Recommended by someone on Dave Cullen. (at the end of chapter 8, I called him/her a bitch, and said may your phone wake you up in the midfdle of every night and ring forever----however), it's beautifully written, and the framework is the weirdest thing you ever saw, and I imagine there will be some good sex, eventually as well (only 9 chapters into it, so far).pATIENCE, CHILDREN.

So glad to hear from you! I'm glad you like LMtYD despite it's extreme AU-ness. (AU-ness...now that's a word). You know, I like AU, but...I could never write it. What I mean is, I could never change the story from the way it was originally, because I think it was perfect the way it was. Sure it's fun to read happy endings and all, but to me, BBM just couldn't have ended any other way. I DID want to take a stab at the happily ever after, though, but I knew that for me to do that, it would have to be completely outside of the original story. And there you go!
Thanks for coming over here! I've always wanted to talk with you more, since I've always been intrigued by your super sonic updating speed! And I still want to read you story! It sounds tasty...LOL!

I've slow down a bit actually.... and I do agree to the not being able to change any details of the BBM story itself. I just can't bring myself to do it.
As soon as you have a lull in writing then you can read... that is what I do. Lately I havent had a lot of lulls but I do read your story regularly when it updates.

Um...it's a result of my recent trip to Holland to visit June! LOL. Lamb in Dutch is lammetje, so I spent a silly time saying lammetjes brammetjes

Bear with me please, I don't write well and it's taking me a long time to write this out. I'm basically a loner, do my work, come home, have a couple of friends but more like acquantances to be honest. I have a good friend at work and she talked me into seeing Brokeback Mountain with her and from that point on my life has been in turmoil, I never had emotions so strong before even when I was married! Because of my passionless marriage I got divorced, no kids though, my ex an I remain friends. I got into the movie as an almost obsession and got a copy of the short story and I often cry after reading it. I don't know how many times I read it but I can identify with Jack and Ennis on so many levels, I feel like I'm both of them rolled into one! I knew I was different all my life but couldn't cope with not doing what other folks wanted me to do like getting married. I married Louann who I thought I loved but I didn't know at the time I really couldn't love her the way I needed to, and with a lot of soul searching, I explained to her my attraction to guys and that in all fairness to her and me I couldn't stay with her. I tried going to various gay bars and can't identify with the guys there. I don't act like them and hate the promiscuity they have. I'm discovering online meetup places but haven't found the right guy there yet but will keep on trying. My friend at work showed me Lead Me to Your Door, and all my feelings are coming to a head again, this is really unreal! I'm dying for more, and I promise you good folks to keep you posted as to what goes on with me. 'night now, Jim Twist.

I think you'll find it helpfull by getting "in" with an online community. You can talk with others that share a similar passion for Brokeback Mountain with you. Also, I'm so glad that Lead Me to Your Door has been able to touch you and has been able to bring your feelings back "to a head". It's wonderful to hear. Thanks again for sharing with us!

Jack squeezed the still glowing end of his cigarette with his thumb and forefinger until the embers were completely extinguished and then tossed the butt off to the side.
“Nope.”
“Got a lot on yer mind?”
“Yep.”
Ennis let it go at that, wouldn’t pry any farther unless Jack decided to share. They sat in comfortable silence for a few more minutes, looking up at the sky, the new moon barely visible in the darkness, the stars the only light for miles.
“Where were you in 1963?”
Jack looked over at Ennis, surprised by his question.
“What d’ya mean?”
Ennis took a puff of his cigarette and then exhaled slowly.
“I mean, where were ya, what were ya doin’?”
Jack turned forward again, rested his elbows on his knees. He thought. Hard.
“Jesus. 1963. Seems like a million years ago. Let’s see…”
Antsy, he repositioned himself again, leaned back, rested a hand on the log to either side of him, and stared up at the dark sky.
“ I was helpin’ my daddy out on the ranch when jobs were scarce. But, I guess that was maybe the second year I’d tried ta get a job somewhere away from home. I’d signed up with the Farm and Ranch Employment agency, hopin’ fer somethin’ good…”
“What happened?”
“I don’t remember.” Jack turned his head to the side, a funny grin on his face. A memory was just beyond his reach, but he couldn’t manage to touch it.
“I think the first summer I tried ta get away, we’d had a busy season at the ranch, busier than normal at least, and it turned out that my folks needed me more than I needed a job. Then the next summer, I guess…my daddy, yeah that’s right, he got hurt, fell off his horse and threw out his back, needed my help again. Shit, I thought I’d never get away.”
Jack laughed.
“I’d already been rodeoin’ when I could, locally, whenever the rodeo would come in ta town, but the next summer, I decided ta call ranchin’ quits and took up ta tourin’. Thought I was gonna be a famous bull rider or sometin’.”
He shook his head. “Got me away from Lightenin’ Flat and that’s ‘bout all I wanted.”
Ennis nodded then threw his own cigarette down.
“Why do you ask? What were you doin’ in ’63?”
“Believe it or not, I also signed up with Farm and Ranch Employment that summer. KE had jest gotten married, and I had nowhere ta go.”
Jack raised his eyebrows. “Oh really?”
“Yeah, I’d gotten a job with ‘em too. But, uh, this friend a’ KE’s also needed some help with his spread, was short handed that summer, so my brother decided ta help me out and told his buddy, name a’ Carden, that I was lookin’ fer work.”
Ennis took in a deep breath; let it out.
“Anyway, I turned down the job that F.R.E had assigned me and went to work cleanin’ up horse shit fer a summer. That November I married my ex-wife.”
Jack was silent. He wasn’t sure why Ennis had brought this up.
“Don’t ya get it?”
Jack shook his head. Ennis sighed.
“Do ya remember what job ya’d been assigned to that summer?”

Wow, this chapter hit hard, I loved Jack's reaction when he realized he and Ennis could have been together in '63, I felt that way along with him - very good writing! I also understand Ennis' hesitancy and wanting the extra week together at home to help him sort things out, it's been a rough month for him too. I love the urgency of Jack needing to get back to Eliza and Ennis' not wanting him to go but understanding the need, and also fearful for what may await Jack in Childress. Ennis giving his shirt to Jack and telling him to bring it back was heartbreaking, different that what the story Ennis would have done I'm sure. It will be very interesting to see how Ennis thinks this through while Jack is away. I love this whole story Marakesh, it hits hard right where it needs to hit, I can't wait for more!

Yes I do remember that dream, I read the whole story again last night after reading the latest chapter, you're right it is hot and at that time only a glimpse of what was yet to be. I studied that scene where you got that pic and you could see and feel the tension, Jack wanted to look but his restraint was strong, he did gulp a few times though, I don't think I coulda been that strong, I would have found some reason to look, non chalantly of course! Lol. thanks for the pic!

Hey everyone! Just got back from vacation--and what a slendid time it was for all. I just wanted to let you know, if you didn't get the message on my lj that I will be posting a short selection of drabbles as an "interlude" in LMtYD between chapters 17 and 18. They are short and mostly comical and show little snipets of things that happened during the "missing time" that Jack and Ennis spent on the mountain.

To answer your question, I would think that at these particular moments, Jack just hasn't drank as much. I kept making him drink more and more, thinking (in my own mind of course) that he was trying to "catch up" with Ennis. I don't think it's that he can actually hold his liquor better. But that's just what I think.

Ennis Del Mar had no real reason to be worried about Jack Twist. First of all, just because he went back to Texas didn’t mean he was going to get beat by some crazy redneck.
“Course it’s a possibility…”
“Shut the hell up, Del Mar.” He was talking to himself now.
The book was just fucking with him. There were a lot of similarities between it and his real life, and now it had him spooked. Especially since Jack had said that he thought someone knew about the book…knew about the book and had called him a ‘faggot’. It seemed like too much. Too much to be a coincidence, surely, but at the same time, almost didn’t seem real or possible. How closely could reality actually meet fiction? How could a stupid story follow his life? It just didn’t make sense, and Ennis figured it never would. He’d decided it was no good to puzzle over it too much; it was a waste of thinking time, and Ennis had already covered every which way it could be make sense hundreds of times.
Ennis pushed the idea of Jack’s death away—far away. That was something else that bothered him. Did he really have any right to worry about Jack Twist? He’d only known the man a couple months…he was acting like he’d known him his whole life. Jack was a man he’d met in a bar. Jack was someone he’d fucked a few times. Jack was apparently a queer man. Ennis was…

Okay, I'm going to try and answer this as applies to LMtYD.
Now certainly one shouldn't be worrying about ANYTHING after having mind blowing sex. But...well, it's been a while since the mind blowing sex took place, so doubts begin to set in. I think most of us have doubts, at least I know I DO, when it comes to relationships, and I think that it would be reasonable for Ennis to have some sort of doubt, given the type of person he is, and the trouble he has with "real" commitment, and with his insecurities. BUT, let me assure you, Ennis is not having doubts. His mind is doubting things to try and lessen or demean his feeligns towards Jack so he doesn't have to feel the same intensity of pain without him. He cannot deny it though. He knows exactly what he's doing, and knows that it isn't true--aka he knows he loves Jack and that Jack is the world to him and that he wants to be with him...if he can burn down all the bridges and actually set his mind to it.
I think this is a reasonable explanation, at least for the character in my story. Now...as to why Ennis isn't calling Jack, it could be him not wanting to sound needy, trying not to sound worried, probably trying to prove (to himself more than anyone) that there is no need to worry and that he isn't showing what society might consider a "weakness". Also...well, it certainly adds a more interesting plot don't you think??? ::ehem:: AND a realistic one.
So, I tried to answer your question. What about other author's though? What do you guys think???

Lead Me to Your Door, Chapter 20 Teaser

Jack settled back into the shadow of the booth, chuckling to himself, and re-positioned his hat low over his eyes. But just as he was feeling normal again, almost comfortable, the door to the bar swung open and in walked three men, the tall one in the middle all smiles and good nature, Polo Shirt and Khaki’s impeccably chosen (most likely by his wife): Leroy Patterson.
Jack felt his throat tighten and he sat up in the booth. There he was, and he was with two other friends.
“Well what did ya expect? The old woman even told ya he went out with a couple buddies. You act like this is shockin’ news.”
But now there were two more he had to deal with. He didn’t know what to do. He’d been set with his plan when he’d thought Leroy would be home, but now they were in a completely different situation and he was clueless. He watched them sit (they chose a table in the middle of the room), and then watched as Teeny took their order. He remained in the dark corner, frozen, as she brought out two pitchers of beer and even as they laughed and joked and drained their first pitcher.
“Get up. Get up. Get up. Do it, Jack.”
It was almost 11:30 before he stood up, legs shaking, palms sweating, breaths coming in short, sharp intakes. He shuffled towards their table, hands hanging heavy beside him, boots like they were filled with lead. He stopped short of the table, cleared his throat.
The men looked up. Leroy’s eye lit with recognition. “Jack? Jack Twist?”
Jack felt like a large roll of quarters was lodged in his throat. He took in a deep breath and wiped his palms on his jeans. “Leroy.” His voice came out tight and unfriendly. “Need ta have a word with you.”

Absolutely agree. Conflict is what makes a story. That's pretty much all there is to it. Now, there should be limits...I mean, no one (well maybe someone) wants to read melodrama...unless its written rediculously well. But the conflict does keep the ball rollin'.

There was a little moment of pause on her side of the line. “Well, actually Jack, I’m really glad you picked up.”
Jack pursed his lips out of surprise and turned on the stove. “Really? There somethin’ you want to discuss? You’re Dad’s birthday’s already passed…” Maybe she wanted early ideas for Christmas…
Alma Junior cleared her throat. “No it’s nothin’ like that, just wanted to speak with you in particular. You might want to, uh…did you say Daddy was out in the stables?”
“Yup.”
“So you’re alone?”
Jack frowned. “What are you on about now? This don't seem like you. Has somethin' bad happened?”
“Well, no, but….you may want to sit down.”
“Tell me what’s wrong.”
“Alright.” There was a shuffle and Jack assumed she was making herself comfortable or maybe walking into another room so she could have some privacy.
“Well I was on the Internet earlier today, because I was looking to order this Wiggles video for Aidan. I figured he could use something other than all those cartoons and Power Rangers he likes normally.”
Jack had to wonder where this was going, but he figured she hadn’t gotten to the point yet, and so he kept his mouth shut and listened.
“Well I got a little sidetracked by this article I found about Heath Ledger. Do you know the actor?”
Jack thought back for the name, couldn’t come up with anything. “I don’t think so.”
“He was in the Patriot and Monster’s Ball.”
“That one with Billy Bob Thorton?”
“Yeah, that’s it, he played the son.”
Jack tried to remember what he looked like. Could remember the movie though, definitely, it struck home a little for him. “That was a sad movie.”
“Yeah. Anyway, I clicked on the link because I always thought Heath Ledger was pretty handsome, even though he’s just a kid. So I was reading this article about one of Heath’s upcoming movies. He’s got a few coming out, but there was one that they mentioned that happened to catch my eye.”
Jack was a little confused. “Junior, what exactly does this have to do with anything? I mean, I hate to sound short, but I don’t see what sort of connection you’re tryin’ ta make.”
“That’s what I’m about to get to.” She took in a breath. “Oh God. I don’t even think I can say it.”
“Well, try it out, and I’ll tell you what I think.”
“That’s what I’m afraid of, but I know you and Daddy hardly ever go online. You’d never of discovered it till it was already in the theatres and they were showing previews on television.”
Jack poured the soup into the pot and pulled out another skillet for the sandwiches. “Go on, honey. I won’t be upset.”
“Jack, do you remember that book you showed me when I came down to visit a couple years back?”

Oh yeah! Very Well worth the long read! I read it to my partner during the holidays while he was driving. As I've mentioned in other posts, I think this is the best fanfic, it touched me deeply and continues to do so.

Yeah, I'm still not believing the whole Brokeback phenomenon, when my co-worker first dragged me to the movies to see it, and then finding out about LMtYD, it was like reading a book about reading a book about a portion of my life with a few twists. When I found the name Twist in print, as you can imagine it really grabbed me, nevermind mentioning the gay under current. I was fortunate like Jack in Jess's story, I got to meet and fall in love with the guy heaven intended me to have!

How lucky you are to be able to read it without marakesch's darned cliffhangers. I remember how good they were - and how frustrating sometimes. Queen of cliffs - she sure deserved that title. So be warned, this could be a verrrry long night for you ;).
LMTYD is definitely one of the best stories out there IMO.

I,ve completly given up on dreaming now. Even if it gets started up again I shant read it. Oh, as far as I'm concerned FON is completely over. I don't hope for that anymore; everything has been deleted and that's just telling enough for me. As for Dreaming, well I adored that and I tell myself I won't read it but if/when the last chapter ever comes up, I'm sure I will :D
I'm sure the author's have very good reasons for not updating, just wish they'd let us know :)

That's the frustrating thing about fanfiction, you never do know for sure if the story has an ending! :-\

I was just thinking about To Be Alone with You yesterday... I miss that one, almost more than Dreaming. I thought her Jack was incredibly intriguing and sexy, even if I was never sure if he was a good guy or not.
I really don't know what I'll do if Dreaming or FON or any of those that seem to have disappeared suddenly updated again... there are stories like Ronin, The Wolf and the Thunderbird and Light of the Towering Dark that I'll wait what seems like a month or more for an update and hop right back in when they finally appear, but I also know that they will update because I see the authors around the boards and know that those long periods in between are normal for those stories, so I just keep them somewhere in the back of my mind.
But with something like Dreaming... I don't even know where we were in the last chapter ???

Me neither!! When the last update came up I had to re-read some of the other chapters just to get into the story again. But with The Wolf and the Thunderbird I never have that. I do know a lot of people couldn't remember who Sean was though.
As for To Be Alone with You, I just really wonder how that was going to play out cause she had always said it wasn't going to have a happy end and she had me really intrigued. AND YES! Jack the pirate was incredibly sexy! ::) ;D

Just want to chip in with my agreement about leaving so long between updates. As both a reader and writer I can see it from both sides, and if other writers are anything like me then the incredible angst about not updating and letting people down can make you not want to say anything because you just feel even worse about it, instead hoping that you either get some kind of inspiration to finish or that real life gives you an opportunity to continue or even that people might just forget about the story.
I tried twice to say something on my journal about one of my stories not continuing and felt physically sick and chickened out. I even kidded myself that I was going to be able to keep going. And it was so tough when I eventually did get the courage to speak especially since there had been so so long since an update. I did say the story was on hold but even then that was keeping people's hopes up, and I feel so bad about that.
But on the other hand as a reader I DO get frustrated just not knowing what is happening, and just a little note to say "it's not happening right now, sorry" would be more than enough for me...and yet I couldn't even manage that myself so who am I to want that from others!
I think in the end we just have to accept that some stories will be written and posted quickly, some stories will take a long time and others will just stop part way through...and ultimately make our own decisions about how we read a fic, whether we take each chapter as it comes or wait till the thing is finished. I know some peopl eonly read completed works to save themselves the trauma, but hell, they must have nerves of steel!!

On the other hand there are some writers out there that are just really brilliant with their updates and will always let us know when they'll be posting or if they are going to be late with posting :)
Oh and I'm certainly NOT one of those readers that only reads completed works!!! I wouldn't be able to do that! Although reading LMTyD in one straight read was wonderful!! ;D

Yeah, I think that's the key... it's the wondering that drives me nuts. Helen, I was so happy you let us know what was going on with your story. I knew you were taking a break from it while writing modern way so I wasn't worried and felt like you had told me enough, then letting us know for sure you weren't going to work on it was really helpful. Just little things like that really make a difference for me. :-*

I've been feeling the same way. I was hesitant to start reading this because I was afraid she would stop updating like she did the pirate fic, but I couldn't stop myself and now I'm just jonesing real bad for both of them.
I loved this take on the BBM/QaF mix, so much so that I started watching QaF again after reading the first chapter. But now I'm afraid we won't see another chapter of either. :-\

And what about "Just the two of us"? that started out so well, I was really enjoying it and then nothing. I get so pissed off when people start stories and leave them. >:( Sure there might be a valid reason but all they have to do is just post one line to say no more updates for a while due to personal reasons, and then at least we,d know not to check. In future I shall only read completed stories.
