I've read a few and these are my favorites so far
"Dreaming" by Cathalin
http://cathalin.livejournal.com/ (click on Brokeback fic or Jack/Ennis and look for "Dreaming" because she has several One-Shots too.)
"Ennis" by tforster42
http://rcwp.homestead.com/Ennis.html
and
"Roots" by 271horses
http://271horses.livejournal.com/ (scroll down to for "Roots".)
any recommendations that you think are as good as these? I'd like suggestions.
Thanks. Ian

Hey Retropian,
While we're at it, could you put links to those good stories that you like (in your last post)? And we'll try to do the same with the ones we recommend?

One of my all-time favorite Brokeback fanfic authors is RoyandRonnie. Her entire page with all her fanfics is here (http://royandronnie.livejournal.com/). It's a long page with a lot of fanfics. (There doesn't seem to be a table of contents or anything, so I'm going to do the work and break it all down for you now!! You're welcome!)
Where Bluebirds Sing (Set on Brokeback, summer '63) :)
Art is a Mirror (Set in 2007; Ennis sees Forever Blue. A touching one. Part 4 is the best.)
Trailhead (Erotic, Just 1 Chapter)
Never Enough Sleep (Erotic, 3 Chapters) :)
Three Little Words
Under the Tree (Christmas fanfic w/ Ennis "working through a blizzard")
Cycle of Broken Dreams Present-day setting, death/afterlife themes.
The Time Between Set immediately after Jack and Ennis leave Brokeback.
":)" Connotes my personal favorites.

Another really good one (long, 12 chapters) is If I Asked (http://midwest-girl.livejournal.com/294.html). :)
Jack decides he's going to press Ennis into agreeing to the "sweet life".

Done and done. I knew I should have included links when 1st posted and was about to do so anyway.
Thanks for your suggestions I'll check them out.

check out the sticky thread with the recs at the top of the first page-lots of good suggestions there.

I started reading "If I Asked". so far I'm liking it alot!

Cool.
Are "Ennis" and "Roots" in canon? Don't know the proper term... in other words, not AU with E + J as astronauts or something?

Yeah, I don't know all the terms either. AU I know is Alternative Universe, like as you say J&E as astronauts or something, and no these aren't AU.
"Ennis" picks up Ennis's story about 11 years after Jacks death and how he unexpectedly meets someone and falls in love. I like it very much because its believable and possible and because it's good to see Ennis find some happiness at last.
edit update; Well I guess anything that changes the outcome of the original story is AU, such as "Dreaming" and "If I Asked" where Jack and Ennis work things out and pursue the Sweet Life and Canon is whatever fits within the original story s parameters.
"Roots" is the story of Rich and Earl, who they are, how they meet in the late 1800's and commit to pursuing the "sweet life". Of course we know it ends badly for them, but what happens to Rich? I like how the story of Earl and Rich is contextualized in the culture of the American West and how Earls death is an event created by the times and the frustrations of others.

Well I finished "If I Asked" last night and really liked it. Very well done.

My all time favorite is "Somebody New" by Jenna. Unfortunately C&D orders have made it unavailable. This is closely followed by anything written by cynical21. SN is AU, the sweet life. CYN writes pure canon, hard to read (emotional factors) but so REAL and true to life.

Do you have links to these? Is cynical21 on livejournal?
Thanks. Ian

One of my favourites too. I have read that story many, many times.
My list of favorite stories are
Brokeback Redemption by Vicopet
Somebody New by Jenna
The Wolf and the Thunderbird by Debutantee 9
Zero at the Bone by MadLori

Bookends
This story is only a fragment, about 4 chapters, but is worth reading. It's a double-universe story, part canon and part AU, with Ennis and Jack in the AU helping raise Jack's granddaughter. In the canon part, the granddaughter meets Ennis many years after the end of the canon story: Ennis has been living up in Lightning Flat, taking care of Jack's mother until her death.
It's worth reading for a thoroughly delightful description of Jack's young granddaughter (who calls Ennis and Jack "Grumpy" and "Buddy") if nothing else.

Thank you. I will check it out. I've got a lot of reading to do!

Ok. I finished "Somebody New" by Jenna. Just loved it! When Ennis knocks on Jacks door, wow.

The author of Somebody New, Jenna, made the decision to take her entire story down and lock her LJ....back in 2006 (or maybe early 2007) as I recall. I do not believe it is available right now.
I don't think it was canon. I think it was a Jack and Ennis get together eventually story, although they had their ups and downs getting there.

But Ian just said he read it . . . ?

But Ian just said he read it . . . ?
People have copies that they are sharing privately (I don't). I am assuming that is where Ian got his? It is not available publicly. The rumor was (although I don't believe Jenna ever came out and confirmed this) is that she received a cease & desist letter from Annie Proulx's publishers. Since other fanfic authors also received C&D letters, the rumor is probably true.

Somebody was kind enough to email me a text file of the story they'd saved.

A couple of new Fav's
"In Plain Sight" by victopet. My 1st Au!Au, and I'm loving it. Ennis as a Amish horse trainer, and Jack as a Philly detective. The story weaves together BBm and Witness (the Harrison Ford movie from the 80's), and does so wonderfully.
http://victopet.livejournal.com/ (http://victopet.livejournal.com/)
and pur very own marge_innavera(talkstocoyotes) story "Gift of Exile". It's a wonderful Ennis moving on story. He is watched over by Jack who gently encourages him to pursue a new life and new love. Very well done

Some AU stories I've recently enjoyed. I think these are really very well done.
"Zero at the Bone" by MadLori (livejournal account closed and purged)
"Best Friends Forever" by sienata (warning super super long)
http://sienata.livejournal.com/122685.html#cutid1 (http://sienata.livejournal.com/122685.html#cutid1)
"Shades of Grey" by Midwest-girl (livejournal account closed and purged)
I recommend these. If you're not really into AU, and I was not either until fairly recently. I hope you'll give these a go. I was very pleasantly surprised at how good they are, and how much I enjoyed them.

I don't think I mentioned "Human Interest and Two Crows Joy" by MadLori.
I read these a while ago and am re-reading them now. I'm about half way through "Two Crows Joy" currently.
If anybody hasn't read them I can recommend them. They are unlike most fan fic's in that they are episodic, like a soap opera, instead of having a clear story arch. I guess the fall into the "Jack Lives' category. What if Jack convinced Ennis to be with him after Ennis's divorce in 1975 or 76? There is plenty of lovely erotica ;), but I guess there is one particular trajectory in the story that I really like; the deepening of Jack and Ennis's love for each other and strengthening of their relationship. How that is accomplished, I'll let the new readers discover on their own.

Human Interest & Two Crows Joy are definitely my favorites, among others.

Yes, I don´t mind sharing.

I am reading In Plain Sight....again ;D
It´s addictive!

Yes it is. One off my fav's too. I hope there will be an update soon, and that she completes the story.
