Anne Hathaway, after all, she was in Fiji.
-
Well, I can't see her being in a bikini in the winter.

Anne Hathaway is the latest Hollywood figure to be appointed by the United Nations as a global goodwill ambassador to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women. The Oscar-winning actor joins Nicole Kidman, Emma Watson and Princess Bajrakitiyabha Mahidol of Thailand as fellow women’s goodwill ambassadors.
Hathaway has been brought on board to shed a spotlight on what UN Women’s executive director, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, described in a statement as the “motherhood penalty”.
“It is a particularly insidious demonstration of gender inequality in the workplace,” Mlambo-Ngucka said on Wednesday. “The appointment of Anne is timely because this year UN Women is driving hard to foster more positive mindsets and practical arrangements around workplaces that build and support equality for women.”
Hathaway, who said in a statement that she feels “honored and inspired by this opportunity to aid in advancing gender equality”, is no stranger to advocating on behalf of women’s rights: the actor previously served as an advocate for the Nike Foundation, formed to support programs to empower adolescent girls in the developing world, and in 2011 traveled to Kenya to raise awareness on sexual violence in the area.
“Girls who are raped are afraid to tell anyone for fear of shame, being blamed or being branded as ‘unmarriageable’ by their families and communities,” Hathaway wrote in a guest column, published in the Daily Beast, and co-authored by Maria Eitel. “As one – anonymous – woman in Dadaab put it: ‘If you tell, no one will help. It is better to be safe and tell no one.’”
Hathaway also lent her voice to the 2013 CNN documentary Girl Rising, about the power of female education.
“Significant progress has already been made, but it is time that we collectively intensify our efforts and ensure that true equality is finally realized,” Hathaway said about her appointment.
