Title: Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor!!!!! The World of Soccer
Post by: Pipedream on June 09, 2006, 08:29:44 am
"Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor!!!!!!!!! Tor für Deutschland!!!!!"
(Goal! Goal! Goal! Goal!!!!!!! Goal for Germany!!!!!!)

Radio-reporter Herbert Zimmermann could hardly keep it together when German player Helmut Rahn scored the crucial 3:2 against Hungary in the legendary Football (=soccer) World Cup final 1954 in Bern, Switzerland. His emotional commentary is one of the most famous audio documents in the history of German broadcasting and made him a legend. The event itself became known as "Das Wunder von Bern" ("The Miracle of Bern"). Nine years after the collapse of the Third Reich, Germany was suddenly world champion and felt "we are someone again." The unexpected triumph gave the battered nation back some hope and self-confidence and is considered the true birth of post-war Germany by some historians.

Why do I tell you this? Well, today is a historical day for us again. As you might know, Germany is hosting this year’s FIFA World Cup, and the opening game between Germany and Costa Rica is about to start in Munich in a few hours.

Most of you will probably not give a damn about football/soccer, and, usually, I don’t either. However, in honour of the occasion, I felt like gathering some patriotism and let you people know:
You won’t beat us!!! Hehe.

Oh well, we shall see… The truth is: it'll be hard enough for us to reach the Quarter Finals, for our team ain’t never no good these days. But then, miracles happen, don’t they?

In any case, everybody seems to be going mad overhere right now. You can hardly buy anything in a shop that hasn’t a football or the German national flag printed on it. And when I bought a case of beer recently, I got a football along with it...

The bottom line is: there’s no escaping this World Cup, especially not for us press folks. To make things worse, there are four national teams who have chosen their accommodations in my immediate vicinity: Croatia, Ecuador, Tunisia and Ghana. So guess what my radio station (and we reporters) will be doing for the next couple of weeks…
 :P
Well, complaining won't help. Let the madness begin, I say!  ;D

Anybody of you care for football?

Here's the place to post!

See ya on the field

ANKE

 :)

You met any of the players yet?  :D

Not from Ecuador. One of my work mates went there when they arrived last week and had their first public training.

But I've met the national team of Croatia. They stay in Bad Brückenau (even closer to my house than Bad Kissingen, about 15 minutes drive). There was a huge welcome party on monday. I had the chance to interview some of the guys, for example Nico Kovac who has once played for Bayern Munich and speaks perfect German:

Fredi Bobic is a former German national player with Croatian roots. Very nice guy, and good looking! He doesn't belong to the team, though, but was just there as a guest.

And there's the Croatian fans, of course, who are unbelievable. Very friendly, very easygoing party people!

Here's another picture of the crowd:

Yeah, even if you don't like football, somehow you get hooked anyway in an event like this!

Oh Anke, you bring back memories!

I can not say I am still a devoted football fan (or soccer as they call it in US), but I used to be one growing up.  I always root for Germany as long as it’s not against China (Hell I even root for Germany if it’s against China since I know there is just NO HOPE what-so-ever to wish for a different outcome  :)).  The very first football game I ever watched was 82 World Cup final, West Germany against Italy.  I was just a young kid and had been dragged out of bed by my dad at 3:00am just to watch the game.  That was some game!

So I fell in love with the game and kept waiting for one day they find some 20 Chinese men among 1.3 billion populations that can play some football.  Needless to say, my dream was crushed.  For more than 15 years, and who knows how many games, I finally reached a point that I just could not care for Chinese men’s football team any more.  Talking about the feeling when enough is enough.  Since then, I don’t follow football games and its players that close any more.

I still have a few favorite teams.  So if their games are on TV, I might catch a few.  Mostly, I think I will get the report from here.

Go Germany!

Ok..In the World Cup of 2002, I supported Germany for one big reason:  Miroslav Klose

How funny that you mention that, Jenny! Actually, there was an ambitious project kicked off in my area a while ago, and I reported about it. They established a German-Chinese Football Academy in Bad Kissingen in order to prepare a team for the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing. These young guys were welcomed in Bad Kissingen in December 2004 and spent some time here with a very renowned German trainer, made test games throughout Europe, etc.
At the moment, however, it looks like the whole thing has to be given up again because the main sponsor retreated and new ones are not yet in sight. The young talents haven't been seen in town for months, now, I'm afraid to say. I wonder what will become of it...

I've digged up two pictures from the welcome party outside the Bad Kissingen Town Council:

I'm really hoping for Italy to win this world cup. But then again, Spain is always on my wishlist... and I feel they deserve it the most. Spain has some of the best players, but they have not won a world cup.

Jake Watch can exclusively reveal that Hollywood actor and Puggle activist Jake Gyllenhaal has contraversially abandoned his home nation to support England in this year's FIFA World Cup tournament. A source close to the star said, "Jake thinks that the USA can only go so far in this competition and has abandoned the ship before it has even started to sink. Everyone is shocked by his decision". Gyllenhaal's friends and family are reported to be standing by him through this difficult period but people around them say they are not entirely happy. "Stephen and Naomi thought they knew Jake, they thought they'd raised him better than this. I'm not sure how long they can keep up this show," said a friend close to the family.

Awww... so much for that. But it was only 1-0? This is not a good sign for England for things to come if this keeps up. If anything it was Germany that had the best offense I seen so far, though its defense was kinda shaky allowing Costa Rica to score 2 goals.

I got into a huge argument with someone about the US, and how I said they would not stand a chance against the Czechs. They told me the US is very, very good and would win by like 6-0 over the Czech Republic.... whoops...

This is a bad sign of things to come for a supposed "good team". Wait till the US plays against the Italians.

They were equally good teams...

Anyways, I'm a bit disappointed in Brazil. Yes they have managed to get one goal... but their performance is a bit lagging.

Anyhow, here's the original "Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor!" I was talking about at the beginning of this thread. I just cut out a bit of the cheering crowd in the middle...

Hope this works for you guys. I could open it with "Windows Media Player":

Damn it.. I wanted to post that result as I'm from Spain (well I'm half spanish and half italian). I usually cheer on the Italians, but lets hope that the Spanish get through this time. This was nonetheless a great game. Xabi Alonso and David Villa can be thanked for this one...

And don't forget Fernando Torres. Who is only one year older then me... what a hottie...

Germany played a really poor match actually... lots of poor passing... they play against Ecuador (on the 20th) that defeated Poland with much greater ease.

Germany really needs to get their act together...

Yeah, Ecuador. That is going to be quite a task. And I don't really know whom to cheer for. Those people are so nice!  :)

This week I had the wonderful opportunity to talk to some journalists from Ecuador who are staying with their national team in Bad Kissingen right now. They are so happy there, it's amazing. They love it!

I just figured out how to post audio files, and I thought I should share this. Here's two of the guys I interviewed. One of them works for "Canal Uno", a big television company in Ecuador and the other for a monthly Ecuadorian sports magazine and the news agency "Reuters." The quality isn't quite what it was on the original recording, but I had to make a compromise in order to be able to upload longer sound bites...
Enjoy!

I knew it. Another one of my predictions that is correct.. I knew Ecuador was that good to get to the next round.

Trinidad is giving England problems right now...

Edit: Whoops, England got a goal... but still this is a sluggish performance on England's part.
Title: Re: Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor!!!!! FIFA World Cup 2006

England - Trinidad: 2 - 0

After the first eighty minutes of scoreless playing, England finally got a goal in the 83rd minute, and an exhausted Trinidad allowed its defense to crumble allowing England to get a second goal. Again Trinidad's defense basically fell in the last ten minutes, and England basically capitalized on that. I'm still knowing that this performance was a bit sluggish on England's part, and I think England will face problems when it faces other European teams.

Hey yall, I'm late to tune in to this thread but I've enjoyed a couple of matches -- Germany v. Costa Rica and Germany v. Poland.

Honestly I'm hot for the German coach -- can't remember his name -- he's from Stuttgart, no?  My husband considered taking a little vacation to hometown Stuttgart to watch matches with friends, on the telly of course but with such different atmosphere.... thanks for sending some of that ambience, Anke!

Hi Sarah!!  ;D

That German coach's name is Jürgen Klinsmann. He's no native of Stuttgart but a true "Schwabe" nevertheless...  ;)
And he was quite a striker in his active days!

Jürgen Klinsmann:

I'm fairly concerned about several european teams including Sweden, England and Germany. Their performances have been lackluster...

Sweden, like England, has been playing quite sloppy and barely made a goal in the last few minutes again. Sweden I think will be exiting this shortly, with England to follow if they do not quickly improve.

Though nearly all my predictions have been correct, I do not think these two teams will go far this year if the current performance issues persist.

Predictions for tomorrow:

Argentina versus Serbia and Montenegro: Argentina - Argentina is fresh from victory. Serbia is lacking a player after an injury hit one of their players, and their replacement just left. Serbia did put up a solid defense against the Netherlands, however I think Argentina is better then the Netherlands, and is not demoralized. So I say Argentina.

Netherlands versus Ivory Coast: Ivory Coast remains demoralized after their defeat against Argentina, and I must give this one to the Netherlands.

Mexico versus Angola: Mexico is simply the better team, and I do think they will win. Though Angola did put a fight against Portugal, I do not see this lasting against the Mexican team. The Mexicans are fresh from victory against Iran.

Predictions for saturday:

Italy versus United States: ITALY - The US will be completely crushed in this round, and suffer at the hands of the superior Italian team. The Italians have a great offense and spectular defensive mode, which really showed against Ghana. The US will be out of the cup, just like Poland and Costa Rica. Let it be known, I also believe that this will be the US's worst performance since 1990.

Czech Republic versus Ghana: Czech Republic - Though this is a tough call, I do believe Ghana lacks a good offense, though having a solid defense. I believe the Czechs will be able to get at least one goal against Ghana. Let it be warned, Ghana plays very rough and will do anything to stay in the Cup.

Portugal versus Iran: Portugal - Hands down! Portugal will definitely be able to score against the fledging Iranian team. Iran is missing a key player or two I believe to injury.

Argentina as I predicted was just too good. Actually, they were more then I predicted. Serbia put up virtually no defense. They completely crumbled and Argentina was able to capitalize on that every time they had a chance. This performance sharply contrasts with their last world cup performance which was less then good. I think a lot of my old friends in Argentina are happy (I lived there from 2001-2003).

Portugal - Iran: If Iran is playing as poorly as it did against Mexico, it is finished. I think Portugal.

Czech Republic - Ghana: This is actually a hard call. I think the Czechs.

Well, I just have to say this. I am cheering for Holland. They are now 2-0 and you know what? I think they are going to win it. Yes. The Champions!

If for some TERRIBLE reason, Holland does not pull through, I hope England wins it. They are really doing good this year too.

And, if England doesn't win, I hope the U.S. wins  it.

Have I confused you yet? Well, don't worry about anything I just said, because Holland WILL win this year. :)

The US couldn't win it even if they tried. I don't think they are going to even get into the next round.

They haven't even been able to score a single goal for themselves. Just wait until they face up against Ghana, which played better then Italy today. I don't think Holland will win this year. I actually think Argentina will, though I'm always hopeful for Spain. Argentina has Messi... who scored several goals in no time. He's actually the greatest Argentine player since Maradona some might say.

That's a terrible shame. The 11% who plan on watching  it really doesn't surprise me for two reasons. Soccer is still gaining popularity in this country (it still has a ways to go, but at least it IS catching on) and also because most of the American television channels are airing very little of the World Cup.

The other thing you mentioned: 56% of Americans didn't know it was being played in Germany... well that is just terrible. This tells me many people are just not paying an attention to it at all. It really shouldn't matter if a person likes soccer or not. It is a world event, and this alone should be enough to make people pay at least a little attention to it. Or at the very least, know what country it is being played in.

That is just my opinion though.

Giancarlo,  please say something positive about Holland! Did you see anything good? I think you know much more about this than I do,  and I would  really love to see Holland win this time!

Do they have any hope at all? ???

Okay some things.. they are gonna go to the next round, but they are in the same group as Argentina. That might be a huge problem.

http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/schedule.html

They play in two days against Argentina... even if they lose they are still qualified. Okay, lets say they get to the next round. They play against Argentina again... and that is where I don't think they would make it.

BTW, I must compliment Tunisia on their solid defense.

I'm really hoping for Italy to win this world cup. But then again, Spain is always on my wishlist... and I feel they deserve it the most. Spain has some of the best players, but they have not won a world cup.

For what is worth, people are celebrating every game Spain wins as if it was the whole tournament. At least in Madrid. Last night  the word GOOOOOOL! rumbled as if it were a thunderbolt or something. All bars were packed, and people were celebrating on the streets until very late.

Well the thing was the Ecuadoreans did not put out Agustin Delgado today.. and I'm not really sure why... he's the best player on the Ecuadorean team. I guess they knew they were already qualified, and wanted to save him from any possible injury.

And I thought Torres was the best striker?

But anyways, good job for Germany...

Lucise, you can have Klose if I can have Podolski.

Damn that penalty kick from Ghana!  I wish it had been an honorable tie.  Ghana would still have advanced, and USA would be more comfortable on the plane ride home, since their tails could drape over into the aisle instead of being between their legs.

But of course I'm really happy for Ghana.

Ghana really deserved that win I think... they didn't have Gyan Asamoah.. I just didn't think the US played well at all in the game. I'm glad that the US at least got one of its own goals in the first round. Ghana had better players, and a better strategy.

I'll take Fernando Torres or Cristiano Ronaldo (portugal), over Klose or Podolski.

And....

Brazil - 4
Japan - 1

Well for me Torres just has that golden foot... his drives are insane. He totally smashed up the Tunisians, with the back up of players like Raul (a legend in Spain, like Maradona and Ronaldo).

I don't know about Ronaldo though... he's kinda on the big size... he's not the fastest, but if he gets in position for the goal box.. he'll get it. He has one of the strongest kicks I've seen.

Today the second round starts in Munich with the encounter

Germany – Sweden!!! Yay!

It's a beautiful summerday overhere. But, alas, I'll have to drag myself to a pub in the late afternoon to watch this with a couple of friends. Life can be so hard…  ;D

Just in case this will be the last time we hear the German national anthem in this tournament (which nobody seriously believes, hunh?) I've attached the version of the little soccer-players from Oerlenbach below who represented Germany in the Mini-World Cup, my broadcasting station organized in May. They sang it exclusively for me and outdid themselves!  ;)

Sadly, they didn't win in the end. Our Mini-World-Champion was Ukraine (represented by a team from Fürth-Poppenreuth near Nürnberg)!

But, God, what happened today? When Portugal scored that goal I didn't really worry about it too much because it was so early in the game. Holland never recovered though. It was a vicious game too! >:(

At least England is still in it.

I guess I am going to have to change my sig now! :(

Too bad, your team dropped out of the tournament, David! The Dutch fans were really funny people! About 1.000 of them camped in Wertheim-Bestenheid, about an hour from where I live.

But you are right. That game was truly vicious! Spiegel-Online wrote:

MATCH REPORT
Portugal Defeats Holland at the Battle of Nuremberg
Portugal defeated the Netherlands 1-0 on Sunday in an utterly bizarre World Cup match marred by a plethora of fouls, yellow cards and four ejections. The depleted Portuguese squad will now meet England in the quarter-finals.

Call it the Battle of Nuremberg. Portugal defeated the Netherlands in a nasty and ill-tempered 1-0 brawl on Sunday that saw both teams have two players sent off. Russian referee Valentin Ivanov brandished a record 20 cards in total -- 16 of them yellow -- as Portugal scraped through to extend coach Luiz Felipe Scolari's record World Cup winning streak to 11 matches.

Ugly scenes marred the match as first Costinha, then Khalid Boulahrouz, then Deco and finally Giovanni van Bronckhorst saw red.
[...]
The disciplinary nightmare ruined a promising encounter between two of the tournament's promising teams which had amassed 32 matches unbeaten between them. It was Marco van Basten's first competitive defeat as Dutch coach and leaves the Netherlands still waiting for their first win against Portugal since 1991.

Well I'm not really. Italy lost a defender... I really think the refs in this game are making bad calls. I think they made plenty of bad calls during the Portugal/Holland game. Deco DID NOT DESERVE THAT RED CARD!

Yes, the refs are casting a weird shadow on the tournament.  Well, SOME of the refs.
Thanks for the Podolski pics, Anke.

By the way Anke, my husband is about to book a flight home to Stuttgart in time for the final game thanks, in part, to your many pictures of the happy insanity in his homeland.  He's feeling very homesick in the face of it all.  He'll leave July 4, to drive home the message of which country he really loves.

Anke -

Thank you for posting the audio file of the children singing the German National Anthem! That was really cute! Actually I thought they sounded very good. Also thanks for posting all those pictures of the World Cup. I love looking at them. It is almost as good as being there! :D

Thanks again.

The nation that didn't deserve it? I beg your pardon?? Germany won deservedly, while the highly praised Argentinians didn't live up to their reputation. To make things worse: they were very bad losers indeed, not even willing to exchange trikots with the German team and almost starting a fight at the end. Sorry. But that's bad style.

Germany is going down against Italy! Besides Germany hit that Argentine goalie pretty hard (the Argentinians put in this half wit goalie to replace him)... and they should of got red carded for it!

ITALIA 3 - UKRAINE 0

Luca Toni is better then Klose by a long shot. WAY BETTER! He rocks. His first goal was beautiful... a fast kick, and the second one was just a short kick because he was standing right in front of the goal. The Italian team played like it did in 1982, and at that time it won the world cup. They played together as a team, and have one of the best goalies (Buffon).

Gianluigi Buffon - the best goalie in the world cup! One who would of deflected ALL GERMAN PENALTY KICKS.

I'm going to savor Germany's winning run for as long as it lasts.  I thought their win over Argentina was deserved indeed -- I give them bonus points for coming from behind.  Tying the match at the 80-minute mark against a really tough team was pretty amazing, and then they held them, and just  plain outkicked 'em!

Title: Re: Tor! Tor! Tor! Tor!!!!! FIFA World Cup 2006
Post by: Giancarlo on June 30, 2006, 06:57:31 pm
Germany outkicked Argentina? When? I saw the whole match and I couldn't find it.

Hey if they played by the rules and didn't injure that one goalkeeper by getting him right in the ribs... then I would say "good for Germany". They really injured that goalkeeper, and the Argentinians put in this below average goalie. Germany should of got red carded for that one. So really... who is playing by the rules here? The Germans played more dirty then any other team I saw yet. And their playing all in all was sluggish and just downright poor.

Well now, Germany will have to face the Azzurri... tough luck.

Here's an article from The Times on yesterday's match:

Quote
Germany hit the spot yet again
By Simon Barnes
Germany 1 Argentina 1
(aet; 1-1 after 90min; Germany win 4-2 on pens)

WHAT IS THE SECRET OF GERMANY and penalties? Perhaps they do not even know themselves. But on a night of fraught and desperate footballing passion, the World Cup hosts came back from the brink and a goal down to beat Argentina and advance into the semi-finals. It seems that there are no atheists yet in this nation of believers.

They put four perfect penalties past Leonardo Franco, the substitute Argentina goalkeeper, in the shoot-out and it was enough. Jens Lehmann rose to the occasion as only a German goalkeeper can and saved from Roberto Ayala and Esteban Cambiasso. Thus a night on which Germany looked as if the momentum had left them was turned back to joy by means of tireless running, overwhelming will in the face of disappointment and, in the end, that extraordinary tradition of brilliance at the art of the penalty shoot-out. Perhaps England should have looked for a German manager.

As the Germans celebrated, so the players, who had been getting on each others’ nerves all match, turned on each other, with Gabriel Heinze, of Manchester United and Argentina, much to the fore. Although the kerfuffle was more unseemly than scandalous, featuring pushing and shoving rather than haymaking punches, it was a pity that an evening of high drama and high intensity should end with the tiresome rather than the heroic side of the game. Leandro Cufré, an unused Argentina substitute, was shown a red card after the final whistle and there was a footnote provided by José Pekerman, the Argentina coach announcing that he was standing down after two years in charge. “I can leave with my head held high,” he said.

It was a high-stakes poker-shoot of a match. It was the first at the tournament contested by teams who would be seriously disappointed not to win the World Cup; also, teams for whom a quarter-final defeat would be a sack-the-coach, shoot-the-players disaster. The Argentinians felt it dreadfully at the end.

The atmosphere was crackling with neuroses from the start, with every attack accompanied by the almost unbearable thought that it opened you up for a potential counter-thrust. It was plain from the first light, feathery exchanges that losing was more than either team could bear. The scuffling end was perhaps inevitable.

Maybe football was never meant to assume an importance such as this. Last night, matters seemed too grave for anyone’s peace of mind. It was also the first high-level culture clash of the tournament and it was intriguing to see the matter from a neutral perspective. The Argentinians love deception above all things. It was, as ever, their first resort as they entered the match: deception by means of ball skill, angle of pass or of run, change of pace or of direction. Also, of course, deception by means of subterfuge: the trip, the tug and the judicious collapse.

Each team was led by its playmaker: two iron-door defences, two key-masters. Juan Román Riquelme, of Argentina, was more theatrical, liking his moment of pause in which to perform a misdirection ploy — “Ladies and gentlemen, I have nothing up my sleeve.” For Riquelme, football is a kind of chess and the checkmate move seems always just beyond his grasp.

Michael Ballack plays a different role — less showy, more mobile, demanding more of the ball. He is a glutton for responsibility. He wants to matter, to make a difference. Ballack was out there seeking to find the right key for all of Germany and in the first half he both created and attempted to finish the best chance — he cares so much that he would certainly head in his own crosses if he could. He set up the move, darted into the penalty area and headed narrowly wide.

Such angst-ridden matches need a goal and it came at the beginning of the second half. A sumptuously flighted corner from Riquelme swirled away from Lehmann and as the Arsenal goalkeeper stood back, Ayala flung himself at the ball with a wild, uninhibited courage. He made thunderous contact and in that single instant, all anxiety vanished from the game.

For Germany, it was attack or be damned. No time now to be clever or patient. A little more than half an hour to score, or spend your life ruing the fact that you failed.

Germany played the last half-hour of normal time as if it were the last two minutes, doing everything at several hundred kilometres an hour, convinced that they could explode their way through the Argentina defence if only their knees went up and down fast enough: “Do not think, run, get the ball back in play, run some more.”

Pekerman then decided to settle for 1-0, taking off Riquelme and Hernán Crespo. It was a crucial error. It brought more high-speed defiance from Germany and then a cross from Ballack into the area, glanced on by Tim Borowski, for Miroslav Klose to come darting through for an incisive finish, the more remarkable for all that it meant to his team. It was enough to reignite hope and to send Germany on into the horrors of extra time and penalties.

Whoa, whoa! You really scare the shit out of us, ya know?

But this might be a comfort for you: statistics speak against Germany. Never has a German team won against Italy in any World Cup, so far. Guess it's about time...  ;)
What ever happens on Tuesday, I plan to enjoy that game with a good pizza and a vino rosso!  ;D

Good pizza and a good vino sounds like a good idea to me! I might have to do it too. I'm not quite sure who I will be cheering for, but if I manage to get enough vino down, I probably won't even care. And pizza sounds good too, just as long as it's not a fish pizza. (Sorry, I guess that is one of those inside jokes)

Keep posting those pics too Anke. Some of those guys are hummba-mummmba-mommmma.... yeah..... they sure are cute!! :)

I knew Italy was going to win because we simply had a team together that knew how to play! This is a fantastic day for Italian soccer. Everyone was talking crap about Italy, but like in the 1982 World cup Italy came out on top. Italy did not do all that great in the first few rounds because they were saving their energy for later. A mistake Germany made.... expend all of their energy in the first few games and then get eliminated by the Italians.

For the final, which team are you rooting for?

It’s a hard one for me…  I really don't have a strong position over either teams.  But when you watch the game, you always have to pick a side, so I will root for France just because of Zidane.

How misguided. France should definitely not win this. Where was Zidane? If anything, the match between France and Portugal was sloppy. Both sides were sloppy. If it wasn't for one questionable penalty kick France wouldn't be going on forward. Italy has so much more and Italy deserves this cup far more then France.

I have nothing to fear as I do think Italy will win against France. Italy has so much more going for it. One or two great players will not save an average team as far as France is concerned. The Italian team is full of great players.

1998 Repeat NOT!!!!! Rather say 1982 Repeat. Italy just has the offense France doesn't have. Italy also has a better defense then France. Italy will put everything they have in the final game and they outmatch France. Zidane this, Zidane that... Zidane is out of his prime.

And you know what? If I was French I'd be concerned about the otherwise dismal performance that France had against Portugal... Portugal had near complete control of the ball, but managed to miss quite a few key shots. Still, this exposes deficiencies in France. France's defense is also abnormally weak. A bit concerning for a team that has made it to the finals!  ::) France only got lucky through the penalty kick.  ::)

Well celebrate your penalty kick victory. Forever how long it lasts. I dislike the French team because they lack the technical ability teams like Italy and Germany have. Argentina has better technical ability then France. Argentina got put into one of the toughest groups too. How disgraceful? Why is it? Because I'm attacking a team that doesn't deserve to win?

Keep in mind, I have nothing against the French people. Only against its government and cup team.

Well you read incorrectly. I am only against the French government. Afterall, I never seen a government neglect a large portion of its population so badly in a developed country.

I guess you guys just go with the forum bandwagon. Too bad for you... not my fault you appreciate a penalty kick victory over two awesome high flying Italian goals made against Germany.

Gian, I happen to read English as well as I write it and speak it, and yes, you did write you do not like the French (as a Spaniard, I remember you said). I'd find it just as offensive if you'd stated the same about "THE" Swiss, or "THE" Belgians, or "THE" Peruvians...

So yes, we are enjoying our penalty victory, and Bartez is a bloody fantastic goal keeper anyway. :)

Incorrect. I never said such a thing. I said I do not like the French government. THE government.

Your penalty kick victory was rather weak, and your team was disorganized and all over the place. Really, Italy has a lot more going for it. Say how many goals have teams made against Italy so far (discounting that disaster own goal)? ZERO.

The way Portugal and France played was disgraceful and awful. I thought it was supposed to be a semi-final game.

I'm not xenophobic. And I will never admit that I said I hate or dislike the french people. I'm sorry but I just don't like being accused of such things.

France really struggled against Portugal.

I was actually fearing Portugal versus Italy more, then France versus Italy. France just got lucky with one penalty kick.

You know Isabelle I was mad at the french team because of the way they beat up Spain! But I have gotten over it already. I have to admit they're playing very good. Their defense tactics are very good, although sometimes they get a little dirty. Thought they played dirty against Spain, but that's football. I loved how Zidane hugged Figo at the end of the game, and how the exchange their shirts, and just put them on neverminding the sweat. Zidane did the same thing with Ronaldo when they played against Brasil.

Even though I think France is winning this cup, I'll be rooting for Italy on Sunday, SORRY! Nothing against the french, seriuously. Just that I have tons of italians friends here in Madrid. (They'd kill me otherwise, LOL  ;D)

LOL!! And you're not afraid I might kill you when I see you in London? If you dare come over, that is??
No, the tone in which you speak, well, write, is so devoid of aggressiveness that I don't mind you supporting the Italians. You are not deriding last night's French victory. Hell, I like the Spaniards so much, I wouldn't have minded if they'd won against France (I really am not nationalistic in the least, nor into football really). But hey, it is so good for me to see this team win, because back in 1998, their victory took on an anti-racist claim: they were the same players: Black, Arab, white, and this team winning was like: this is how France will win, by having all colors of people come together. And the Black and Arab youths had national heroes to identify with, it was really a big thing. So, I wouldn't mind witnessing such a great spirit of togetherness, "brotherhood" as our motto says.

More important than nationalism, politics, governments or anything else is the question that's been troubling me:

Do soccer players have

a) better sex after a winning match
b) better sex after a losing match
c) no sex -- are you f--king kidding me, honey?  Did you see me running for two straight hours out there?  I know I'm made of muscle but please, can we do it in the morning?

Fraternité! I wish people had that sense of brotherhood in their everyday lives. It would make better world. But back to football, it sad to see the violence among the football fans. I'm not so much of a football fan. I only watch the world cup because its unique, but other than that, I couldn't care less. I've seen a few matches though, and sometimes people in the public yell racist insults to black players. I saw a game once (Barça agaisnt Getafe) and some people were refering to Barça player Etoo, who's from Cameroon, as the monkey. That was so rude, and so out of place. Same thing happens to Ronaldinho and other non white players , they get insulted for their skin colors for some stupid game. I hate that.

Ps. I still don't know if I'm going to make it to London. I doubt it to tell you the truth, because I might have to participate in a conference here in Spain. But I'll let you know.

Oh, Aragonés is a racist pig. No doubt about it. Everyone knows that in Spain. He got in trouble here not long ago for making racist remarks against a player, can't remember who.  Few people like him. He's a total pig.

Hey Natali, that reminds me of something I have read a while ago. In an interview with the German paper "Die Tageszeitung" the actor Daniel Brühl (who has a Spanish mother) said something about latent racism in Spain and gave football as an example. During a football match of the F.C. Barcelona, he said, he could hear guttural sounds resembling monkeys directed at black players. He pointed out that something like this would be commented on by the Chancellor immediately, should it happen in Germany. In Spain, however, nobody seemed to care much.

A couple of Spanish newspapers and websites quoted him:

Quote

Yap.  I remember such a case with Samuel Eto'o who is originally from Cameroon and plays for Barcelona!

He endured quite alot of racial insults during one game he was reduced to tears ..  :'(  (this happened in Spain..)
The crowd from the opposing team and some 'fans' had to be warned to stop the monkey sounds they were making ...wtf is up with that??  :(

Yeah, wtf, indeed. I'm really happy that there hasn't been anything like that in our World Cup, so far. On the contrary, I really can confirm what Isabelle said:

it is so good for me to see this team win, because back in 1998, their victory took on an anti-racist claim: they were the same players: Black, Arab, white, and this team winning was like: this is how France will win, by having all colors of people come together. This tournament really brings upon a feeling of brotherhood. During the last couple of weeks the sunny weather seems to have sunk deeply in people's minds overhere. Imagine, there have been millions and millions of people celebrating in the streets after every single game Germany won (about one million in Berlin's famous "Fan-Mile" alone), and you hardly heard anything of fights, vandalism or racist incidents. On the contrary: foreigners were thrilled in the face of the welcoming and hearty atmosphere they encountered everywhere.
The motto of this World Cup is "Die Welt zu Gast bei Freunden" which translates literally into "The World as Guest at Friends'". And it's true. It really looks like Germany has made some new friends recently. From what I heard and read, the foreign press was quite impressed with what was going on here, also with the perfect organization, the security/savety and the overall light mood. It's a great international party, and I hope we can keep that feeling for a while, even though we are not going to win this tournament. This country hasn't seen so many happy faces since the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, and it's just so much fun to experience this!
Well, I'm convinced that the party is not over yet. Peoples' tears have dryed already and next weekend we will cheer for our boys like crazy, no matter if they win or lose against Portugal!

I want to see more of this!  :D

KLINSMANN'S REAL VICTORY

Germany's New Attitude

By Marc Young in Berlin

Germany's World Cup dream might be over, but that doesn't mean the tournament won't have a lasting effect on the country. The soccer spectacle has already altered the way the world sees the Germans and even how the Germans see themselves.

Germany's coach Jürgen Klinsmann has helped inspire the country.
Germany's team might not have made it into the final, but the country is clearly a better place for hosting the 2006 World Cup. Long considered a dour and gray nation of moaners, Germany has shown the world -- and itself -- that maybe it's not so bad after all.

The soccer tournament has unleashed a torrent of feel-good vibes from Hamburg to Munich that has stunned the locals probably even more than all the foreign visitors from around the globe. Germans -- long shy about expressing positive attitudes toward their country in light of their difficult history -- have experienced three weeks of unabashed fun and pride decked out in the national colors black, red and gold.

The Germans are positive. The Germans are friendly. The Germans have hosted an unforgettable World Cup. How can this be? For years, commentators both at home and abroad have derided the Germans for their pessimism and often glum or crabby manner. A sudden transformation brought on by the sunny, California-style optimism of German national soccer team coach Jürgen Klinsmann?

To be sure, Germans have reveled in the wave of enthusiasm that has accompanied the unexpectedly strong showing of Klinsmann's young and confident squad. But now that the team has been tossed out by Italy, will the wave break and roll back leaving Teutons with a World Cup- sized hangover?

Not right away at least. Two ladies working in a Berlin supermarket on Wednesday were so extremely friendly and nice that one gets the impression Germans are as happy to have shed their old image as they are about the World Cup.

Besides, much of what has seemed so surprising over the last three weeks is less some dramatic transformation than simply a new perspective on things. Germany was always full of friendly and optimistic people like Klinsmann -- it's just that they were often drowned out by all the complainers and pessimists. The World Cup hasn't changed the foundations of the country, but it has changed the balance within it.

Not such a bad place after all

Just as Germany was never as bad a place as many foreigners thought, it was certainly much nicer than many Germans were willing to admit. Yes, there are problems, serious ones. The economy might be doing okay at the moment, but far too many people remain jobless. And Chancellor Angela Merkel's so-called grand coalition appears more willing to simply milk taxpayers than undertake real reforms that would overhaul the country's bloated welfare system or creaky healthcare.

Still, Germany remains a very comfortable place to live. And much of the new attitude unleashed during the World Cup simply seems to be people realizing this.

And Germans aren't the only ones. The black, red and gold flag fest has been a boon for the country's integration of its citizens with immigrant backgrounds. Many Turks and Arabs flew the German colors at their shops or on their cars. A small gesture perhaps, but an important one to both those Germans concerned about integration and those immigrants acknowledging that this is their home too.

This outpouring of good-natured patriotism is only logical: if the Germans are more willing to express their affection for the good aspects of their own country, then so too will others.

Of course, there will be challenges both private and public that will make it difficult for some Germans to stick to their newfound positive ethos. But the naysayers no longer have the upper hand here. Many optimists will not cede the country back to the moaners so easily. And that, in many respects, is a greater gift from Klinsmann and his team than winning the World Cup ever could be.

I just didn't Spain did that well that day. And it was quite sad. But really, I don't think France is playing all that well. People on this forum are crowding behind the French, even though they were really sloppy against Portugal. Portugal was sloppy too. I don't see what is so good about the French team. Zidane is quite old, and does not shine like the way he did in 1998. The Italians have a lot more going for them. How can the French team win this cup? What do they have that is sooooooo special? I mean come on... the Italians have Andrea Pirlo, Iaquinta, Buffon (the best goalie in this cup), Cannavaro, Totti, Gattuso, Gilardino, Del Piero, Luca Toni... and others..

I just don't see much in the French team beyond Thierry and Zidane... and they are not enough against a whole team of stars. Zidane is past his prime.

Also the Spanish coach apologized for the comments he made. Spain is not a racist country based on one comment! If anything, I think France is the one that has more issues with racism.

Germany v. Portugal will be SATURDAY 8pm local time, or 2pm EDT.

Anke: thanks so much for the pictures, and the article, which Ruediger read to me as I hemmed a skirt earlier today.  He's off to the Soccerfest that is Germany as we speak, and will probably watch Saturday's game in Stuttgart's fan park.  And visit Klinsmann's family's Baeckerei.  And bring me back chocolate soccer balls.  And Lion bars.

Look, I'll be a good girl now and put you on my ignore list (you'll be the only one), because you're so easy to annoy that I'm never gonna stop trying. I'll admit to that wicked streak in me  ;). Bye!

;D Much speculation has given Italy the edge... a significant one at that matter.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13733998/page/2/

Quote
Coaches:
Sometimes, the World Cup is a matter of nerve, as much as anything. Jose Pekerman of Argentina became too timid with a one-goal lead over Germany, pulling two of his best attacking players and then blowing the match. By contrast, Italy coach the braver Marcello Lippi went with four forwards in the final minutes of overtime against Germany, scoring two goals and avoiding the dreaded penalty shootout.

Domenech is not a beloved figure among the France players, and he emanates neither the fatherly aura of Lippi nor the emotional commitment of a Luis Scolari. He is more a cold-hearted tactician, but then he has such leaders on the field that he requires neither a pep talk nor a blackboard.

EDGE: Italy

X-factors:
France is likely to start five players over age 30, with only three off days since its semifinal victory over Portugal.

Italy has had the easier, less wearing brackets – with the big exception of that match in Dortmund. With the extra day of rest and a younger roster, the Italians should be fitter.

The problems on France have been more internal, minor mutinies against Domenech. The outside crises that have dogged Italy at this tournament – the bribery probe and the apparent suicide attempt by a former Juventus teammate – have only brought the Italians closer together.

“They are the best team in the tournament, a homogeneous group,” said Thuram, who was a teammate with five of them at Juventus. “I feel they have a great solidarity. In the past, there were always problems with that team, but now they are working together.”

Always remember: The first goal wins. No loser in the final of the World Cup has scored a goal since 1986.

PREDICTION: Italy 2, France 0.

Funny, I never thought of the Germans as moaning pessimists! But yeah, great article. What it says at the end about the minorities is exactly what happened in France in 1998. So I hope that spirit lasts in Germany, because unfortunately it didn't in France. We would need a French victory every 4 years for that feeling of fraternity to last here  ;).

Here's a link:

http://www.fotograma.com/notas/actualidad/3743.shtml (http://www.fotograma.com/notas/actualidad/3743.shtml)

Hey Anke. I remember that incident at the Barça game but I disagree with Brühl that nobody here seemed to care much. That's not true. He's exaggerating. I remember that after the incident a lot of things were done about it and Government officials did verbally condemn what happened. There was a massive campaign to end racism and violence at football games and society in general. I remember the case very well because it was a big issue here, and it lasted several months.

I think Brhul is being very unfair by saying that and a bit arrogant. I'm not from this country but his remarks bother me. Just because his mother is from Barcelona he can't come here and accuse everyone of being racist without getting his fact rights.

I'd like to point out that I'm not denying there isn't racism in Spain. But usually those incident in football games are caused by a small group of people. There is a problem here within the football culture, which the police has been trying get rid of for a long time. Some football fan clubs are organized by people who are downright racist. Not just against black or other non white individuals,  but against people from other provinces such as Cataluña. There's one whose leaders were arrested about two years ago, El Ultra Sur, that is attached to the Real Madrid Football Club. It turned out that they were neo- nazi skinheads and were behind some racial crimes. Those people give other spaniards a bad name. Not every one here agrees with that kind of thought and behavior.

As for Etoo, I feel bad for him but he hasn't helped his case either. After the racist incident Brhul talks about he got support for a lot of people, then during a game he spit on the face of another player because of a disagreement within the field. According to the referee, the spitting was totally uncalled for, and some people who had supported him, backed out on him. Afterwards, to make things worse, when Barça won the league, Etoo grabbed a loudspeaker during the victory party and began chantting to the whole public (and in live TV): Madrid cabron saluda al campeon (Madrid, pricks, greet the champion). He had been all over the place promoting peace duirng football games, and then he does this.

Etoo of course does not deserve to be insulted because of his skin color and race, but football is a hot zone and as a sport figure he shouldn't have done that. Some people who had supported Etoo were Real Madrid fans, and they backed out on him.

This is why I don't like football. I don't mind the world cup,  but I don't really follow it. Too much hatred and rivalry there.

AND FOR TONIGHT:

Yeah!! Go Germany!! ;D

At the moment, the country is preparing for the last game of our heroes (it starts at 9 pm, not 8 pm CET!). The first fans arrived at the Berlin Fan Mile around noon, and especially Stuttgart, where the game takes place, is going crazy. The public viewing area there had to be closed in the late afternoon because it was already filled with 40.000 people. They celebrate Klinsmann and his boys as if they had won the tournament. For Klinsmann, who grew up in Stuttgart, it's a home game, of course.

These girls think Germany is the "World Champion of the Hearts"... I love it!

Wow!

Germany - Portugal: 3:1!!! Yay!!

I don't know if there has ever been such a vibrating atmosphere in a stadium when two teams were playing out rank three and four in a World Cup. Wow! What a party! What a celebration! Goosebumbs! The Gottlieb Daimler Stadium in Stuttgart was a bubbling cauldron. And even the Portugese fans were joining in the party at the end, singing and dancing together with the hosts. Talk about feel good vibes. They are all over tonight! Have I ever mentioned Germans had a problem with being proud of their country? Forget about that. Tonight, I'm very proud of my folks. Our team has played a great tournament, everything went real smooth (hardly any crime, hardly any violence!), and Germany has been a great host. Austria and Switzerland, who will host the next European Cup, have already announced that they will try and copy everything that Germany did this year... What a great compliment! Sigh.

What's wrong with the French defense?

Haha, I'm trying hard to be impartial, although the Italians were so impolite as to kick our asses in the semi final...
Anyways, I've poured myself a "neutral" German red wine today.  ;)

What an awful awful foul by Zidane.   It’s a shame for a person that showed a lot of heart in the game up till that foul.  Sometime you just wonder what was going through that person’s mind at that critical moment.  Particular for him at the end of this professional careers, that a disgraceful way to end otherwise a great career.

Ok on with the PK.

My pride in the tournament peaked with yesterday's terrific match between Germany and Portugal.  Maybe there's some light and magic to a game between "losers" who have been to the mountaintop and tumbled down, and are playing more out of love than out of bloodlust.  Maybe that's romanticizing, but that's the way I see it.  And yes, I was hoping like crazy for Germany, so I got a little bit o' satisfaction.

Where's that heart emoticon when I need it?

WELL DONE ITALY

Even though the French team didn't exactly lose the match  :-X

But OMG! Whatever happened to Zidane? Did any of you in your country get the explanation? Because we didn't. We can take a defeat, as after all they went all the way to the final - which not many people expected - but we are just so puzzled at the way Zidane hit the Italian player! My German partner says there's an awful lot of racism among the Italian football/soccer players, and that that Italian player must've been extremely offensive in a racist manner for Zidane to behave this way. Any hint anyone ?

France did lose the match in the penalty kicks. The penalty kicking is part of the game whether you want to admit it or not.

Zidane has temper issues. He has done this before. The italian player taunted him a little, but he should of just cooled off. He has a history of kicking players and such. He did it in 1998 and wasn't playing against Togo. The Italian players are not racist. Great, now you are spewing off some unfounded rumors.

Agreed Jenny, but you've got to realize Zidane certainly didn't do this without a good reason, even if it remains inexcusable.

We owe this to the best goalie in the world, Buffon:

http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news;_ylt=AgfAVe7ihW5gDXbkKFJep3Qmw7YF?slug=ap-wcup-italy&prov=ap&type=lgns

ERLIN (AP) -- Italy never lost a game this World Cup in large part because goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon was himself unbeatable.

Buffon allowed just two goals in seven games, but neither was scored by an opponent from the run of play.

One score was an own-goal by an Italian defender, the second was a penalty kick that put France up 1-0 before Italy tied it 1-1 and went on to win Sunday's final 5-3 on penalty kicks. Italy's other five games were shutout wins.

"It's never crossed my mind that I would be scored on," Buffon said.

Isabelle,

I feel really sorry for him as people will always mention that foul when they talk about him from now on.  I don't think he deserves such an ending (well he did deserve the red card.) :(

No word on the nature of their verbal exchange here in US.  I too wondered what tipped him off.  But anyway that was, as you said, inexcusable. He let his emotion get the better of him and forgot the big picture here. [sigh]

I really feel bad for the French nation. Their team clearly dominated the second half of the game, and nobody could foresee Zidane's fatal blackout. How could something like this happen to a routinier like him?? Darn it. I so hoped for a worthy farewell of that great player. Kahn and Figo had a better one on Saturday.

Anyways, am I bitter? Not really. It wasn't the great encounter everybody had hoped for in the final, of course, and neither the Italian nor the French team gave continual convincing performances throughout the tournament.
But then, that's the game. Somebody has to win in the end.

One thing is for sure: I love both countries, and I'll be spending my summer vacations in Italy this year as usual (no offence meant to the French, but Bavaria and Italy are just so close...) ;) My little daughter even has an Italian name: Franca...   ::)

Well, Italy is World Champion and that calls for some appropriate music, doesn't it?

Azzurro!!! (Not the Adriano Celentano version, but still... )  ;D

I really don't think France dominated the game at all. They did for part of the 2nd half but it wasn't enough. I told many of my friends that Buffon would prevent France from winning. It came down to Gianluigi Buffon is going to be treated as a national hero. I think France and Italy played very well. I'm sorry that Zidane could not brush something off like that, but he has a history of losing his temper. The sad thing is his career has now ended on a very sad note.

That first penalty kick too was a joke... the one in the first half. The Italians didn't even touch the player. As far as I'm concerned, the referee made a bad call.

What a shame for the youths in this country for whom Zidane represented so much (and I'm sure we're gonna hear some awful comment from our National Front, the French fascist/neo-nazi party, who already commented in the past on the "colour" and "origin" of our players! Starting tomorrow I'm sure).

Apparently Zidane's reaction wasn't Materazzi's fault. He lost his temper, that's all. When they were struggling for the ball, Materazzi grabbed Zidane from behind, but didn't hurt him, more or less hugged him (can't really describe it). And Zidane was pissed off about it. They got into an argument, and he hit Materazzi with his head.

That was so unfortunate. I went to the Real Madrid Cafe Bar, at the Bernabeu (Real Madrid's football stadium) to watch the game with my italian friends. More than half the people there were rooting for France because of Zidane since he's a Real Madrid player (well was until recently). I think we were practically the only ones rooting for Italy.  When Zidane lost his temper and hit Materazzi for no apparent reason, the bar went silent. No one could believe it. My italian friends were disappointed. They wanted Italy to win but they admire Zidane. Some are Real Madrid's fans. It was a very sad scene.

I was rooting for Italy, but I think Zidane is an excellent football player and sport figure. It's very  unfortunate he couldn't control his temper. I feel sorry for him.

Aww, I love your pics, Anke! Germany definitely did a fantastic job of the whole hosting of the world cup  :).

And today, reading Time Magazine, The New York Times, and CNN breaking news, I was amazed at the support they showed the French team and even Zidane, not pointing the finger in spite of the deserved red card! They (CNN) even went as far as to say that Materazzi ,who got head butted, played dirty throughout the world cup, and that Zidane had tried to bring the referee's attention to the fact the Italian players were always hampering the French players in a way that wasn't fair play - but he was just told to play on - and so Zidane's temper boiled over in a way it shouldn't have. They said too the Italian player must've said something offensive. I hope we find out in the end. They also implied that it was a shame Zidane had done that, otherwise France would've won. I don't know about that, but it was heart-warming to read it from the US press ;)
We were very unlucky too to lose Henry and Vieira, 2 excellent players. But that's life.
Thuram was unconsolable, it broke my heart to see him crying so.
Still, the whole country addressed a huge THANK YOU to the whole French team, for the fabulous moments they made us live (and they don't have to face any court of justice... :-X)

Those are just rumors and no one can know for sure. I think only Zidane and Materazzi can know what was said (and maybe some teammates around if they heard it). But still, teams are known to taunt the other team in any sport. I know that from playing sports myself. It is should just be ignored. Remember the old saying some of us say when we were kids: "Sticks and stones breaks my bones but words never hurt me."

That still applies.

I feel bad for Zidane, yes, emotions were high, it was the World Cup Finals after all!
Zidane lost his temper.  It's too bad he pounded the Italian player, but I am certain that he was provoked.
Shit happens!  He still remains a very great player and that is how I will remember him!
I just hope Materazzi was not majorly injured or anything.

Anyway ....

Listen up, if you're accusing me of being violent that's very serious. I will attack someone verbally (and I have tried  reducing that up a bit on IMDB), but in no way would I punch someone, headbutt them or assault them in any way. You better have some proof.

I'm much better on here then IMDB, because I don't have to deal with people like jec attacking me viciously. What do you expect me to do? Just let it go?  ::)

All I am saying is that its easy to say "Ignore it" if someone makes a racist or nasty comment, but its not that easy.
And nope, I dont have evidence that you punch out people (that was not my point), but verbally, you dont let anything slide..do ya?  That's what I was saying.

Anke, more thanks for more pics.

PARTYOTISM -- perfect word.

Partyotismus?

Ruediger will be sending pictures -- he had a wonderful time in Stuttgart Saturday and Sunday (especially Saturday) and tomorrow he's headed for the Black Forest to visit friends.  Sigh, it is kind of a letdown that it's over.

Partyotismus. Absolut korrekt!  ;)

Glad your husband had such a great time at his old home. But then, what was to be expected overhere, hunh??  ;D
Look what I found on the internet: Klinsi, the baker of our football-dreams!

(http://www.bild.t-online.de/BTO/sport/wm2006/fotogalerie/klinsmann-juergen-beste-bilder-020606/4813012-J_C3_BCrgen_20Klinsmann__MBHF,templateId=renderScaled,property=Bild,width=284.jpg)

Your're right. It's a bit of a letdown that it's over. I hadn't thought that I'd ever say this before it started. I couldn't have been less interested in football not so long ago. But the magical atmosphere of that tournament just got me good, I guess. I, like so many others, became a huge fan of our young team and coach Jürgen Klinsmann. They have achieved something great. Everybody is hoping that Klinsi will remain national coach, but I have my doubts. After all, he has his wife and kids in Riverton California...

So what are we gonna do now?? I guess everyday life will just strike again...

Despite his red card in the final, Zinedine Zidane was elected "Best Player" of the World Cup by journalists!   :)

I hope he is not remembered by that foul.
I hope people look beyond that mistake he made yesterday.

J'espère que Zidane sera remémoré comme l'excellent footballeur qu'il est !!  :)

Yes, he will be remembered for the moments, years, of sheer happiness and pride that he gave us and especially many youths here. :) I think deep inside we can't help thinking "he shouldn't have done it, but hell, he is only human!". And we still love him.

I am not going to argue with you.  I am not interested in accusing you of anything ..lol
All I am saying is that its easy to say "Ignore it" if someone makes a racist or nasty comment, but its not that easy.
And nope, I dont have evidence that you punch out people (that was not my point), but verbally, you dont let anything slide..do ya?  That's what I was saying.

I am not supporting what Zidane did.  I can see him losing his temper  if he was insulted ...
I am not a violent person at all, but there are times I am ready to fight with someone if they are racist or call me a name ..

I would of told the guy "to shut up" and not comment on me like that, but I do not go around physically assaulting people. I don't let anything slide and I go after people who attack me. I do not assault them. For one, you don't even know what was said. So there is your first assumption. Zidane kicked a player in the past in 1998, and was red-carded for it.

You are ready to fight someone physically if someone is a racist or calls you a name? Wow, you must have a long police record of assault, if that is the case. I keep it to words.

Remember the saying: Sticks and stones break my bones, but words never hurt me.

Cliche I know.. but applicable.

Unfortunately Zidane will be remembered for that foul. I personally wanted Del Piero as the best player in the cup.

Still no word on the excat exchange, but here is an article about the incident, probably some rumors too.
http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=ap-wcup-zidane&prov=ap&type=lgns (http://sports.yahoo.com/sow/news?slug=ap-wcup-zidane&prov=ap&type=lgns)

Here is part of that article:
Quote
...
But lashing out is nothing new to Zidane, who grew up playing on concrete in an impoverished immigrant neighborhood of Marseille, where fouls and insults are met with instant retribution.

Perhaps he could never shake off that you-or-me mentality.

"You can take the man out of the rough neighborhood, but you can't take the rough neighborhood out of the man," striker Thierry Henry said Sunday.

At this year's World Cup, where Zidane sat out one match for getting two yellow cards in the first round, he sent a message to his teammates. In a rare television interview, he said, "We die together."
...

Even with the fuol, Zidane is still widely appraised by his teammates.

Quote
Zidane's teammates had all wanted to help him to one last trophy. Failing that, they refused to kick him when he was down.

"For all that Zidane has done for the national team, you have to say 'Thank you and well done,"' said striker David Trezeguet, the only player to miss his penalty kick in the shootout.

More on Zidane: Case Closed. Materazzi admitted he insulted Zidane, but denies using a racist expletive. It's on CNN.

FIFA investigate Zidane head-butt

Tuesday, July 11, 2006 Posted: 1636 GMT (0036 HKT)

LONDON, England -- FIFA are to open a disciplinary investigation into the circumstances surrounding France captain Zinedine Zidane's head-butt on Marco Materazzi during the World Cup final.

Playing the last match of his career, the French midfielder drove his head into Materazzi's chest in the second period of extra time in Berlin after exchanging comments with the Italian.

FIFA will open a disciplinary investigation into Zidane's conduct to enable it to clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident," said FIFA in a statement.

What exactly was said between the two remains a mystery although Materazzi has denied allegations he called Zidane a "dirty terrorist".

"I used an insult that I've heard used a dozen times and which is heard all the time on the pitch," said Materazzi -- when asked whether he had insulted Zidane's sister.

"I certainly did not call him a terrorist: I'm ignorant, I don't even know exactly what an Islamic terrorist is ... I also certainly didn't say anything about Zidane's mother: for me, a mother is sacrosanct."

"Italy won the final in a penalty shootout after Zidane was sent off for the head-butt.

There was further controversy when the incident was brought to the attention of referee Horacio Elizondo by the fourth official at the match, prompting suggestions that he had used television replays.

FIFA backed the version of the fourth official, who insisted he had seen the foul as it happened. Video technology cannot be used as a basis for a refereeing decision.

"The incident was directly observed -- without the use of a monitor -- by fourth official Luis Medina Cantalejo from his position at the pitchside, who informed the referee and his assistants through the communications system," said the world body.

In an ironic touch, Zidane was later declared the outstanding player of the tournament, the winner of FIFA's Golden Ball award, in a vote decided by the media.

FIFA could not confirm how many of those votes were cast before the 34-year-old's red card. "The votes were cast into ballot boxes in the media center in Berlin that remained open until midnight on the day of the final," it said.

"It is impossible to determine how many journalists cast their votes before the match and how many during it, as the ballot papers were not counted until after the deadline for voting had expired."

Zidane has not explained his actions publicly although he is expected to later this week. Materazzi said the incident started when he grabbed Zidane by the shirt.

"He turned round, he said to me with a sneer, looking at me up and down, mockingly 'If you really want my shirt, I'll give it to you afterwards'," the Italian said.

(and I'm sure we're gonna hear some awful comment from our National Front, the French fascist/neo-nazi party, who already commented in the past on the "colour" and "origin" of our players! Starting tomorrow I'm sure).

MEA CULPA! MEA MAXIMA CULPA!! I was wrong. Even the Italian fascists beat ours! Indeed, it is Roberto Calderoli, a former Minister in the Berlusconi government, who played that dirty game. After the Italian team's victory, he declared :
"Our victory in Berlin is a victory of our identity, of a team of Lombards, Napolitans, Venetians, Calabrians, who won against a team that sacrificed its own identity by putting in line Blacks, islamists and communists in order to obtain results."  It would make me laugh, were it not so pathetically laughable!
LOL!!!   (but Materazzi PLEASE, are you such a moron as not to know what an islamist terrorist is supposed to be?? -see article above - Give us a break, man!)

Materazzi's line that he's "ignorant" of what an Islamic terrorist is sounds like it was handed to him by a publicist.  Not only do the most hateful things come out of the most ignorant people, but his very ownership of his ignorance negates that ignorance, you know what I mean?  It's too sophisticated a notion for someone who claims to be unsophisticated.

Although I heard that both deny a terrorist comment.

Oh please. You people have no idea what he said. And some lipreader is not going to tell you either, especially when lipreading only can pick up 25% of the words (and that is from close distance). What Zidane did was childish and they are considering pulling his best player award from him and giving it to the person who really deserved it, Fabio Cannavaro. Cannavaro was a better sport and is a much better player then Zidane. He's also a professional when it comes to behavior.

Materazzi is not a racist, nor is he a bigot. Jeez, people insult each other all the time on the field. I even played for an amateur football league while I was living in Argentina and it was common. I just let it go over my head, and continue playing. Headbutting someone when they say something mean to you is immature and quite unprofessional. I want Zidane to lose his best player award just for that.

http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1227435,00.html

Sky is a pretty iffy source, but I have heard this from several sources.

Isabelle is on her usual rant about bashing Materazzi, who basically equalized against France. I Think a lot of people in the French media are bitter because they know it was Materazzi who scored that equalizing goal and they see this headbutting incident, as an opportunity to use slander against him. I hope Materazzi has a good lawyer... I wonder how effective it is to sue in the EU for slander.

So many sour grapes here. I'm sorry that France lost and I'm sorry that Zidane had to resort to immaturity and violence. I guess that's a symbol of the state of affairs in France. I really don't think you guys should be directing all your anger at Materazzi, and hell I heard it was Zidane who said something first to Materazzi that was insulting. They traded words, and Zidane became a child. Your anger is misdirected and rather should be directed at ZIDANE HIMSELF!

Guys... before you bash me... understand... I had a lot of respect for Zidane and I feared him in this match. But right now... I have lost all respect for the guy. Great player or not, he's not professional.

Oh believe me I would like to, and say it if you must, I did have a vendetta against the French team because they defeated the Spanish like that. I was so mad that day. I hope that Spain improves further next year... they really should... they obviously have the talented players to do it (including Fernando Torres). I hope this cup was a learning experience for the team and they improve how they play in 2010.

I totally see what you mean, and I agree. I don't mean to guess what Materazzi said, but anyone saying they don't know what an islamic terrorist is, is just ludicrous! It sounds like a 4-year-old giving a very lame excuse for whatever.
Zidane did not repeat the exact words, but said Materazzi insulted his mother and sister in very harsh words. Apparently all because when Materazzi was tugging at his shirt, Zidane said: "You can have my shirt at the end of the match if you like". Then the insult and the head butt in response. Zidane apologized on TV last night.

Materazzi, an italian hero who appeared at the Rolling Stones concert in Milan after a tribute to the Azzurri at the end of the concert, denied saying anything about his family. And no, you don't know what Zidane said. Personally I don't think he said that. Stop relying on lip-reading because that is all we have.

I want the Best Player Award pulled from Zidane. The man is obviously quite immature and very unprofessional. He has a history of attacking members of an opposing team, like he did in Saudi Arabia in 1998.

How fitting. Quite a few people have decided to leave BetterMost for good only shortly after our very own national coach Jürgen "Klinsi" Klinsmann has decided to leave Germany. Darn it.  :'(

http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,426328,00.html (http://service.spiegel.de/cache/international/0,1518,426328,00.html):

Klinsmann Quits as German Coach

Jürgen Klinsmann has decided not to stay on as Germany's national soccer team coach, despite leading his young squad to the World Cup semi-finals. The decision will disappoint the millions of German fans who had hoped he would continue.

It will come as a hard blow after the World Cup euphoria that gripped host nation Germany: the man that lead their youthful and underdog team to a surprisingly strong showing in the tournament is calling it quits. Jürgen Klinsmann will not continue as German national coach despite overwhelming support across the country.

"I have a great wish to return to my family and my children," said Klinsmann at a press conference on Wednesday. "I feel burned out."

His assistant coach Joachim Löw, who has played a big part in Klinsmann's controversial attempt to modernize the training methods of the German Football Association (DFB), was named as his successor. "He was never an assistant - he was a partner, who had his own areas of responsibility," Klinsmann said.

The resistance to change that Klinsmann and his staff encountered prior to the World Cup could be one of the biggest reasons for his resignation. His two-year tenure was marked by frequent public criticism of the 41-year-old, who had no previous coaching experience.

Although Germany's third-place finish at the World Cup and the bold, attacking style of the national team won Klinsmann legions of fans and helped the country develop a strong sense of unity amid an outpouring of enthusiasm, it was never clear he would continue as coach after the tournament.

He lives with his family in California, which was always a point of contention with many at the DFB and others in Germany's soccer community -- as were some of his personnel and coaching decisions. Klinsmann may fear a return to infighting and backbiting once the wave of excitement generated by the World Cup rolls back.

Former German coach Berti Vogts was one of the few not to be caught up in the national glow of the team's impressive performance, which made it seem to some that Klinsmann would be encouraged to continue. "After this World Cup everything certainly seems wonderful. But I know that Jürgen Klinsmann hasn't forgotten all the things that happened to him over the past two years," Vogts told the Stuttgarter Zeitung newspaper.

From zero to hero

After Germany was thumped 4-1 by Italy in a friendly in March, an opinion poll had 60 percent of the public calling for Klinsmann to be replaced. Only months later, after a strong showing in the World Cup and only a narrow defeat by Italy in the semi-finals, fans were desperate for him to remain. Many held banners during the team's last match for third place against Portugal reading: "Klinsi Please Stay!"

"I hope that no one's heart will be broken by this," Klinsmann said. "Now let's look to the future. We'll have a lot of fun watching this team."

But the decision was also likely a disappointment to Klinsmann's youthful players, who had unanimously called for him to continue on as coach heading towards the European championships in Switzerland and Austria in two years.

"It's a shame that Klinsmann is not continuing," German captain Michael Ballack said. "I am pleased, though, that we now have a coach in Joachim Löw who knows the team and who will continue in the same style."

Speaking after Klinsmann at the same press conference on Wednesday, the new German head coach echoed his predecessor's unshakable optimism. "We are deeply convinced that we have established ourselves in the top of world football again. We have a young team that can only improve," Löw said.

I also meant to express my sadness that he's not staying to coach the German team.  He's just a pup of 41 -- what will he do next??

:( Lippi resigned... but hey I guess he got what he was seeking for his team, the Azzurri...

I'm probably a bit disappointed like German fans. Don't get me wrong I'm happy we won the cup... but Lippi was the finest coach the Azzurri ever have had.

After Brandon, Mandy, Rt and Sheyne have announced to leave...  :'(

Weird, weird, weird! It is a shame that because your great friend is leaving (rt), you feel you have to leave too (sheyne and mandy).

Look here: we've been arguing some, about damn football, and nationalities, and racism and all things important, and we're still here  :D.

The FIFA World Cup is over, but Berlin is partying on! Last weekend several hundreds of thousands of people attended the legendary Berlin Love Parade:

Haha, great pictures, Sarah!  :D

I have found some new insights concerning Zidane's headbutt...

That's how the Germans saw it:

That's how the French saw it:

That's how the Italians saw it:

That's how the Americans saw it:

And that's how it was put in Germany's biggest tabloid paper, the "Bild Zeitung":  ;D

Edit, Oct. 3rd.:
The original links have obviously been changed. Lol. Sorry, Zidane is no longer there!

Anke, this is AWESOME.  Oh man.  Ruediger was all over it and sent it to various people immediately.

My favorite is the lamp-post; his is the terrorist version.

I'm curious now.   ???

"Schwarz, Rot, Gold" = "Black, Red, Gold" = the colours of the German national flag; so they made it "Black, Red, Gay"...

The motto of the FIFA World Cup was "Die Welt zu Gast bei Freunden" which translates literally into "The World as Guest at Friends'";
That group at the parade changed it into "The World as Guest at Lesbians."  :)
