Just finished this story written in screenplay format as to how I thought and hoped the movie might end the first time I saw it.
As you can tell from the title this gives a very different ending. "SWEET LIFE AT LAST"
Starts out with scene in photo except that....

Beautiful story, JP. I really like how you used the present tense to put us right there with the men. So much else...how you rework lines from the story into this happy context, Jack's barely contained glee, the horse trailer stocked with everything (I started tearing up at that), and maybe my favorite line out of many - "each holding on so hard so the other wouldn’t feel them shake."
Added note about the trailer: It reminds me of something Annie Proulx said in "Getting Movied" - that "People may doubt that young men fall in love in love up on the snowy heights, but no one disbelieves the speckled coffeepot, and if the coffeepot is true, so is the other." To paraphrase...People may doubt that Ennis could change, but no one could doubt the authenticity of the tack, the trailer, and the truck, that are so lovingly given, and if those are true, so perhaps is the possibility of Ennis saying yes.

And I love the way you center your stories, apparently, around a THING, a postcard, a truck. Also nice that you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT, instead or just glossing over things like trucks.
Always room for hope, huh? Just a gentle hope. There are so many stories that start out "Juswt think, Hamlet is to be the new King orf Denmark!"

I love the AU you're creating for Ennis and Jack, JP, and how you showed that Jack's gift gave Ennis the chance to demonstrate his generosity of spirit.

Just read it and sent you a PM. Wanted to make a public testimony here how much I enjoyed it. I grinned from ear to ear the whole time I was reading it, it's a nice, sweet little story.
And I think you have a real gift for capturing Ennis and Jack's speech patterns, especially Ennis's.

I guess I have some thoughts of what lays ahead for our bud's. I didn't really when I wrote the first chapter, kinda leaving everything open.
Jack accepting Ennis may never change
Ennis thinking he might
If Jack met his death, soon after at least he was able to give something Ennis could really use, of course the shirts would always mean the most.
And I have read some excellent AU stories, didn't know what I coud add.
So thanks for your support and I will write as I get it squared away in my head.

I';m sure you know that the lovely photo from the Oscar Promo Book of Jack sitting on Lureen's bed with his hand on Bobby's head--isn't in the movie---nice photo, anyway. Far as I know, the other pic you posted isn't in the movie either--where did you get that one from? Really nice.

Another nice little story, Mark!
I know there are plenty of folks around who think Ennis and Jack should have put themselves together before everything, but tell you what, I like your portrayal of Ennis here, alive to their responsibilities to their children, and willing to put their children's needs ahead of their own.
And I love the attention to detail that you pay to food! Not just "salad" but "leafy salad," "marinated steak," and fried potatoes with onion--just the way my mother made them!

SWEET LIFE AT LAST
Mark that was really good! I enjoyed it very much because instead of getting a place of their own they stay with Jack's mother. After a lonely ,dull , probaly loveless life with her husband, she now has them with her to bring love and happiness into her house. i also love the fact that Ennis made it to his daughters wedding and spoke to and made peace with Alma sr.
the part that really got me was when Ennis found the shirts! Really beautiful. A welcomed switch from the original story. keep writing!!

131 MILES TO RIVERTON
Mark I just read this one and' NewYear New Hope" . I enjoyed both very much. Your love and knowledge for old automobiles sure came in handy on these, did'nt it? ;)
I thought that "131 Miles..." was a great idea because it was proably the only way Jack could of got Ennis to take the truck was by purchasing it ahead of time and then leaving him there. He could of never bought it with Ennis knowing what he was doing. I loved the fact in "New Year.." that Ennis called Jack at his work and thanked him too. And Jacks response to that when he was sitting in his office "thank you Ennis" was perfect.
And yes Mark I was wondering why you decided to put the shirts hanging on the back of the bedroom door in "Sweet Life At Last" instead of closet. I thought that it was because Jack never hid his love for Ennis..

Thanks for the post. If you remember how Jack's room was laid out the door was oppisite the window, that way when Jack was there, especially that last time when his future was uncertian, the shirts would be the first thing he saw when he awoke in the morning.
