In the BROKEBACK SF ADVENTURE thread, Meryl asked whether there would be an award for “Scrawniest Ass” at the next Brokie gathering.

That inspired me to come up with a few suggestions:

  • “Ennis Del Mar nostril-flaring”
  • “Jack Twist lip-licking”
  • 3- and 10-meter sheep carry; 25-meter sheep drag
  • Food-flinging mule chase
  • Fewest drops of whiskey spilled during rodeo dance
  • Time travel--knocking an ignoramus into: tomorrow (bronze), three days from now (silver), next week (gold)
  • Turkey carving--electric vs. manual. Points given for posture, artistry, speed.

Any others...?

ROFLMAO

How about this one?

And speaking of great threads, how about an award for Couples' Spit-Stringing?   just a thought.

The One-Hand Watch Catch bonus points for fidgeting with later

Falling into your equipment - Bonus points if done while singing

The One-Hand Keys Catch (must be smiling when attempting)

I disagree. From what I saw in San Francisco, you wouldn’t make it past the prelims.

One more bump for new ideas...

You musta missed it when that Nervous Talking Thing of mine kicked in.  Be glad.  Be very, very glad.

Now, lemme see, here...

(OK, I'm really reaching, I know.)

Hey, we need to look at these ideas again in light of our upcoming get-together at Estes Park, Colorado! Another idea that I didn't have so can't take credit is a dialogue recitation. Let's see how far we can get through the movie just saying the lines from memory! We could do this while hiking!!

Geez!  Great old thread.

I have an idea for a cooking competition (besides perhaps a cherry cake bake-off).  How about a soup and/ or cereal-porridge making competition?  The award would go to whomever created a concoction that most closely visually approximates *whatever* is in Bobby Twist's bowl at Thanksgiving.

Mmm-mmm!! :P First prize: a bowl of the substance. Second prize: two bowls of it.

cheesy potato soup

that's what i think it is. I even posted a recipe. Pierre Tremblay says it is some sort of fruit salad.

;D  I'm happy to see that my cooking contest idea has generated an interesting response!  So, maybe at the end of the competition the losers would have to eat the winner's "concoction"!  lol.

My favorite thing about the food in Bobby's bowl is that it could be open to a *huge* range of interpretation and different types of food.   I think cheesy potato soup sounds very plausible.  So does clam chowder.  But, then, also oatmeal or (as you say) some kind of ambrosia-esque fruit salad is possible too.

I think the only winning critieria should be visual.

This is an awesome thread!  More ideas:

Leaning Against a Pickup Provacatively.  Chasing Pack Mules  (extra points for creative profanity).  The Jack Rodeo Dance.  The Cassie Hair Swing.  Chilean Sheep-Dragging.

LaShawn Line Reading  (Without stumbling. Extra credit if in one breath.)
"It's a good thing that you and Lu happened along when you did, or else we'd still be stuck on the side of the road in that dern pickup. I told Randall we oughta take the car, 'course he don't ever listen to me. He wouldn't listen to me if he was goin' deaf tomorrow. I told him it takes more than chewing gum and baling wire to fix that pickup. Well, he's never been very mechanical though."
or:
"When I was right out of SMU I coulda had my pick of pretty much any job in North Dallas, so my pick was Neiman Marcus which was a disaster because, honey, where clothes is concerned, I got no resistance, I was spending more than I made, more than Randall ever will make. We come out here thinking ranching was still big hats and Marlboros, boy, were we behind the times!"
or:
"…and then I pledged Tri Delt at SMU and I sure never thought I'd end up in a pokey little place like Childress, but then I met old Randall here at an Aggie game, and he was an animal husbandry major. So we been here a month, he got the foreman job over at Roy Taylor's ranch. Like it or not, here I am!"

Canned peaches mixed into light vanilla yogurt.  I love the idea of this, but I wonder if it would be practical at the BBQ, since many of us will be coming long distances.  Maybe this one event of the competition could be played at home, with photos of "the substance" uploaded to BetterMost for judging.  Extra points could be awarded for set decoration, (purple chairs, for example).

Of all the movie's many mysteries and unanswered questions, this is the biggest. Why would a kid be eating anything like that whatseover, just as Thanksgiving dinner is being served? Especially because the conversation later turns on the issue of how important it is for him to eat the dinner his mother spent three hours making?

Or maybe she spent three hours on the ambrosia, and the normal eight to nine hours on the turkey and side dishes?

 ???

The Cassie Hair Swing.
I quite enjoy this one!

This makes me think that at "top Lureen's pick-up line" contest might be fun.  I think many of us acknowledge that the "mating call" pick up line was a stroke of genius on Lureen's part...  it would be fun to hear what BetterMostians might come up with as pick-up lines off the tops of their heads.

Once again, you and I see eye to eye, latjoreme.  I was the one who chose that as my number one question for Pierre Tremblay.  (Though I must say I'm VERY glad others had more profound questions for him.)  :)

"the substance"

I love the way it is called "the substance" Maybe we should write it in capital letters, like The Shirts  ;)

Big secret: to me it looks very familiar. Strange only because of the occasion. It looks like yogurt or curd with canned fruit (especially peeches) in it. Very commmon for breakfast, but for Thanksgiving dinner?  ???

Loved how you phrased this and I absolutely agree with you. What in hell did Ang Lee think when he filmed this scene? A few days ago I saw an interview with Heath (on the German DVD; it has 84 minutes of extras, compared to +/- 40 minutes on the English one), where he talked about Ang's microsopic attention to even the tiniest detail.
Where was Ang's attention regarding Bobby's food bowl? Or was it some misunderstood kind of comic relief?

Great question!

I remember as a kid getting so frustrated at meals that were served with such ceremony and fuss that you sat in your dang chair for what seemed like an eternity before getting to eat. (Even without a stud-duck fight, LOL)

So maybe Bobby got a little appetizer to appease him through the waiting period. (As a Southerner, my guess is that it is ambrosia, or some variation thereof)

More importantly, where was Ang's attention regarding Bobby's accent? I remember someone posting (I think it might have been Flashframe)....how do you mate a cowboy from Wyoming with a barrel riding gal from Texas and end up with a kid who sounds like he is from Scranton, Pennsylvania? I still laugh and laugh at that line...

Here's the quotation from Pierre's interview:

QUESTION #9

What the hell was Bobby eating?

PIERRE'S RESPONSE:

I heard this might be the most hotly discussed question on the board so I'll be careful to be clear...

Bobby was eating cereal with pieces of fruit in it. I think it was peach but I'm not one hundred percent sure on the fruit.

Maybe Bobby slept late, and was just finishing his breakfast.

As I've expounded before, my erudite theory on this casting is that since Jake played Billy Crystal's son in "City Slickers," they cast a kid that looked and sounded like he could be Billy Crystal's grandson as Bobby.  Only an elite group made up of cinephiles, subtle Asian directors and Brokaholics has grasped this.  ;D

And of course: wringing it out a hundred times (Ennis's shirt of course! keep your mind out of the gutter  ;D)
