Title: Through the Veil of Time
Post by: MaineWriter on June 30, 2006, 06:42:23 am
Introducing a new story, "Through the Veil of Time."

Once again, we join Jack and Ennis at the Lazy L Farm in Quanah, Texas. This story is a sequel to "A Love Born From Steel." It begins in May, 2006 and was inspired by a prompt on brokebackslash to "do anything with Jack and Ennis in the present."

Pairing: Jack and Ennis
Rating: let's just say, mature themes and language
Disclaimers: the usual
Feedback: always welcome and appreciated

Well, I found this thread.  The second chapter was great.  What a way to start the day, rested and relaxed.  Leslie, I lost the thread where David had a picture of the house.  I wanted him to paint is Prarie Rose.  Where can I find it again?

Leslie,  I found the house on the ALBFS thread. I like the house but David hasn't gotten around to painting it Prarie Rose yet.

For anyone who is interested, this is the article that Ennis "stumbled" across on the Internet.

I have to be careful what I read here. We need a way to discuss the chapters without someone stumbling into something they haven't read yet!  :)

Leslie, I was so glad to see the updates. I've only had Chapter 1 for so long that I started reading it again so I could go into 2 and 3 and remember where we were. However, I haven't even gotten through the peanut butter sandwiches on Don Wroe Day and my eyes are so full of tears that I can't even see the words, so I'm trying this instead! I love your writing. Everything is so "probable" and so sweet for the boys.

I'm going to visit a friend in Connecticut on Thursday - she hasn't seen the movie yet (?!?!) so I'm taking the DVD and DVD player with me. I haven't watched it in a while because I was just tired of being sad, but I've been wondering if I'm going to feel even sadder now that the fan fics have laid it all out there and shown what a sweet life they really could have had. The loss may seem even more tragic this time around.  :'(

Anyway, I'm going back to your story and see if I can do any better. I'm looking forward to discussing it with everyone if I could just get through it!  :-*

Well well Leslie, I almost fell off my chair laughing when I read what's on Ennis' mind.

I should know that you will work that idea into your story eventually.  It's too good to let it pass, isn't it?  I think Ennis did a very good job in getting Jack on board.  ;)  Thanks for the nice reading.  It's always fun to read how Ennis articulates what's on his mind.

Two really nice chapters, Leslie. I'm having a hard time thinking of them as 63 years old! Together 30 years! OMG! They really pulled it off!

For some reason I find it weirder to hear Ennis talk about Star Wars than I do nipple piercin's.  :)

"...pushing in smoothly and efficiently, like a hand into a glove." What a nice phrase.

I love all their little looks - no words needed.

I kind of had a split second of "oh oh" when the visit to the doctor was mentioned. Hope this sweet life isn't all going to go awry. You wouldn't do that, would you?  :-\

I,ve thought about that too, and I should imagine, that at some point in the story, probably nearer the end,(I hope) one of them will inevitably die. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(  I would imagine that for a couple as devoted to each other as Jack and Ennis, that would be something akin to loosing a part of yourself, because lets face it, whoever does die first, the other one will surely die of a broken heart...  One just cannot live without the other. :'( :'( :'( :'( :'( :'(
Then of course I could be totally wrong and the last chapter will have them sitting on their porch in their rocking chairs smoking a cigar and sharing a bud as the sun goes down. ;) ;)

I really hope that Ennis' overly confident attitude about his health doesn't bite him in the ass. But he really has done a great job of taking care of himself - staying active, stopping the smoking when they realized that it really was bad for them, they eat pretty good (no junk food), he's not overweight, not promiscuous, not a lot of stress, pheromones running rampant (is that the right word, pheromones?) which is supposed to be a good thing...

I'm trying to build a case, here, bargaining for Ennis to get a good report from all the tests!  ;)

Although he does have a fondness for potato chips, in the junk department, and has a bit of a sweet tooth.

Way to go, Leslie! Another delightful chapter has been added to the LazyLFarm saga.

I love it when the guys reminisce. To see them after thirty years together brings joy to the heart. Their gentle back and forth speaks of a good relationship that makes each more than he would be alone. Ennis teased Jack - and us - with his chest condition, and Jack got him back, promising to relieve the pressure. On further reflection, I think Jack may increase rather than relieve pressure by playing with this new piece of jewelry.

SPOILERS

This was a very nice chapter, Leslie. It made me cry!! I loved that Ennis talked about his own depression, the one he had when Jack showed up ready to kill himself, before they decided to live the sweet life. As you said, it must've been hard for Ennis too, because Ennis is a very sensible man, and he was also going through a lot. The scene and the conversation seemed very real. Thank you! I'm looking forward to reading more chapters.

Thanks for this delightful update, Leslie!

I love the new tagline.  ;)

I also noted a sign of cross-pollination: Ennis has zero interest in sleeping on the ground. That's a felicitous expression I've seen (and used) elsewhere - especially in chat.

“And I woulda been fuckin’ miserable. Ennis, why are we havin’ this fuckin’ conversation, anyway? My life is with you. That’s the life I want. That’s the life I got. I don’t want t’change anythin’.”

Exactly.

Very well written, Leslie.  I'm glad we got a little comic relief at the end, thinking about Jack, thinking about Ennis, on a ladder, painting the house, in his shorts.

Great chapter, Leslie.  Their convwersation is so natural and intimate and unguarded as two people who have been happily together for thirty years wuld be.  Now remember they are still young, 63 is not that old from a vantage point of 80!  I ws still frisky way back then.

It is interesting to hear Jack and Ennis talk about movie-Jack and movie-Ennis..lol..

I agree with scudder that their conversations flow with such ease and intimacy, very heart warming!

Hi Everyone,

I heard from Leslie (MaineWriter) that there were lots of requests for my Porcupines recipe. Wow! This is just everyday food for Ennis and me, but if you folks want to make 'em, have at it. It is basically the recipe from the Joy of Cooking with a few "twists" I have added over the years. Enjoy!

Jack's Porcupines

loved by Junior, detested by Jenny, tolerated by Ennis because he ain't a cook

Mix together:

1 lb. ground beef
1/2 cup bread crumbs (I like the Italian seasoned, by Progresso)
1/2 cup uncooked white rice (not the quick cooking kind or instant)
1 egg
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon paprika
optional: 2 tablespoons chopped green peppers

note: Ennis isn't real fond of green peppers, so I usually substitute 2 tablespoons chopped onion. I also add a clove or two of crushed garlic, which wasn't in the original recipe.

Using your hands, make medium size meatballs.

To cook, you have a few choices. I usually place the meatballs in a shallow baking dish. Pour a jar (15 1/2 oz) of spaghetti sauce (I like Barilla) over the meatballs. Cover and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Uncover and cook for an additional 10 minutes or so. Sometimes I'll sprinkle cheese on top for this last 10 minutes of baking. They have packages of grated cheese in the store. I like the "Italian Cheese Blend" myself. Works well for this recipe.

Alternatively, you can brown the meatballs in a skillet, then pour the spaghetti sauce over, cover and simmer until done--about 30 minutes. This adds the extra step of browning which I think is a pain in the ass. You can also just cook them in the skillet with the sauce, no browning first, but then they look a little pale, I think.

I usually serve with a tossed salad and garlic bread.

Makes enough to serve 4, or for the 2 of us, we always have leftovers.

Hope y'all like this.

Jeff -

From what I've read about Ennis' reaction, I don't think Jack still has the recipe, because it he did, Ennis would have shredded and thrown it out!

Jack -

I can't believe this, but I've been makin porcupines for years!  This must be a "gay thing!"   ;)

However, since I live in California and not Texas or Wyoming, I've modified the recipe so that it is more "heart healthy."  :)  I substitute 1 lb. ground turkey for the ground beef (although I know you may not want to do this since I know you have bad associations with turkey). I use egg substitute instead of the egg. Sometimes I use brown rice instead of white rice, but then the porcupines need to be cooked a little longer.  I do like your idea about the garlic and will have to try it!

I also like your idea about baking them.  I've been cooking em on top of the stove in a big saucepan, but unless I stir things up quite often, they burn on the bottom - worse than Ennis' bacon!   ;)

I use a simple spaghetti sauce and do not add cheese, again to be "heart healthy" (I want me and my pardnr to live to be 100!)

They do go well with tossed salad and bread.  Also good with cooked cabbage, unless you or your pardnr have problems with gas.  ;)

We also have leftovers.  They are good sliced (easy to do after bein refrigerated) and put in sandwiches . . . mmmmmm!   :)

Pete and Jeff,

Thanks for the comments. I am new to this bulletin board thing, it is sorta fun!

Jeff, Ennis made me swear on a stack of bibles that I would never make Crab Mongol again. All I remember is that it had a can of tomato soup, a can of pea soup and a can of crab. Maybe some worcestershire sauce? I served it on rice and Ennis spit it out at the table. That from a man who things fried spam sandwiches are a delicacy!

Pete, thanks for the variations. Turkey is good, I've actually done that. What bad associations have I had with turkey?? And heart healthy, yeah, I know that is something I should worry about but Ennis loves real eggs and I just can't bring myself to use that substitute. Try as I might...

Cabbage, hm, interesting. Ain't ever tried that.

If any of you guys are into dropping hints, the 75th anniversary edition of The Joy of Cooking will be published this year. Might make a good Christmas present for a certain blue-eyed, black haired (well, gray now) cowboy y'all know who lives in Quanah, TX...pass that message along to Ennis, willya?

Your pal,

Jack

That was a maybe too subtle reference to a certain Thanksgivin dinner when a certain party was so rude and obnoxious that you had to threaten to kick his sorry ass into next week - or have you purposely forgotten?

Pete,

You need to remember, there are two versions of the story: the Annie P. version (and the movie) and the TRUE story, which MaineWriter wrote up in ALBFS (and is continuing in the sequel).

The things that happened in the movie/story after the divorce postcard visit never happened in real life. So, neither of us never had those horrible Thanksgivings, I never met Randall and Ennis never met Cassie.

And because of that, I like turkey just fine!

Best,

Crab Mongol! That's what it was! Can't remember for shit these days. Sounds pretty good to me. Thanks, friend!

Ain't nothin' the matter with fried Spam. It's just pork shoulder and ham. Melt a little cheese on it, use some nice whole-wheat bread--you got you some good eatin'!

Oh Jeff...believe or not, I did not rip out the page from the cookbook (I should have) but because you are such a true die hard fan and love the story so much, I give you this:

Joy of Cooking says, "For a perfect luncheon or supper, serve with rice and a salad." Yeah right. Those cookbook authors must be on drugs.

Here it is, in all its awfulness glory.

CRAB MONGOL

4 servings

Combine and heat in a double boiler, over, not in boiling water:

1 can tomato soup
1 can pea soup
1 cup cream
1 cup canned crab (or may substitute lobster meat)

When hot, serve over boiled rice. Garnish with parsley.

Trust me, guaranteed to make your lover go "Blech!"

Getting Ennis to sign on here? Hmm, I don't think so. He is too busy googling the WWW for articles on intimate piercings and gay cowboys. What can I say, he's a wild man but I love 'im to pieces. Always have and always will.

Leslie, thank you for that update.
i love the banter between Jack and Ennis about the painting and the cooking, very sweet actually.
I guess Jack is right, Ennis shouldn't make any hasty decisions he might regret later. Although i can understand that Ennis doesn't want to deal with someone condemning the way he lives and loves, not at this stage in his life. I think he feels he's had enough of that.
His sister sounds very nice though. looking forward to the party already!

Okay .. here goes ..  :D

Spicy Beef and Bean Chili Recipe

    *  2 medium onions, chopped
    * 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
    * 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
    * 1/2 to 1 hot chile pepper - jalapeno, serrano, or habanero, seeded and minced
    * 1 teaspoon ground cumin
    * 1/3 cup pure mild chili powder
    * 3 pounds coarsely ground beef
    * 1 teaspoons dried Mexican oregano or Italian leaf oregano
    * 1/2 teaspoon salt
    * 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes with juice, or chili style tomatoes
    * 2 cups beef broth
    * 1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne
    * 1 cup (15 ounces) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
    * 3 to 4 tablespoons tequila
    * shredded Cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese, optional
    * sour cream, optional
    * canned nacho-sliced jalapeno peppers, optional

PREPARATION:
In a large Dutch oven or kettle, cook the onions in the oil, covered, over medium heat. Uncover and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden, but not browned, about 5 minutes longer.

Add the garlic, minced chile peppers, and ground cumin. Cook, stirring often, for about 2 minutes. Add the chili powder and cook, stirring constantly, for 1 minutes.

Add the ground beef, oregano, and salt. Cook, stirring often, until the meats are no longer pink, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the crushed tomatoes, stock, cayenne, and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer, with cover slightly ajar, for about 1 1/2 hours.

Add the beans, crushing some of them against the side of the pot to help thicken the chili. Add the tequila and season with additional salt and cayenne to taste. Simmer, uncovered, for 10 to 15 minutes longer.

Good or better when reheated and freezes well for up to 3 months, though it may need an extra dash of cayenne before serving.
Serves 8.
Top each serving with shredded cheese, a teaspoon of sour cream, and jalapeno pepper slices, if desired.

A Dutch oven is a big heavy pot, usually cast iron, with a lid. It can be used either on top of the stove or in the oven. Le Creuset (French?) has a very nice Dutch oven. Expensive, though...

Yes, now they each have two rings: the original "lover's braid" from the craft fair, which they have worn on their right ring fingers for 30 years, and now the new ring, "eternal knot" which they are wearing on the more traditional left ring finger.

Anyone want to play with me? I need some thoughts on what Scott looks like.

Now that we know he is going to show up at the party, I need to pin down in my mind what he looks like and how Jack and Ennis wil react to him. Is he drop dead gorgeous? Attractive but nothing special? Nerdy engineer type? Freaking adorable? Cute? A big tall drink of water? All of these have passed through my mind at one time or another. Billy (who I realized I haven't described much at all) is about 5'11", trim, in good shape (from working on the farm), brown hair, brown eyes. He falls into the category of "attractive, but nothing special" but of course, Scott thinks he's perfect. One of Billy's best features is that he has an engaging smile. He also looks young, younger than his 28 years, which is why people think of him as a "kid," still.

Thoughts are welcome. The party is shaping up and you all are invited!

Oh, Paul, you gorgeous thing...

Having gone to college down the hill from RPI, I dated my fair share of nerdy engineer types so I have some memories to draw upon. One guy was 6'10" .... maybe Scott will be that tall. Can't you picture Ennis looking up at that? LOL. And he was a "drink of water," too.

Hey Leslie,

I like it: a 6'10" Scott, quiet but modern, sexy, glasses, pocket-protector.  Someone for Ennis to literally look up to.  Maybe he could be more "out" and comfortable with himself, represent the present/future.

How about Scott being a "nerdy engineer type"?  Especially since he'goes to Tech.
Hey, those nerds can be pretty sexy.

After all, we can't all be "gorgeous things". ;)

I'm loving this.  how cute is that darlin little picture of jake, nodding off ...aww, dontca just luv it.....

I wish I had "Aging" software, we could age J&E gracefully and do some cool fanart for them ..  ;)

I hope this doesn't blow up on them--I believe Jack is right, they have to do this, and will never prove that they are normal if KE doesn't see it first hand, so he can really realize they are just like everyone else.   I am not sure what he actually thinks queers are--but it is going to be awkward no matter what.   But they can handle anything for a few days, and it is the right thing to do---even if it may turn out alittle difficult till everyone figures out what normal is.
Must admit though, my stomach is churning alittle wondering what is going to happen with them.

SPOILER

Ahhhh… I love that picture. Sweet!

So, twisted old KE might be starting to give up on some of his hate. I loved the way Jack suggested this to Ennis. They have the good life, they’re successful and have loving children and grandchildren around them. KE is old and embittered and alone. Guess it didn’t help his bitterness to see that Ennis has all the things that KE doesn’t.

I don’t think for one moment that KE is going to have some sort of epiphany and suddenly be all acceptance and sweetness and light, but I do think that the party might help him to come round a little. He may make his peace with Ennis before he dies.

I’m sure that there is more rough territory ahead though, especially if KE heard the boys nocturnal activities.  ;D

Knowing the circumstances is one thing, hearing the lads in the throes of passion is quite another.

We don’t mind of course…  ;) ;D

It,s a lovely picture it really is BUT, and I,m NOT criticising Lucise I,m really not, but I think it would be better if had Jack and Ennis in it as well. After all the story is about them. Please dont think this is a criticism it,s honestly not. I,ts a beautiful picture, I just think it needs Jack and Ennis in it. Maybe sitting on the porch?

Hey Leslie .. let's look at it from another angle.  :)

We could have a younger (transparent) version of J&E's faces outside the window .. We would be looking out of the veil into their past, their youth.  I can't describe it well, but I can see it in my mind .. I'll post it here when I do it .. could be tonight!  :)

I was reading Chapter 14: Eternal Knot in bed this morning, and I wanted to see J&E's wedding rings ..
This is a Silver Celtic Eternal Knot ring .. in a black velvet box ...

Ennis opened the box and took out one of the rings, then lifted Jack’s left hand. He smiled as he pushed the ring onto Jack’s fourth finger. “I, Ennis, take you Jack, ta be my husband, ta have and ta hold, for better or worse, in sickness and in health,” he paused, glancing over at the open prayer book next to him, then turned back to Jack, still smiling, “for richer or poorer, and I promise to be faithful ta ya til death do us part.” He held Jack’s hand for a minute, looking at the ring, then looking at Jack.

Jack turned the ring on his finger and looked at Ennis. “You ain’t ever called me yer husband before,” he said softly.

“And I prob’ly ain’t gonna start announcin’ it ta the world,” replied Ennis. “But that’s what ya are. That’s how I think ‘bout ya.”

Jack smiled at him, then looked over at the prayer book. “My turn,” he said, taking the ring and Ennis’s left hand. “I, Jack, take you Ennis, ta be my lovin’ husband, ta have and ta hold, for better or worse, in sickness and in health, for richer or poorer. I promise ta be faithful ta ya til death do us part.”

The ring settled in at the base of Ennis’s finger, looking as comfortable and natural as if he had been wearing it forever. He lifted his eyes to Jack’s. “Do I get ta kiss the groom?” he said.

Lovely and romantic!  :)

Yes, but Billy has just told Scott about his father's reaction when he came out to them, hence the slightly long faces you see in the pic!  ;D

Lucise's cover is one of the most beautiful things I ever saw. It's gong to...somewhere else...soon. I don't know why; I like it even better than my avitvar.

I posted a large version on picture caps ("Some things are too beautiful to wait for. This is Lucise's (approved) cover fro Leslie Nicoll's "Through the Veil of Time")

And I sent one to Miriam, the German girl with almost no English--she has sent me so many beautiful pictures--explaining as simply as possible what it was. (that's "libertyangel")

AND I sent one to Sid Melucci, from Dave Cullen. He's my best friend.

Er...maybe I should have asked permission? I figured, if Lucise didn't want it copied, there would have been a security on it...I guess I still should have asked permission.

This is one Miriam sent me. Or two, if I can get them both in

Oh, the ring is lovely, too, I have two round Celtic things==a pendant and a pin. (Don't have 'em scanned).

I am glad you love the cover and I am sure Lucise will be thrilled, too.

I think it is fine to post other places, as long as you let us know where (so we can go look, of course!). Where is picture caps?

I think is Sid is terrific, too.

Lucise and Leslie: Scroll down to "I love the lighter side" (bottom of things under "Brokeback Forums", ansd click on "Photocaps--Beware! Irreverent!"  It's on the last page---72. I couldn't post it full sized--but the two I sent in e-mails get the full treatment. I wouldn't be surprised if it showed up on Dave Cullen, since Sid is a honcho there. You can write "libertyangel" (the German girl) and ask her how she likd it. Hey--just sent it to Jess (marakeshsparrow) too..

I'm SO glad you ain't mad---one of the other artists got angry when I goniffed a cover.

Leslie, I left you a comment on your LJ.
Fantastic chapter.  Very emotional talk between KE and Ennis.
KE knows his days are numbered, and he wants to set things right.
Ennis really trying himself to bridge that big gap.
I LOVED the beakfast scene.  The whole family there.  Jack and
Ennis' family.  Major awwwwww  came out of my mouth at the end
of the chapter.

Thanks Paul, glad to know I am a scream and this sits right. Someone else commented (somewhere else) that there was too much lesbian sex. To that I can only scratch my head and say, Huh?

L

umm, has there been any lesbian sex?

if so - point me to the chapter, cause i missed it.

I guess for some people, a kiss, a caress and an 'I love you' counts as sex. Maybe?

MaineWriter apologizes for being behind with the story. She tells us that it is hard to write about July 4th in the middle of all the Christmas hubbub. I can understand that. Meanwhile....

Merry Christmas Eve, everybody!

Ennis and I have wonderful news!

Christian Hibbard Del Mar was born this morning at 5:03 am. He weighs 8 lbs 6 oz and seems to be perfect in every way. Kelly went into labor yesterday in the late afternoon. Kelly and Jenny stayed at home til about midnight when her water broke and then it was time to head to the hospital.

Everything went smoothly, no problems at all. Both mothers are doing great. They are hoping to come home tomorrow.

Ennis and I couldn't be happier...

Hugs to all,

Jack

Jack,
this is just wonderful news! A christmas baby!

Congratulations to Jenny and Kelly and to the proud grandfathers  :-*  :-*  :-*

Tell Mainwriter not to worry about the story. Things can get pretty hectic around this time of year. I'm sure we'll hear about that chili cooking contest soon enough.

Merry Christmas!

Hey, please pester...I need it!

Seriously, yesterday I did this MASSIVE cleaning of my office. Threw away a ton of paper, old journals, articles, files...even books! And it is hard for me to part with books! I felt like it helped me to clean my brain of a bunch of post-holiday clutter and other stuff. I need to get focused on my story and believe me, I think about it every day. My style is to create in my head, then sit down and write everything out.

Trust me...it is coming. I promise!

Hi, Leslie -

I wanted to jump in with a few thoughts before I get too far in the story, which I am enjoying so very much!  To think of Jack and Ennis - right now! - living such a wonderful life at the Lazy L makes me so happy.

Chapter 1 - Ennis on a cell phone!!!  Priceless.  And how I love mention of all their special days - what great milestones - especially Don Wroe Day and peanut butter!   ;D

I love you, Jack. It’s that simple.”

Big happy sigh. I've been meaning to tell you how much I love your banner - and guess now is a good time - I love your banner!   :)

Chapter 2 has to be one of most beautiful chapters I've read - not just in your story - but in any story! You didn't tell us - you showed us - what making love is between two people who know each other so intimately and have such a deep, all-consuming love and passion that only grows stronger with time.

Chapter 3 -

“I pushed the button,” said Ennis.

Love the marital shorthand!  - and their entire early morning talk.  I'm impressed with all the homework you must have done about the history of the Lazy L and its designation as a Century Farm.  You know me - can't get enough of all the bits of minutia that I find so fascinating!  Ennis surprised me about the piercing - but in a good way! It certainly is a compliment to your writing that your readers react so strongly to your story and the characters they love so much!

Chapter 4 - How great to see Bobby again! Ennis lecturing the doctor!  God, that was great -

Ennis bristled a bit at this comment. He looked at Josh. “Doc, I’m noticin’ yer wearin’ a weddin’ ring, I’m assumin’ yer married.”

Josh nodded yes.

“How would you like it if I asked if yer wife was stepping out on you, out a the blue like that?”

I was glad Ennis made that point, as that was exactly what I was thinking!

Chapter 5 - "Ennis's Chest Condition" - you and Ennis are evil, Leslie!     Had me getting a little panicky there - along with Poor Jack!    I am glad they discussed that post-divorce postcard.   And Jack finds the piercing sexy - I had a feeling he would!   ;D

I'll try to comment more in the next few days!  Thanks again!

Marie

Leslie you know how much i love reading your writing...I've been patiently waiting, but checking everyday for an update which i know is coming.  Thank you so much for giving life to Ennis and Jack in their elder years..its absolutely beautiful.  I'm not very good with feedback.  I just love your your story sweetie; its warm and fuzzy.  Ennis especially deserves more then the heartbreak of a Jack's death (murder IMHO) and the lonely life ahead of Ennis in BBM.  I enjoy reading Through the Veil of Time because Jack is alive and well and they are together.  Please dont get me wrong Brokeback Mountain is my all time favorite film of all time just the way it is, but fan fic like yours is wonderful to read.

Here's a treat for everyone. As the party unfolds, each of the chili chefs' special concoctions will be revealed. As the archivist for the Lazy L, I am fortunate to have access to the recipes, so I will be posting them here. So far, we know about four:

Jack's Cincinnati Style Chili (from his original Joy of Cooking recipe)
Cecelia's Wyoming Hotness
Lureen's White Chicken Chili
Chrissie and Luke's Super Easy Babysitting Chili

Once we have the whole list, I will put up a poll. After all, Ennis and KE decided that the chef who would receive the trophy would be the "People's Choice" award. I think all of you are the best people to vote!

Recipes follow in subsequent posts.

Jack’s Cincinnati Style Chili (modified from his old Joy of Cooking recipe)

3 onions, chopped
6 garlic cloves, minced
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
4 pounds ground beef chuck
1/3 cup chili powder
2 tablespoons sweet paprika
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1 teaspoon dried oregano, crumbled
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon ground mace
1 bay leaf
3 cups water
a 16-ounce can tomato sauce
2 tablespoons wine vinegar
2 tablespoons molasses

spaghetti, kidney beans, chopped onion, grated Cheddar, and oyster crackers as traditional accompaniments if desired

In a large heavy kettle cook the onions and the garlic in the oil over moderate heat, stirring, until the onions are softened, add the beef, and cook the mixture, stirring and breaking up the lumps, until the beef is no longer pink. Add the chili powder, the paprika, the cumin, the coriander, the allspice, the oregano, the cayenne, the cinnamon, the cloves, and the mace and cook the mixture, stirring, for 1 minute. Add the bay leaf, the water, the tomato sauce, the vinegar, and the molasses and simmer the mixture, uncovered, stirring occasionally and adding more water if necessary to keep the beef barely covered, for 2 hours, or until it is thickened but soupy enough to be ladled. Discard the bay leaf and season the chili with salt and pepper. The chili may be frozen or made 4 days in advance, cooled, uncovered, and kept covered and chilled. Serve the chili as is or in the traditional Cincinnati "five-way" style: Ladle the chili over the spaghetti and top it with the beans, the onion, the Cheddar, and the oyster crackers.

Makes about 8 cups, serving 6.

Cecelia Del Mar Underwood’s Wyoming Hotness

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/2 cup chopped onion
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 pound ground pork
1 pound ground chuck
one 14 1/2-ounce can beef broth
one 28-ounce can whole peeled tomatoes, drained
2 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
1/3 cup raisins
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup pimiento-stuffed green olives, halved
1/4 cup slivered blanched almonds
2 cups cooked black beans
2 cups cooked white rice

Heat the vegetable oil in a Dutch oven. Stir in the onion and garlic and cook until soft. Add the pork and beef, and cook until browned. Drain off the excess fat.

Add the beef broth and tomatoes, squashing each tomato by hand before adding it. Stir in the vinegar, raisins, spices, and salt. Bring to a boil; reduce the heat and cook 30 minutes, partially covered. Uncover and cook for 30 minutes more. Add the olives and almonds and cook an additional 5 minutes.

To serve, place a mound of beans and a mound of rice in each bowl. Ladle the chili on top.

Serves 4 to 6.

Lureen’s White Chicken Chili

1/2 pound dried navy beans, picked over
1 large onion, chopped
1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 cup chicken broth
2 cups half-and-half
1 teaspoon Tabasco, or to taste
1 1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon salt, or to taste
1/2 teaspoon white pepper, or to taste
two 4-ounce cans whole mild green chilies, drained and chopped
5 boneless skinless chicken breast halves (about 2 pounds), cooked and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 1/2 cups grated Monterey Jack (about 6 ounces)
1/2 cup sour cream
Garnish: fresh coriander sprigs
Accompaniment: tomato salsa

In a large kettle soak beans in cold water to cover by 2 inches overnight. Drain beans in a colander and return to kettle with cold water to cover by 2 inches. Cook beans at a bare simmer until tender, about 1 hour, and drain in colander.
In a skillet cook onion in 2 tablespoons butter over moderate heat until softened.
In a 6- to 8-quart heavy kettle melt remaining 6 tablespoons butter over moderately low heat and whisk in flour. Cook roux, whisking constantly, 3 minutes. Stir in onion and gradually add broth and half-and-half, whisking constantly. Bring mixture to a boil and simmer, stirring occasionally, 5 minutes, or until thickened. Stir in Tabasco, chili powder, cumin, salt, and white pepper. Add beans, chilies, chicken, and Monterey Jack and cook mixture over moderately low heat, stirring, 20 minutes. Stir sour cream into chili.
Garnish chili with coriander and serve with salsa.

Serves 4 to 6.

Hi Leslie -

I hopped over here to tell you that I was all caught up - yay! - and then I noticed you just posted Chapter 27!  What a nice "surprise!"

Thank you so much for this story!  I'm so happy you decided to continue the story in the present day.  I couldn't possibly pick a favorite chapter - they were all may favorites in their own way.  But I will say that I've had a little ache in my heart throughout the story thinking of the estrangement between Jenny and Alma, especially thinking about what progress Ennis had made in a civil, sometimes even cordial, relationship with her.  I was so happy to read "Mending Fences"  - what a beautiful, beautiful chapter that was.  Your approach to Ennis's tentative reconciliation with K.E. was so real - you didn't try to sugarcoat anything - but that sense of reality is exactly what made it so uplifting and such a joy to read.

And thank you for making your Alma such a true-to-life person.  I am anxious to hear Jenny's phone conversation with her - and how they both handle it!  I can't stand the thought of a mother cutting her child from her life - it breaks my heart for everyone involved.  But where there's life, there's hope.  Ennis has to be so very proud of Jenny for taking that first step.

As for corny and schmoopy - hey, anything involving grandchildren and grandparents has to be corny - it's in the rulebook!     And I did love it - every corny word of that poem!   And every word of the chapter!

The good news is I'm all caught up!  The bad news is - now there is one more person to pester you for new chapters!

Thanks so much - Marie

Oh - I see you've just posted recipes!  Yay!  Always looking for new chili recipes! You may have inspried me to have a chili cook-off of my own!

I love Cincinnati style chili, don't get to eat it very often. When I first tasted it years ago, the spices took a bit of getting used to.

Very nice chapter - I just read it and left a comment.

I read somewhere that cinnamon in Cincinnati-style chili identifies it as having Greek origins. Interesting...

Three more chili recipes were introduced in this chapter: Kelly's Two Bean Spicy Vegetarian Chili; Scott's Red, White, and Black Bean Chili with Sausage; and Bad-ass Bruce and Paul, The Chili King's Prize Winnin' Bowl a Red.

Kelly’s Two Bean Spicy Vegetarian Chili

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 carrots, peeled, thinly sliced
1 red bell pepper, seeded, chopped
3 large jalapeño chilies, seeded, minced (about 4 1/2 tablespoons)
1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes with added puree
3 cups water
2 15-ounce cans black beans, rinsed, drained
2 15-ounce cans kidney beans, rinsed, drained
1/2 cup bulgur*
2 tablespoons white wine vinegar
5 garlic cloves, minced
2 tablespoons chili powder
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 teaspoons ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion, carrots, red bell pepper, and jalapeños and sauté until onion and carrots are almost tender, about 8 minutes. Add tomatoes, 3 cups water, beans, bulgur, white wine vinegar, garlic, and spices. Bring to boil. Reduce heat to medium-high and cook, uncovered, until bulgur is tender and mixture thickens, stirring often, about 20 minutes. Ladle chili into bowls and serve.

* Also called cracked wheat; available at natural foods stores and supermarkets.

Serves 6

Scott’s Red, White, and Black Bean Chili with Sausage

1 tablespoon olive oil
1 1/4 pounds Italian sausages (turkey or pork)
1 large onion, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 large red bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 large green bell pepper, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
2 jalapeño chilies, seeded, chopped
1 tablespoon plus 2 teaspoons chili powder
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 1/2 28-ounce cans crushed tomatoes in puree
1 15 1/4-ounce kidney beans, drained, rinsed
1 15-ounce can cannellini (white kidney beans), drained, rinsed
1 15- to 16-ounce can black beans, drained, rinsed
1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar
Sour cream
Chopped fresh cilantro

Heat olive oil in heavy large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add Italian sausages and brown on all sides, turning occasionally, about 8 minutes. Transfer sausage to plate. Add chopped onion to pan and sauté 5 minutes. Add chopped bell peppers and chilies and sauté 1 minute. Add chili powder and cumin and stir until aromatic, about 30 seconds. Add crushed tomatoes and beans. Simmer 15 minutes to blend flavors. Cut sausage into 1/2-inch pieces. Add to chili and simmer until cooked through, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. Mix in vinegar. Season chili to taste with salt and pepper. (Can be prepared 2 day ahead. Cool and refrigerate. Before serving, rewarm over medium heat.)
Spoon chili into bowls. Top with sour cream and cilantro and serve.

Bad-ass Bruce and The Chili King’s Prize Winnin’ Bowl a Red

Vegetable shortening, such as Crisco, for browning the meat

1 8 oz can tomato sauce
2 pitted dry-pack prunes
Water if required

Spice mixture #1

1 Tbsp paprika
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
2 tsps beef granules
1 tsp chicken granules
½ tsp salt
1 Tbsp chili powder

Spice mixture #2

2 tsps cumin
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp black pepper
½ tsp salt
4 Tbsp chili powder

Spice mixture #3

1 Tbsp chili powder
1 tsp cumin

Looks like I've got great timing today - a new chapter to welcome me home!  LOL!  Wow, Leslie - what is that three in one week?

That was so great!  I never saw that coming - Bad-ass Bruce and the Chili King!  Love it!

And Kelly is so loving and supportive - what a great couple - I'm so glad she'll be by Jenny's side when they go to Riverton.  Very curious to see how that plays out - I'm cautiously optimistic, too!

Anxious to get to know Scott a little better, also!

Great fun, Leslie! And thanks for more chili recipes - can't ever have too many!

Thanks - Marie

You've posted two new chapters!  :o How could I have missed this?

Great to read, great conversation between KE and Lureen. And Ennis embarrassed about the grandchildren's surprise gift. Hahaha, very nice!

I like the goings on at the party, feels like I'm there too, in sunny Texas, I can smell the chili...

The arrival of the unexpected guests was very interesting. Looking forward to more interactions between them and Ennis and Jack.

Yes - you may be spoiling us - but we LOVE being spoiled like this!   :)

Leslie, I am sitting here with a great big goofy grin on my face!

No wonder you love this chapter - I can't imagine anyone not absolutely loving it!  The truck - and Jack posing against it - the postcards - Ennis and his pent-up yearnin'.  Sigh.  I couldn't love Jack and Ennis - or this story - more!

Thanks for the great start to my day!

Spoil me some more!! How about tomorrow morning? or better yet, tonight?

Like all marrieds and in love for 30+ years, they know each other and do those little things that only make them love each other even more.  The re-enactment of the scene in Signal was perfect, only this time Ennis didn't put his head down and mumble...he wanted to skip over several weeks and go straight to the FNIT!  And the framed postcards...Priceless.

It just keeps getting better.

It,s just so lovely to know that after all these years, they are even more in love with each other than ever and so in tune with each other too. Theres nothing they dont know about each other, and nothing they wouldnt do for each other. I,m not ashamed to say that at times, reading this and ALBFS I,ve had tears in my eyes. Thank you Leslie. Your stories are just the best. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The moment in chapter one of ALBFS that Ennis said the magic word:

*QUOTE*
Again, Ennis hitched forward, moving even closer to Jack. He held Jack’s right hand with his left, and used his right index finger to push up Jack’s chin. “Lookit me, bud.” Their eyes fixed together. “Jack, if you died, I couldn’t live. And if you killed yerself because of me, well then, I’d hafta kill myself, because I could never live with that weight on my shoulders.” He paused. “And I realized that if we’re gonna start killin’ ourselves and endin’ up dead, we might as well try livin’ together before we do, because what’s the point of being dead if we haven’t done the thing that was gonna get us killed in the first place?”

Jack looked puzzled. “Ennis, what the fuck are ya sayin’?”

“I’m sayin’ yes, Jack. I’m sayin’ yes to the question you’ve asked me ev’ry time we’ve been together for the last nine years. I’m sayin’ yes to some sweet life, yes to a cow and calf operation, yes to whatever other crazy fuckin’ idea ya might have.”

“Oh, Ennis,” Jack breathed, “don’t be cruel.”

“I ain’t being cruel, Jack, I’m tellin’ ya the truth. You said last night, ‘I want you, I want all of you, all of the time. I want you in my life. I want you to be my life.’ Jack, that’s what I want, too.”

“Oh, God, Ennis.” Jack felt himself starting to tremble.

Ennis took Jack’s face in both of his hands. “I love you, Jack. It’s that simple.”

At that point, Jack truly lost it. He fell forward into Ennis’s arms, his breath rasping and chest heaving, thirteen years of bottled up emotion exiting his body. Giant sobs escaped from his mouth and tears poured down his cheeks. Jack almost felt as if he was going to piss himself. “Oh God, Ennis, oh, God….”

Ennis pulled him close, stroking his hair, “It’s okay cowboy, I’m here and I ain’t ever goin’ away.” With his other hand he made rhythmic circles on Jack’s back, “It’s okay, lil darlin’, it’s okay babe, I love you.”

Jack thought he would die at the sound of the words coming out of Ennis’s mouth. Ennis, usually hard pressed to tell someone the time of day, was now reciting endearments and I-love-yous as if they were a mantra. “Oh, Ennis, I love you.” *QUOTE:

Brings me out in goosebumps every time, and now, here they are after more than 30 years, still together and very much in love. *SIGH*

Leslie,

I know I've already said it SO many times, but I just love your J & E sooooo much. :D

This chapter was just absolutely beautiful, hot, and perfect from start to finish. :)

Where do I begin? hehehe

I love this part...omfg...I love this part:

"Jack tried to remember the suppleness of his youth, when his body felt long and lean and languid. I draped, he thought, I draped myself against the side of the truck."

:D Big silly-ass grin on my face. Your wording is so perfect. I can so see it. But the funny thing is, I see both Jacks at the same time...the 19-year old right next to the 63-year old. (Kinda nudging him and saying, 'do it like this, Bud') lol So perfect. :)

And this:

"He was transported back through time and once again, Ennis was 19, standing outside Aguirre’s trailer in Signal, seeing Jack for the first time in his life. He remembered the pose, the posture, the jet black hair, the brilliant blue eyes peering out from under the brim of his hat. The hair wasn’t black anymore but everything else was picture perfect."

Your wording is what made it 'picture perfect.'

And I love Ennis' directness and honesty:

"Oh holy fuck, he thought, I can’t have a hard-on in front of all these people."

HEHEHE That was beautiful. In his 60's, gettin an instant hard-on, just lookin at his man. ;)

And finally, this part...cuz ya know know where my mind always is:

"And,” he added, after a pause, “I want ya ta fuck me in the front seat a this truck. I want ya ta drill me inta this nice smooth leather,” he said, running his hand along the seat, “but sometime when we have time…and mebbe a little lube.”

Gotta love our boys still wantin it all the time...just not quite as rough as that first time. ;) hehehe

Leslie, you are the queen. :)
Love ya, sweetie.

Through The Veil Of Time

Chapter 30. Judging Time

http://lazylfarm.livejournal.com/28847.html

Thirty chapters seems like a milestone, so I'll give a little synopsis. This story is a sequel to "A Love Born From Steel." It begins in May 2006 with Jack and Ennis, now 63, living on the Lazy L Farm in Quanah, TX. I started it in response to a prompt to "do something with Jack and Ennis in the present."

Lots of sharing about their love, their lives, and their happiness...thirty years on.

Enjoy!

Another chapter?   :)  You are smokin', Your Highness - and we love it!

Congratulations on Chapter 30 - and what a warm, wonderful chapter it is!

I really enjoyed seeing the funny, inquisitive side of KE.  The categories are great!  And I'm glad he's asking questions as well as observing - shows he's making a sincere effort to appreciate and understand!

Of course, you know me - this is my favorite part ...

“I am married. I am married in my heart and if ya think a marriage as a covenant between two people, well, we’re prob’ly the most married people here ...

and "covenant" is one of my favorite words!   :)

It's going to be hard for Ennis (and for me) to say good-bye to KE.

Thanks again!

Marie
Title: Re: Through the Veil of Time

Thanks, Marie!

I have been struggling with the judging...it seemed sort of boring to write, "And then Ennis stood up and gave X certficate to X..." As I pondered it, I realized the reason that Ennis asked KE to help him with the judging...and you just read the results.

Yes, a covenant, as in a solemn promise. Ennis believes himself to be married, and is married, and hates it when the government reminds him otherwise.

Thanks for being a loyal reader and commenter! I so appreciate it!

Leslie,

Like everyone else, I really loved the interaction between K.E. and Ennis. It just felt dead on perfect. I loved how Ennis used the word 'covenant,' and I also loved how he said that not being able to file jointly really pissed him off.

You always combine just the right amount of thoughtfulness with humor.

I also really loved this part:

"KE nodded, picking up another cup. “Yup, this one, this white chicken chili. I liked the way it looked ‘cause it was white. The chef is a good lookin’ gal, too.”

“Lureen?”

KE nodded and Ennis shook his head. “KE Del Mar, you are too fuckin’ much. Pretty chili and a pretty chili chef.”

“C’mon, you don’t think she’s good lookin’?”

“I s’pose, but I don’t think a Jack’s ex that way. I mostly think a her as a friend. Besides, she musta told ya she’s married.”

KE snorted. “’Course she did. C’mon, give me a break…I’m a dyin’ man goin’ home ta Wyoming in two days. I ain’t lookin’ ta get in her pants, Ennis, I’m just enjoyin’ the scenery.”

I just got such a kick out of that. lol

And this too:

“Well, I guess I got some questions, that’s all. I’m tryin’ ta understand.”

“And I guess it makes sense ta ask me the questions.”

“Well, I ain’t gonna ask that big biker guy!”

hehehe ~~~ Trying to picture 'big biker guy' explaining some of the more delicate facts to K.E.~~~ ;) lol

But this was my favorite:

“Ain’t just the truck, it’s all of it,” KE replied, raising his arm and waving it outward. “This party, yer friends, yer hospitality…” His voice dropped a notch and he gave Ennis an embarrassed smile. “You bein’ nice ta me…welcomin’ me back inta yer life.”

Ennis looked down at his hands, equally embarrassed. “Ah shit, KE…I’m beginnin’ ta think we drank too much beer and the sun is addlin’ our brains…but…thanks.”

Beautiful chapter, Leslie.  As always.  Thank you!

Yes, Leslie, your Jack has indeed been branded with a very special tatoo!

From Chapter 1:

Over time, the harsh memories of that night had faded and Jack could look back and remember it as a happy time. In fact, the tattoo that Jack sported on his upper right arm was a direct remembrance from that day: a stylized brand for the “Circle E Ranch,” which was something Ennis had said to him—“I’m brandin’ ya, cowboy”—during their 24 hours of non-stop lovemaking. (That would be May 17th, “Screw Yer Brains Out Day,” on Ennis’s calendar.)

The tattoo had come about because Jack had said, also during that same summer of 1976, that he wanted one with Ennis’s name. Ennis had thought he was joking but Jack had been completely serious. He pictured it as a lasso, writing Ennis’s name in script. He had even sketched a few designs. But when push came to shove, Ennis had asked him not to use his name. “It’s just too personal, Jack,” he said. “I know folks know we’re together but what if we were somewhere like…I dunno…a hotel with a pool or somewhere, with strangers…I’d be embarrassed.” The compromise had been the Circle E which, in the end, Jack was happier with. It was designed by Ennis’s daughter Jenny—their daughter, now, in both their minds—who was an artist living in Massachusetts. The design was striking and unusual and anyone who saw it commented on its beauty.

Jack absent-mindedly rubbed the spot where the tattoo was and Ennis noticed. “Circle E, I’m brandin’ ya, cowboy,” he said with smile, as they sat down at the dining room table.

I actually have no idea. I told someone the other day, the only real benchmark for me when I began writing this was the July 4th party. That's coming to a close, but I don't feel like the story is coming to a close. And KE has surprised me, becoming much more of a person than I expected. I think he has something up his sleeve, too. We'll see.

I left my comments for this one on FF.net--it was good, and I agree with you, I am feeling more in the story with KE, and there are a lot of directions that could go before it is done.  Very nice development of him in this story, I appreciate the emotional growth he is showing too, very well put together.

Leslie,

I just love your guys so much. ~~~ sigh

The interaction between them is so beautiful and rings so realistic. I loved this part:

He turned to Ennis for a more enthusiastic hug, then said in a loud stage whisper, easily heard by most of the guests, “Told ya so.”

“You sure did, but ya won fair and square, with the people votin’, no one can accuse ya of bribin’ the judges.”

“Sleepin’ with, more like,” said Jack, this in a very soft whisper directly in Ennis’s year, who, as he heard the words, blushed bright red to the roots of his hair.

I swear I can see them on stage having that conversation. lol

And this one too:

“Now don’t go butterin’ me up with hugs and kisses,” he said, “because I ain’t dancin’ with ya when the band arrives…”

“Ah, En…” Jack sighed.

“I could tell that’s what you were doin’.”

“Just one lil dance?”

I can so see Jack's face...almost pouting...asking for just 'one lil dance...' :)

Your J & E keep me smiling for days. Thank you!

Lazy L stories are still some of my favorites, they make me feel warm and fuzzy and I love your Jack and Ennis (along with their family). Thanks for the recent update of TTVOT. :-*

During a dry fic period recently I went back and re-read A Love born from Steel from the beginning and was impressed all over again. I enjoyed Ennis's TTVOT calender especially May 17th, “Screw Yer Brains Out Day” related to the events of that first summer together.

I was just thinking this morning that I'd love a TTVOT update - and here it is - and on my lunch hour, too!  :)

You've really outdone yourself, Leslie- and that's saying something.  I loved this:

“This was quite a day,” he said. “You happy?”

I love that that was Ennis's first thought - Jack's happiness!   And we know Ennis's happiness is always first in Jack's mind, too.

How wonderfully loving and generous of Jack to think of K.E. staying on - what a bittersweet reunion Ennis has had with him.

Hell...that wasn't safe for anywhere...I'll just sit here for a while, till things have calmed down.

I think Scott said that best.  Hawt Damn - love when those boys break out the toys!

Thank you!!!

“I walked into that tent and you were sittin’ there naked…you looked so young.”
“We were young…just two kids, forced ta grow up fast.”
Jack brushed his hand along Ennis’s jaw, letting it slide down onto his shoulder. “I had wanted ta blow ya for days, and I was too fuckin’ scared ta ask…and then, ya told me with yer eyes…”
“Our eyes did a lot of the talkin’ in the old days…”

Leslie!!! :)

Okay, either I'm totally crazy, or "your boys" just did a mini flashback to "my boys." hehehe So, if I am crazy, just ignore me and read on to the next comment from the next reader. lol But if I'm not crazy, let me tell what you just did! :)

For just a moment, reading your story, I got to have something I'll never be able to write. Just for a moment, I got to see my J & E older and together and happy, because it felt so right that the two stories were tied together. :) :) :) So you gave me something I'll never be able to write myself.
I got a glimpse of the happy ending. :)

That probably makes no sense at all. lol
But I feel like you just connected our two stories.

( ~~~ I wish I could do what you do ~~~~ I wish I could write an AU and give them what they deserve )

But you did it for me. Thank you! :)

Love ya, sweetie!

Hey C* it was a shout out to your story because I read it, and read it, and read it again...and that last part, that seventh day, I couldn't get it out of my head. And it was so perfect and so wonderful that I figured on this wonderful day, they'd remember that wonderful day...

I meant it as a compliment, sweetie...glad you took it that way!

Love ya back,

Hey Leslie,

That was a bittersweet but beautiful ending, with KE's obit in the end. However, it's good to know that he passed away after having made peace with is family, especially with Ennis. I think that's important. Thanks!

Leslie,

I'm almost at a loss for words...I don't want it to end.
You know me, I love your J & E.
I'm not ready for your story to be over.   ~~~  sigh ~~~
(I may have to go back to the beginning and re-read both stories.)    ;)

This was a beautiful final chapter to an amazing story.
You managed to have such fitting closure with so many people through your three letters.  I particularly liked how you had Alma warm up to Kelly, enough to cook with her and go shopping.   :)   I really liked how Jenny said, "Kelly just jumped in there and starting acting like a 'daughter-in-law.'    :)    Sometimes, that's what it takes...the new person jumpin' in and basically saying, 'okay, I'm family now...get used to me.'   lol   ;)

As always, I love all the banter between our guys.  They always sound so true to character, just older.  You've done such a great job with them...okay, did I mention, I'm not ready to let go of your story yet.   ;)

Loved it when Ennis was trying to ask Bobby about  'hanky panky' with Chrissy.  LOL  I can picture Ennis...at any age, trying to ask a question like that
and turning bright red.   ;)

And I really loved the part where they're talking about watches, going all the way back to the beginning, when Aguirre threw Ennis the watch, and Ennis put it in his pocket.   lol   That always struck me as so funny in the movie, when Ennis looked at it like it was a foreign object...like he had no idea what to do with it.  lol   ;)

And you know of course, I love Ennis'  'calendar.'   lol
"August 16th - 'Horny as hell day.'    hehehe

Everything was so beautiful and so right.

But my favorite line was one tiny little line at the end...in K.E.'s Obituary.
These seven words made the waterworks start...as it should be:

"...his brother Ennis and husband Jack Twist..."

Beautiful Leslie.  Simply beautiful.
Thank you so much for giving our boys a long life and a happy ending.   :)

Cristine    :)

OMG Leslie. Your announcement of "last chapter" really took me by surprise. The thought of  TTVOT actually ending never occured to me. This sounds maybe more naive than I meant it. I'm aware it has to end some time. But I didn't see it coming now. Hope this makes sense.

I liked the chapter, as always. And I truly liked the ending with the letters, their reminiscent thoughts and KE's obituary. But I didn't want the story to end.

I will miss your Lazy L guys so much.  :'(

At one point, I wanted this story to go on forever, but I remembered the song from "Sesame Street": Every story has a beginning, middle, and an end. It became very clear to me after finishing chapter 32 that the end was upon us.

It is interesting, because when I started this, I had in my mind that the story was going to be very much about Billy and Scott, and Jack and Ennis's place in their lives as role models. Then KE came on the scene and the whole story shifted. Writing fiction is something new to me, and is one of the gifts that BBM has given me. I have also learned I need to be patient and let the characters tell me the story. That's what happened in this case. KE turned out to be a very nice man who was very sad about all the years lost between him and his brother. He was very grateful for the chance to capture at least some of that. And once he did, the story came to an end.

Thanks for being a reader and for your ongoing support. It means a great deal to me!

Thank you, Cristine, and thanks for your comments, as always. You have a way of picking up on the things that are special to me, too.

KE wrote his own obituary. He did it with Marie, the hospice nurse, and was very insistent that Jack be referred to as Ennis's husband. It was also his wish that it be published in the Quanah Bulletin as well as the Casper Star-Tribune.

Just thought you might want to know.

Hugs,

Leslie

A Note to my Readers:

My plan for the next few weeks is to go through and do a careful edit of "Veil," and format the chapters for printing with cover art by my friend Lucise. I'll let folks know when that is done and make the files available to people who might want them.

As you know, I have been writing a daily drabble since January 31st and many of them are in the Lazy L universe. They are all here in the drabblefest. I also plan to start uploading those to my LJ so that they will be together in one place. That should make them a bit more organized for people who want to read them in a group.

March 14 I leave for Holland and will be seeing the stage play of BBM (in Dutch) on Saturday March 17th. I'll be connecting with a number of EuroBrokie friends while I am there, and doing some sightseeing in Germany. I hope to visit the American Cemetery in St. Avold, France, and see my husband's uncle's grave...he was killed in WWII. As far as I know, I am the only person from the family who will have ever visited his grave. It has been 63 years, I think it is time. I'll return to the US on March 22.

A new story is starting to form in my mind. It will still be in the Lazy L universe, but Jack and Ennis won't be the major characters. I'll give a hint to sharp eyed readers: you know the name of the major character, a new OC. His name is mentioned in "Veil." My plan is not to start writing until I come home from Europe, but I may surprise myself.

I'll keep you posted.

Leslie,

When I saw this thread had been updated today I was so excited anticipating a new chapter so soon!  I'll admit it - when I saw the words "now complete" I very seflishly thought "No - I don't want it to be over!"  But, of course, I understand that all stories have to end - even ones that I love so much.  :)

What an unbelievably beautiful final chapter!  Could not have been more perfect.  We have our boys being our boys - always so funny and loving and just so real with each other.  I could "listen" to them talk through you all day.

I loved when you had all the letters going back and forth between Ennis and the girls way back in ALBFS.  I've always loved reading a story through letters and K.E.'s letter to Ennis was really a masterpiece, Leslie.  And I choose that word very purposely.  Hospice, and hospice nurses especially, are very dear to my heart.  And when K.E. mentioned that "old guy and the rainbow stuff" and talked about his nurse (I liked her name, btw  :) ) oh, my . . . .   :'( :'(   Anything about Hal really gets to me, and for K.E. to be remembering him too, that was so, so touching.  How wonderful that K.E. was able to have such a positive, loving experience through his final months.  Thank you for making hospice a part of your stories.

I was happy to see that there is hope for Jenny and Alma.  Monthly phone calls are a great idea - and it certainly is promising that Alma bonded with Kelly and, of course, Evan.

Reading K.E.'s obit was so moving.  For K.E. to acknowledge, in writing, publicly, that Jack Twist was Ennis's husband - well, those may be my very favorite words throughout the entire story.

There are so many wonderful fics out there - but I don't think any of them have touched me as personally as ALBFS and TTVOT. These stories will always be very close to my heart.

Safe travels and have a wonderful time in Europe.  The stage play of BBM - can't wait to hear about that!  I look forward to your new story - I already know I'll love it!

Thanks, Leslie!

Hugs,
Marie

Thank you for a very beautiful final chapter of Through the Veil of Time.  A masterpiece.  It truly touched my heart. Tears filled my eyes with KE letter to Ennis then again while reading KE's obit.  He died in February, so that means Ennis and Jack got to see KE before he died and was givin the family watch when they visited for their the hunting trip in November.  Hopspice was very good my family as my dad died at home from cancer.   They are wonderful special people.   I have told you before you are an extremely talented writer.  I appreciate you bringing Jack and Ennis to life in your stories Thank you again.

thank you for taking us along with Ennis and Jack and everyone connected to the Lazy L --this has been a great read and fun journey.
I was very sentimental about the ending, and there was just enough tenderness, and just enough memory to be very glad I read all of this.

Loved Ken's letter, and esp about him finding out what hospice was and how it helped him, Ennis really did expand his horizons.
Loved jenny's writing about Kelly and Alma excellent way to bring those ends together too.
thanks again for sharing!  Really enjoyed the whole series.

Its four o clock in the morning, and i sit here trying to compose yet another
thing to tell you how wonderful i think your story has been.  You not only
gave us a pair of wonderful books, but you also gave us many many other
background items..It was not about characters in a book or story, but you gave them a complete and rounded life and activities.  All the work on the
house, the friends and relatives, but also the holiday activities,,,fourth of July
and don wroe day,,,horney day, and this is not to mention the anniversaries/
The beautiful parties, the truck and all the animals...  But one of the most
fun things was the chili cook off, along with all the recipes...Jack came by to
visit us in chat, and all the other extras that you pieced together to bring this
story to life.. I know it has been a tremendous undertaking, altho an act of
love as well...            Thank you so much for this lovely job, well done Janice

okay, i sat down and took a deep breath and started reading the final chapter.

And what can I say that hasn't already been sad? I really, really love you Jack and Ennis. I reread A Love Born From Steel on holiday last week and was once again very moved by the Hall story. You've written that so well, just as you have with KE in this story.

I'm so pleased that i'll be able to thank you in person for sharing your wonderful talent when you come to visit next month.  :-*  Of course, you'll have to put up with me doing silly fan things like asking you to authograph my copy of ALBFS  ;D I'll try not to scream okay?

Jack and Ennis at the Lazy L Farm: you know it should be like this, always...

I am always honored and flattered by "the silly fan things." Screaming is good too. I might scream!

I am glad you liked the story. I did too...I was very happy with it and the way things came together. KE turned out to be a much more important person than I originally expected.

Now, Fabienne, you didn't miss Chapter 32, did you? I think that got posted while you were on vacation, too. Little bit of anniversary night hanky-panky in that one....

Leslie,

I was so moved by the epilogue from "Steel", and "Veil" has been especially satisfying, bringing your boys up to date.

We're left to imagine the hunting trip and last meeting with KE, and further talk of the watch. (And to imagine talk of its succession: Junior? Jenny? eventually Evan?) The watch is a wonderful symbol here. Time, family, continuance, remembrance.

Thank you, Leslie, for giving Jack and Ennis a long and fulfilling life.

Your writing has been a lovely antidote to "Brokeback Fever".

Love,
Paul

Oh yes, I love that movie.   :)   Jake's  FIRST cowboy movie.   lol
Jake was the cutest little 10-year-old on the planet back then.   ;)
(And now, he's the cutest 26-year-old on the planet)   hehehe

A few months after I saw BBM for the first time, I bought a copy of "City Slickers" and enjoyed it again, hadn't watched it in years.  So then, for fun, the next time a conversation came up about Jake's movies, I slyly said,  "Oh, yeah...liked that 'cowboy one.'   I paused...and then said "City Slickers."    Everybody looked at me like  'WTF.'   LOL     I think most of the people in that room had forgotten that Jake was in that movie.   Or maybe, they never even knew.  But I've sort of been following the work of the entire Gyllenhaal clan since the late 80's.    ;)

I hope you never change your avatar.   ;)

Everyone, or anyone who is interested...

I have finished my final edit of Through The Veil of Time. It is all formatted with page numbers, running heads, and a table of contents. I also have a cover, with art by my friend Lucise. The files are in Word and the cover is a jpeg. You could print it yourself or take it to a copy store and have it printed and bound.

If there are readers out there who would like the files, please send me a PM with your email address and I'll send them right off to you.

A few people have asked already and yes, I did the same thing for A Love Born From Steel, so you want those files, too, just ask.

Enjoy!

Interesting little side note, I received this email from a reader:

I live in a Dallas suburb and drove south on I-45.  I drove out on some country roads and state hiways around Ennis and saw some beautiful fields of bluebonnets.   Leaving Ennis southbound on I-45 there,as big as life, is a sign saying next exit is Alma.  Then I left I-45 at Corsicana on SR 31 toward Waco.  About 10 miles out of Corsicana is the Lazy L Ranch.  I almost ran off the road turning to look at the sign.  Also Heath TX is located in Rockwall county just east of Dallas
.

Who knew?

I reread TTVOT lately. I had some quiet days, took my printed out copy that Leslie gave to me, and made it though the whole book in two days. That's how I had wanted to read it: in (more or less) one go. It was great delving into the world of Quannah again. It was a different (and for me even more enjoyable) reading experience than always having to wait for the next chapter. I enjoyed Leslie's older, wiser and mature boys so much, especially her Ennis (no wonder, I've always been an Ennis girl  ). This is truly how I wish it would have been, and for the greatest part how I think it could have been.
Thank you Leslie, once again, for giving us this story.

What can I say Chrissi? Great minds think alike, hunh?  :) I've been rereading TTVOT (the copy Leslie gave me) lately too. I've read it in small chunks, a few chapters at a time. It's great to be back at the Lazy L. Just this morning I read the 'Billy Jarret' chapter, where Billy says to Ennis 'I want to have a traditional life, I just want it with a man'. To me, that's one of the great lines in this story.

I love the banter between them (the cooking, the painting job, the piercing  ;D) and how confident they feel about their love for each other, and admitting it so freely. You're right Chrissi, this really is how it should have been...

thank you Leslie!  :-*

Hi RLH,

I am working on originalizing A Love Born From Steel and Through The Veil of Time...hopefully ALBFS will be published as an ebook very soon. While this is in process, I have locked the stories on my LJ.

thanks.  I envy those who were able to read it before.  Do you have a time period we can watch for?

I'm reading ALBFS - again-a chapter before bed every night. It settles me and puts me to sleep with the love of E&J on my mind.

I took my printed, bound copy to the beach yesterday and the friend I was with just laughed at me cuz it's a big-ass binder  ;D

Ah, thank you Roux. I am still working on getting the original version of ALBFS published. I still have edits and unfortunately, I forgot to bring the Word file with me to Switzerland (not that I would have had time to work on it anyway) so I won't be back to it til October. Sorry :-(

Hey Rouxb, Leslie's coming over this weekend, so if she wants to work on the story, she can use the file on my computer.

But, somehow.....I doubt she'll do any writing this weekend, you know how it goes, once we get to talking and drinking and all.  ;D  :)

Hahahah, thanks. What a true friend!

Actually the file I need is 3/4s finished which is why I don't want to go back to one of the ones I have on this computer and start all over.

Be patient...it will be worth the wait. Believe me :-)

Yay!  I finally finished TTVOT and it was wonderful!

Long story - short version:
I had drifted away from BbM fanfic for a while (quite a while) and moved on to other less volatile fandoms for my fic fix.
Then recently I was going through all "My Favorites" lists and began cleaning out and updating links.  Turned out, I had a lot of dead links for BbM.  A number of WIP's were abandoned/never finished and others were no longer accessible.  I had really lost track of all the stories I had been following, which was frustrating, but that's the way it goes.  Looks like fics are still being posted in this universe, so I began searching forums, threads, communities, etc.  I am rebuilding my 'to be read' lists.

Anyway, I managed to find TTVOT at fanfiction.net (Thank goodness!)  Took me a while to figure out where I had even left off.  Re-read the day of the chili cookoff chapters, found my way, and realized I was only a few chapters from the end.  What a bittersweet, yet emotionally satisfying ending, a fitting conclusion for this awesome tale.
I really enjoy your writing.
Hugs,
NV
